Your iPhone probably isn't calling home, just might not want you up in its Core Location {Engadget Mobile}
Aug 8th 2008 11:04AM I suspect access to the Core Location is based on the strange system Apple is using for the GPS.
There are 3 ways to locate yourself on iphone OS: cell tower triangulation, wifi, and GPS.
What makes it tricker is the GPS is A-GPS so it MAY be using some information from cell towers (time, location) to help the GPS chip.
The GPS chip is off 90% of the time to save battery life. So MOST of the time, you are using cell tower/wifi information to start off.
But the cell tower information comes from Google -- they bring their own database. And wifi comes from skyhook.
This may be the problem with Nav software as well -- data coming from CoreLocation contains Google information, and you can't filter it out to allow 3rd party nav apps. Yet.
It is a clever hack that saves battery life, but I can see why Google isn't easier to allow TomTom, Garmin, etc to share in that information to build nav apps.
Mark/Space ships Missing Sync for Symbian {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jul 29th 2008 3:41PM Why would you want this program? Symbian already has isync enabled for contacts/cal sync. You can already send documents over via BT/WIFI/USB. Music also has a sync tool. OK, pics don't get auto sync but again it is trivial to send them over, Call LOG/SMS?

Jun 23rd 2008 9:44PM wow. does anyone care anymore. A year late and a hundred dollars short....
Nokia E71 confirmed and oh-so-slim {Engadget Mobile}
Jun 16th 2008 9:02AM You've got to be kidding me.
$500, no carrier subsidy, and they expect to sell these things to North Americans? I've heard of the iphone, at at $199, at that is the death of North American nokia sales.
(and yes, I know, the extra $15 a month hurts. So does five bills out of the pocket. If you're price sensitive, take a quick guess on which hurts more)
Unsubsidized iPhone 3G priced at €499/€569 in Europe {Engadget Mobile}
Jun 12th 2008 7:32AM Yes, it is the same price as the comparables, but they are not selling it unlocked, and there is not a factory authorized unlocking solution (i.e. unlocking may brick it)
Very important for Europe, as you still have to worry about roaming charges.
Apple's lucrative iPhone revenue sharing goes away, replaced with "traditional" model {Engadget Mobile}
Jun 9th 2008 9:20PM This is rot.
AT&T will be coming out about the same. An extra $10 a month over 24 months is a $240 addition, which is probably the same as the subsidy being paid to Apple.
Apple benefits tremendously. They are able to sell the iphone 3G to AT&T at $450 or $500 before the subsidy kicks in. In reality the iphone should be going down in price -- no real change in hardware except a $10 3G radio and a $5 GPS chip. With the volume,. flash prices, and what not, Apple is going to make a bundle on the SALE of iphones.
And all this is being done to prevent unlocked phone sales. You can't go into an apple store and pick up 10 to ship overseas anymore.
Nokia's E-series to ship in Q3 alongside N96 {Engadget Mobile}
Jun 9th 2008 3:29PM and no, ladies and gentleman, watch the complete elimination of Nokia from the North American market.....
$199 for a freaking iphone....how can nokia compete on price (let alone features?) Unless they sell this at $99 they are not going to move a single phone in North America....and they are going to be hard pressed to sell one in Europe as well.
Nokia "definitely" preparing Linux-based phones, flavor unknown {Engadget Mobile}
May 20th 2008 5:06PM hmm....so they offering s40, s60, s60 touch, internet tablets, and now linux phones. Why does this remind me of Moto two years ago -- unable to build around a core technology.
I am so NOT an apple fan boy (user since 89 -- I've learned to hate them) but I do think Apple has the right game here. Build one platform form, perfect it, then attack the next segment (feature phone), perfect that, then attack another platform.
I like S60, but the interface is about two years out of date, and they are not working on fixing some core functions are brining firmware updates around. Fix that before you move into Linux phones.
Nokia E71 all up in AT&T's labs {Engadget Mobile}
May 9th 2008 9:55AM My bet: No WIFI on an AT&T version. Bat life on the E61 is not great; with a smaller form factor (and smaller battery) and 3G that is going to be real hard to run Wifi as well. Which is a real shame, as wifi is useful for both overseas and VOIP.
