Cinematical's Friday Night Double Feature: Underrated Music Movies {Cinematical}

Jul 21st 2008 10:33PM I've never been a big The Beatles fan (as far as I can tell, the article "The" is supposed to be part of their name and dropped about 90% of the time). I think I always looked at episodes of theirs, like their appearence on the Ed Sullivan show, and saw them as entirely overrated.

As a backdrop for the times, Across the Universe actually has me appreciating them more now. I think maybe this film is a bit like Nixon; if you were a fan and you already felt something for The Beatles, then you probably feel let down. If you have no expectations, as I had, the film is remarkably charming in many ways.

Electric bandages: not your favorite new prog-rock band {Engadget}

Jul 1st 2008 9:08PM That was my exact thought too. Ok, so there is a voltage potential between the big circle and the little circle. I'm assuming this is just because there are two different metals. Is it the electrons passing through the water (simulated wound I assume), that is supposed to be responsible for its antibiotical properties? Everyone be careful when and where we use this technology otherwise we'll just breed electrically resistive superbugs... Hmmm, I just got a great idea for a novel.

HIS iClear claims to reduce noise, really just fills an empty PCIe slot {Engadget}

Jun 26th 2008 3:37PM I'm in agreement with some of the others. Some sort of signal filter to clean up noise on the bus and secondly it acts like a partial faraday cage to absorb some stray EMI. (Almost) all cards have similar filters on them, but probably not as well tuned. Digital signals ring when transitioning between high and low levels. Something like this could work to reduce that ringing, but I would expect the added capacitance to slow down the transition. You'd get a cleaner signal but lower bandwidth. Not sure what to think right now.

Ubuntu's Hardy Heron released for MIDs {Engadget}

Jun 25th 2008 7:40PM Is something new? I tried to install this on my Samsung Q1P the other day and couldn't get it to boot. The process is fairly involved, and as was pointed out, this isn't ready for general use yet.

Are We Ever Going to See That 'American McGee's Alice' Movie? {Cinematical}

Jun 25th 2008 5:29PM Bah, the new site layout continues to foil me...

I'd also like to point out that "American McGee's Alice" is not the same as "Alice in Wonderland." Yes, it features a young (brown-haired by the book) girl named Alice, but the similarity ends there in most ways. AMA is more or less an inner journey. Alice in this version goes insane and she is wrestling inner demons. AiW is more about a day dream and it is full of fantastic life. If Burton tackles this, it will be like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; colourful and fantastic, but not dark like Edward Sissorhands or Nightmare Before Christmas. AMA would be dark and would stand alone.

Are We Ever Going to See That 'American McGee's Alice' Movie? {Cinematical}

Jun 25th 2008 5:20PM I'm actually very disappointed by this. The premiss of the story is so dark I would love to see it expanded upon. I also have a soft place for Sarah (that may not be the best way to phrase it), so I would like to see her attached to a role that has her playing a strong female character.

EFiX wants to bring OSX86 to the masses {Engadget}

Jun 13th 2008 9:00PM Kevin C. Tofel of jkOnTheRun put OS X on a Q1: http://www.jkontherun.com/2008/04/final-thoughts.html They also recently posted this blog posting of OS X on an OQO: http://www.jkontherun.com/2008/05/oqo-hacked-to-t.html

I'd say it's possible alright. Is it worth it? That's still not clear.

The CellularRecombomat: a cellular automata video synth that plays itself {Engadget}

Jun 9th 2008 9:04PM @Minilap: obviously you don't understand if you believe it is playing random notes. It is playing notes based on the rules defined by the cellular automata. It uses the "antenna" as feedback, and therefore it is probably not humanly possible to repeat the same performance, but it is by no means random. It's not all that different from an idea I had kicking around, but this certainly goes a step or two beyond what I had imagined putting together.

Antiquated hardware used to masterfully remix Radiohead's Nude {Engadget}

Jun 9th 2008 4:42PM @shane, I can confirm that it's called a voice coil. I always found it amusing; even more so when I first saw this (ab)usage.

Antiquated hardware used to masterfully remix Radiohead's Nude {Engadget}

Jun 9th 2008 4:37PM I think my favorite trick of yore was the Commodore 64's 1541 floppy drive. You can make it "sing" as demonstrated in this video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=5gnMgmlKi_o

I remember in the early 90's going over to a friend's house who would do this with his C64.
