iPhone 3G first look, what do you want to know? {Engadget}

Jul 10th 2008 2:32PM How's the battery life compared to the first iPhone? I know that Mossberg and the other reviews slightly covered this, but I'd like a bit more in-depth response if at all possible.

Ivyskin's Xylo T2 case engulfs your iPhone, doesn't inhibit touchscreen use {Engadget Mobile}

Apr 10th 2008 5:11PM Looks like a nice case, but the site's down. I found a guest review on IpodObserver.com and he has some less than positive observations of it:

I received mine today. It does work okay, although not as smooth a glide as the screen itself but:

-It feels cheap and looks a little bulky in comparison to the incase slider

-Air bubbles between the phone and front of case appear when you touch the screen

-Unsure of possible friction damage would appear as per the slider, but its not a tight fit

I wouldn't recommend this because of the air bubbles and the search for the perfect iPhone case continues...

Sprint licenses Visual Voicemail for the Samsung Instinct {Engadget Mobile}

Apr 6th 2008 9:16PM @helix:

Everything I've been reading about the X1 has said that it's going to be released with WinMo 6.1, as it'll be out in a few months, tops. WinMo7 is still being developed and, according to the internets, won't be released until 2009.

According to CNET, with regards to a WinMo 6.1 release, they say the following:

"Windows Mobile 6.1 will be available sometime in Q2, and a number of manufacturers (HTC, Samsung Electronics, Motorola, Pantech) and carriers (AT&T, Sprint, Alltel) have already announced that they will offer the upgrade. A sample of supported smartphones include the Samsung BlackJack II, AT&T Tilt, Sprint Motorola Q9c, Sprint Mogul, and Alltel Touch. For the full rundown of devices and features, check out the Microsoft Windows Mobile Web site."

Sprint licenses Visual Voicemail for the Samsung Instinct {Engadget Mobile}

Apr 6th 2008 7:27PM I have to agree with Chris. I still have the a900 myself and it's been a great phone. Matter of fact, this month I've had it for 2 years and it's still going strong.

I am looking to upgrade phones this September when our contract is up. It's currently between 3 phones: The 3G iPhone, the Samsung Instinct and the Sony Ericsson EXPERIA X1.

My only hesitation with the X1 is it's using WinMo 6.1 and every single friend that I know that has a WinMo phone absolutely despises WinMo. Not just hates it, or dislikes it... despises it. That's not exactly a vote of confidence to switch to a WinMo phone.

Video: Hands-on Sony's NWZ-A829 Walkman with Bluetooth {Engadget}

Apr 1st 2008 9:59AM I'm a bit confused at the video portion of your review. Are you saying that even if you threw a 320x240 M4V video file onto it, it wouldn't play? You absolutely HAVE to use their Media Manager software?

How was the Windows Media Player functionality for syncing? I use playlists almost exclusively, so I'd be using WMP for that; not just drag and drop through Windows.

Since you dog the Bluetooth integration, are you suggesting we save the $20 and get the A729 instead of the A829? The only difference in the 2 models is BT integration and since I'm going to use standard headphones anyway, is that a good idea?

Is there anything you DID like about the player? I don't care about the included headphones - I've got a better pair that I bought awhile back.

BlackBerry 9000 in the wild {Engadget Mobile}

Mar 28th 2008 10:44AM Thanks for your reply Anonymoose... much appreciated.

Through AT&T, you have to get a $20+ data plan for either the BB or the iPhone, so regardless of which phone I get, I'll have a data plan chained to it. I'm fine with that. I currently have internet through my Sprint phone and I already pay around $15 for it, so that's not a big deal. I want internet on my phone and I'm willing to pay for it.

I did hear about the whole warranty thing through Apple and while that sucks really bad, I'll just buy a damned tank case and baby the hell out of it, though that does add another "worry" to my list. Being without my phone for a week is unacceptable.

So even though the typing sucks on the iPhone, you still suggest an iPhone? I text and e-mail a fair share on my phone, so I was thinking that the BB keyboard would own the iPhone in this regard.

It's funny... I think that I want a combination of the BB keyboard and the UI of the iPhone. Some would say that's the Voyager, but I'm not switching to Verizon. :P

BlackBerry 9000 in the wild {Engadget Mobile}

Mar 28th 2008 10:09AM I, for one, am torn between a Blackberry and an iPhone. I'm upgrading in September and I'm trying to pick which one I should go with.

The Blackberry has push mail for not only the corporate world, but also for Yahoo Mail, Gmail, AOL mail and "other", just like the iPhone.

On top of that, I'm pretty sure I want a QWERTY keyboard... not a virtual keyboard.

Then there's the cost. I don't have $400+ for an iPhone, but I sure can afford about $250 for a Blackberry. I'd even go up to $299 if the Blackberry 9000 was really just THAT much better than a Curve, though if it has 3G, I'm pretty much already sold. If the iPhone comes out with a 3G version this year like all the rumors are pointing to, then it's going to be a tough decision.

The iPhone also looks like it'd be destroyed if I dropped it - and I'd be afraid to drop my $400 phone - not so much with the Blackberry. They've been making them for years and the build quality is pretty good (according to my co-workers that have them).

Also, there are a TON of apps for the Blackberry... going to crackberry.com or just searching for "Blackberry applications" will net hits to scores of websites with software you can use. The biggest 3rd party software out right now is the HTML e-mail viewer software.

Of course, it's still all opinion. I'm sure that either phone would work just fine for my needs, but I still want the "best" one.

Onda's VX767 PMP is a nice slice of sexy {Engadget}

Mar 25th 2008 11:46AM Here's all the bullet pointed features, as listed at the end of the second page:

● 4.3-inch, 480 × 272 dot-matrix TFT widescreen display true color;
● support TV output, TV / synchronous machines;
● supports MP3, WMA, WAV and other audio formats; support APE / FLAC lossless compression music;
● support synchronous lyrics display;
● support RM / RMVB, ASF, AVI, MP4, 3GP, MPG formats such as video players;
● rich support of the game;
● support FLASH animation player;
● support JPG, BMP, GIF, PNG formats picture here, rotate and slide show;
● FM radio can store more than 40 radio stations;

● energy-saving settings, font color, display brightness, and freedom of the interface background settings;
● 8 EQ sound, for the cycle of choice;

● support WIN98SE/ME, WIN2000, XP system;
● USB2.0 high-speed transmission interface;

Not a bad little player! Too bad we probably won't ever see it state-side.

I'm a little concerned that you didn't think the audio codecs were that impressive. The thing supports FLAC! Granted, it doesn't support other free codecs, like AAC or OGG, but still... at least it's got FLAC. That's something! It does list "and other formats", so who knows what the final product will support.

Nintendo wants your money for online "Pay & Play" gaming? {Engadget}

Feb 26th 2008 4:25PM I went and read the article and here's the tasty bit:

"The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection "Pay&Play" content will include games that are not free to play online. The icon is the same, but orange and surrounded with a rectangle with a "Pay&Play" label. This content would use Wii Points and would include both WiiWare and disc games. No specifics (of course!) but Guitar Hero III DLC seems like a possibility."

So, basically, you're paying for DLC, either in the form of new songs for Rock Band / GH3 or possibly for WiiWare or disc games. I don't really see how it's any different than buying current VC titles. If you get a game that has DLC, you pay for it, or when in the WiiWare, you'll see a full game that you can "Pay" and "Play".

There's no mention of a monthly service or MMO anywhere in the article.
