Author Nick Hornby not feeling the fever pitch over e-books {Engadget}

Jul 6th 2008 4:48PM because the production costs are very similar. Aside from print costs, both digital and paper books have author advances/royalties, proofreading, editing, layout, design, marketing, retailing and distribution costs (digital having its own set of costs comparable to paper). That leaves very little margin to share with the consumer.
Just because it is distributed digitally does not make a book suddenly cheaper to produce.

Jun 30th 2008 2:37PM I'd love to pick one up, at a lower price, for my kids who can do what they do (chat, video, music, surf) without having to worry about them spending large on mobile telephone fees. Aside from the price, I fear it is very limited by needing accessible wifi hotspots which are actually getting harder to find. Home and school are okay, but obviously not in the park.

Topia shows off 330-pound HUVO electric car {Engadget}

Jun 30th 2008 5:08AM @germs, rather than 'benefiting' from extensive roadways, they are a fundamental weaknesses for the USA: witness the current high costs of commuting and the lack of public transport. Rail was the pioneering replacement for the horse and buggy, not the road. Yet why is rail freight not more competitive? The automakers have a lot to answer for.
Yes, Europe did develop roadways earlier (it is older than the USA), but what defines streets in most locations is population density. With more people in towns, older, narrower streets and fewer carparks, smaller cars are a popular choice in inner cities. This also allows for fantastic networks of public transport.
