Opera Mini finds its way onto Android {Engadget Mobile}

Apr 13th 2008 4:19PM The J2ME to Android Java wrapper is probably pretty thin, and I doubt it makes much difference in performance. Also, how is this not a "native" app? Android's API is Java, so a "native" app would be running on the same JVM as this, just using different APIs.

Screen Grabs: Dahlia Malloy can't decide how to hold her iPhone {Engadget}

Apr 10th 2008 3:33AM I swear 75% of the time I pull mine out of my pocket it is upside down. It's really hard to tell until you start feeling around the edges for what buttons are where. I would actually be really excited if they made it less vertically symmetrical for the next rev :)

Hauppauge HD-PVR shows itself, pre-order said to be coming soon {Engadget}

Apr 4th 2008 2:52PM With HDMI, you'd have to deal with encryption, so it severely limits your options for home-brew PVR stuff. This is a useful step for getting your cable HD channels onto a MythTV box or similar, and most people can't tell the diff between component and HDMI anyway.

TiVo users getting YouTubed {Engadget}

Mar 12th 2008 1:41PM Yes yes, and h264 can't possibly be decoded in software!

Sun working on Java for the iPhone {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Mar 9th 2008 5:09PM I think you are confused...it sounds like you are talking about Java applets, which are a tiny subset of what Java is actually being used for in the real world. It is very popular as a server side platform (J2EE), and is also quite prolific as a mobile application platform (J2ME).

Did you apply for your TV converter box coupons yet? {Engadget}

Jan 1st 2008 8:38PM Despite how well-off any of us may be, we are paying taxes to subsidize this, so we may as well reap the benefits of the money we are paying to the government. The program is of arguable merit in the first place, considering the ability to watch TV is far from a necessity of survival.

Shocker: people loathe cellphone carriers {Engadget Mobile}

Dec 8th 2007 7:29PM True, they are not a necessity. Nor is water service. People survived a long time without running water. The point is, cell phones are very convenient, most people have one, and they are overpriced. I think the carriers are exploiting their position in the market to charge too much and treat customers like crap. In a normal competitive market, this would fix itself, but starting a cellular network is a huge barrier to entry, so it seems to continue on.

We've got iPhones, what do you want to know? {Engadget}

Jun 29th 2007 11:55PM It does have a SIM in it, check out the earlier link to the guys that took it apart. Now, someone brave should try a different SIM :)

The second Xbox 360 revealed: codename Zephyr {Engadget}

Jan 5th 2007 12:33PM It looks like it has a bunch of certification logos on it (FCC, etc). It could be a release version, but if it were a prototype it wouldn't be FCC certified right? Maybe it's photoshopped.

A moment of clarity for LG's VX9900 {Engadget Mobile}

Oct 6th 2006 2:46PM The V is so awful. Why does anyone care about it?
