1. techinically, upscaling makes image quality no better. when it does, it's only because of the poor video processing on the television, which is then bypassed by feeding it an image it can handle natively.
2. no matter how good the upscaling of the image is, the wii will still be dealing with 480p optimized textures. so it will still look incredibly inferior compared to native high-definition images on a HDTV. saying upscaling the wii to 720 will make it look just as native 720p is like saying hd-dvd's and blu ray disk's are unnecessary because dvd's can be upscaled to 1080p
