I mean, yes, Honda gets by with Honda and Acura. But Honda isn't Ford or GM... When Oldsmobile was killed, people didn't say "Oh, well, I can get the same sort of car from Buick or Cadillac or Chevrolet", even if those cars were on the same platform. They said "Oh, well, I'll just go buy another car from someone else", and left GM in droves. Pontiac and Saturn buyers will almost certainly do the same. Is there any reason to think the people buying Mercury won't also?
The Japanese have been adding brands since they came to the US, not subtracting them.

Nov 9th 2009 7:51PM I'm not sure I like this dealer convergence, either Ford-Lincoln-Mercury or Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge. I mean, isn't part of the luxury experience supposed to be the dealer service? But if you're getting the same dealer experience as the guy buying the Ford, that's another argument to just buy the Ford yourself. One occasionally sees Chevrolet-Cadillac, and I'm not a fan of that either.
Also, I like Mercury. No, I don't really know why either...
