Apple bucks recession, records best non-holiday quarter in company history {Engadget}

Jul 21st 2009 8:35PM I'll never understand why people overlook the fact that iPod owners, when their iPod breaks, will most likely purchase another iPod over any competitor, simply because their songs, as purchased from iTunes (disregarding the recent DRM-free offerings, which most people don't own), will only work with another iPod without jumping through hoops (burning and re-ripping, which the average Joe doesn't know how to do, sadly).

Sure, Apple is moving a very impressive number of units, but I wonder how many are from repeat buyers simply looking to replace their iPods every couple of years. It could very well be that Apple continually sells so many iPods because the quality is so poor that people are required to replace them every couple of years or so. Honestly, once you've invested quite a bit of money into songs, what are you going to do? Eat that investment? Your hands are essentially tied; you're buying another iPod.

NC State gurus build remote control bats, freak out Dukies and Tar Holes {Engadget}

Jul 7th 2009 8:02PM @ Brad Green: I'd have to agree that there are far too many New Yorkers/Jersey guidos at Duke, but they really only comprise about 15% of the student population (though they're so obnoxious that I guess it does seem like a lot more than that).

At the same time, UNCCH only takes about that many (15%) from out of state - not exactly picking from the cream of the academic crop, if you ask me. But hey, basketball championships make your degree more valuable, right? :)

Zune HD website exists, may mean nothing at all (update: means nothing at all) {Engadget}

Apr 13th 2009 6:33AM "Unfortunately, since the site appears to be registered via a proxy, there's really no way of telling if its legit or just someone with money to burn."

This is a company through which others can register domain names with anonymity, so regardless of where the owner is located, the registration will be under the PROXY, which, in this case is "Domains by Proxy, inc." Not sure how you got confused on this one...

Verizon drops Omnia to $199, hopes you'll pay attention now {Engadget Mobile}

Dec 1st 2008 11:52AM Waiting for the T*Omnia to come to Verizon? Good luck with that one.

I actually purchased the Omnia in store on Friday night for $199 AR, and I love the thing so far. I'm a touchscreen n00b but I have absolutely no problems with typing; I was really pretty surprised at how great the keyboard was. Of course, I had to disable the auto-rotate (now I have it mapped to a hard button) because it seemed to have a mind of its own, and TouchWiz just really, really sucks. I already can't wait until WinMo 6.5 (meaning I'm already sick of the WM interface), but I actually preferred this one to the Touch Pro. I can't believe Verizon has to sell this thing at this pricepoint, but hey, it worked out for me.
