Aug 21st 2009 11:41AM You totally missed this one:
http://www.touchuserguide.com/apple/tablet/2009/08/19/leaked-shot-of-apples-website-showing-macbook-touch/
which almost, sort of validates the one from Nowhereelse.fr. The main problem being the supposed Apple mess up shows one with a metal trim (like the iPhone), while the one on nowhereelse.fr is all black. Of course, there's rumors about prototypes. touchuserguide.com also has supposed leaks of "cocktail" (http://www.touchuserguide.com/apple/tablet/2009/08/20/first-shots-of-cocktail-style-os) and a new dock (http://www.touchuserguide.com/apple/tablet/2009/08/20/new-style-dock-on-the-apple-macbook-touch-tablet). What's interesting is that they seem to show a stock OS X background, yet support app stores apps. It would be quite interesting if the pic on nowhereelse.fr is a prototype of what Apple accidentally posted to their website. Of course, any schmo can set up a local web server and a local hosts file to make www.apple.com resolve to their own system to grab the supposed pictures that touchuserguide.com have... only time will tell
Microsoft Mac Business Unit announces details of next version of Office for Mac {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Aug 14th 2009 11:32AM Am I the only person that sees the ironic timing in this? MS has never given us even the hope of Outlook for the Mac until Apple decided to take all of Outlook’s functionality and build it into Snow Leopard. So not only do we all get to upgrade for $29 while XP and Vista users have to pay $100+, but now those of us that are forced to use an Exchange client no longer have to pony up for MS Office for the Mac. So MS seems themselves losing money on two fronts and their response is to finally cave and give us Outlook for the Mac. If Apple hadn’t licensed the support into iCal, AddressBook, and Mail, I doubt MS would’ve ever even thought of giving us Outlook for the Mac. I won’t be using Outlook for the Mac, but not cause I switched to Gmail, but because I’ll use the tools built-in to Snow Leopard to do it.
And some more irony… I have literally hundreds of apps on my Mac. Not one of them ever crashes… except for one. Care to take a guess? Entourage. I moved from the PC to the Mac to get the stability of a UNIX core with a usable GUI. I’ve had that stability and its been awesome. Then I went to work for a company with an Exchange server and was forced to use Entourage. I’d say that Entourage crashes or refuses to shut down cleanly at least twice a week. This is the ONLY app on my MBP that has this issue. Leave it to the maker of the most unstable OS known to man to make the only app that crashes or hangs my Mac. Thank you Microsoft! Now where’s my Snow Leopard?

Aug 12th 2009 2:58PM Also, I use BootCamp for Windows XP, though I never actually boot into it natively... I only open it with VMWare Fusion. The new MBP is going to have one partition for OS X. Is there a simple way of also migrating my WinXP partition over? Or do I need to back it up, re-partition and re-install XP, then restore it? Can TimeMachine backup my FAT32 XP volume?

Aug 12th 2009 2:46PM I'm curious about Migration Assistant. I switched from a PC to a Mac two years ago, so I haven't used it yet. At present, I have a Core2Duo 15'' MBP (late 2007). I just ordered a new Unibody 15'' that will be here next week. My current MBP is pretty customized and has lots of s/w installed. It also has 10.5.8 with all the latest updates (same thing my new MBP will have). If I use Migration Assistant, will it get everything over? applications? preferences? documents? music? Or, if I also have a copy of SuperDuper! am I better off using that to make a final image of my existing MBP and restoring it to the new one?
Additionally, my current MBP had a stock 10.5.0 install including the extra languages and print drivers, etc. I had run monolingual on it, but that broke Office updates and I had to completely re-install Office to be able to update it. I understand that I can do a customized install and skip the foreign language options, extra print drivers, etc. However, if I use SuperDuper! to restore from old to new, these will get put back. So with a brand new MBP, am I better off removing the default install, doing a new custom install (skipping the extra languages and print drivers), then using Migration Assistant to get everything over?
Verizon MiFi 2200 review {Engadget Mobile}
May 13th 2009 12:52PM So here's how to make this wanted by everyone...
1) make it just a bit thinner... easier fit into a wallet
2) drop the 802.11b legacy support and just go 802.11g/n
3) make it so it can charge wirelessly... like the Pre's touchstone or my old toothbrush
Now you have an always on device that never needs to leave your wallet and you can just drop your wallet onto your charger next to your keys while you sleep at night so its always ready for use.
Conceivably, they might have a hard time doing this now, but if they drop the USB charging ports, it could be doable. Give it 3 to 5 years and everyone will have their own little wireless bubble bridging off of Verizon or AT&T.
Oh yeah, and most cellphones consume less power when on WiFi than on 3G. So now, instead of your phone needing to switch from 3G to Wifi and such, it just always connects via WiFi and the router handles the hand-off. And thus, your cellphone's battery life improves. So long as the MiFi could be active for +24Hours you'd be set...

FireWire feedback from readers and Apple {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Oct 17th 2008 11:30AM Actually, yes I did and they do work. The firewire devices show up as USB devices in the Mac. Granted, not the best for firewire audio and such, but at least a somewhat workable solution.

Oct 17th 2008 10:52AM I have an IOGear 7-port USB 2.0 / FireWire hub on my desk. Basically, it has 4 USB 2.0 ports and connects to my MBP via USB (typical A to B connector), then also provides 3 firewire ports (there's one USB and one firewire on the front, the rest on the back). Granted, its all throttled to USB2.0 speeds, but its a solution to getting firewire to a USB only laptop.
