Verizon MiFi 2200 review {Engadget Mobile}

May 13th 2009 12:52PM So here's how to make this wanted by everyone...

1) make it just a bit thinner... easier fit into a wallet
2) drop the 802.11b legacy support and just go 802.11g/n
3) make it so it can charge wirelessly... like the Pre's touchstone or my old toothbrush

Now you have an always on device that never needs to leave your wallet and you can just drop your wallet onto your charger next to your keys while you sleep at night so its always ready for use.

Conceivably, they might have a hard time doing this now, but if they drop the USB charging ports, it could be doable. Give it 3 to 5 years and everyone will have their own little wireless bubble bridging off of Verizon or AT&T.

Oh yeah, and most cellphones consume less power when on WiFi than on 3G. So now, instead of your phone needing to switch from 3G to Wifi and such, it just always connects via WiFi and the router handles the hand-off. And thus, your cellphone's battery life improves. So long as the MiFi could be active for +24Hours you'd be set...

FireWire feedback from readers and Apple {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 17th 2008 11:30AM Actually, yes I did and they do work. The firewire devices show up as USB devices in the Mac. Granted, not the best for firewire audio and such, but at least a somewhat workable solution.

FireWire feedback from readers and Apple {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 17th 2008 10:52AM I have an IOGear 7-port USB 2.0 / FireWire hub on my desk. Basically, it has 4 USB 2.0 ports and connects to my MBP via USB (typical A to B connector), then also provides 3 firewire ports (there's one USB and one firewire on the front, the rest on the back). Granted, its all throttled to USB2.0 speeds, but its a solution to getting firewire to a USB only laptop.

RipIt yanks your DVDs right off the disc {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 16th 2008 10:18AM So let's of comments about other apps, but what about those that have actually used RipIt? I just downloaded the trial, though I'm at work w/o a DVD movie to test it. 30 minutes for a DVD movie seems pretty adequate, but what the spec's/quality of the resulting movie? Is it single pass or dual pass? How 'bout the audio? What's the final size of the ripped movie? Most tools will make the movie just slightly smaller than 700Mb for transportation on a CD. Most default to single pass on the video and fail to use lossless on the audio. But most alternatives also allow you to tweak these settings... at the expense of time and disk space, but at the benefit of a higher quality rip. Most will also let you change aspect ratio's. RipIt seems to have no options along these lines, leaving you to wonder what its output results will be. And what codec does it use? Is it xvid, divx, or some Quicktime happy format?

Ask Engadget: What are the best sounding headphones with in-line mic? {Engadget}

Sep 19th 2008 9:35AM I've tried 'em all... from Shure to Seinnheiser to Bose and about 10 others in between. I've settled on the Bose in-ears and the Shure adaptor both for the button/mic support and the extra cable length.

1Password for iPhone announced {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jul 21st 2008 1:55PM While I like 1Password, I've been quite happy with SplashData's SplashID which has had a client in the app store since day 1. Plus, its a bit more portable. I used the client version on a PC connecting to a Treo, then later on a Mac to the same Treo, and now from the Mac to an iPhone. The s/w's sync cleanly and work very well across multiple OS's/devices.
