Unlocked iPhone 3G available for direct shipment from Hong Kong, no catch at all {Engadget Mobile}

Jul 17th 2008 10:02PM The author of this article has opted for a poor choice of words here.

Just how does "the weird and wacky copyright laws of Hong Kong" have anything to do with the iPhone 3G being available network-lock-free?

For those people who may be unaware of this, the iPhone 3G models being sold in Hong Kong are *not* locked out-of-the-box, or even after iTunes activation. This is a policy of the Hong Kong operator, Hutchison (aka 3 Hong Kong), who is exclusively selling the handset in the local market.

Therefore, to say this has anything to do with the local "laws" of Hong Kong is simply misleading, which are far from being "weird and wacky". I take great offence at such a statement, whatever tone or manner it may have been presented in - and I believe I speak for many people when I say this.
