T-Mobile to announce 3G plans soon? {Engadget Mobile}

Oct 4th 2006 1:23PM 'Now of course, if you're sitting up and saying: "But wait a sec, UMTS already operates worldwide at 1900MHz," then you'd be right.'E

Except, of course, that you'd really be wrong, not right.

UMTS is 2100MHz worldwide, except for the US. The US is the only place where 1900MHz is used for UMTS. If T-Mobile were to use 2100MHz here in the States, it would mean that UMTS devices meant for Europe would work here. Since there are already a ton of those, that's very good news, not bad news. The only down side is that Cingular UMTS devices wouldn't work on T-Mobile's network.

The be-all, end-all battery life shootout {Engadget Mobile}

Aug 14th 2006 7:57AM This test methodology is flawed. I used to use a music track for testing battery talk times as well, until I realize that many modern handsets use some sort of noise reduction system that filters out music and keeps it from being transmitted - saving battery power.

In order to bypass this, you need to play a track of somebody actually talking - which is what we do now.

The change generally has one of two effects. Battery life is either reduced by a third or so, for those using noise-reduction, or it stays the same, for handsets that don't support any sort of noise reduction.

But with that said, the SE handsets still seem to be the best performers by far.

Motorola Capri, a.k.a. the RAZR slider, previewed {Engadget}

Jun 23rd 2006 2:49PM No, it isn't called the Z1 in China. That phone has nothing to do with the Capri.

I had a Capri for a few days. The UI was still quite slow and all, but it was a prototype. That's to be expected.

Anyway, some nicer photos can be found here:
