Carl Zeiss surprises with lenses for Canon's EOS EF mount {Engadget}

Sep 15th 2008 12:32PM I think you're all barking up the wrong tree. These lenses are made for filmmakers who use adapters which allow Canon (and Nikon) lenses to mount on their HD video cameras i.e. Red Rock Micro, P+S Technik and Letus. With these adapters you WANT manual focus and manual control over aperture. People are scouring Ebay for the older Nikon and Canon lenses for just this reason. So now Zeiss makes new lenses so we don't have to buy all the old lenses. Oh, and they'll work on the DSLR's, too.

Aug 20th 2008 3:40PM I burned and printed my director's reel. I guess people in Hollywood still actually watch reels on DVD.

TUAW Tip: Using your iPhone on a cruise ship {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Aug 19th 2008 1:39PM i went on a Carnival cruise to Italy this summer. The on-ship WiFi was $100 for 300min and slow while at sea.

I signed up for AT&T's International calling plan and their International data plan. The dirty little secret is that AT&T tells you, after you've added the 2 services, that you need to keep them for up to 3 months! You shouldn't cancel the plans until ALL the charges show up on your bill - then cancel them. Otherwise you'll pay full price for the charges that show up on a bill without the services.

I used both sparingly and would have been better off NOT signing up for international data. $59 for 50MB and I needed to keep it for 2 months for a 12 day cruise until all my charges showed up.

Mercedes-Benz introduces new iPhone integration kit {Engadget}

Jun 20th 2008 1:25PM I have a 2006 ML350 with COMMAND and it's rubbish. I actually wrote a letter to MB about how counterintuitive it is, its lack of features (no RDS in a 2006 vehicle?!) and the unnecessary button pushes to do basic features - not to mention the inconsistent interface from car model to model.

Did they make major improvements to it since then?

Resolved: Arguments for additional rental time aren't realistic {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Mar 6th 2008 1:20PM Let's ignore the (ignorant) parent issue for one moment while I illustrate just one legit reason why there should be extended viewing windows on rentals:
1. I rent movie to watch on a plane going to my vacation, business meeting, etc.
2. I am unable to finish the movie, have landed and am now enjoying a margarita in Cabo san Lucas and have NO intention of wasting my vacation time finishing the movie the same day I arrived!
3. A week later I am on the plane on the way home (sadly) and now have to pay $3 to watch the last 30 minutes of the same movie.
4. Bummer. Guess I'll watch re-runs of Tiki Bar instead. Love that Lala!

Fireproof your Christmas tree {DIY Life}

Dec 21st 2007 1:12PM I agree. But did you see that MythBusters on Christmas trees? I guess it's almost impossible to get a tree, even a very dried out one, to catch fire without a spark. And since all modern Christmas tree lights have fuses, it's unlikely for the spark to come from the lights.

In another episode they tested various recipes for keeping trees green and bleach in water was the winner (Viagra in water was #2...really).
