Ask TUAW: Choosing an iPhone, used Mac disposal, wake from sleep, podcast software and more {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 30th 2009 6:51PM I bought it from Apple and cancelled service, used software from the iPhone Dev Team (blog.iphone-dev.org), and after it was jailbroken ran Yellowsn0w/Ultrasn0w from Cydia and popped in my T-Mobile sim. It's very easy and there are tutorials all over. iClarified.com is my fav. It was much easier with the original iPhone 2G-I bought it with no contract and the unlock process through Zibri was a breeze, then after that the 2G just basically needs to be upgraded and jailbroken for it to be re-unlocked. The only things that don't work on T-Mobile are Visual Voicemail (Google Voice is great for that) and the 3G bands. EDGE is just fine for me though. Tethering isn't that bad on EDGE and there's wifi almost everywhere anyway. I pay roughly $40 a month with T-Mobile and it's just great (Unlimited data, 700 minutes, unlimited texting/picture messaging, free nights and weekends, free mobile to mobile). I highly suggest it to anyone sick of AT&T's crap.

Oct 29th 2009 6:03PM T-Mobile with my iPhone is by far the best thing that's ever happened to me cell phone wise. Screw AT&T. Go T-Mobile and ignore the 3G headaches. Plus it's cheaper

Oct 24th 2009 10:29PM My phone was stolen by pop/rasta crooner Sean Paul at the Rock The Mic tour, UMB Bank Pavilion, (now Verizon Wireless Amphitheater) in St. Louis/Maryland Heights a few years ago. I fell asleep, drunk, on a couch on one of the floors "lobbies" at the Holiday Inn Express Riverport/Airport. This was like 2003 or 2004. I guess he and his entourage walked by me and he (or one of his guys) picked my phone up and walked away. I had to work at the show later on and was freaking out. The phone rang and rang but nobody ever answered. Later in the evening the phone must have died. I gave it a call and checked my voicemails. To my surprise there were several voicemails from a string of "hoochie mamas" that all said basically the same thing-"Hey this is ______ from the ___________ show, call me back". So I called one of them back. She was _____ from Milwaukee and one of Sean Pauls bodyguards had her backstage a few nights ago. She said that "Dale", his body guard, had called her earlier in the day from my cell number. By this time I was already at the amphitheater and decided to try and get the head honcho to retrieve my cell. He basically said he couldn't harass the artists like that without 100% proof. I decided to enjoy the show and when I got home to Minnesota the next day, I went into Radio Shack and got a new phone. A few weeks or maybe a month later I received a call from a 212 area code number and the guy on the other end asking for said bodyguard. I began to flip out a bit and he defended himself. He said he was "Dale's" brother and wanted to know what I was doing at the Rock The Mic concert. My real job was promotional work for a company that set up shop at all the hip concerts to try and talk young people into checking out different companies, products, etc- but I told the guy that I was with 50 Cent (who was one of the headliners of Rock The Mic). The guys demeanor totally changed. He began to claim his undying love for "G-Unit" and that he was very sorry for any trouble "Dale" had caused. He said when he saw him next, he would get to the bottom of the phone incident and do what he could (stating that he was a bit bigger than his brother). I didn't believe him but gave him our warehouse delivery address just for the hell of it. I was shocked when not more than a few weeks later, my tattered Nokia showed up with a note. It said something along the lines of 'told you so' or something.

Still got that phone in a box somewhere. Not sure if this falls under the self inflicted damage but it's a good story. I still turn the radio or TV off anytime I see or hear Sean Paul.

Oct 17th 2009 2:31PM Typically they jump on the technology years after everyone else has, thus fooling people into believing that they invented, reinvented, or revolutionized it. Don't get me wrong I love my iPhone, iPod, MacBook. I even love my old G4 DA. Apple is late to the party on multiple fronts, and when they do show up people act like there was no party before they arrived. Or people think the beer they're drinking was invented by Apple. Whichever sounds right. Maybe change beer to kool-aide idk.
