BlackBerry Bold 9700 hands-on and impressions {Engadget}

Nov 5th 2009 10:44AM @Travis.

IIRC, you can't install applications on the Bold's internal memory, only on the memory assigned specifically for applications which on the Bold 9000 is 128MB and on the Bold2 9700 256MB.

Nov 5th 2009 1:27AM Can't really speak on BES other than it's love/hate. Love that it works but hate the additional costs to implement it.

As for storage, I'm assuming that you're working with the 88xx models? If so, I can see how it could be a problem. My 8830 has months worth of e-mail (no problems with memory in that regard) but it's the memory leak that causes problems. But if you're deploying anything post-88xx, it should be ok. Memory leaks aren't as bad and 64MB is good amount if the user is using it strictly for work only (no media, themes, applications, etc.)

Nov 5th 2009 1:21AM You would be surprised. Head over to any BlackBerry site and check out the forums and tell me you can't find people who just got a BlackBerry 6 months ago and aren't willing to fork out cash for the newest BlackBerry. For every person who's willing to buy the newest BlackBerry there are a bunch of people who are willing to buy that "outdated" BlackBerry and with that money it goes towards a new one.

It's the same as the iPhone. Even iPhone fanatics will argue that the 3G to 3GS really didn't have much in terms of additional features and expected much more but 3G owners were willing to upgrade to the 3GS only a year after. The 9700 is replacing the 9000 which was released last year.

Yes but only 128MB of that 1GB was available for applications which is what you would use it for anyway since you can't save and run applications off the microSD card. I don't know anyone who actually uses the internal storage (not incl. applications use) rather than the SD card. I guess if you prefer to do so, yeah can't argue, it's small.

Nov 5th 2009 12:45AM Sure, 256MB is awfully small if you're comparing it and it's uses to say the iPhone. But on a BlackBerry, all you're using the internal memory for are the basics (text messages, phone data, e-mail, etc.) and apps which isn't so much a problem because BlackBerry apps aren't even that big, few hundred kb's, rarely over 1 MB. For other media, you would be using an microSD card. So ultimately, in a BlackBerry world, 256MB isn't that bad.

But if you compare it to the iPhone and other media-centered phones, yeah 256MB is awfully small.

RIM posts job listing for 'WebKit Developer,' gets one step closer to a real browser {Engadget}

Nov 1st 2009 4:52PM Good stuff. Hopefully RIM doesn't rush things. Right now there is no reason to rush anything out so RIM shouldn't have that mentality like they need to catch up. Sure the browser sucks now but they're still in a good position where they don't need to capture some of the market and don't need to worry about losing it.

It's important that RIM makes a good first impression, the Storm was pretty awful at launch and regardless of OS 5.0, most won't even consider the Storm2 even if it is an improvement from the Storm.

Apple iPhone closing in on BlackBerry market share {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 28th 2009 6:32PM Yeah, never really got that remark. If this was a study or stat backing up that iPhone's are making a huge push in the enterprise market fine but this is just smartphones in general and it's no big surprise that the iPhone has mass commercial appeal. iPhone a fun smartphone? Yes, probably the best in that regard. For enterprise? I don't think so, I think many would stick to a BlackBerry.

Until Apple actually start to focus on the business side, the iPhone will always be inferior to the BlackBerry.

Verizon's BlackBerry Curve 8530 gets reviewed early {Engadget}

Oct 26th 2009 7:56PM Why do people always say it's the end of company X because of company Y? Damn, it's always going to be the end of BlackBerry. First it was the iPhone - so "advanced" at the time it's the end of RIM. 2 iPhone's later, RIM still standing strong. And lets be real here, the iPhone which was a commercial success, didn't do anything to RIM so I highly doubt any Android device who has yet to really hit mainstream is going to do anything to RIM.

But whatever, I'll jump on the bandwagon. RIM better step their game up, iPhone/Android/That motorola device is going to end them. Waterloo should be VERY concerned or be prepared to die.

Apple will officially support Windows 7 in Boot Camp before end of year {Engadget}

Oct 22nd 2009 9:41PM Very weird. It was a bug that Apple has since fixed. Even though you are using Boot Camp 3.0, I would suggest you download the multi-touch trackpad 1.1 update just for kicks if you haven't done so already just to see if it will work.

Apple will officially support Windows 7 in Boot Camp before end of year {Engadget}

Oct 22nd 2009 8:33PM Nope, just verified it, two-finger/secondary click works throughout the Windows 7. I too am running Boot Camp off Snow Leopard (Boot Camp services 3.0) and it's working so you might want to try a reinstall of some sort. I have it running on two MacBook Pro's.
