May 29th 2008 4:39PM "If you remember, when Desmond left the island for that year and went to be with Penny, he had that strange conversation with the shopkeeper about the engagement ring."
Michael, it's so difficult to keep up with it all... allow me to try to clarify.
He didn't leave the island. There was an episode where Desmond experienced stuff that happened in the past, but with his current knowledge/memories. Like a consciousness time travel thing. It was a result of him turning the fail safe key in Season 3.
Desmond's Time line in a nutshell:
> Becomes a Monk
> Meets & falls in Love w/Penny
> Tries to get permission to marry her
> Buys ring from old lady
> Joins Army
> Enters Sailboat race
> Ends up on The Island
> Meets the survivors of the crash
> Uses the fail-safe key, then flashes back to his early days w/ Penny.
