Nov 4th 2009 9:34PM You need to read up on economics... buying "American" in no way helps your economy. Trade is the key to wealth, and no economy does better isolated.
If you think [us] Europeans will buy American while you block imports from every other country you are very, very wrong.
The whole point is that trade creates [more] jobs, wealth and GNP for both sides.
And aren't you Americans supposed to be capitalists? You buy the product that offers the best value for your money, regardless of it's origins, and the market regulates itself [by innovating, research, adjusting prices and creating better quality products for you to buy].

Nov 4th 2009 8:09PM You are so full of it! You don't even know what you are talking about, Norway's not even socialist. I see that you know your Republican propaganda all right. The problem is that Norway and Scandinavia is Third Way, both a capitalist state and a social-democracy. You cannot call it "Socialism", even though it's obvious you have no clue what either means.
And stop mixing European countries and thousands of years of history! While you might have learned about feudalism in some major European countries, that does not make it the common heritage of all! The Vikings, my ancestors, had their leaders but hardly any landed gentry to lord over them!!!
Subjugate their people?! You are one loud mouth! Your people have far less freedom than my own compatriots. Your "justice" system is pathetic. You should be the one to speak! If you look at any international rankings you will quickly find that most Nordic countries outperform your society in freedoms. Oh, and in productivity as well.
And here comes to old stereotype that "density and geography" separates the US from Europe... what nonsense! Do you even have a map? Norway has a LOWER population density than the US, FAR LOWER! You have to STOP thinking about European countries as cities like London and Paris.
We really need our cars here, like in the Dakotas/Minnesota/Montana, wide open spaces. And it's difficult to run a bus service for a small, wide spread population.
The EU is far more accountable than the US federal government, 27 countries governments make sure of that. First of all the EU is *not* the federal government of Europe. Secondly, the EU is not synonymous with Europe. You really should not talk about a subject you know little about. You are quick to comment about a complex super-national structure you have little knowledge of.

Actually most European countries already tax on the basis of emissions...

Almost all West-European countries now levy some form of CO2 tax on passenger cars. According to a survey done by ACEA, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.

Nov 4th 2009 11:05AM All cars in Norway are subject to heavy taxes!
The reasoning being that we need to keep consumption low, for it's own sake, and more recently for the benefit of the "environment" (green taxes).
Norway is very wealthy, has no debt and the economy is still in good shape. So the taxes are NOT needed to finance the national budget!
Because of the taxes even a normal car costs more than $40.000-50.000. You cannot get a car for less than $27.000, not even a small hatchback.
Well, at least our salaries are good. And we do have Universal healthcare :)

Oct 28th 2009 12:54PM Are you even European? Those small Peugeots are quite sturdy.
And they're not made for Americans, as a European I quite like them.
Who cares what non-Europeans feel about a car not made for them?!

Oct 24th 2009 10:15AM You are forgetting something important. Sweden is not alone, it is part of the worlds largest economy, the European Union. If China wants access to the EU, it better treat member nations nicely!
In 2007, the U.S. lost its seat to the European Union as the world's largest economy. The EU's economy produced $14.4 trillion in goods and services, while U.S. GDP came in at $13.86 trillion.

Oct 23rd 2009 10:31PM Just a minor correction. The Euro was once, just once, a little less worth than the Dollar. It was just after the launch, and ever since that day it has been more worth. So in general you are correct.
