Jan 28th 2008 6:49PM Funny you should say that. I'm an Industrial Design Engineering student, and I'm studying "the influences of Japan and zen-buddhist principles on modern design" right now.
One of these zen design principles is Kanso, simplicity. I agree that none of these desings really breathes simplicity. None except the W61P. I really like that one.

- Game folder... what a feature, and btw, smart folders do exist in OSX. What's more, I happen to hate the way Explorer creates folders and starts organizing your stuff for you with the 'My Pictures' and 'My Documents' and 'My Music' and now 'My Games', shortcuts here and there. There's no consistent way in which user documents are stored. Windows users may have grown familiar with it, but I find it really not intuitive. You might argue that the OSX way of storing files isn't obvious to new users either, but I know a lot of happy switchers.
- Network map... it has been possible for a long time to create an alias (folder shortcut in Windows speak) from a network drive and make the drive mount on boot. This is not really something "original"
- Quick links... have you ever used OSX at all? It's been there from the beginning.
- Flip 3D: Exposé has been around since OSX 10.3 (correct me if I'm wrong). It does the same thing, only more intuitively and faster.
- Live preview in the Task Bar: how about live preview in the Dock?
- I was looking for something to mention Spaces, but I guess we'll have to wait for Windows 7. Oh, and btw, it does live preview too.
So you see these "originalities" aren't really original. They are there in OSX and most of them have been there long before Vista.

I am sure Vista does have features OSX doesn't have, and I'm sure Apple will copy them if they add to the functionality of the OS, but the last thing you said there is just gross. First of all, you are insulting quite a lot of people here. Secondly if that's what Windows users can boast over OSX, that they can use a 2 button mouse, it's just sad. Third and last: it's just not true. Two-button mice have been around for a while now, also for Macs.

Yes it's true that there are less Mac users and it's true that hackers will focus more on Windows because there's a lot more to gain.
However, you can't deny that OSX is Unix based and if you know anything about OS's, you'll agree that Unix is way more secure than Windows, which is why Unix based OS's are more popular for servers.
And that's in my opinion the most important reason why hackers focus on Windows: it's just plain easier.

I agree Apple has copied stuff in the past and they'll keep doing it, just like everyone else in tech business.
However, it's not because the Dock and Taskbar don't look the same or the "Windows don't even minimize in the same way" Microsoft didn't copy a lot from OSX. They did, and there's no point in denying that.
Apple started the Aqua revolution a long time ago with the iMac and OSX 10.0/10.1. Microsoft has finally "caught up", not saying that whatever Apple does should be the standard, but they basically just put some transparency and shininess in it. I am not too familiar with the inner workings of Windows Vista, so I can't comment on that, but I did indeed check benchmarks and XP is quite a bit faster.
To continue my rant on the design aspect of Vista: I'm not saying their designers didn't do a great job, but they did a great job copying OSX, and in particular Aqua.
At the moment Apple is moving away from Aqua as in shininess and glossy buttons. They just have some of the best designers in the world working for them, and they keep doing a great job, pushing it even further without resorting to just copying good stuff from other designers. Don't get me wrong, copying is part of being a good designer, but you can't just copy without thinking it through.
