GPS-equipped Car Camera Voyager Pro logs fender benders {Engadget}

Jul 20th 2008 1:40AM Man, you have one crappy insurance company.

But with car insurance, as with life in general, you really do get what you pay for.

My insurance company may not be the cheapest in the world, but the last time a car rear-ended me, they paid for absolutely everything, including the $117 to get my car out of the impound lot where the stupid police put it while I was in the hospital overnight. Then once they got done paying for all of my stuff, they used their own lawyers to go after the moron who hit me, and got most of their money back.

IMHO, that's exactly how it should work.

Tokyoflash's Galaxy: a watch only a nerd could love {Engadget}

Jul 4th 2008 11:16AM Very unique. Like the old binary clock that I (used to have) at my desk. But easier to read.

Tokyoflash's Galaxy: a watch only a nerd could love {Engadget}

Jul 4th 2008 11:06AM When was the last time that any of you can recall that a watch had significant impact on whether or not you hooked up that evening? So these statements about how that watch is or isn't going to get you any play just doesn't make sense to me.

Because if you can find me the watch that DOES get you play, I'll pay good money, and finder's fees....

Toyota to introduce plug-in hybrid for 2010, hybrid versions of all cars by 2029 {Engadget}

Jun 13th 2008 2:31PM Actually, there are several reasons why gas prices have so dramatically increased, and most of them have nothing to do with the US.

First of all, look at pure supply and demand. The price increases simply couldn't be supported if there wasn't another factor also increasing. And with supply basically level at the moment, the only other factor is demand, and yes, it is increasing. You've got countries emerging from the "stone ages" and becoming serious oil-consuming countries, like India and China. The demand doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon, so the price increases are easily supported by the global economy.

Also, you'll notice that in a country where our fuel prices are so closely tied to the price of crude on the open market (thanks to our low taxes and limited subsidies), these massive increases in prices have hardly impacted our demand. Over the past year, our demand for oil has dropped less than 2%. So our demand for oil in this country doesn't seem to be too closely tied to the price either.

Thus, prices continue to increase. And even if our demand here in the US slows down, it doesn't look like those prices will start dropping anytime soon.

Microsoft i'm initiative raises $1.3 million for charity {Download Squad}

Apr 25th 2008 4:03PM I have to agree. I'm no big fan of Microsoft, or Apple for that matter, but I have MS, and when I saw the i'm initiative, I blogged about it, and signed up for it.

I don't see too many other companies doing it. At least Microsoft is.

And I am fully aware of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (they're customers of ours). They do great work, too. For all the haters they have, you have to admit they do some good work.

Dallas considers shutting off red light cams, since they're working too well and harming revenue {Engadget}

Mar 16th 2008 7:14PM And here I thought that poor yellow light timings were because traffic engineers were complete morons.

Let's expound on those "signs that show your speed." Those are called "smart trailers," not because they possess any super intelligence, but because they contain a laptop which records the times of day when the highest number of people are speeding through that area. Plot this on a graph over 24 hours, and the peaks are when you should be posting a unit with a radar gun and a ticket pad.

The nice thing about the smart trailers is that can be moved around to any area that they're needed. It's "seemingly" random, which increases the likelihood that when you see one, you'll slow down. Take note of the location the next time you see one. I'll bet you within a few weeks, you'll see a police officer clocking traffic at some time on that same street.

Smart trailers have been found to be very effective in determining when the most ideal time is to post an officer to slow down traffic (read: make money). Maximizes ticket output while minimizing officers' wasted time clocking traffic that isn't likely to be speeding.

Don't think it's about making money? In Colorado, to where do we mail our check when we get a speeding ticket? The police department? Nope. The return address is the Colorado Department of Revenue. Not that I'd know or anything...

Which has nothing to do with red-light cameras. State law here says that an officer has to observe the infraction before a citation can be issued. Kinda ruins the whole automated camera idea.

AT&T gets official with BlackBerry Pearl 8120 {Engadget}

Mar 15th 2008 11:12PM It'll get to the stores.....eventually.

Even with it being only offered on the Premier site, it's only available with new service, or when you're eligible to upgrade on your current service. Unless you want to pay more for it, that is.

I not eligible for upgrade pricing until May.
