Number port stats suggest curious trends in iPhone 3G launch {Engadget Mobile}

Jul 22nd 2008 4:41PM You can't nitpick about "only 1000 ports" being used to draw a conclusion- pretty much every survey samples around 1000 people because that gets good accuracy and still allows for easy-to-use distributions to describe the data. A bigger problem (which you mention first) is that we're only taking data from one T-Mobile distributor.

The biggest problem is that you only tell me that the percentage of people porting from T-Mobile to AT&T is lower than it was last time. How did it change in absolute terms? Had there been a trend of people porting less to AT&T now than before? I also would imagine that people porting to T-Mobile care much less about data and, therefore, probably have lower monthly payments than those who ported away from T-Mobile. None of this is answered by the one random wholesaler.

Poll: fixed or variable width content for Engadget? {Engadget}

May 21st 2008 5:20PM Maybe I'm missing something here, but why can't this be an option as part of your profile settings or a special button/website address so that people can choose which style they prefer. Is it not possible to leave it variable width but provide a fixed-width option?

3K RazorBook is revised 3K Longitude 400 -- still crappy {Engadget}

May 13th 2008 12:55AM Hell, my mp3 player has a 400mhz dual-core ARM processor. This thing is a glorified cell phone at an increased form factor and price. Sure, you get a "regular" (non-mobile) operating system, but that's the only benefit this has over any new smartphone. Other 7-10 inch laptops offer better processors and higher-resolution displays for not much more money. That's the point.

The Professor: GM's new old engine tech, moon mirrors, the dangers of space war debris {Engadget}

May 4th 2008 7:20PM @stefan

So, let me get this straight- A more efficient engine shouldn't be used with a hybrid because you determine that hybrids are not helpful. This would be some great logic if you were a dictator or could control minds, but it seems like people are still buying hybrid cars. Why not try to make them more efficient, if people are going to use them anyways?

Hitachi's 1.5 UltraThin LCD HDTVs now available in US {Engadget}

May 1st 2008 8:15PM If you look hard enough, "most" plasmas also have some of the problems you listed, especially with juddering. As far as I can tell, it's a refresh-rate problem, not a technological one (these top two sizes at least refresh at 120Hz, which means that 24fps and 30fps sources are displayed without problems) .Viewing angles on LCD's are more than adequate for everyone I know, and the color gamut "problem" can be mitigated with an LED-backlit LCD.

Basically, the problems you're spouting are not really related to this specific set of LCD's (except maybe in the color gamut, I am really not sure how well their dynamic contrast algorithms work), you just want to complain because your favorite kind of TV is going out of style. Plasmas can never overcome higher weights and power consumption. LCD has continued to improve as a technology (and LED's have made for higher-contrast and more efficient backlighting). You can claim to be a snob who notices subtle differences, but these tv's are still damn cool.
