OLPC XO officially gets Windows XP, children of the world to be assimilated {Engadget}
May 15th 2008 8:15PM I prefer Windows myself, but it's sad to see such a great project like this be sidetracked by Microsoft having to force its corporate greed into the action - sure, they may not make a lot of money off this specific deal, but if everyone learns on Windows they're more likely to use/buy it later on.
I just don't think Windows is necessary for something like this - it's for kids to learn to use computers, to do basic word-processing and "educational" games, and maybe a little scripting - it doesn't need XP, nor are there any advantages to having XP besides Microsoft getting them while they're young. Don't fix it if it isn't broken.

May 15th 2008 8:05PM Mike makes a good point - the MB is heavy. It's only a pound lighter than it's 15" cousin, the MBP. If you do choose 13" and don't absolutely need a Mac, go find a PC that's lighter. Trust me, carrying 5+ pounds on a long day of classes makes life suck. I'd shoot for the 4lb range - I believe the Dell M1330 fits in nicely, with a nice bit of power.

May 15th 2008 8:00PM Agreed - I had a 15" gaming laptop (6 pounds, roughly equal to a MacBook Pro) that I took to class and I hated my life. I already had a gaming desktop, so it was really overkill. I got an Eee for taking to class (notes, web, email - does it all just fine) and I have my desktop for gaming, editing, and just having a large screen and full-size layout. I haven't touched the 15" laptop in months - don't need that much power in class, and I have my desktop in my room.
Your best bet is to get a low-priced desktop that meets your needs (if gaming/editing, $1000, if you just need a bigger screen and basic graphics to use as an all-purpose base station, $600) and then an Eee ($400-500) for your class needs.
If you do choose the MacBook route (or even big PC brands like Sony or Lenovo), check out your campus computer store - you can save an extra couple hundred off of Apple's "Academic" prices if your campus store sells enough volume.

May 15th 2008 7:49PM Buy and Eee and a nice desktop. You have mobility and power in just the right combination. I used to have a full-size gaming laptop that I dragged to class - what a joke that was.

May 13th 2008 9:02PM Yes, nuclear is a good option, but the general public is scared to death of it despite newer technologies that would make new plants perfectly safe. Wind power is totally clean, and heck, why not explore every possible solution?
