The iPhone 3G on AT&T: we ask the burning questions {Engadget Mobile}
Jun 11th 2008 10:16AM Any existing iPhone customer will be allowed to upgrade to this device for the sale pricing as long as their account is in good standing. All other AT&T customers must be within the normal upgrade eligibility period.
The iPhone 3G will NOT be allowed on prepaid service.
Straight from my manager here at AT&T.
The iPhone 3G on AT&T: we ask the burning questions {Engadget Mobile}
Jun 10th 2008 3:56PM You must not have read the WWDC 2008 press releases. TomTom is making turn by turn directions available to the iPhone shortly after launch. There was also something mentioned about video recording. I didn't see any mention of MMS yet, but Apple has not released a full spec list yet, just what you can make out from the FCC site.

Jun 10th 2008 2:56PM For people not happy about not getting 2 year price if they are in a contract:
This is the same pricing setup that exists on every phone on just about every US network. You sign a 2 year contract to get a sale price on the phone. If people could come in and get the sale price whenever they wanted, there would be no point to contracts. No one is getting screwed if they are only 2 months, 6 months, or 14 months into a 2 year contract and are not eligible to take advantage of 2 year pricing. That is why people sign contracts. As an AT&T RSC I am relieved that the iPhone will no longer be getting different/special treatment.
And people can be angry that the iPhone is on AT&T, but almost every company has phones that are exclusive to them. I don't see anyone complaining about the new touch screen BlackBerry coming only to Verizon...
Verizon gets official with $28 billion Alltel acquisition {Engadget Mobile}
Jun 5th 2008 1:35PM This is not unexpected at all. I used to work for Alltel until October, and these talks were going on for almost a whole year before I quit. The funny thing is that Alltel and Verizon Execs hate each other.
This will make them the largest customer wise and geographically.
And whoever said that internet on regular AT&T phones is $20 is wrong. They dropped it to $15 2 months ago at least. PDA and Blackberrys are $30 for internet unless you need exchange support or tethering.
BlackBerry touchscreen phone to be dubbed 'Thunder' {Engadget Mobile}
May 13th 2008 2:14PM I have mixed feelings about this upcoming device.
Hopefully they revise the UI because the current one is too small and would not be finger friendly at all. And it's not just the UI size I am concerned with. To make a touch-screen even useful on a BlackBerry, the entire UI would need almost a complete overhaul.
In any case, if they keep their e-mail support and corporate appeal, with a cleaner interface, and possibly a better web browser, this phone could be a game changer for RIM.
Sprint affiliate gets litigious to block Clearwire WiMAX deal {Engadget Mobile}
May 12th 2008 5:29PM Point is, iPCS is a tough affiliate for Sprint to have to put up with. When Sprint tried to buy iPCS they wanted almost double what their stock was worth.
Sprint affiliate gets litigious to block Clearwire WiMAX deal {Engadget Mobile}
May 12th 2008 5:27PM I used to work for an Authorized Agent in Northern Michigan, which is an iPCS market. When Sprint and Nextel Merged, we could not sell any Nextel phones that had the new Sprint Logo on them because iPCS thought this would hurt their sales. We finally just quit selling nextel as it was getting harder to find the phones without the new logo. If I remember correctly, iPCS sued Wal-Mart for allowing its Connection Centers to carry Nextel with the new logo, and Wal-Mart pulled Nextel in its iPCS markets.
School cellphone ban upheld by New York court {Engadget Mobile}
Apr 27th 2008 12:31PM I agree with the NY courts on this. Cell phones should NOT be allowed to be used during class. I don't think that students should have to turn their phones in every day, but it is what it is. Sadly, too many times the many will pay for the actions of the few.
The problem with phones in schools is not that people have a communication line to home or something like that. No. The problem is that cell phones are distracting. Most kids think that their cell phones are just toys and they sit and text about nothing, or they play cell phone games, or they are on the internet instead of paying attention to class. The truth is, students DO NOT need to have cell phones in school to funtion, live, or learn.
I have no problem with a kid having a phone in their pocket in case they need to call home, or in case someone is harassing them, but that never happens. If kids actually carried cell phones purely for this reason, they would NOT take them out unless they actually needed to call home, and this issue would never have gone to court.
And to clarify one last issue I have regarding cell phones: There is no such law, amendmant or any other legal document that says that Americans have a right to carry cell phones. That is why it is legal for government buildings, hospitals, or any public place for that matter to prohibit the use of cell phones on their property. If I use my cell phone at a hospital, and security wants to confinscate it until I leave, there is no law that says they cannot take my phone.
The second-gen iPhone: 3G, GPS, only slightly thicker {Engadget}
Apr 26th 2008 11:03AM Those of you that feel that the iPhone is not the king of phones are correct. It does not have every feature available in the mobile phone world, this much is obvious. But the iPhone stands out for one huge reason.
You know what makes the iPhone shine? Do you know why it stands out so much? Because people will debate the heck out of the phone at places like engadget. You people are willing to submit trash talk and spec swapping just to prove why the phone is better or worse than another.
I own a Tilt and an iPhone, and I like a bit about both. I like 3rd party apps for Winmo and office mobile, as well as MMS. I like the iPhone interface much more because is is simple and streamlined. The web browser is awesome on an iPhone even without flash (btw, Adobe said they will be releasing flash for the iPhone soon.) I like my GPS on my Tilt and I like my custom skins. I do not like the touch screen on my Tilt, and I hate having to use a stylus to be accurate with on screen controls.
And BTW, not all 3rd party apps on the iPhone will cost. There will be free apps available to the iPhone too.
I am not a fanboy. No. As a matter of fact, there is not much I like about Apple. But I do like my iPhone with all of its short comings and all. I am not saying it is better or worse than any WinMo phone I have used because that is a never ending debate.
So keep on arguing and debating because THAT is what makes the iPhone shine.
