Bill proposes bill break: five-year wireless tax freeze on the table {Engadget Mobile}

Jul 20th 2008 1:57PM But telephone taxes are an *easy* tax for any government (city, county, state, federal) to pull taxes. They know everyone uses the phone so everyone has to pay the tax.

Toronto's public health department recommends kids limit mobile use {Engadget Mobile}

Jul 20th 2008 1:54PM Why is it that this thing about brain tumors keeps getting trotted out yet there's yet to be any proof that it does or could happen to someone who uses a mobile phone?

Will It Blend? iPhone 3G edition {Engadget}

Jul 12th 2008 7:05PM This was a little amusing the first time 'round. This is not really any *more* amusing with the new model. BFD.

82% of America never uses text messaging {Engadget Mobile}

Jul 7th 2008 11:22PM I think the reason SMS/text messaging is not more popular in the US is that generally it's cheaper to actually make a voice call than to send a text message unless you have a text message plan with an allowance. Text message has the possibility of being a little more discreet but that's it. Earlier TDMA models you couldn't even compose messages all you could do is receive messages. On CDMA text messaging wasn't even part of the standard and was added as an afterthought.

Everyone peeved at iPhone 3G pricing on some carriers -- Apple included? {Engadget Mobile}

Jul 7th 2008 11:13AM There's 0 GSM competition in Canada. That's why Rogers can charge whatever they like. When Rogers absorbed Fido one of the first things they did was to eliminate "City Fido" which was a plan that you could make unlimited calls in your local area for $40 per month. Of course they quashed that as it was a competitor for their own VOiP service (Rogers also owns Rogers Cable and Rogers Video as well.)

T-Mobile first to blanket UK in HSUPA {Engadget Mobile}

Jul 4th 2008 11:49AM If you're counting on T-Mobile USA to be in the forefront of what's going on with 3G, 4G or whatever comes down the pike you're going to be sorely disappointed. T-Mobile has thus far shown themselves to be basically the "value" carrier. They don't have as much as the big boys Verizon or AT&T, but then again they didn't have the 13 year head start that those "cellular" carriers had either. T-Mobile will always be at a disadvantage being limited to PCS 1900. The only possible way that T-Mobile could leap to the front is if they bought either AT&T or Verizon. The likelihood of that happening is practically nil. This is part of the same reason why T-Mobile's selection of phones is so dismal as well.

T-Mobile bumping per-text rates again {Engadget Mobile}

Jun 30th 2008 5:49PM "it's a pretty solid reminder that even casual texters are better off on a legit messaging plan these days." which is just what the carriers want you to do! Considering that text messaging costs the carrier pretty much close to nil it's a good way to get you by the short ones.

The reason T-Mobile is doing this along with other stuff like no round the clock CC any longer is that they think they are in the same league with the big boys (death Star and Verizon.) Well, they're better than they were but they're hardly in the same league as the "big boys." T-Mobile always competed on "value" but I can see that's going to come to an end as well. Increasing your text message rate by 400% (it wasn't that many years ago that it was only 5¢/message) over five years shows "how far they've come."

Jun 19th 2008 6:41PM What is it with Rogers/Fido's thing about three year contracts?

Nokia 1508: CDMA, and that's about it {Engadget Mobile}

Jun 14th 2008 5:29PM The 2610 has to be one of the worst designed Nokia "40 series" phones. That stupid "mirror" display is gawdawful to try to see the display. I'm not sure what's with Nokia designs. For a while they were churning out models with crazy-ass keypad designs (reverse circular 3650, two numbers per key 3595) and on and on.
