You can do it, too: Convert a Toyota 4runner to diesel, then to veggie oil {Autoblog Green}
Oct 7th 2008 2:57PM This diesel engine is great, i've driven several when I was abroad in Oz, great power and even better fuel economy. Its nice that he had it converted, but technically it isnt street legal ANYWHERE in the United States, as per federal law.
State emissions/registration laws aside take second fiddle. Even in Florida where there isn't a mandatory emissions inspection, its technically illegal federally.
See this bureaucratic, poorly researched and biased document from the EPA that is still in effect for over 17 years... -> http://www.epa.gov/compliance/resources/policies/civil/caa/mobile/engswitch.pdf specifically the middle of page 2
I love how relevant the cars used in examples are, Pontiac Grand Am with Olds Calais... ha

GM and National Governors Association team on E85 infrastructure {Autoblog Green}
Jul 15th 2008 9:06AM This is the dumbest technology I've seen in a while. Ethanol can be made from ANY organic matter, ANY food waste. Why don't we just collect what we already have as a raw material for this fuel? Food waste should be collected along with other recyclables, even if a small percentage of our population participates, the early adopters, the dent in the amount of actively grown vegetation for this project will be huge. Start with cities like NYC (where I live) where many people live in close proximity in order to reduce the amount of trucks/distance needed to start this infrastructure. Will it be a pain initially? of course, will it lower food prices, fuel prices, reduce the amount of trash going to landfills, cause us to waste less... yes.
If the gov't insists on having farmers grow crops for this purpose in addition to using waste materials, why use food? grow GMO grasses, weeds, anything that has a cell wall and grows like crazy with minimal care, not corn
Lower speed limit movement spreading as John Warner jumps aboard {Autoblog Green}
Jul 11th 2008 8:54AM People in this country cannot drive. If one is trained to operate their vehicle at higher speeds safely its not inherently more dangerous to drive faster than 55. In addition, 55 is an ARBITRARY number. I'm all for saving gas but this is ridiculous, 55 is just too slow to drive on a highway in my opinion. I agree with some of the comments above. Especially enforcing passing on the left, lane rules and a minimum speed in the left lane.
I believe a lower speed limit will increase police revenue more than any significant decrease in traffic accidents. If they want to save gas, then roads should be studied for bottlenecks and traffic patterns and modified accordingly. Forcing a blanket change of behavior on people (especially Americans) will only anger the majority (thats who these laws are to benefit anyway right???). Sitting in traffic idling, like I did on the belt parkway for an hour in brooklyn yesterday, is the single biggest waster of fuel. The cause of the traffic yesterday? Exit ramps designed during the eisenhower era back when far less traffic was on the roads leads to a bottle next at EVERY SINGLE EXIT OR ENTRANCE. The problem is primarily an engineering one, not a social one.
