Study says more than 10,000 laptops go missing at US airports each week {Engadget}

Jul 6th 2008 12:57PM
That article mentions some of the _technical_ ways to deal with a lost/stolen laptop ... but, that completely misses the real cause of these missing laptops: people doing stupid things.

1) don't check the laptop in your luggage
2) LIKE ANY OTHER CARRY-ON don't leave it alone. Don't turn away for a minute. As soon as you're done using it, put it back in its bag, and always keep the bag on you or touching you .... such as always have your arm through the shoulder strap, even if the bag is sitting on the chair spot next to the one you're sitting at.
3) When you're going through the security stop, keep a keen eye on your laptop bag. Care more about that than about your shoes (most places will let you pick up your stuff, and walk in your socks over to the nearest row of seating to put your shoes back on).

In otherwords: don't be stupid. You don't need a lowjack for this. or some sort of proximity sensor. You need to vigilant and exercise common sense.

Jun 27th 2008 10:16AM Is this where the phrase "Getting Rogered" comes from?

Now:

1) put Android on it,
2) make it work with T-Mobile USA 3G _AND_ AT&T 3G,
3) get it out on the market, unbranded and unlocked.

Then we're in business.

Nokia dishes out OS2008 Feature Upgrade for N810 / N800 {Engadget}

Jun 24th 2008 5:41PM
If I go to anything over a NIT, it'll probably be the Gigabyte M528, or some similar Linux MID device. Depending on specifics, perhaps in combination with an Android phone, or S60 phone (or maybe just an Android phone, again depending upon specifics).

Nokia just doesn't seem to want to address certain issues that I think are important. Not that I expect them to just listen to me, but I will vote with my feet/dollars if someone produces something closer to what I want. The M528 might be it (depending on how exactly it handles storage, SD cards, and wifi).

Glad to see another version of the OS is out.

So, Modest is in. What about the new IM client structure, which should now support more than just Jabber?

Jun 24th 2008 5:19PM backup restores some things, but not everything. I think you still have to re-install applications, for example.

Are you really surprised that MS finally got around to ripping off Hildon (which is several years old)?

Motorola gets official with GPS-packing MING A1600, A1800 {Engadget}

Zadillo: thanks. But.. bleh. Should have 3G in this day and age. Though, if these are intended for asian markets, I can see why they don't have UMTS/HSPA. But why not EVDO?

Actually, they also give you the option to pay full price for the handset and have no contract (flexpay month to month).

Seems like a decent way to do early termination, it's not quite "pro-rated", which would be ideal.

Jun 24th 2008 3:21PM Major manufacturer (for now) phone with dual SIM cards? Coooool.

EVDO?
WCDMA/UMTS/HSPA (and on which frequencies)?
Which GSM networks?
Which Bluetooth profiles?
Why no Wifi!?

Could be a nice companion for a Nokia Tablet, or a MID, if it's done right.
