Flash on its way for the iPhone (again)? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 1st 2008 8:19PM @thedude

Not in this case, it isn't. Only for software that makes it to the phone, not ones that haven't released which this falls under.

What is The Brick? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Sep 23rd 2008 10:55PM My top three guesses, in order:
1) Servers that are cheap enough for business users to eat up.
2) Product line to replace the Mini at a smaller price point than the mini.
3) "Baseline" model MB with nothing more than a DVD drive (no burning) and a USB/power/extender combo port. Like #2, aggresively cheaper than the current MB line.
4) Gaming platform, possibly iPhone OSX based.

What I would bet (if you were near me) that it wouldn't be:
1) OSX on non-Apple hardware, they killed that idea off twice before pre-OSX so I highly doubt anything would happen that way. Besides, it would help Microsoft clout Dell, HP, etc to buy more of their product (they already do that very well). Remember HP had a relationship w/ Apple over the iPod and that ended pretty quick.
2) WINE on OSX would kill not only Crossover (which worked hard to achieve WINE) but it's own development as most developers would stick to Windows as a 'common denominator to develop for,' not OSX. Once again, Windows prevails if this happened.
3) A tablet that isn't based on current MacOSX uses, as that would kill of the Touch and iPhone. But, such a tablet could break into the embedded sectors really well.

Sidekick-esque UTStarcom Knick surfaces for AT&T {Engadget Mobile}

Sep 22nd 2008 6:42PM What'll be funny is when AT&T decides to consider it a PDA and charge $30/month for data (not including MMS/SMS) on this thing. If they do, it'll lose to the Sidekick in no time:
- it will cost more per month to have data on this thing, add in that you'd probably have to have a voice plan too (otherwise, it'll cost a ton more per month than the currently possible data-plan-only Sidekick)
- you don't need a contract on the Sidekick (which is a big deal for the apparent target groups) and still costs, at least online, for the same price as the expected price on this one w/ contract (the looks of it being $199 with 2-yr contract, according to the survey).

Free iTunes HD TV shows {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Sep 11th 2008 2:41AM The SD ones are 853x480, but the HD ones are 720p HD (1280x720). The info on a HD download in iTunes says so.

Recheck your HD downloads again.

Netshare iPhone tethering app reappears in the App Store. Update: oh, it's down again. {Engadget}

Aug 1st 2008 5:48PM If anything, it should work like the tethering that has been working on jailbroken phones. Firefox somehow needs to know that it has to use the Socks server's DNS settings.

For one, like many said, Firefox needs to have the socks proxy info in Settings, then goto about:config and set network.proxy.socks_remote_dns to true and make sure network.proxy.socks and network.proxy.socks.port are filled in correctly to your proxy address and ports listed on the NetShare app. That should then work correctly.

AT&T tells the FCC it'll cut off wireless P2P users {Engadget Mobile}

Jul 30th 2008 7:43PM AOL Radio on the iPhone does streaming, and it is not only legit but popular and uses up data just as much as a P2P can (sometimes even more). Look at MobileTV on other phone, and you can understand that AT&T's double standard is plain stupid.
Although AT&T says they allow some 'authorized' streaming programs (XM Radio, AT&T MobileTV, etc), the 'source' of streaming really shouldn't matter.

Besides, with 3G and other items, people are starting to use cell phones as their primary internet source, especially with the popularity of smartphone devices that utilize non-WAP sites. It's inevitable that this will become the primary source of data use. Just as more people use cell phones as their only phone, portable data use will skyrocket soon.

Cell companies need to realize they should work on getting the structure to handle the impending surges of data use, not kick people off due to stupidity and ignorance.

AT&T WiFi portal for iPhone users shows up at Starbucks {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Apr 20th 2008 5:47PM If you mean inclusive access for free with a valid AT&T data plan, then that would be great. However, I don't see that happening. AT&T tried doing an offer like they did with DSL users (additional fee and get unlimited WiFi access). That was dropped well before the plan wireless data plan changes in January.

Another issue I see: I went to a Barnes&Noble yesterday and I could not find a way to get that '2 hours of free access,' just like others said in posts. How does one get such 2-hour free access?

Apple licenses ActiveSync for the iPhone {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Mar 6th 2008 10:46PM I wonder about this too.

It'd be a good idea to do that Apple: not only push MS ActiveSync OTA syncing, but .mac OTA syncing too.
So then I can have everything in sync at the same time, Exchange, iCal/Address Book and iPhone.

iPod/iPhone firmware update 1.1.4 released {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Feb 26th 2008 2:17PM Has it fixed the dropped calls issue? I really, really hope so.
