eMachines bores us to tears, burns our eyes with cheap new desktops {Engadget}

Jul 2nd 2008 4:10PM 1GB RAM is fine for Vista without Aero.
@kal: Apple doesn't just make things in white plastic anymore. MacBook, AirPort, and iPhone 3G are the only white plastic products if I'm not mistaken. The rest are anodized aluminum.

Sony Vaio FW and SR series show up on Circuit City {Engadget}

Jun 29th 2008 4:31PM The Sony VAIO X505 used that keyboard style in 2004.
The MacBook was first released in 2006.

The 16.4" screen is a new standard using a 16:9 aspect ratio and movie watching.

Atom-powered D945GCLF Mini-ITX motherboard now available {Engadget}

May 19th 2008 7:55PM The 1.6GHz Atom will probably provide 55% of the performance of Celeron D 2.66GHz. (Not counting hyperthreading.)

As far as I can find:
PCMark05 scores
Celeron D 331 (2.66GHz) - 2632
(UMPCPortal ~0.87/MHz) Atom 1.6GHz ~ 1392

Considering the Celerons had an 84W TDP and the Atoms have a 2-4W TDP, half to two-thirds the performance isn't too bad.

HP 2133 shows up on Amazon as the Mini-Note PC {Engadget}

Apr 7th 2008 11:12PM Well, this has a 8.9" screen. More comparable with the EEE PC 900 which is also expected to start at ~$499.

EEE PC 900

Intel breaks Wind with first Atom-based ultra-portables in the wild {Engadget}

Apr 1st 2008 7:28PM The Atom CPUs use way less power, run cooler, and are fractions of the price.

1.6GHz Atom 230, 4W TDP - $29
1.66GHz Atom N270, 2W TDP - $44
1.6GHz C2D (Air), 20W TDP - $289 (at least, since that's for the non-custom package version)

Now, the Core 2 will completely obliterate the Atom at the same clock speed, but these machines are tiny secondary machines (or cheap starter computers) at under $500. The smaller footprint and lower target price force manufacturers to use lower power, lower heat, but cheap components.

The MBA is $1,800 and is full-size and very capable of being one's primary computer despite its port deficiency.

The markets are very different despite both being ultraportables.

SanDisk's Sansa Fuze reviewed {Engadget}

Mar 14th 2008 6:55PM The Sansa line has an average UI, but it needs to be overhauled to be faster and more aesthetically pleasing. (I have an e200 series.)

If the Fuze is no different, the microSD card slot (on the Sansa e200) is kind of pointless since it requires a database refresh every time you boot up with a card installed (regardless of whether or not the files have been changed).

The screen on the View has an overcast to it, and if what CNET says is true, the View is no different. It's not the Nano's resolution (the same as on the Fuze), it's the screen quality. (colors, brightness, etc.)

Asus shows off new lineup of Eee PC add-ons {Engadget}

Mar 2nd 2008 5:17PM The EEE has 3 USB ports, so connecting the drive to 2 USB ports would provide enough power.

ASUS busts out 7-inch R70 UMPC at CeBIT {Engadget}

How would you change Dell's XPS One? {Engadget}

Jan 25th 2008 7:26PM Lower the base price to $1199 or less.
24" version with 1920x1200 res.
Better mouse and keyboard.
