Canada's industry boss: don't like incoming text charges? Switch carriers {Engadget Mobile}
Aug 14th 2008 1:29PM I believe if the carrier changes the terms of the agreement that you signed for then you have a legal right to cancel if you wish to, as it's a breach of the contract on their part. It might take some convincing them though!
Sony Ericsson K850i gets unboxed {Engadget Mobile}
Oct 16th 2007 3:27PM It's a nice handset, we've had them here in the UK since last week, and working in a phone shop I get to play with them as much as I like! The touch sensitive buttons take a little getting used to but make perfect sense, and the 5 megapixel camera is just what the doctor ordered! Also, the tilt sensor and new media player are worthy additions, and bring the phone in to line with the PSP/PS3 style of media browsing, which is no bad thing in my mind!
Alcatel unveils forgettable Mandarina Duck phone {Engadget Mobile}
Oct 8th 2007 7:47PM Interesting, I work at Carphone Warehouse, and we don't generally sell Alcatel phones, as they tend to be network specific branded and locked handsets. I guess this might be a good seller for Christmas though! Pay as you go I would have thought, I don't think anyone would get these on contract
Nokia's 6301 UMA candybar hitting Europe in Q4 {Engadget Mobile}
Sep 20th 2007 8:02PM 6301 I'd say, it's an updated 6300, after all!
iPods blocked from synching with Linux {Engadget}
Sep 16th 2007 7:03AM I'd disagree with that, it's terrible at organizing music! You need to get it all set up properly, it just doesn't seem to be that clever at working that stuff out.... yet. I'm completely hooked on iTunes now though, I love the gapless track playing (even with mp3s), the high res album artwork, and of course, cover flow! It's a brilliant piece of work, and it's really reached quite a mature stage now. Can't wait to see what they come up with next!
Samsung's BD-UP5000 HD DVD / Blu-ray combo player gets previewed {Engadget}
Sep 16th 2007 6:54AM This is good, I'm happy that we're starting to see a few more combo players. To be frank, I wouldn't even consider buying a Blu-Ray or HDDVD player on its own, it's just far too risky. If it happens that in the end there is no clear winner, then these players will be a necessity. If it happens that there is one clear winner then part of the player goes unused, but it's better than picking the wrong side and ending up with an extremely overpriced paperweight!
Walt Mossberg gives Ubuntu the cold-shoulder {Engadget}
Sep 15th 2007 2:29AM It's tough talk, but I can't disagree with the guy. I've dipped my toe in Linux before, and found that although there's a lot to like, there are also far too many little complications. If I had the time and energy, I could probably work them all out, but isn't that missing the point slightly? An operating system should allow you to use all your hardware and software without complications, to put it simply, it should just work! Linux is so close to that, but unfortunately not quite there yet in my eyes. I'll be trying some ditros soon to see if I can switch over to it, because I really do like Linux in theory and in practice, but if it's not going to work for me, then I really don't have the time for it in my life right now!
Motorola Z10 landing in October? {Engadget}
Sep 13th 2007 6:06PM Also, just because O2 are getting it doesn't mean to say it won't be available elsewhere. I think the UK market seems to be much more open than the US market. You can get most major phones on most major networks, although some are network exclusives (usually just a unique colour variant of an existing phone though really)
Motorola Z10 landing in October? {Engadget}
Sep 13th 2007 5:56PM Looks like a lick of paint on a Z8 to make it a bit more sober looking to me, which I can understand, as black and neon green clearly isn't for everyone! I guess the spec is a little updated too
Vertu's 3G Ascent Ti hits the shops {Engadget Mobile}
Sep 11th 2007 6:24AM I actually spotted that Wikipedia definition later on myself. Thanks though guys, good to know what those things actually are!
