MacHeist Bundle vs MacUpdate Promo {Download Squad}
Apr 22nd 2008 2:52AM I don't get this whole "Mac bundle" phenomenon. I would call myself a fairly typical Mac user, and I have managed without any of these programs. I've even tried a few of them, and for the most part I feel like they're too glizty and "OSX-like" to be useful.
When Mac developers stop making niche products that are more pretty than functional, and start selling them for a reasonable price (does every mildly useful Mac app need to cost $25-30 for a simple function?) then I might consider buying. Until then, I'll stick to free or inexpensive web apps that do what I need for a fraction of the cost.
Microsoft to kill Hotmail Outlook Express support {Download Squad}
Apr 22nd 2008 2:38AM Well, it's all nice that your experience with Exchange has gone well. I know that it can be very handy.
However, your comments seem to miss the point of this post. Most people with free e-mail either don't have access to Exchange servers or use them as personal accounts to keep things separate from their business e-mail. I like Outlook in the office, but I use a Mac at home. And in all honesty, even if I used a PC I would still stick to web-based e-mail, calendars, and task lists for personal items because it's significantly easier to check them from anywhere I happen to be. Including with my phone, because any respectable web app has a mobile version I can easily pull up without the need to keep my personal agenda and communication in a corporate space.
Mac 101: schedule your scripts {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Apr 15th 2008 2:14AM I actually use something like this to do backups of important document folders in between full system backups.
I use an Automator action instead of AppleScript because it's faster for me to make quick changes as necessary. I just set it up to copy specific folders to my external drive at a regular time everyday.
It's a crude solution, but it saves me the time and trouble of doing a full system backup when I know that there are only a handful of files that are being changed daily. (Obviously I haven't moved up to Leopard and Time Machine yet.)

Verizon announces 700MHz LTE plans -- can you wait 3 years? {Engadget Mobile}
Apr 5th 2008 6:50PM Verizon doesn't even take control of the spectrum they just purchased until next year anyway. That basically means they're aiming to have enough network set-up and tested in about a year to starting launching. That seems pretty reasonable.
AT&T says B Block and Aloha spectrum will go to LTE {Engadget Mobile}
Apr 4th 2008 2:58PM The difference is that if there's an under-served market in Montana, anyone can go in and throw some wire in the ground and provide the service on their own.
No one else can do that in my market with cell phones because the major carriers own the wireless spectrum. (And yes, it is theirs and not leased here.) There IS something wrong and unfair when you control and market, and you deliberately provide inferior service to most areas you control.
It's National Chocolate Mousse Day! {Slashfood}
Apr 4th 2008 4:43AM "White chocolate" is not chocolate. Cocoa butter or not, it doesn't deserve to be in the same class as the real thing. Offering it up as such on a day celebrating chocolate mousse, which in its best form simply presents the rich chocolate flavor in less heavy form, is just sad.
"Food" in quotations: Are people going to get sick of Spanish avant-garde cuisine? {Slashfood}
Apr 4th 2008 4:33AM My problem with molecular gastronomy is two-fold: a) I barely consider the results food and b) it leads to the crap we keep seeing on this season of Top Chef with the guy who seems to be obsessed with "infusing" a "fragrant" steam in his dish and topping the plate with plastic wrap to hold it in.
Perhaps I'm just a fan of simplicity or tradition, but I like food that is presented to me in the most basic preparation possible. Don't get me wrong, I love complex and intricate flavors, but when you start throwing in science people just tend to get very showy.
AT&T says B Block and Aloha spectrum will go to LTE {Engadget Mobile}
Apr 4th 2008 4:18AM You know what, LTE will be awesome when it's here, but for the moment I'd just like to see 3G rolled out nationwide first.
People who live in major metro areas forget that some people, especially those locked into AT&T or Sprint contracts, can't get HSDPA or EVDO outside of very large cities. I live in the same town as one of the largest college campuses in the midwest.
I certainly hope no one gets LTE before 2009. It's unfair to leave customers in half the country not one but two generations as they roll out the latest and greatest everywhere else.

Apr 3rd 2008 9:36PM This post implies that deposits with ING Direct and HSBC Direct are not FDIC insured, which is not the case.
And both are divisions of major banking corporations (in the top 10 of Forbes' Global 2000), so it's not like you're throwing your money into a flimsy web start-up.
