BlackBerry 8820 on AT&T next month? {Engadget Mobile}
Aug 17th 2007 4:03AM It won't be hacked. The java vm on the BlackBerry doesn't allow that kind of tinkering.
The carriers carry too much weight and dictate to the manufacturers how the wifi should be implemented - they don't want to lose revenue to free voip so lock users into their own solutions. Users are being shafted by the carriers and Rim have to allow it otherwise the carriers won't push their units. It's a stupid situation given that open wifi will happen eventually on all devices, they can't hold back the tide so it's protecting revenue for the short term only - in the meantime we all get ripped off.
Boy Genius: BlackBerry "lost three years" with Apple iPhone {BBHub}
Jan 11th 2007 12:36PM Christian Bell, fwiw - i've been vocal about the downside to the whole culture of getting info early and leaking details on here before, bg and what he represents has never been beloved by me. my comments aren't some reactionary rant following the iphone news.
Boy Genius: BlackBerry "lost three years" with Apple iPhone {BBHub}
Jan 11th 2007 2:32AM rather than lose three years i'd say the industry just gained five years. things are going to advance much more quickly because of the competition. it's good for everyone and will drive innovation.
Boy Genius: BlackBerry "lost three years" with Apple iPhone {BBHub}
Jan 10th 2007 5:48PM cos 'boy genius's' opinion matters... it's because of sad media whores like him that apple have announced the iphone before passing the device through the fcc, the whole culture of getting info early is damaging to companies, especially rim; and he's the one doing it and damaging the blackberry brand, if people had some integrity they wouldn't give him the exposure he craves.
Why we run those photos of fish, birds, starlets, etc. {BBHub}
Jan 4th 2007 4:07AM it's kinda embarrassing for all blackberry users that you're posting images from the pitiful 1.3mp camera that most mobile users have had already for a few years.
the culturally significant events you mention couldn't have been taken from a pearl cos it can't record video.
what really is news worthy about someone somewhere taking a photo? there is no significance, it just raises the noisesignal ratio of the information here.
the celebrity obsession is crazy too - the only merit i can see in that is some impressionable kids might get greater brand awareness.
the celebrity news and the photos dilute what's other wise a quick and useful resource.
Here's the Most-Read BBHub post of year {BBHub}
Jan 2nd 2007 3:21PM the endless posts about who took what with their pearl cameras are completely pointless. i agree with that. it's pretty embarassing. how on earth that is news worthy when before christmas i emailed about a free winter game i'd made for the pearl: http://meshsystem.net/default.asp?Display=26 - which got ignored... obviously a picture of a goldfish is more interesting.
BlackBerry Wishlist - Dreams Of What BlackBerry 2007 Might Hold {BBHub}
Dec 29th 2006 12:37PM slingbox support would require an application from slingmedia, it's down to them and maybe they don't feel there's a market for a blackberry solution, last i heard there was a c based symbian version but as far as i'm aware they don't have any java based client which could be ported. it'd perform terribly on the current edge based devices anyways, better to wait for post 3g networks.
as mentioned google calendar would require google to sort it, not rim. but looking at the effort they made with google maps maybe it's something that'll happen. google seem to quite like blackberrys.
online banking... nothing to do with rim, several online banking sites still require internet explorer and wont support firefox let alone a limited browser from a mobile device. this is a complex area and tricky to implement on a mobile device for security reasons, it's not just a case of adding better javascript support or whatever, the banks read what browser you use and if it hasn't passed their own internal security checks they'll most likely block it.
html/rich text email - there's nothing stopping a developer writing such an application, it'd invove writing a wysiwyg editor which then builds the html and posts it. a simpler version which just has a context menu to allow adding html tags to emails could be written inside a week.
wifi - the newer models will have wifi and i believe will come with a voip app preinstalled.
video - i'm thinking the only reason this isnt available on the pearl is cost based, they come with a tiny 128mb memory card, video takes up lots of space. unless there is a performance limit with the camera moving data at rates of about 20fps.

BlackBerry Brand Losing Its Loyalty? {BBHub}
Oct 24th 2006 10:49AM this is rubbish, where are the stats to back that up? it's just media lameness, the writer liked the sound of the meme that he thought made it sound like he knew what he was on about.
