Folding Plica concept phone makes our eyes widen {Engadget Mobile}
Aug 4th 2008 9:40AM I'm still wondering why this concept never occurred to anyone... well anyone other than Nintendo (looks like an overgrown DS, right?)
Maybe because of the battery power necessary to drive 2 screens? Well make both of them OLED or even E-ink... Those 2 technologies are actually mature enough now to mass produce.
Sign me up for one with a soft-radio (that's a radio that is encoded in software not hardware, so you can use it with any tech [GSM, WiFi, WiMAX, etc] and any band the antenna will support) Throw in a generous helping of 32gig on-board memory, a micro-sd slot (or 2) and a 8MP camera on-board... then have it run Android!
Wonder-phone powers, Activate!!
Los Angeles Traffic Cam brings live gridlocks to your cellphone {Engadget Mobile}
Jun 25th 2008 9:56AM That's strange though how Cal-Trans, or LA Metro (which runs buses, trains and subways as well as the LA freeway ITS system) never had a real mobile solution until now.
I grew up in the land of the SigAlert but live in Atlanta now where we're getting our first taste of ramp meters and such.
But we've had a mobile version of the Georgia Navigator site for years here where you can go and view not only cameras, but also see the message boards over the freeways and different traffic incidents in text form. you can also personalize it to your commute habits. http://myganav.com/www/pda/
There are even RSS feeds now that I have plugged into RSS Hub on my TYTN2 where I can just see whats going on with I75 before I leave work.
Come on CalTrans, get with it!!
Helio's Ocean 2 exposed! {Engadget Mobile}
May 28th 2008 1:05PM @ PEZ:
Same thing that's in the original Ocean? Huh? I have an ocean, and last time I checked, I couldn't look at Flash SWFs and FLVs in the browser, it only has 256MB of internal memory, and the camera is 2MP.
Plus I think it won't be a bad thing to assume that this one will be a little more "open" to tweaking than the Ocean 1, since there are places like Heliocity.net and others that helped get that one "fixed"--without that hacker community, you wouldln't have the legit copy of Opera Mini, or free YouTube there, right?
Lastly, don't forget the true competition of the OZ2--the 3G iPhone coming out in a few weeks. This is supposed to be an alternative somewhat to that, i'm sure.
Dear Palm: It's time for an intervention {Engadget}
Aug 21st 2007 11:41PM *sigh*
Palm what happened. You're like a washed-up quarterback. Early in your career, you were so lean, and inventive. Now you struggle just to make the team roster every year. Even my treo 700wx which is windows based, seems dated compared to some of the newer HTC devices, Symbian devices, and let's not go into the iphone. If they release a version 2 of the iphone that corrects the small number of mistakes (like no video cam, no 3G, etc) then game over palm.
Take a field trip to Japan, and Korea and China. take a look at how they're merging Linux into even dumbphones. Then look at how they manage to pack features into them, and still be svelte and stylish.
I owned the Treo 300, 600, 650, 700p and 700wx. The next company to put GPS, wifi, a decent camera, decent web apps, exchange, and really good phone into a device gets my money.
Take a look at this laundry list Palm, and get it together, or consider your jersey retired, and in the hall-of-fame.
