iPhone facing potential trademark issues in China? {Engadget Mobile}
Jul 3rd 2009 5:42AM That may be their only choice- to do no more than have their repair centers and stores offer support to people with iPhones with any proof of purchase instead of selling them directly if this company (they make really crappy stuff, don't buy, srsly) sues or something. On the plus side, this leaves Sharp as the one flagship maker for Unicom, and more Japanese phones for China is something I'll wholeheartedly support.

Jul 2nd 2009 5:38AM And that's when they say "Go get your components somewhere else" or supply "special" parts.
Taiwan 'orders' Dell to honor $15 monitor mishap (updated) {Engadget}
Jul 2nd 2009 5:37AM Except that, as someone said above, US law is not Taiwanese law, and that apparently, according to Taiwanese law, clicking "order" makes it binding. In that respect (and others- if Congress was like its Taiwanese counterpart C-Span would have much higher ratings) the US could stand to learn from Taiwan.

Jul 2nd 2009 5:03AM If it can be moved around to help negate roaming charges it would probably be worth the money.
China Mobile says 3G isn't winning hearts and minds yet {Engadget Mobile}
Jul 1st 2009 9:59AM Oh no, they put everything into marketing TD, believe me. It's just that the phone selection is crappy and most people already have UMTS-capable phones, making it cheaper to move to China Unicom and their HSPA service (I'm doing this).

Jul 1st 2009 9:57AM Um, re-enabling it is a trivial matter, and they've found loopholes to get around that.

Jul 1st 2009 9:55AM And since when has Verizon ever released a phone with "roaming overseas GSM" that's not locked to their Verizon-Vodafone SIM?
Best Buy-sponsored survey shows that Americans want smartphones even though they don't understand them {Engadget}
Jul 1st 2009 9:53AM Once upon a time I thought I wanted a smartphone. Then I got a Sharp 902. That day I discovered that what I actually wanted was a capable multimedia phone without the clunky general-purpose OS that went with it. And boy, do the Japanese make these in spades. The only reason I use an iPhone for the time being is because I won one in a raffle- I'd never pay for one.

Jun 29th 2009 10:30PM It's definitely the whole "proprietary" thing. The only reason UMTS and EVDO aren't doing better is because UMTS has hella expensive price plans and EVDO doesn't have any nice phones here (see, would-be UMTS users solve this problem by importing Japanese phones; EVDO users can't do this without losing data)

Jun 29th 2009 2:06PM What do the numbers to the left and right of "Telenor" mean? One. I'm guessing, is signal strength, but the other?
