Author Nick Hornby not feeling the fever pitch over e-books {Engadget}

Author Nick Hornby not feeling the fever pitch over e-books {Engadget}

Jul 6th 2008 2:42PM About 15 years ago I published what became a well known reference encyclopedia in a highly specialized field. The retail price was $55. Several years after it went out of print, used copies were going for $300 and many libraries reported their own copies missing. The last copy I saw on abeDOT com went for $800.

The subject is too specialized for a regular hard copy print run, so I made an eBook version (pdf), fully printable, for $9.95. I thought this would be a huge success given the fact that pdf documents can be read on all computers and even pda phones, not to mention the convenience of electronic searches, etc.

After one year on the market I can count the buyers on my fingers... I recently visited the site of a well known publisher where they mentioned abandoning eBooks because they only represented 0.5% of their sales.
It will be a loooong time before eBooks become popular.

May 22nd 2008 10:06PM I've been using WM 5 and 6 for the past couple of years. I have a cheap data plan and the GSM network around my neck of the woods might as well be non existent, so regrettably, the iPhone is not an option. WM sucks big time. Even at 6.1 it's still a total POS in terms of user interface and incredibly flaky. Not long after the last holiday season a consumer publication mentioned that PDA phones were the most returned Xmas gifts as they were judged too complicated to use. Small wonder. Microsoft says you can do a lot more with Windows Mobile. Indeed. A lot more soft resetting, hard resetting, swearing, cursing... Just try to watch Youtube on WM. This is just the inconvenient kind of privacy where you can't find the number to a friend after your phone battery is dead."

Dummy. If your phone battery is dead how are you gonna call?
