AT&T's Ralph de la Vega says iPhone tethering coming "soon" {Engadget}

Nov 6th 2008 6:16PM The reason they differentiate unlimited data on a cell phone and unlimited data on a laptop is because of average use and types of use.

Most people will use a lot more bandwith when on a laptop with a full sized browsing experience that doesn't crash every few pages and allows copy and paste for hopping between websites or just working in general.

You also can't play flash games, MMOs, or ya know, torrent movies on your iPhone but you can on your laptop, and that is honestly what they are afraid of.

I'm not certain whether I would give up the comfort of "unlimited" internet on my iPhone for free tethering with a cap'd total data plan, unless it was a pretty crazy cap (which it wouldn't be). Of course I'm not saying they are even considering offering a plan like that, but it could be a nice option to have the flexibility.

More than likely it'll be another $15 a month to add laptop connect to the iPhone won't it?

iPhone gets tweaked Safari in firmware 2.2 {Engadget}

Sep 28th 2008 10:47PM Considering the phone has the option already built in, to only grab a certain quantity of mail at a time (defaulted to 50), I think it's safe to presume that the size of the mailbox should have no effect on the performance of the device, especially considering that it doesn't grab the entire box when using imap.

But even ignoring that, there is something called crashing gracefully, which is sure as hell isn't. There should be an error message, it should still let me get into settings to delete the troubled account, not force me to WIPE THE PHONE in order to expunge the email account the iPhone just isn't man enough to handle.

I'm really annoyed. I knew this thing was only a year out of the box, but it doesn't even do what it promised to do.

iPhone gets tweaked Safari in firmware 2.2 {Engadget}

Sep 28th 2008 12:04AM Screw copy and paste, how about they get mail working so it doesn't crash if you've got an imap account with a few thousand e-mails. Or maybe get it so background fetching of e-mails works consistently again.

I'm all for having the basic minimal features that define it as a smartphone actually working before going and requesting some of that special sauce everything else has had for awhile now.

SATA Revision 3.0 specification to double transfer speeds to 6Gbps {Engadget}

Aug 19th 2008 11:32AM From what I understand SATA only allows 1 device per channel, so RAID setups don't saturate the SATA bus, they work against the controller's bus (PCI-EX or PCI).

And Engadget posted this article a couple days about a company already working on plans for a 600MB/s SSD.

So those kinds of delicious speeds are coming sooner or later.

With that said, as mentioned above, I'm disappointed that it's only 20% faster than USB3. I guess it doesn't matter when nothing really uses that much bandwidth yet, but it just doesn't feel very future proof.

Anyone know what kind of bandwidth a PCI-EX x1 lane has (I assume a x4 has 4 times that and so on)??

120GB Zune slips past the FCC {Engadget}

Aug 18th 2008 4:45PM They are all standardized around one screen res. The 4, 8, 30 and 80 all have the same screen rez of 320x240 I believe.

Hence I HIGHLY doubt they'll be changing the res.

120GB Zune slips past the FCC {Engadget}

Aug 18th 2008 4:20PM I believe it's been rumored for months now that there was not going to be a hardware change this year.

I figure we're getting a hard-drive upgrade and they're bringing the software to the mac.

That's my bet for this year.
I was kinda hoping it would be 160GB over 120GB though :/

New solar cell efficiency record (barely) achieved at 40.8% {Engadget}

Aug 15th 2008 12:06PM How exactly does the pricing of these things work? I assume it's by square foot. Any idea what the currently on market panels cost and their efficiencies vs this? I was thinking about the whole solar roof thing, but 10 - 15 years to break even seems like a waste of money at this point. I'm really looking forward to these advances in solar technology to remove some of the burden of high tech living.
