iPhone firmware 2.0 is live (plus hands-on) {Engadget}

Jul 10th 2008 11:06AM I had to download the update to my desktop so it wouldn't auto decompress the Zip file. I than did the "option" check-update combo and than it loaded up and I have downloaded "Twittelator," Apple's "Remote," and am downloading Poker right now.

Harley-Davidson sees Sportster sales rise on high gas prices {Autoblog Green}

Jun 30th 2008 10:39AM Actually you missed the real story - it's the Buell Blast - it gets 70 mpg in the city and costs $4600. They are selling like hot cakes. Other popular bikes are the Kawasaki EX-500 Ninja, the BMW GS650, and the list goes on. I drove the scooters from Vespa and Piaggio and really liked them, but one does look a little geeky on them and they are more expensive than comparable motorcycles, but aren't as safe on the freeway due to the small diameter of their tires.

High gas prices to keep 10 million cars off the roads {Autoblog Green}

Jun 30th 2008 10:05AM It is a complete non-sequitur to compare the US to the UK or Europe. In England mass transit is and has been widely available. The nearest bus stop to me is 2 miles away. It actually costs more than the driving my car, even at $4.00 per gallon.

So to make snide remarks about US infrastructure and Americans driving big cars, etc... people need to understand the simple fact that this nation is not prepared for this and our citizens will do what it takes to get gas prices back down to a much lower level, but they are cognizant that we need to free ourselves of reliance on foreign oil AND using technologies that either use domestic alternatives or possibly pure electric/hydrogen.

So, if you feel great that gas prices are taking vehicles off the road, remember the millions of rural and poorer Americans who will lose their jobs and not be able to support their families before you bask in environmental glee. (That's you @armmat)

U.S. mayors call for oil sands boycott {Autoblog Green}

Jun 30th 2008 9:54AM I normally just quietly read these articles, but these mayors are criminals and proverbial enemies of the state and people. I would gladly sacrifice ducks and lakes if it means we take the money out of the pockets of terrorists while we develop responsible alternative technologies.

The good news is that 70% of Americans support drilling on the OCS, and about 50% support drilling in ANWR. I imagine they won't tolerate such lunacy from the green fringe.

Top Gear USA hosts announced! {Autoblog}

Jun 16th 2008 2:51PM Tanner Foust - great selection. Not sure about the other two. It doesn't matter. The real question is whether NBC will put the kind of cinematic quality into the show as the BBC does in the UK? Think about how gorgeous shots are on "Top Gear" and ask yourself if the network who brought us "Night Rider" is capable. I doubt it, but maybe they'll pull it off. If not, there's always BBC American for Top Gear.

Mars Phoenix lander has near-perfect landing, says "it's really cold out here" {Engadget}

May 26th 2008 11:35AM This mission is impressive, but I cannot help but wonder if the $430 million would have been better invested in developing cellulosic ethanol. Whether or not we know there is water on Mars seems pretty insignificant.

This is probably not a popular thought, but seriously, is it in our national best interests to throw money at space exploration (not to be confused with new satellites etc...) when our economy is crumbling?

Official: HBO arrives on iTunes, standard pricing be damned {Engadget}

May 13th 2008 1:58AM I don't really care about the price. $1.99 or $2.99, whatever. What beguiles me is why, and this is not limited to HBO, iTunes only offers a sliver of the content available on the various networks. I went through most of the networks and very few had more than 1 page of shows. We know they have much more to offer.

See if Apple TV is going to take off, it's got to have an overwhelming library. Not a sampler.

Where's "Band of Brothers" and the other great programs of HBO? Or where is "Top Gear" for BBC America? Well, you get the idea.

The kids out there will still have their $.99 and $1.99 standard fare, but I expect to pay a premium for premium programming. Just because iTunes is selling more than Wal-Mart doesn't mean it has to pick up the crappy habits of Wal-Mart's purchasing agents going after rubbish just to offer something cheap.

Kensington unveils Battery Pack and Charger for iPhone / iPod {Engadget}

May 5th 2008 5:44PM That'll work for my iPhone, but I really need this for my MacBook Air.

UAW strikes GM Malibu plant {Autoblog}

May 5th 2008 2:41PM I'll ignore the rudeness of your comment. The UAW is deeply political and there is no doubt they would potentially consult with liberals prior to doing this. Since we're not in a recession, and job losses were 60,000 less than expected for April, I'd say it's possible. That doesn't mean it has happened, but the UAW doesn't want a Republican president and one way to help that along is to tube the economy. For every GM worker that goes on strike about 10 related non-GM workers are either laid off or lose their jobs.

Clearly the strikes impacting SUV production do nothing because there's no reason to build SUVs that won't sell. However, the Malibu (while I'd never buy one due to personal taste) is racking up both sales and awards.

I maybe a touch cynical, but you're apparently drowning in Kool-Aid.

We need each and every worker producing the best product from the US as is humanly possibly. Walking out of that factory is walking out on the rest of us. "What's good for GM is good for America." That axiom still holds true today. A frivolous "local" strike where the union isn't shouting out the atrocities imposed on the workers should be criminal.
