Those of you dying to get your QWERTY on with RIM's hot new Blackberry Bold can start marking your calendars and stashing cash under the cushions -- release dates and pricing info have hit the tubes this morning. As expected, AT&T will get the Bold first in July for $300, while Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile customers will have to wait until September. Oddly, T-Mo subs will have to cough up an extra $50, which seems a little unfair. Of course, these aren't official dates and prices, so things are likely to change, but we'd say everything seems in the ballpark, wouldn't you?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

AT&T's 3G comes out on top in speed tests, will only get faster in 2009

Filed under: ATT, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, GSM, EV-DO, HSDPA, Studies, CDMA, Misc, HSUPA, LTE

The folks over at Computerworld just ran the current 3G providers in America through their paces, only to discover that AT&T came out on top in almost every category. Well, it appears the monolithic telco plans to keep its edge (er...) on the competition -- by upping its HSPA service to a whopping 20Mbps come 2009. Our main man Ralph de la Vega said that the process wouldn't require a major overhaul to the provider's infrastructure, and that they're already working on punching up the current 3.6Mbps speeds to 7.2Mbps "in the labs." Apparently, this won't stall plans for forthcoming 4G / 700MHz / LTE service from the company -- it'll just be icing on the cake.

Read - Which 3G network is the best?
Read - AT&T plans 20-megabit 3G by 2009

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

New players team up with LiMo Foundation

Filed under: Software, Sagem, Verizon Wireless, Linux
Following a new round of partnership announcements back in February, LiMo Foundation today added 8 new members, bringing the grand total to 40 -- and perhaps most notably, Verizon Wireless becomes the first American carrier to team up with the group and the Foundation's final board member (in other words, they seem to be taking this initiative pretty seriously). Other new players include South Korea's SK Telecom, France's SFR, Sagem, chipmaker Infineon, and Mozilla, suggesting that there'll be plenty of mobile Firefox support for LiMo's nascent platform. LiMo represents the largest Linux-based threat to Android's plans for world domination, having announced its initiative some time before Google while collecting a veritable who's-who of world players from NTT DoCoMo to manufacturers like LG and Motorola -- and with the depth of Verizon's commitment to this, evident by its nabbing of an actual board seat, we wouldn't be surprised to see LiMo-based products actually go beyond its Any Apps, Any Device initiative and get real on the carrier's official lineup.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Verizon rumored ready to get down with LiMo Foundation

Filed under: Software, Verizon Wireless, Linux
The latest word on the street suggests that Verizon is getting ready to announce that it's throwing its formidable weight behind the LiMo Foundation, that "other" mobile Linux group that's attracted some serious muscle behind founding member NTT DoCoMo. With Verizon's Any Apps, Any Device initiative on tap for this year, a wide-open platform like LiMo makes perfect sense -- and as folks are pointing out, the move wouldn't preclude the carrier from jumping on the Android bandwagon just the same once the hardware and software have ripened enough for customer consumption. If this all goes down, it'd mark the very first American carrier to sign on with LiMo -- and since Verizon's European spouse, Vodafone, is already on board, the synergy's pretty obvious. What's more, media outlets (ours included) have gotten word that LiMo will be announcing several new partners in the morning, including a "major US wireless service provider." Wonder who that could be?

[Via mocoNews]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

BlackBerry touchscreen phone to be dubbed 'Thunder'

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Verizon Wireless, Vodafone, EV-DO

The industrious Boy Genius has apparently unearthed more juicy tidbits about that rumored BlackBerry touchscreen device. Word from BG is that the new iPhone-ish handset is now internally dubbed the "Thunder," and will come to Verizon and Vodafone as an exclusive device. The phone will reportedly have four physical keys (send, end, menu, and back), sport a hybrid CDMA EV-DO Rev. C / GSM HSPA radio, and could come equipped with a 4G LTE component. Outside Waterloo's labs, the device could be known as the BlackBerry 9500 -- though it's possible that designation could change. BGR has included a self-made mockup (above) of what the device may look like, but as of now, no one has laid eyes on this mythical creature.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Motorola's new V750 and W755 for Verizon in all their glory

Filed under: Handsets, Features, Motorola, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

Two of Motorola's latest Verizon wares continue their relentless march toward launch day (or "L-day" as we like to call it when we're trying to sound extra important and cryptic), the V750 and W755 flips. We don't have a date on the V750 yet -- the slightly sportier-looking of the two in silver with red and mesh black trim -- but we now hear that the W755 is currently tracking for a May 23 debut. No word on pricing there, but with the meager feature set, we imagine it'll be pretty easy on the wallet. In the meantime, though, enjoy some photography. Come on, you know you want to.

Gallery: Motorola's new V750 and W755 for Verizon in all their glory

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

New LG slider in Verizon ad? The darndest things can happen when you don't have your marketing and product development groups on exactly the same page. Case in point: this ad, astutely observed by a reader and sent in. It clearly depicts a phone that doesn't exist -- at least not officially. The closest analog we can draw to it would be Alltel's LG Glimmer, though it doesn't share the Glimmer's chin below the keypad. Our guess, honestly, is that some Photoshop wiz slapped an oversized VZ Navigator screen shot on a Venus, added a stupendously huge Verizon logo below it just for effect, and called it a day. Anyone else want to chime in on this?

[Thanks, Zachary D.]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Samsung Glyde review roundup

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

The Samsung Glyde was one of the most hyped phones on an American carrier in recent memory leading up to its launch, and there's one small problem with that: it's hard to live up to the fanfare, no matter how good (or bad) the phone might be. A common early complaint coming out of the gate seems to be the lack of support for Verizon's MediaFLO-based VCAST TV service, a service that the Glyde's main competition, the Voyager, supports. The UI's also getting panned for being a little more confusing that it needs to be; compounding matters is the fact that Phone Scoop describes it as a "push UI" on account of a fiddly touchscreen. For what it's worth, it seems that the keyboard is at least quite good -- so if you can put up with the negatives, the Glyde might still have a place in your pocket. Otherwise, the Voyager's still looking awfully good, isn't it?

Read - LAPTOP Magazine (2.5 / 5 stars, "...limited by a poor UI and unreliable performance")
Read - Phone Scoop ("The Glyde pairs a few of the best things from the physical and touch worlds")
Read - PHONE Magazine ("The Verizon Glyde isn't a bad cellphone, but it's outshone by its rivals")

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

How would you change RIM's BlackBerry Curve 8330?

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Alltel, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

Well, what do you know? This week's How Would You Change question hits home in the Mobile world, so we figured we'd give you all a fair shot at chiming in. For those who've coughed up the requisite coin to procure a BlackBerry Curve 8330 on one of our nation's CDMA carriers, how on Earth is it treating you? Found any annoyances you'd like to see changed? If so, head on over to Engadget Classic and drop your comments there.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Motorola's Q9c finally appears for Verizon

Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, Verizon Wireless, Windows Mobile, EV-DO

Just like we suspected, after a short delay, the succulent and delightful Motorola Q9c is now available from Verizon. Bonus shot -- instead of the $249.99 price tag we expected it to sport, it's actually bumped down to $199.99 with a two-year contract and online discount. Google's been making all kinds of a fuss lately over what it claims are Verizon's plans to subvert the intent of the 700MHz open-access rules, but it looks like the carrier isn't interested in fighting it out (for once). Verizon issued a statement today saying that it "understood the FCC's rules," and that "of course we'll abide by those rules." Of course, that doesn't really mean anything until they build out the network and we see how they actually implement open-access -- which will take years -- but once again, it seems like Google is really the one in control of the 700MHz spectrum, even though it didn't win. One of the worst-kept secrets in Verizon's stable is finally getting official today; that's right, ladies and gentlemen, meet the Glyde from Samsung. Wearing CDMA guts underneath its F700 clothing, the fashion-friendly QWERTY slider offers a 2 megapixel cam with flash and autofocus, GPS, the full range of Bluetooth profiles, microSD slot, and a true HTML browser. Unlike its crosstown competition -- the LG Voyager -- the Glyde doesn't offer support for Verizon's VCAST TV service, but we imagine most folks will consider that a minor (read: nonexistent) inconvenience. Look for the phone to start circulating into retail channels this week for a princely $249.99 on contract after $50 rebate.

Gallery: Verizon launches the Samsung Glyde

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Qwest follows up with details on Verizon partnership

Filed under: Sprint, Qwest, Verizon Wireless
After yesterday's revealing of a sweeping new partnership with Verizon, Qwest took an opportunity during its earnings call today to go into detail on exactly what the deal means. The Baby Bell confirmed that Qwest branding will completely go away -- Verizon devices sold will be Verizon through and through, with no hint of rebranded MVNO action like the old setup with Sprint (which, in some cases, had meant Qwest exclusives like the Fusion). They also say that they're looking forward to implementing Verizon's next-gen (read: LTE) network just as soon as it's available, but really, here's our question: just what would Qwest be implementing, anyway? For all practical purposes, the company's doing nothing more than becoming a glorified authorized Verizon reseller; big wigs on the call said that the terms of the deal are "much, much better" than the old one with Sprint, and considering that they won't actually have to go through the daily grind of running an MVNO, it's no wonder. It's still unclear how Sprint customers are going to be transitioned, but we imagine Sprint proper would be happy to take 'em off Qwest's hands if it came down to it.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

BlackBerry Curve now available on Verizon

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Verizon Wireless

Verizon said we'd be getting the BlackBerry Curve 8330 in May, and it looks like the company is right on schedule: RIM's latest is now available with a two-year contract for $219 and a $50 rebate. We already got a somewhat vague peek at the 3G-less Blackberry 9000, but it looks like there are actually two upcoming models of RIM's new hotness on the board -- the EDGE version we know about, codenamed Niagara, and an EV-DO edition codenamed Javelin, slated for Verizon. Boy Genius managed to unearth quite a bit more information on these two, and unsurprisingly, they're basically the same as the 9000 we've already seen. Both have a 480 x 320 half-VGA screen, GPS functionality and 3.2 megapixel camera, but only the EDGE-based Niagara gets Wi-Fi. Of course, there aren't any ship dates or prices in the offing yet, but hopefully we'll know more soon.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

Qwest makes it official: Sprint out, Verizon in

Filed under: Sprint, Qwest, Verizon Wireless
It looks like the price was right, because that possible deal mentioned by Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg a while back to supplant Sprint as Qwest's wireless provider of choice has now materialized in the form of a gargantuan five-year deal. From what little has been said so far, it seems that the company might be abandoning the MVNO model it currently uses with Sprint and will simply be marketing Verizon Wireless devices through its website, telesales, and in-store channels, giving customers the option of being billed directly by Big Red (how very kind of them!) or having the charges bundled in with the remainder of their service. Also remaining to be seen is how the transition of Qwest's existing Sprint-based customers -- some 800,000 of them -- would be transitioned, if at all. More details are expected to emerge during its earnings call on Tuesday, and we'd imagine current Qwest wireless customers are on the edges of their seats.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Where's Verizon's Motorola Q9c? Remember that three-pack of phones Verizon promised for April delivery a while back? Two of them have materialized as promised, but the third -- the Motorola Q9c -- is missing in action. The popular rumor seems to be that they've pushed the launch date out just a smidge to May 15, though with the Q9m already in the lineup, we suspect this one won't be causing as much panic than if either the enV(2) or XV6900 had slipped. Or will it?

[Via Everything Q]

Update: We've gotten some documentation suggesting that the Q9c will actually launch in Verizon's B2B, web, and telesales channels on May 9 right alongside the Curve and Glyde, making for a quite a blockbuster day. Turns out the Glyde's gonna have to share the spotlight a bit when it launches early next month. The Curve 8330 has been confirmed by our sources for a May 9 release through Verizon's B2B, web, and telesales channels, followed by a May 12 launch in "all channels" (which we assume means you'll be able to walk into any old store and grab one). It'll go for $319.99 before $50 rebate on a two-year contract, ranging all the way up to $439.99 if you have no interest in signing your name on the dotted line. 'Course, Sprint told us point-blank that it'd be launching the Curve in April and that didn't exactly pan out, so we recommend exercising some restraint here until your jaded heart actually spies it on Verizon's site -- or better yet, on a store shelf.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Verizon follows AT&T on the black ink trail

It looks like it's a surprisingly good time to be a behemoth US carrier, with both AT&T and Verizon reporting some pretty aggressive profits in the first quarter of 2008 in the face of a flagging economy. Many of Verizon's results closely mirror AT&T's actually, with data revenue absolutely destroying the numbers from a year ago -- up 48.9 percent year over year, in Big Red's case. As we can see from Verizon's own documentation here, they're tooting their horn against their arch-nemesis with more net adds, a slightly better ARPU, lower churn, and lower cost per customer, with service revenue and total subs (of course) being AT&T's big wins. Whether the momentum can be kept up through a challenging '08 remains to be seen, but it's a solid start for the nation's number two. Hit the gallery below for a big shot of Verizon's message to employees regarding the results.

[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

Gallery: Verizon follows AT&T on the black ink trail

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Verizon to launch Samsung Glyde on May 9

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

We've learned from a trusted source that one of the jewels in Verizon's summer 2008 crown, the Samsung Glyde, will finally freaking launch on May 9. Despite a wealth of both in-the-wild and press quality photography of the phone over the past few weeks, it's been less and less clear when exactly Verizon was planning on actually offering it, so we're glad to finally have a date -- particularly considering that it's less than two weeks away. That'll give the Glyde a few comfortable weeks atop the heap ahead of the Dare's arrival, so enjoy it while you can, Samsung.

Update: It'll be $299.99 on a two-year plan before rebate, $369.99 on a one-year, and $419.99 with no strings attached.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

LG enV(2) graces Verizon tomorrow

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

Get those textin' thumbs ready, peeps, because your latest weapon of choice is just about ready for you. LG's enV(2)-- a phone that we'd argue takes attractive design far more seriously than its predecessor -- will be available in exchange for a reasonable sum of cash (or cash equivalent) tomorrow, April 30, in Verizon stores across the land. Far more than a mere text machine, the enV(2) features a 2 megapixel camera, microSD slot, GPS, and a big ol' 2.4-inch display when the clam is opened. The only question left, really, is black or maroon?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Mug shots of Verizon's Nokia 6205

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Verizon Wireless, CDMA

What's blue, silver, and boring all over? If you guessed the Nokia 6205, well, you clearly knew something about the phone you were holding back to us -- but nonetheless, go ahead and give yourself a gold star and a pat on the back for a job well done. The low-end flip for Verizon, which we'd mentioned not long ago, has finally been exposed in all its entry-level glory; don't get us wrong, we're delighted that Espoo seems to be back in the thick of the CDMA hunt, but we think we're going to hold out for something just a little more visually stimulating than this. <strike>The lack of EV-DO isn't helping its case either, though</strike> we suppose the external controls and camera flash are welcome additions for the folks who actually hold out until its alleged mid-June release.

Update: Peep that little "EV" signal strength indicator up there? Looks like there might be a 3G radio hiding in this one, after all. If so, kudos, Nokia! phoneArena appears to have scored information on exactly when Verizon will be (or would like to be, anyway) releasing three new models from LG, all of which should be attracting some serious attention in their own right. Headlining the group is the VX9700 "Dare" -- Verizon's Prada-alike, if you recall -- which is allegedly now being targeted for a July 4 online release and an in-store launch shortly thereafter (we'd say those dates put it at risk of cannibalization from the Glyde, but the Dare'll win the photography battle with a 3.2 megapixel sensor versus the Glyde's measly 2). Next up, the trick VX8610 with the internal Bluetooth headset has apparently been christened "Decoy" and is tracking for May 30 online and June 9 in store. Finally, the VX8650 Chocolate Flip gets ready to mercilessly slaughter its VX8600 predecessor come June 24 on your trusty web browser with brick-and-mortar locations getting theirs in July. Naturally, launch dates tend to have the solidity of Jello, so don't be dropping your life savings on any wagers here with your shady friends. Not yet, anyway.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Fair Credit Reporting Act cited in Verizon, Alltel suits

We've all had situations where our printed receipts have been just a little too wordy for comfort, disclosing details about our address or credit card (or worse, both) that a nefarious individual would kill to score. The 2003 Fair Credit Reporting Act was supposed to put a serious cork in that business by threatening offenders with a $1,000-per incident fine for willfully printing out secret stuff beyond December 2006; Verizon and Alltel are being accused of ignoring that little clause of the FCRA, though, with class action suits du jour recently filed in Pennsylvania and Georgia respectively. For its part, Alltel says it's in the clear because it hasn't been printing both the credit card number and the expiration date on its receipts, and furthermore, the plaintiffs haven't proven that they've had their identities stolen as a result of its practices. Verizon has responded with a shorter, snippier comment, simply saying that it "did not commit any wrongful act" against the accusers. Seriously though, what's so hard about just not printing that stuff?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

New Casio G'zOne "Boulder" hits FCC, likely for Verizon's new PTT

Filed under: Handsets, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA, Casio

The FCC has mercifully approved a new rugged G'zOne model from Casio named "Boulder," bearing a dual-band CDMA radio with EV-DO. If we had to wager a guess, we'd have to say the flip is likely the c711 we heard about a few days back, meaning that it'll be one of the very first devices to support Verizon's new EV-DO Rev. A-based push-to-talk service -- which as we learned, is most definitely not QChat. Little else is known about the device from the FCC filing, but we imagine we'll be hearing about it straight from Big Red in the not-too-distant future.

[Via Phone Scoop]

<a href=https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=516907&fcc_id='TYKNX9230'>Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Verizon's next-gen PTT is not QChat

Sprint contacted us today to let us know that it owns the exclusive North American rights to Qualcomm's QChat PTT technology, which raised a very interesting question: what the heck is Verizon using, then? PhoneNews is suggesting that Big Red's actually using an upgraded version of BREWChat, Qualcomm's old-skool PTT system that had originally been developed for and deployed on 1x networks. If true, that'd be a big ol' scoop of irony, considering that BREWChat had been billed all along as a precursor to QChat that would offer seamless upgrades to the newer system -- but since Sprint scored exclusivity on it, it's possible that Qualcomm is doing everything it can to skirt the issue and score some extra cash by hooking up BREWChat with some of its newer technology's goodies. We'll update this one as we know more.

[Via phoneArena]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Motorola's W755 for Verizon is like a breath of fresh (or stale) air

Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

Remember that spellbinding page-turner of a user guide for Motorola's W755 that we brought you a while back? Of course you do -- how could anyone forget? The anticipation of a new model in Moto's W line of low- to midrange handsets is always nearly too much to bear for us, as we're sure it is for you. Anyway, enough with the ribbing and onto business: press shots of the Verizon-bound flip have surfaced, showing that the phone will be available in at least two shades, black and purple. With a 1.3 megapixel camera on board it's not about to set any records or turn any heads, but the external touch-sensitive music controls are a bonus -- and hey, we guess a choice of colors is always nice. Still no word on a release here, so we hope these shots will hold you over in the meanwhiles.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Best Buy to offer Samsung Glyde free on contract?

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Verizon Wireless

It seems like a healthy contingent of folks are getting amped for the imminent release of Glyde on Verizon, but we'd always assumed that those folks would be paying a buck or two for the privilege of sporting Samsung's latest and greatest in their pockets on day one. Well, turns out that may not be the case: we've been sent a tip showing what appears to be a screen shot out of Best Buy's system, indicating that it'll be free with any rate plan activation or upgrade. Skepticism is always in order with these sorts of things because even if the screen shot is legit, it's entirely plausible that Best Buy just has it's signals crossed as it preps for launch -- but we can always hope, can't we?

[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Verizon's BlackBerry Curve 8330 in pictures

Filed under: Handsets, Features, RIM, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

While we twiddle our thumbs for these CDMA Curves to finally hit an American carrier or three, we thought we'd post some imagery for everyone to enjoy. Actually, nix "everyone" -- only the diehard BlackBerry addicts are going to get into this. Don't look over your shoulder, buddy, you know who you are. Yeah, you. We're still trying to piece together the Verizon Hub mystery -- namely whether it'll be available outside the realm of Verizon's FiOS broadband customer base -- but either way, we have some evidence here that it'll play nice with the Verizon Wireless handset of your choice. The device was designed from the start to be the be-all, end-all wireline home base (hence the name), so it really comes as no surprise that there'd be some interaction with mobiles for those rare occasions when you simply must leave your home. What you see here are a couple of diagrams (just follow the arrows!) involving the transfer of information to and from Verizon Wireless-branded cellphones; in the first, an address is looked up using the Hub's yellow pages facility, located on a map, then transferred to an LG VX9400. In the second, a lovely photograph from a beach (seriously, what are we doing in front of a computer right now?) is snapped and transferred to a Hub, where it's displayed in real time. Fun stuff -- let's hope owners of any old broadband connection are going to be able to partake.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Shortage of Samsung Glyde eye candy: solved

Filed under: Handsets, Features, Samsung, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

As far as we're concerned, right up until the Glyde is released, there's simply no such thing as "too many Glyde shots." Like the phone or hate it, are we at least all in agreement there? The latest round brings us a handful of photos of a dummy model, presumably destined for a Verizon or authorized dealer store somewhere within the US of A. Our initial impression is that it's just a tad thicker than we'd like, but we owe it to ourselves (and Verizon, for that matter) to hold off on panning the bulge until we feel it for ourselves. Click on, people!

Gallery: Shortage of Samsung Glyde eye candy: solved

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Details emerge on Verizon's PTT entrants from Motorola and Casio

Filed under: Features, Motorola, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA, Casio

Remember how we said Verizon was prepping a next-gen PTT launch right behind Sprint? It's still on, and we're starting to get a trickle of intel on at least two devices that'll spearhead the festivities. The first is going to be -- yep, you guess it -- a Motorola, the V750 flip to be exact. The other is going to be the next episode in Casio's G'zOne series of niche-but-popular outdoorsy handsets, which will be known as the c711. Both feature EV-DO (including tethering capability), GPS, Bluetooth, cameras, media capability, and a fat ton of onboard memory, while the G'zOne adds a compass and "rugged styling," which we think is code for "it's not as tough as it looks." We're not sure whether these are still on track for a May launch, but that V750 we saw sure looked ready for prime time, didn't it?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Verizon's Palm Centro in the flesh!

Filed under: Handsets, Features, Palm, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

It's not often that a single handset unites all four US national carriers (assuming the T-Mobile thing ends up going down), so we have to give Palm some credit here -- it's an honorable feat. And with the Centro being a surprise break-out success for Palm (a much needed one, may we add), there's no reason to think they won't be able to push a few units on Verizon, too. The Delaware federal court filing says that Big Red "repeatedly attempted to resolve this dispute short of litigation," but hey, every so often these megacorporations run into a dispute that only the gavel can solve -- particularly when it involves eight figures worth of cold, hard cash. Sprint seems almost flippant about the whole thing, saying that the lawsuit doesn't surprise them since Verizon's running up against a statute of limitations and that they "remain hopeful" that the whole deal can be put to bed without those nasty court proceedings getting in the way. 'Course, if it was a simple matter of cutting a $10 million check, Sprint probably would've done it by now, so there must be some haggling going on behind the scenes.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Republican lawmakers say Google "gamed" 700Mhz auction

Google's plan in the 700MHz auction drama was never much of a secret: it was always assumed that the search giant would bid enough to trigger the open-access provisions, but wasn't really interested in winning, and sure enough, the company confirmed that strategy when the bidding wrapped up. Of course, news travels slow in our nation's capital, and word of Google's dastardly plan to make sure the FCC's open-access rules were triggered is apparently shocking news to a handful of Republicans, who characterized it as "gaming the system," and asked FCC chairman Kevin Martin if the agency had been "duped." Newsflash to Reps. Fred Upton (R-Mich), Cliff Stearns (R-Fla) and John Shimkus (R-Ill): the FCC, Google, and Verizon argued about this for months and analysts had a field day, remember? And then Verizon gave up the lawsuits, went crazy on the open tip, and won the auction anyway. Of course, if Verizon hadn't won, Google would have had to make good on that $4.6B bid, which isn't exactly chump change. So, who gamed what? If anything, the FCC's coffers got a little fatter than they would have otherwise, and we're pretty certain consumers will benefit from open-access, so, uh, you guys want to stop wrecking the party now? Cool.

[Thanks, Scott]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

Vodafone chief: Verizon needs LTE before we do

Filed under: Verizon Wireless, Vodafone, LTE
BusinessWeek recently engaged Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin in an interesting, lively, and positively revealing interview about his company's 4G prospects, Android, and its marriage to Verizon, among other juicy morsels. The whole transcript is a good read, but we were particularly interested about his comments about LTE, the GSMA-adopted roadmap to 4G for GSM carriers. Despite the presumption that Vodafone would be moving to LTE alongside virtually everyone else, Sarin is careful to note that the company has not committed to it yet; they're still concerned about some intellectual property and technical issues, so they're steering clear of signing their names on the dotted line for the time being. He also says that partner Verizon is in more desperate, immediate need of LTE than it is, because EV-DO can't scale up to near-4G speeds to bridge the G gap the same way HSPA can. Either way, though, he says that Voda will be rolling out LTE in the 2011-2012 time frame, and that "for nobody is it an experience before 2010" -- so what difference does a year make, really?

[Via mocoNews]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Verizon XV6900 finally available for order

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Verizon Wireless, Windows Mobile, EV-DO, CDMA

The plans are targeted squarely at folks who put a bigger emphasis on text allowances than they do on voice minutes, and have allegedly been willed into existence as a direct result of customer feedback. Actually, you don't even need any voice plan at all to make these bad boys happen on your bill. So-called "consumer devices" get dinged for $34.99 a month (mobile email's an extra $5 here) while owners of BlackBerrys and PDA / smartphone class devices pay $54.99, getting in return an unlimited dosage of messaging and on-device data usage; calls run 40 and 25 cents per minute, respectively. If you let your thumbs do 90 percent of the talking on a daily basis, this might just be your hook-up.

[Via Phone Scoop]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Verizon Wireless announces $30 unlimited browsing plan for smartphones

Verizon Wireless has been slow to catch up with the smartphone data access plans offered by competing carriers, with premium prices and some confusing options, but things are taking a real turn for the better. The new "E-mail and Web for Smartphone" plan goes for a mere $30 a month when paired with a qualifying voice plan, and is available with the SMT5800, XV6800 and the MOTO Q9m, with other devices to hop on board in the coming months. Verizon's press release is very careful to tout unlimited email and web browsing, not data, and we have a feeling Verizon will be clamping down pretty hard on anybody trying to tether with this plan.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Read | Permalink | <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/
