We guess that the luxury handset market is alive and well as Toshiba has jumped on board with the Cosmic Shiner, a $4,000 diamond-studded phone. Based on Toshiba's 815T -- and no, this one doesn't transform -- which features HSDPA, FeliCa -- used for services like electronic wallet and identification -- a 2 megapixel camera, and memory expansion via microSD. There are only 1000 of these gem-encrusted monsters available and to get one you'll need to secure yourself a unique ID number -- apparently will be found in Seven Hills magazine -- to get in the running. We're not gonna be getting in line, but feel free to let us know what you think if you're <strike>crazy</strike> inspired enough to pick one up.

[Via Tokyomango]

It's <strike>fairly</strike> commonplace for Chinese manufacturers to crank out clones of other popular wares, but apparently, things aren't brushed off as easily when the cloning gets done by a mega-corp like Toshiba. Granted, quite a bit is lost in translation here, but the long and short of it is that NTT DoCoMo and Fujitsu are suing Tosh for creating and selling its 821T -- which, as you can see above, looks an awful lot like Fujitsu's RakuRaku handset. Reportedly, the plaintiffs have demanded that Softbank Mobile withdraw the 821T from the market, but it seems there's quite a bit more back-and-forth left to go down before the dust settles on this one.

[Via GearFuse]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Toshiba's 815T PB on Softbank threatens humanity

Filed under: Handsets, Softbank Mobile, Toshiba

We kind of wish this was fake -- and we're tentatively overjoyed that it's not -- but we can't help but feeling a little freaked at the Toshiba 815T PB on Softbank, developed to coincide with a new show featuring (you guessed it) robo-phones called Ketai Sousakan 7. Yeah yeah, QVGA, 3G, 3.2 megapixel camera, that's all well and good, but our latent fear of cellphone brain cancer kind of just went out the window.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Japanese carrier EMOBILE announces first two voice handsets

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, GSM, HSDPA, Toshiba

Up until today, Japan's EMOBILE was up and running, sure, but there was a catch: it didn't offer any phones. It had been offering Sharp's lovely EM-ONE, yes, but the device wasn't voice capable. The low-cost GSM carrier is movin' on up in the world now, though, with the introduction of the Toshiba-sourced H11T clamshell and the Windows Mobile 6-powered S11HT "EMONSTER" from HTC, which should look very familiar to anyone with a TyTN II or Tilt. EMOBILE's got a fairly small footprint that's restricted primarily to densely populated areas, so anyone looking to jet set across Japan is probably going to want the H11T, which is capable of roaming on DoCoMo's airwaves and features a 3.2 megapixel camera, one-seg tuner, and a QVGA display. The company's going to start taking preorders on March 1, with the official voice launch going down on March 28.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Toshiba announces Portege G810 smartphone

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, Toshiba

Toshiba already got official with its G710 and G910 handsets last month, but it's just now filled in that rather glaring numerical gap, with it taking the wraps off its new Portege G810 smartphone at MWC (not to be confused with Samsung's also-just-announced G810). Like those other two, this one's a Windows Mobile 6 device, and it boasts support for HSDPA and HSUPA, along with built-in GPS and A-GPS, and the always-welcome integrated WiFi and Bluetooth. Otherwise, you can expect a 2.8-inch QVGA touch screen, a 3 megapixel camera, a microSD card slot for expansion and even an FM radio in case all the usual PMP features aren't enough for you. No word on a price, but you can look for this one to hit Europe sometime in the second quarter of this year.

Right on KDDI's heels comes Softbank, roaring in with fourteen new models (not including the oh-so-pricey Tiffany phone) for the spring season. Though the lineup includes the usual array of crazy clamshells, this particular group includes a curious model designed specifically for stock trading and the Japanese introduction of a couple phones we're already well acquainted with. Yes, friends, the time has come once again for Japan's carriers to upheave their still-fresh lineups and replace them with even fresher ones. Here we take a look at KDDI au's just-announced Spring '08 collection, including a model with an e-ink display and another with a 3 inch OLED. Wowza! Note that not all of these handsets are new -- some are carryovers from the carrier's Winter '07 collection, so we won't be covering those here. Like the QWERTY form factor on Windows Mobile Standard? Like Toshiba? Hate 3G data? Live in Germany? If you answered "yes" to all of the above, you might just be a perfect fit for the "VDA." Hot on the heels of an announcement from Toshiba as the unbranded G710, the::unwired reports that Vodafone Germany has signed up to carry the little beast in its lineup as the VDA. Besides EDGE data, you get a 2 megapixel cam, GPS, 64MB of RAM, 128MB of internal ROM, and support for microSD cards up to 2GB all displayed through a positively uninteresting QVGA display. No word yet on pricing or availability, but we can't imagine there are too many folks out there rearing to line up for this one.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Toshiba gets official with Portege G910, G710 and G450 phones

We already caught sight of shiny little number pictured above these thanks to the generous folks at the FCC, but Toshiba's just now gotten official with it, along with two along with two that we haven't seen, but heard about in the company's 2008 roadmap. That one above is the Portege G910, a follow-up to the company's G900, which packs a 3-inch WVGA display, a 2 megapixel camera, Windows Mobile 6 and tri-band 900/1800/1900 GSM/EDGE support, in addition to 2100 HSDPA. If that's not your thing, you can also look forward to the Blackberry-esque G710 (pictured after the break), which boasts GPS but no 3G, and the rather, um, unique-looking G450 "modem phone" (also after the break), which boasts 3G but no GPS (among other differences). Look for all three to hit Europe in March, with the G910, G710 and G450 running roughly $880, $440 and $290, respectively.

[Via Phone Arena]

Evidence of Toshiba's new Portege G920 QWERTY doesn't get any better than an FCC filing. Still if you need more, you're looking at the G920 held aloft in the wilds of some Tosh briefing. That slide on the left looks to be tattling on Toshiba's 2008 roadmap too -- at least Toshiba's lineup for launch in Russia where this presentation was apparently delivered. From it, we see the G920 scheduled for an early Q1 release followed by a G930 in early Q4. Also spotted is the G800 with stylus input, G710 and G720 with GPS, and G450 classed as a "USB modem phone." Expect to hear more on the Q1 column of devices at CES in a few weeks.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

Toshiba's Portege G910 / G920 go FCC: followup to the G900 superphone

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, GSM, Toshiba

Probably because it's not that big of a player in the domestic cellphone space, Toshiba may not be familiar with all the ins and outs of FCC confidentiality agreements, as evidenced by its testing subcontractor leaving tons of juicy photos of the unannounced Portege G910 / G920 smartphones in those devices' recently-declassified applications. Tosh's blunder clues us in to a whole world of info about this followup to the WVGA, Windows Mobile 6 Portege G900, such as the fact that it's eschewing its predecessor's sliding form factor for the clamshell-design of the Nokia E90 (perhaps an answer to the tilting screen of HTC's TyTN II?). While full specs aren't yet available, we've pieced together that these devices (differentiated by the fact that one of them will have a crippled GPS receiver) are tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 -- sorry, fellow Americans, no US broadband here -- with WiFi, Bluetooth, and dual cameras, and powered by a Qualcomm processor of unknown speed. Hit up the gallery here for a few more inelegant FCC glamour shots, including some dissection photos that may help our clever readers glean even more information...
It's that time of year again -- that magical time when Japanese carriers pull out all the stops and deliver a mind-numbing swath of new models at once. KDDI au's rocking seven all-new models for its fall / winter '07 collection, perhaps most notably the Infobar 2 candybar that bubbled out of its ongoing concept design program. All told, we have entries from six manufacturers here spanning the candybar, slider, and clamshell (naturally) form factors, so it pretty much goes without saying that KDDI customers should have no trouble finding the phone of their dreams in this motherlode. Forge on for a closer look at each of the new models.
Continue reading KDDI au's Autumn and Winter 2007 collection

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Toshiba's skinnable 815T shows off options

Filed under: Handsets, Softbank Mobile, Toshiba

Although we knew Toshiba's 815T would soon be joining the Softbank Mobile team, the firm has finally got official on the customizable handset, and there's even pictures to prove it. Among the features are a 2.4-inch QVGA internal LCD, a 0.8-inch external OLED, two-megapixel camera, W-CDMA connectivity, microSD expansion slot, and of course, a slew of different skins and covers to liven it up. Reportedly, this here mobile is set to go on sale next week, but feel free to take a look at your options beforehand by following on after the jump.

[Via Slashphone]
Continue reading Toshiba's skinnable 815T shows off options

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

G900 gets "sleep of death" patch from Toshiba

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, Toshiba
Unhappy G900 users will be enthused to hear Toshiba has their back and has patched the early G900 issue. As we reported a week ago, the handset wasn't waking once put in standby -- which is a huge pain, resetting a handset a dozen times a day is no fun. Sorted with a simple patch issued yesterday, users simply have to hit the Toshiba support site, download the fix, and after patching can really start putting this thing through it paces. Keep in mind, if you hard reset your device in the coming weeks and months, you will need to reapply to keep your drowsy G900 from flaking out again.

[Thanks, Paul]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

Toshiba's Portege G500 gets photographed from every angle

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, Toshiba

There's sneak peeks, and then there's all out photographic mayhem. Thankfully for those looking to get a better view of Toshiba's Portégé G500, the latest group of photos safely falls in the latter category, as TheUnwired has managed to snatch up a myriad of photos showing off the smartphone. Sad as it is, that's to be expected, and we can't really recall the last time we extensively used a smartphone -- regardless of brand or platform -- that didn't exhibit some bugs. That being said, when a phone won't frickin' come out of standby, you'd think they'd be able to catch that before shipping. Many owners of Toshiba's ultra-powerful G900 Windows Mobile 6 Professional handset seem to be reporting a hodgepodge of problems that are necessitating returns, chief among them being that once the phone goes to sleep, it doesn't want to wake up until a reset is performed. Toshiba's apparently promising a fix in the next few weeks, but for folks trying to make this beauty their primary mobile, that's little consolation for the moment.

[Thanks, Gudmundur]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Unboxing the Toshiba Portege G900

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, HSDPA, Toshiba

What would you give for a WM6 QWERTY with a 3-inch screen touting an 800 x 480 pixel resolution? Hold tight Europeans and Japanese -- if reports straight from a showcase in Paris are to be believed, you'll be able to get your palms around Toshiba's inviting G900 "this month." Of course, with but a few days left until July, it will only be a matter of hours before this hunch is proven true or false, but considering that it did already pass through the gates of the FCC, it's not too far fetched. It was pretty well obscured (at least on our side of the pond) by the release of the glitzier, more glamorous WS011SH from Sharp, but that doesn't mean we don't love Toshiba's WX320T just the same. Technologically, the PHS-based Willcom device holds its own with a 2.4 inch QVGA primary display, microSD memory expansion, and integrated NetFront browser (a mainstay with many Willcom handsets), though the 1.3 megapixel cam is a bit skimpy in our humblest of opinions. Now if only someone could help us figure out why Toshiba's home page for the phone says "Carrots" in the lower left, we'd be ever so grateful.

[Via Mobilewhack]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Toshiba's G900 superphone passes FCC muster

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS, Toshiba

FCC ratification really doesn't mean much of anything about a phone's eventual release or non-release stateside, but in this case, we're doing a little jump of joy nonetheless. The reason? Toshiba's do-it-all G900 with slide-out QWERTY, Windows Mobile 6 Professional, WiFi, biometric security, 2 megapixel primary cam, tri-band HSDPA, and a glorious wide VGA display has been stamped with the feds' seal of approval. Yep, we said tri-band HSDPA, so anyone interested in trying their luck at obtaining an import should have no trouble using it here for fast data. We've seen the G900 variously referred to as a Portege and a Satellite -- here it's just called RG4-E02 -- but frankly, they can call it whatever they like and we'll still be happy campers.

Update: Sorry to break hearts here, but it appears that this particular variant of the G900 isn't even remotely bound for US shores; besides failing to support WCDMA 850 / 1900, it doesn't even offer GSM 850. Our apologies for the mix-up; let's hope the next G900 we see in the FCC offers just a little more juice. Let's be honest: 'round these parts, we're lucky to get a summer phone, let alone fricking thirteen of them. Following KDDI's announcement of ten brilliant handsets for the summer months, Japan's Softbank Mobile is unleashing a full thirteen of its own from Toshiba, Sharp, and Panasonic, along with darkhorses Samsung and HTC. As can be expected for a Japanese carrier aiming to impress with a new lineup, Softbank's colorful stable includes something for pretty much everyone. Let's have a closer look after the break.
Continue reading Softbank Mobile unveils summer '07 lineup

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

KDDI pulls a KDDI, shows entire summer lineup at once

Filed under: Handsets, Others, Panasonic, Sanyo, Sony Ericsson, KDDI, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA, Casio, Toshiba

We'd be shocked at the rate KDDI churns out new models, but let's be honest -- its domestic competitors manage to stay pretty much in lockstep, and they're all bested by the Keepin' It Real Fake machine that is mainland China. As we might expect from a massive launch on a Japanese carrier, the so-called "Collection 2007 Summer" (that's the "Summer 2007 Collection" for those not accustomed to reading phrases backwards) holds a handful of gems, including some VGA displays and 5 megapixel cams. Let's hop to it, shall we?
Continue reading KDDI pulls a KDDI, shows entire summer lineup at once

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Toshiba's 908A: Softbank style, global support

A rare moment of clarity for a Japanese manufacturer realizing that the remainder of the world lusts after its equipment? We're not sure what sparked this, but Softbank's Toshiba-sourced 813T is allegedly coming to other parts of the GSM world (not ours, we're guessing) as the 908A. Specs include 3.2 megapixel primary and VGA secondary cams, triband GSM and single-band WCDMA, microSD expansion, stereo speakers, and 2.4 inch internal plus 0.8 inch external OLED displays. Not breathtaking, but not bad, either -- and the Japanese connection gives it +15 cool factor. Look for it in late spring or early summer.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

HTC Vox and Toshiba G500 reviewed

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS, Toshiba

Are you chomping at the bit to get your hands on one of the newer candybar / QWERTY sliders from HTC or Toshiba? If so, get a load of the below review summaries and see which one is wanting to take a bite out of your wallet, mkay? For starters, the review of the HTC S710 (aka, "Vox") could be relegated to these snippets: just 140 grams (not bad) and about the same size as the Orange C600. The numeric keypad and QWERTY keyboard are both apparently quite usable and the screen is drop-dead nice (for a QVGA piece, anyway). Add in a decent 1,500 mAh battery -- and the undeniable cool factor of a candybar phone concealing QWERTY goodness -- and all around this unit gets a thumbs-up from its reviewer. Turning our attention to the Toshiba G500, the slider is rock solid, the tactile keys give excellent feedback, and the fingerprint reader is just plain awesome. Add in speedy 3G data and a better than average 2 megapixel digicam unit and you've got a winner with the G500 as well. An interesting difference between the two (besides the obvious exclusion of a dedicated numeric pad) would be the omission of Windows Mobile 6 on the G500 -- it ships with Windows Mobile 5, but might just make up for that glaring shortcoming with UMTS. The name namers have added Apple, Dell, Sony, Logitech, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Plantronics to the suit, which is asking for money damages, and a court order to stop sales of products using the Washington Research Foundations claimed patents. No word on how far along this case is, but with this many corporate lawyers in the mix, we aren't expecting any substantial developments this century.

[Via The Inquirer]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Softbank Mobile releases 911T from Toshiba

Filed under: Handsets, GSM, GPRS, HSDPA, UMTS, Softbank Mobile, Toshiba

Yeah, we covered this one before when Softbank first announced it back in January, but its spec sheet is so frickin' glorious that we felt the need to hit it up one more time now that the Japanese carrier has started populating store shelves with it. The first thing one notices when laying eyes on the 911T slider sourced from Toshiba is the screen -- all 800 x 480 of it. Other features include a decent 3.2 megapixel cam, HSDPA, Bluetooth, and a full 1GB of internal storage in a case that measures in under 18 millimeters thick. If you have the good fortune of residing in Japan, pick yours up now from Softbank in your choice of red, gray, black, or white.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Softbank Mobile set to launch WM6 devices in Q2

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Softbank Mobile, Toshiba
If you're into Toshiba and HTC WM6 handsets -- and you're in the Far East reaches of Japan -- Softbank Mobile may like to speak with you. The carrier recently stated that it would be launching WM6 Smartphones by Toshiba and HTC by the end of the second quarter (read: before the end of June). Softbank wants to be the first Japanese carrier to have WM6 units available to customers, apparently. The launch units? Well, they include the Toshiba G900 and the HTC unit (no model announced yet). We're glad to see the Toshiba-developed G900 alongside the presence of HTC, and like Softbank Mobile, we don't know which HTC unit will be forthcoming. Maybe a -- gasp -- new model?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Brian White

Toshiba announces G500 WM5 device with extended PC connectivity

Filed under: Handsets, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, Toshiba

Toshiba's higher-end G500 was announced and fondled quite a bit at the 3GSM show in Barcelona, Spain a few weeks ago. The G500's Bluetooth, WiFi, tri-band HSDPA, USB on-the-go and WM5 support (why no WM6 yet, Toshy?) seems fairly standard and par for the course. As such, there is little to set this unit off from all the other WM5 devices on the market now -- except for that Toshiba nameplate we're starting to see more and more these days as it steps up to the plate against the likes of HTC and others. One thing that's mentioned includes "extended" PC connectivity for the G500 as it acts as a the keyboard for a PC. While that sounds a little odd, we'll use that ergonomically-enhanced split soft-touch PC keyboard, thank you very much.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Brian White

Pre-installed Opera to come on some WM6 devices?

Filed under: Software, ASUS, HTC, Motorola, Windows Mobile, Misc, Toshiba
We never thought we would live to see the day that Pocket IE was pushed aside hastily by some Windows Mobile users in favor of the Opera browser. In the "fat lady sings" department that is in rumorland at the moment, the CEO of Opera has flat-out stated that some WM6 handsets will have the Opera browser pre-installed. Eek, say it isn't so! Until we can confirm this, we're on pins and needles along with every other Opera-lovin' WM customer on the planet. How about specific devices? Those beans have no been spilled yet, although the Motorola Q was alluded to along with some unspecified HTC, Toshiba and Asus units. Toshiba's new duo may not steal the show together, but the G900 is officially ready to help redefine high-end smartphone devices. The behemoth features, as we mentioned an utterly unreal 3-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, rear biometric scanner, 2 megapixel rear camera, front-facing video conferencing camera, 64MB of internal memory, miniSD expansion, tri-band HSDPA (yes!), 802.11b/g, Bluetooth, USB, video calling, and USB On-The-Go. The E01 is far more lower end, but still manages HSDPA, a 65k color display, A2DP Bluetooth, and that same 2 megapixel camera. We're still missing out on pricing and launch details, but for now you can still check out the gallery below for more pics, including a couple side-by-sides.

Looks like Toshiba's bringing the pain to HTC's TyTn with their new G900, a new 3GSM-bound Windows Mobile device that is sure to raise a few eyebrows. Besides the familiar looking face, this Windows Mobile 6 Professional phone will have an insanely high resolution 3-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display (wait, WinMo supports WVGA?), biometric scanner, 64MB internal memory, miniSD slot, tri-band HSDPA, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth, USB, video calling, and supposedly also have USB On-The-Go. No more word than that just yet (we just came by early pics from the show floor on the internets) but it's only a few hours until 3GSM gets underway in Barcelona, so we're sure to hear more then.

[Thanks, George]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Toshiba RG4-E01 HSDPA Smartphone in FCC

Filed under: Handsets, Vodafone, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, Toshiba

A little Friday present from the FCC: Toshiba's new RG4-E01 Smartphone (that's right, it doesn't look like we're talking about a Windows Mobile 6 Standard device), featuring HSDPA, a 65k color screen, 2 megapixel camera, and Bluetooth with A2DP. Look for this on Vodafone, probably later this weekend when 3GSM kicks off in Barcelona. Gallery below!
Alright, this is just getting ridiculous. Between NTT DoCoMo, KDDI, and now Softbank, we've already seen enough new phones for the Japanese market in this young year to last us years of in-depth analysis. That'd be just great if we actually had years to track 'em all down and play with them, but oh, no -- we've no doubt that there'll be a fresh round of handsets dropping just in time for the temperatures to rise. Let's see if we can blurt all these new Softbanks out before they've been obsoleted by their successors: from Samsung, the 708SC; from Sharp, the 812SH and 813SH; Toshiba brings the 911T, 812T, and 813T; Nokia (yeah, Nokia... crazy!) packs the X01NK; Panasonic does the 706P, and NEC rounds out the bunch with the 706N. Some of this is old news (at least one phone, the kid-friendly 812T, has been kicking around for a while, and the X01NK is basically a rebranded E62) but the real story here seems to be the 812SH clamshell which'll be offered in no fewer than 20 (yes, twenty) frickin' colors. But wait, it gets better: the phone is co-branded with Pantone, which we're guessing must mean that the color of the phone is extraordinarily... uh, accurate. The 911T slider is another winner, rocking that same 800 x 480 display we saw in Hitachi's W51H, a 3.2 megapixel cam, A2DP, a 1seg TV tuner, 1GB of onboard storage with microSD expansion, and enough juju to humiliate pretty much any phone with the stones to step to it. Actually, we're pretty sure the same could be said of about any phone in the bunch.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler
