Just days after Telus picked up the attractive LG Venus, the carrier has officially started offering up the Motorola Mike i877. The half-rugged, half-sleek looking flip phone was designed by Pininfarina and features integrated Bluetooth, a multimedia player (MP3, AAC, WMA), microSD expansion slot, miniUSB port, 1.3-megapixel camera, VibraCall, a digital voice recorder and the obligatory push-to-talk support. If it floats your boat, you can snag it now sans contract for $349.99, or anywhere between $149.99 to $299.99 if you're cool with signing the dotted line for varying lengths of time.

[Via MobileInCanada]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Telus picks up the LG Venus

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Telus Mobility, EV-DO, CDMA

Strong work, Telus! First you guys are pretty much on the ball with your release of the BlackBerry 8330 Curve and the Motorola Q9c, and now you've become the first Canadian carrier to offer the LG Venus -- and you're clearly reveling in it, too, since you point out on your product page that this is actually LG's first touchscreen phone in all of Canada. $99.99 CAD (about $100) of your customer's hard-earned savings is going to net them a 2 megapixel camera, QVGA primary display, microSD slot, GPS, EV-DO, and stereo Bluetooth, so we'd say you've done good -- for the moment, anyway. Keep up the strong work.

[Thanks, Jesse]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Telus adds BlackBerry Curve, Motorola Q9c

Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, RIM, Telus Mobility, Windows Mobile, EV-DO, CDMA

There are certain phones that seem to have the uncanny ability to unite a fabulous cross section of carriers across North America, and these two are clearly headed in that direction. Telus way up there in Canada has launched the Motorola Q9c and announced the eventual availability of the BlackBerry Curve 8330, giving it a power pack of smartphones embraced by a good number of CDMA cousins to the south. Both devices offer EV-DO data and Bluetooth; the Curve offers up GPS and a 2 megapixel camera, while the Windows Mobile 6-based Q9c makes do with a 1.3 megapixel sensor -- but offers the key bonus of being available immediately for $149.99 CAD on a three-year deal. No release date or pricing for the Curve has been announced.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Read - Motorola Q9c
Read - BlackBerry Curve

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Canada's Koodo Mobile lights up

As expected, Telus has rolled out its young, fresh, "fat-free" (their words, not ours) Koodo Mobile brand this week, targeting Canadians looking for a no-frills way to get wireless on the cheap. In light of all the unlimited action we've seen stateside as of late, we're not necessarily blown away by the offerings -- but $65 CAD for 1000 minutes plus unlimited incoming calls, 50 text messages, and per-second billing is alright... we guess. The phone selection is positively barebones, too, reflecting the mantra of the company itself; buyers can choose from a Samsung U410 for $75, a Motorola KRZR for $200, and a W385 -- also from Moto -- for $125. Any Canadians want to chime in here? Is this a blessing, or a Telus-backed fleece?

[Via Howard Chui]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Telus launching new low-cost brand Koodo Mobile today?

It looks like our friends to the north are getting hooked up with another wireless choice later today -- sorta. Just like Fido is little more than a discount outlet for daddy Rogers, it seems that "Koodo Mobile" will be launching under the Telus umbrella offering plans as low as $15 CAD per month, per-second billing, and at least some contract-free offerings. Oh, and Koodo's catchy tagline? "Good call." How creative!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

That pretty much settles it: Telus hiring LTE engineers

Filed under: Telus Mobility, GSM, LTE
We still don't know whether Telus will be so hasty as to decommission its existing CDMA network in favor of UMTS / HSPA ahead of the long road to 4G, but it any rate, it looks like the Canadian carrier's next-gen technology of choice is darn near locked up. A job listing for a Senior Switch Engineer details CDMA and EV-DO experience as part of its requirements, naturally -- but here's where it gets interesting: they want "knowledge on UMTS, IMS, and LTE evolution" as well, without any mention of UMB or WiMAX to be found. In other words, if we wait around long enough, we'll be able to call Telus a GSM carrier, which should make the Rogers monolith just a little uneasy.

[Thanks, Justin Y.]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Hack enables gpsOne on CDMA HTC Titan variants

Filed under: Handsets, Software, HTC, Alltel, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, Bell Mobility, Telus Mobility, Windows Mobile, EV-DO, CDMA
The clever souls at PhoneNews seem to have cobbled together info from dcd's posts at XDA-Developers and other places on how to get gpsOne -- this technology uses both satellite and your provider's network to determine location -- up and running on CDMA HTC Titan sets. Once your handset -- including PPC-6800, XV6800, Mogul, P4000, and likely others -- is tweaked, applications like TomTom, Google Maps, and other GPS tools will be available for your navigational enjoyment. This hack will require that you unlock your handset, update the device's software, and then update the baseband radio firmware to get at the goods. We heard this same tale back when Bell Canada was involved in all that sale / merger / rumor business, but this time Telus is the center of the fun. It seems that Telus may be set to abandon its 'Betamax" network and is now ogling the hundreds of millions of dollars in roaming revenue that the GSM carriers enjoy by considering a move to tap into it. Of course, this is merely speculation, but the story does seem to be gaining traction and Rogers shares actually suffered a 2.6 percent drop on this news yesterday. The Olympics are in Vancouver in 2010, we're thinking if Telus really was going to go for it -- and shell out an estimated half billion dollars -- that would be a prime time to roll out a hybrid EV-DO / HSDPA network.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

T-Mobile gets in Telus' face over use of "My Faves"

T-Mobile launched its myFaves service back in October of 2006, a service that's proven popular with customers -- and apparently, it's gaining popularity with other carriers 'round the world, too. In Canada, Telus unveiled a program whereby five numbers of your choosing get unlimited calling and texting in May of this year; sounds familiar, right? Yeah, it is -- same deal as myFaves, actually -- and that probably wouldn't have riled up T-Mobile. The Deutsche Telekom division doesn't deal much with Canada, after all, and a little international copycatting never hurt anyone, right? Indeed, we figure Telus probably would've gotten away with the promotion had they not decided to call it... wait for it... "My Faves." Now yes, we understand that the "M" is capitalized and they've used two words instead of melding them into one, but come on. Needless to say, T-Mob is less than pleased with the branding and has filed a trademark infringement suit in federal court up in the Great White North with the intention of getting Telus to go with something a little less familiar (say, "Fy Maves," for example). For what it's worth, Telus jumped on the Canadian trademark for its service a month before T-Mobile did, but we're pretty sure the whole prior art concept might apply here.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

40MHz of Canadian spectrum auction set aside for newcomers

Filed under: Bell Mobility, Rogers Wireless, Telus Mobility, Misc
Although America's upcoming 700MHz spectrum auction could see a newcomer or two join the fold, Canada's auction is actually calling for it. Reportedly, Industry Minister Jim Prentice made known that 40MHz of the 105MHz of spectrum available for bidding would be "set aside for newcomers to the industry," hinting that more competition could eventually lead to lower cellphone rates across the nation. He went on to say that the "introduction of new service providers would help to make Canada's wireless market more dynamic, more competitive, and more innovative," and moreover, only companies that hold less than 10-percent of revenues in that market would be allowed to bid for the luscious 40MHz segment. As expected, big boys in the biz are none too pleased about the announcement, with Telus executive vice-president Janet Yale even going so far as to say that it believed the move "wouldn't be in the best interest of consumers or telecom industry overall."
Telus was kind enough to zip over another handset for our viewing enjoyment, the pretty fab -- though somewhat homely -- HTC S640. This little rubber-finished handset packs EV-DO, Windows Mobile 6 standard, 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, WiFi, and a pretty well planned QWERTY effort for mobile messaging speed demons. So what do we think in a few lines or less? We like the handset's form factor, the finish -- which is really nice as your hands do stick quite well to the material -- and we love the two rocker style "soft keys," they're hands down the best thing about the device's design. Sure, the keypad is a wee bit cramped, but without growing the S640's chin in a big way (Canadians, think Brian Mulroney), we think they've done well with the layout. The S640 can be grabbed right now for about $150 on a 3 year contract. Read on for a pile of pics -- including a few nice comparisons with Telus' HTC Touch.

Gallery: Hands-on with the Telus HTC S640, aka HTC Iris

Seriously, are there any North American carriers left at this point that don't carry the RAZR 2? Yeah, we know there are a few that still don't, but wow, we've gotta admit we're impressed with Motorola's ability to seal the deal here. Telus naturally bundles its full suite of ARPU-enhancing goodies like Telus Mobile Radio and Mobile TV -- so if you think the $249.99 CAD (about $265) you're paying upfront on a three-year contract is the only way Telus is going to make some coin off of ya, you're dead wrong.

[Via Mobile In Canada]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Telus launches the HTC P3050 "Touch" and HTC S640

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Telus Mobility, Windows Mobile, EV-DO, CDMA

We've been hearing rumors of these handsets for a while and true to its quick release nature, Telus launched EV-DO rev. A upgradeable (from left) HTC P3050 Touch (HTC Vogue) and the HTC S640 (HTC Iris) in the Canadian market this morning. The P3050 is the CDMA equivalent of the GSM Touch and packs the same goodies under the shell including Windows Mobile 6, The lovely TouchFLO UI, 320 x 240 display, Bluetooth, and sadly doesn't pack WiFi or the GPS we had hoped for. This fella is in the shops as of today from CAD $499 off contract to CAD $149 on a 3 year stint. The S640 is the CDMA flavor of the Cavalier and Excalibur, packs Windows Mobile 6, Bluetooth, WiFi, and eschews all that touchscreen goodness for a good ol' fashioned keypad. Pricing is set from CAD $449 off contract to CAD $149 on a 3 year contract. Things are rocking north of the border for the EV-DO crowd, so here's hoping they land here soon, and yes, we're looking at you Sprint and Verizon.

Read - HTC P3050 "Touch"
Read - HTC S640

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

Canadian court certifies class-action lawsuit against carriers

Filed under: Bell Mobility, Rogers Wireless, Telus Mobility
If you're sick and tired of wireless carriers charging an arm and a leg for so-called "system access fees," you aren't alone. As wireless carriers up north rack in close to $800 million a year in said fees, they continue to brand the fees as required by the Canadian Radio-Television Commission -- even though the Government says that fees are no longer valid and don't need to be charged. Carriers were whacking Canadians with charges ranging from $6.95 for Rogers and Telus and up to $8.95 for Bell customers. Naturally, that kind of apparent overcharging can only lead to one thing: a class-action lawsuit. This time around, Canada's Telus plays host, offering the device for $229.99 Canadian (about $217) on a whopping three-year contract (yes, we know three-year contracts are the norm in Canada, but our jaw still drops a little every time we hear it). Meanwhile, folks looking to rock out contract-free may do so for $549.99 Canadian, a shade over $519. Digit Wireless' quirky Fastap text entry system doesn't have the biggest following in the world, but every once in a while, some random manufacturer will release a Fastap-equipped handset on some random carrier. Case in point: China's ZTE -- of all companies -- has hooked up with Telus up in Canada to release the rather nice looking D90 flip this week. Specs ain't shabby, either, with EV-DO, stereo Bluetooth, integrated GPS, multimedia support, and a 1.3 megapixel cam. Get it now for $80 CDN (about $76) on a 3-year contract.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Telus Windows Mobile 6 update for P4000 is live

Filed under: Software, HTC, Telus Mobility, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA

Telus has added the SCH-m620 (known as UpStage on Sprint) to its stable, and with the catch phrase "business in the front, party in the back," Telus is likening it to a mullet -- which is kinda right in some sad way. As with the UpStage before it, music will be the focus of Telus' latest, with Telus Mobile Radio -- Powered by XM -- and Telus Mobile Music as the headliners. Telus Mobile Music will let fans download tracks at CAN $1.99 a pop, plus a $0.50 "download fee" -- no wonder this tech isn't taking off -- or for CAN $20 month, the service is unlimited. Pricing starts at CAN $149 on a three year stint and should be hitting stores later this week.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

iDEN to finally lose some pudge with i290 candybar

Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, Telus Mobility

i880 series aside (maybe), Motorola's iDEN lineup really doesn't have a track record of wowing the fashion conscious among us. Granted, the network has always been targeted at heavy-duty industries where impressing those around you with your face candy isn't necessarily a priority, but it'd still be nice to have the option of getting in on the most ubiquitous PTT service without carrying a phone that looks like a brightly-colored rock (and no, we're not talking about a PEBL, either). Enter the i290, a phone outed by Motorola that displays Telus branding -- Canada, here we come -- and will almost certainly find its way to Sprint, too. Little is known about the slim candybar, but the lack of a "c" in the model number likely means that it's straight iDEN, not an iDEN / CDMA hybrid. High end? No, but unlike most of its stablemates, you might get away without anyone knowing you're using iDEN here. We'll throw out more details as we get 'em.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Telus upgrades select EV-DO areas to Rev. While it's no big surprise, Telus has finally gone official with its EV-DO Rev. A details, explaining that Southern Ontario, Montreal, and Winnipeg can now enjoy the speedy luxuries of Rev. A technology. The speed boosts are part of a $100 million investment to roll out EV-DO across Canada, and while it seems that only select locales can look forward to average download speeds of approximately 450Kbps to 800Kbps at the moment, Telus did note that these "enhanced speeds" would grace "the company's full existing EV-DO coverage areas later this year." As for connecting up with the service, Telus will offer a variety of Sierra Wireless cards to fit a myriad of setups, and those springing for Panasonic's CF-19 or CF-30 Toughbook can jump right on if you purchase the embedded modem.

[Via TheBoyGeniusReport]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Telus backs out: BCE Inc. and Telus won't unite

Filed under: Bell Mobility, Telus Mobility
Round two for big Telco mergers seems set to have fallen off the rails in Canada -- round one saw Rogers Wireless merge with Microcell Communications (Fido). While bigger can sometimes be better, in the wireless world lack of competition can hurt and Canadian users may have just ended up with bigger bills, the same service, and fewer choices. Of course, said merger would have involved both wireless and wireline services of the two giants, but the wireless parts alone would have seen a combined subscriber list 10.9 million names long. Apparently BCE Inc. was in such a hurry to get this done that the time pressures are what gave Telus cold feet. Of course, a group led by Cerberus Capital Management and the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan (BCE's biggest shareholder) are still in the running, so expect an update as soon as the dust settles.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

BlackBerry 8830 "coming soon" on Telus website

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Telus Mobility, 1xRTT, GSM, EV-DO, CDMA
Telus customers who can't part with their BlackBerry when they travel across the pond could rest easy when the 8830 was listed as coming soon on their website. A happiness in southern Ontario, Montreal, and Winnepeg doesn't do a heck of a lot of good without hardware to match, so Canada's Telus has teamed up with Sierra Wireless to deliver a pair of modems that take full advantage of the speed. The 595U is a USB modem that already sees duty on Sprint, offering up support of PCs and Macs alike with average download speeds ranging from 450 to 800 kbps and uploads commanding 300 to 400 kbps. Look for it soon for $99.99 CAD (about $94) on a three-year agreement or $349.99 (about $331) commitment-free. The other unit, the MP 595 GPS, is intended for public safety, transportation, and field service applications with military-spec ruggedness, integrated serial, USB, and Ethernet connections, and a GPS receiver for vehicle tracking. Needless to say, it won't be available from your friendly local Telus outlet, but interested parties should be able to call the carrier directly to get hooked up.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Telus confirms BlackBerry 8830

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Telus Mobility, 1xRTT, GSM, GPRS, EV-DO, CDMA
Now that everybody <strike>is doing it</strike> has done it, it seems Telus is about to drop this newest and sweetest BlackBerry flavored device in Canada. Check the link for more info and a pretty 360 degree view.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

The HTC P4000 for Telus in the flesh

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Telus Mobility, Windows Mobile, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA

Being the first on the block to have the latest and greatest is an awesome feeling and the HTC P4000 (aka Titan) is no exception. Our favorite CDMA carrier up north, Telus, just landed the latest bad boy today that's sporting Windows Mobile 5.0 with a cost of $200 on a three (ouch!) year contract. Just in case you forgot the spec sheet, we'll give it to you again: EV-DO Rev. A, 2 megapixel cam, 256 MB of RAM, 128 of ROM, and Bluetooth 2.0. Verizon and Sprint customers should be very jealous!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Michael Caputo

Telus launches HTC P4000?

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Telus Mobility, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA
Word on the street is that the HTC P4000 has allegedly landed at Telus Mobility in Canada. RIM isn't selfish -- especially when it comes to sharing with its own countrymen -- and the BlackBerry 8830 isn't going to be any different. Our friends up north at Telus report that the svelte new Cyclone is in the final testing stages with a release in the not too distant future. Here's the rundown on specs: a dual band 800 / 1900 MHz CDMA radio, GSM / GPRS support for international roaming, trackball navigation, OS 4.2, media player, and removable memory. Now, only a two important questions remain -- at what cost and when?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Michael Caputo

Black Motorola KRZR K1m comes to Telus

Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, Telus Mobility, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA
Looks like Canada's Telus Mobility got hooked up with the Motorola KRZR K1m in yet another shade -- this time, black. We've been waiting for a while to see when new K1m colors would start showing up, and here's a pretty decent first stab at black we think (or second stab, if you count Sprint's). Anything new besides the color here? Very doubtful. If you just bought that pretty solver K1m from Telus recently, we feel for ya. The CDMA Vox (GSM version announced a few moons back at the 2007 3GSM World Congress) will feature Windows Mobile 6, WiFi and Bluetooth, microSD, 2 megapixel cam and a 2.4 inch color display, though the real draw here is the dual keypad design. We got a chance to play around with a Telus-branded HTC 6800 tonight -- we are in love. Significantly thinner and lighter than the TyTn and 6700, the 6800 has a spring-assisted slide and a keyboard with a slightly rubbery soft-touch finish that's probably the best we've ever seen on a portable device. This is the new handset to beat -- we can't wait to see the GSM version.

P.S. -We saw the 6800 on Sprint, but the executive who left it out snatched it out of our hands before we could take shots of it. Like you're so surprised it's coming.

Originally announced by Telus way back in August, the March 14th launch coincided conveniently -- and we're sure totally coincidentally -- with the launch of number portability up there. The only handset available at launch is the Motorola Q, available both through Amp'd retail setups and Telus stores. Package options are pretty sweet, from $30 to 75 CDN for voice and a bevy of entertainment add-ons for radio and TV services.

[Via MocoNews]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

Telus unleashes LG 8600

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Telus Mobility, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA

Canada's been doing a respectable job keeping up with LG's Chocolate releases with both Rogers and Telus offering variants of the Korean slider; next up, Telus is rolling deep with the Chocolate flip. Known by various model names on different carriers -- all typically ending in 8600 -- Telus' version will go simply by "8600" and offer the same comprehensive music support, touch sensitive external controls, EV-DO, and strapping good looks that have brought it success elsewhere. Look for it for $130 CDN on a three-year agreement -- a harsh sentence to be sure, but hey, at least they throw in a 1GB microSD card and reader.

[Via Howard Forums, thanks Jay]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Telus adds Samsung u510, white Motorola KRZR

Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, Samsung, Telus Mobility, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA

We feel like we can barely tell the difference between the white KRZR from Moto and the original gray -- especially if you squint your eyes a bit -- but choice is always good nonetheless, and to that end Telus has added the paler variant to its lineup. Going toe to toe with the K1m in the high-fashion game, Samsung's u510 has also found its way onto the CDMA carrier (look familiar?) with a 220 x 176 display, 1.3 megapixel cam, microSD slot -- something its Helio doppelganger lacks -- and touch-sensitive controls. Grab your white KRZR for the same price as its grayer counterpart, $149 CDN -- or a u510 for $50 CDN less, $100, both on a three-year agreement.

[Thanks, Jay]

Read - Samsung u510
Read - Motorola K1m MOTOKRZR

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Switchers, rejoice: Canada gets WNP today

Filed under: Bell Mobility, Rogers Wireless, Telus Mobility, Misc
Let's be honest: even if you like your carrier, being married to it sucks. Whether you're staring down the business end of a three-year contract (Canadian carriers, we're looking squarely at you), your company is engaged in some sort of business relationship with a particular carrier, or you can't take your beloved phone number with you -- whatever the reason may be, getting locked in instills a feeling of dread and unease that we'd personally rather be without. Contracts and business deals may be here to stay, but for our friends north of the border, your government has finally solved that whole number conundrum. As of today, carriers doing business in metropolitan areas are required to support wireless number portability (WNP, as the kids are calling it these days), opening the floodgates from Rogers to Telus, Telus to Bell, Bell to Fido, and so on. We're not sure what carrier(s) stand to benefit the most from the move, but if you've been waiting for today with bated breath, let us know all about your move in comments!

[Via Scott Robinson]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Canadian government launches public consultation for spectrum auction

Filed under: Bell Mobility, Rogers Wireless, Telus Mobility, HSDPA, UMTS, Misc
Remember the joy that the AWS auctions brought us? The thrills, chills, intrigue, and ultimately the huge dollars that were raked in by the FCC? Well, grab your popcorn an' soda because the stage is being set for the same brouhaha in Canada. The Honorable Maxime Bernier - the Minister of Industry announced the launch of a public consultation on a framework for said auction in the 2 GHz band (read: Advanced Wireless Services). In total, 105 MHz of bandwidth will be available for auction; to put that in perspective - the AWS auction was for 1122 licenses covering an 90 MHz chunk of 3G spectrum, this auction will be for more spectrum, with an unknown quantity of licenses and far fewer subscribers. Bear in mind, this is only a consultation and is the first in many steps before this auction is truly ready to start. This could be terribly slow going because in Canada, we live for committees, consultations, and inquiries. If the event is anything like the 161-round nail biter covered in the late summer - you can be 100 percent sure that we will not be there covering any of the action.

[Via HowardForums]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

Telus, Sierra Wireless carrying EV-DO Rev A to Canada

Filed under: Peripherals, Telus Mobility, EV-DO
If the Canucks out there have been getting a bit jealous at all the Rev A love going around down south, your resentment ends now -- well, sometime this year, anyway.
