As expected, Motorola and T-Mobile have materialized a new variant of the Sidekick Slide, replacing that rather polarizing shade of purple with... well, an equally polarizing shade of red. The Sidekick Slide Scarlet, as it's known, features the same QVGA display, 1.3 megapixel cam, microSD slot, and Hiptop-first sliding display as the original and is available starting today for $199.99 on contract.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Blackberry Bold release dates, pricing leak out

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless

Those of you dying to get your QWERTY on with RIM's hot new Blackberry Bold can start marking your calendars and stashing cash under the cushions -- release dates and pricing info have hit the tubes this morning. As expected, AT&T will get the Bold first in July for $300, while Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile customers will have to wait until September. Oddly, T-Mo subs will have to cough up an extra $50, which seems a little unfair. Of course, these aren't official dates and prices, so things are likely to change, but we'd say everything seems in the ballpark, wouldn't you?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

T-Mobile working on advanced text blocking capability, maybe more

So we caught wind yesterday of rumors that T-Mobile was planning to offer several comprehensive levels of text and call blocking this summer, offering super-granular control over who exactly can reach your beloved handset. Options would include per-number blocking, SMS, MMS, IM, and email on an individual basis -- only free messages would still be unblockable. We contacted T-Mobile directly and got the following response: "We are working on a service we plan to launch this summer that would enable customers to block text messages (beyond what is available today)...stay tuned." In other words, yeah, it sounds like there are some more advanced options on the way. That's good news for us -- and bad news for our stalkers.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

T-Mobile admits that 3G iPhone will be tested in Austria

Filed under: Handsets, T-Mobile, GSM, UMTS, Apple, OS X

derStandard, the same publication that announced that the iPhone would be sailing into Austria via T-Mobile is now reporting that the same carrier will be testing the 3G iPhone in the aforesaid country. We'd take this with half a tablespoon of salt for now, but The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sprint-Nextel Corp. is "seriously considering spinning off or selling its ailing Nextel unit." That's according to undisclosed people "familiar with the situation," though Sprint did decline to comment on whether it actually was considering a sale of Nextel. Also of note, Cyren Call is reportedly attempting to "assemble a consortium of investors to acquire Nextel as part of its plans to create a nationwide wireless network for public safety communications," and while it can't be confirmed, we are hearing that Sprint is "contemplating other possible buyers such as private equity firms." Still, these same sources made clear that "no deal was imminent and that Sprint was preoccupied for the moment with other matters." It's no secret that the firm would be way more attractive to suitors (read: Deutsche Telekom) if the flagging Nextel division was detached from the deal, but we guess we'll have to wait and see how it all plays out. Great news, T-Mobile USA fans -- the roller coaster ride is finally over. After we thought T-Mobile's 3G network was but moments away from launching, we soon found that data may be left out. Oddly enough, a few reports hailing from the Big Apple claimed that data actually was included. At long last, the carrier is coming clean and announcing its official 3G rollout in the States. Unfortunately, the UMTS / HSDPA network is initially launching in New York City alone, but the good news is that data will be included and the operator expects the high-speed data network to "be available in cities where a majority of its subscribers currently use data services" by the year's end. Yeah, it's safe to celebrate now, we promise it's not a(nother) false alarm. Full release posted after the jump.
Continue reading T-Mobile clears everything up: 3G rollout (with data) is on in NYC

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Nokia, T-Mobile make nice, pair Ovi with web'n'walk

Filed under: Multimedia, Software, Nokia, T-Mobile

When we'd heard that T-Mobile Germany was at loggerheads with Nokia over its Ovi services, the carrier was quick to point out that it didn't offer any Ovi-compatible devices in its lineup to begin with and that it was "in discussions with Nokia about this topic and [was] confident to find a common path in the near future." Sure enough, it looks as though that "common path" has now been found with an announcement that Nokia will be working closely with T-Mob to integrate its web'n'walk mobile internet service with Ovi for deployment on future devices customized for the carrier. There's no telling what sorts of contracts got signed behind the scenes here, but if we had to guess, we'd say most of T-Mobile's existing content-based revenue streams are going to end up being preserved by appearing within the Ovi sandbox on these new phones. A loss for Nokia? It's still not exactly clear what the relationship is between the two new codenames, but we can now say with some certainty that there'll be at least one all-new model in the mix since the rendering used on the device here doesn't look like any Sidekick currently in the stable. Hiptop3 reports that the Gekko's codename (wait, a codename for a codename?) is "Style 2," pretty much confirming that it'll replace the low-end and recently discontinued iD. Despite the focus on keeping this one cheap, the site also says that the Gekko will sport a feature set similar to that of the LX, so it's not clear what specs will be sacrificed to keep this one affordable. A cheap LX alternative with what appear to be changeable faceplates? Count us in.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Deutsche Telekom looking to pick up Sprint?

Over the years our pals at Deutsche Telekom haven't exactly played the most aggressive game in the States, but finally we have word about the first possible suitor for the ailing Sprint. Although the rumor originates from German paper Der Spiegel and doesn't cite sources, word has it Deutsche Telekom and T-Mobile USA are making the possibility of snagging Sprint (and all its heavy baggage, read: Nextel) a "top priority" in a bid to take a competitor out of the game and pick up the number three spot. Supposedly formal negotiations haven't even begun yet, but if you thought the integration between Sprint and Nextel was messy, just watch what happens when you bring a third carrier into the mix -- and did we mention the infrastructure would be GSM with AWS, PCS CDMA, and iDEN, all competing for spectrum and handset allocation? Good luck guys.

[Thanks, Khattab]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

T-Mobile 3G goes live, with data (kind of)

T-Mobile's 3G network started going live today, and it looks like that early word from a company memo may not hold true for all users. Some markets may in fact have a silent soft-launch of faster data rates, we've heard from several tipsters who've said that they're already getting faster data service, and now the company itself getting the word out that it's launching data as well. But company peeps were indeed instructed to make sure customers don't count on that faster data being present; bottom line is you may have it, you may not (but if you take T-Mobile at its word, you should). NYC is the first market to light up, but others should come online soon -- anyone trying it out? We'd recommend taking this one with a healthy dose of salt, but word on the street has it that Tony Hawk -- being the unashamed Sidekick lover that he is -- is gearing up to receive his very own limited edition LX. Oh, and his adoring fans can snap one up too if they're quick. Details about the unit itself are scant, but it will obviously be Tony Hawk-branded and able to do a 900 on command. We are hearing, however, that it's slated to land on July 16th -- just in time for the T-Mobile sponsored Boom Boom HuckJam, too.

[Via Hiptop3, image courtesy of AOL]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

T-Mobile touting dollar-a-day prepaid service

T-Mobile's looking to expand its prepaid offerings, branching beyond the typical minute allowances to offer its new "Pay By The Day" service which -- you guessed it -- charges for service by the day. One dollar per day, to be exact, nets you unlimited nighttime calling and unlimited calling to other T-Mobile numbers, while other calls will run you 10 cents per minute. At the end of the day, you're shelling out $30 a month on average for the ability to yap until you're physically unable to speak any longer, as long as you don't call out of network during daylight hours. It's going to be voice only. That's right, you heard us, VOICE ONLY. So trepidatious is this company to actually get their 3G data rollout, um, rolled out, they're launching first with kneecapped voice-only service, keeping only EDGE for those demanding data. Here's the snippet from the memo we received:

"3G is the next generation of our wireless network, following our current GSM network. In this early phase of our network evolution, 3G is a new technology for carrying wireless voice calls and supporting existing data capabilities on our network. In future phases, this next generation network will power 'high-speed' (3G) products and services that connect customers in new and exciting ways. ... Inform customers who are interested in high-speed data that the first phase of our 3G roll out supports voice only." [Emphasis ours]

No word on when T-Mobile actually plans to turn on the faster data, but for everyone who hasn't already jumped ship -- hoping against hope -- the wait continues.

P.S. -Don't believe everything you hear about this kind of thing being status quo. Every single major US 3G network -- including Cingular, Verizon, and Sprint -- went live as either data card-only (with phones added later), or data and voice together.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

T-Mobile rolling out 3G tomorrow in New York, sorry New Jersey

Our best friends at T-Mobile are getting set to roll out 3G in New York soon -- real soon, as was previously expected. New York will launch on May 1, to be exact, according to TmoNews.com. That's, like, tomorrow. The leaked document promises T-Mobile customers the "great call quality they've come to expect...and more network availability". The rest of the network will be rolled out in 2008 to 20 markets, including Los Angeles, Detroit, San Diego, Austin, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Miami, and several more. As TmoNews.com points out, New Jersey and Long Island are mysteriously off the list. View all the launch cities after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Continue reading T-Mobile rolling out 3G tomorrow in New York, sorry New Jersey

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Fruhlinger

"Aspen" and "Gekko" join the Hiptop codename parade?

A little early for all-new Sidekicks, isn't it? TmoNews is reporting that a pair of new codenames have rather suddenly appeared on the Hiptop radar -- "Gekko" and "Aspen" -- with the former due on T-Mobile come July 27 and the latter rolling on in just three short days later on July 30. The three-day separation between two Sidekick launches itself seems a bit suspect, though to be fair, the last round of Danger codenames we caught wind of turned out to be dead-on legit. As Hiptop3 suggests, a round of LX (or Slide) limited editions seems like the most plausible explanation here -- or maybe it's just T-Mob's fancy way of describing new colors.

[Via PHONE Magazine and Hiptop3.com]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

T-Mobile confirms it'll have an Android device sometime this year

The first Android devices were always scheduled to arrive later this year, and while we've already seen a couple prototypes and hacked ports floating around, it looks like T-Mobile is the first out of the gate to confirm that it'll have phones based on Google's mobile OS. Speaking at the Wireless Innovations 2008 conference, T-Mo's VP of broadband and new business division Joe Sims said he'd played with an early version of T-Mobile's first Android phone and that it would ship in the fourth quarter of this year. Sims said that although he was initially skeptical of Android, he's now "impressed," and that T-Mobile would eventually have "more than one" Android phone. Now, if someone would just let us know what this magical phone actually is, we'd be happy -- HTC Dream, anyone?

[Via IntoMobile]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

House bill proposes ban on in-flight cellphone use

Filed under: Culture, Handsets, Messaging, Alltel, Amp'd, Boost Mobile, ATT, Helio, Sprint, T-Mobile, Qwest, Verizon Wireless, Virgin Mobile, US Cellular
This could -- at least temporarily -- put an end the nightmarish scenario involving you, lack of sleep, and some freakish chatty Cathy plopped next to you by the airline. Just when we were getting used to T-Mobile's Shadow, it appears we're going to have to make room in our pockets for its successor... the Shadow II. Picking up almost exactly where the first iteration left off, this grainy spy shot reveals that its going to be more of the same for the revamp, save for some new rounded edges and oh-so-chic reflective finish. We'll assume the company is sticking to the plan with a slide out numeric keypad, but you never know; they could be hiding a QWERTY under there... or some kind of weird Gremlin.

[Thanks, Jason]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

T-Mobile launches WiFi-laden BlackBerry Pearl 8120, we handle it

Filed under: Handsets, Features, RIM, T-Mobile, GSM, EDGE

The next episode of the ubiquitous Pearl is now available in T-Mobile stores across the land, bringing the spec sheet in line with the features Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T customers have been enjoying for a little while now -- a 2 megapixel camera, external microSD slot, and 3.5mm headphone jack, just to name a few. Unlike the 8130 for CDMA networks, the 8120 that T-Mobile and AT&T share adds a 802.11b/g radio, but the T-Mobile version packs yet a couple more tricks up its sleeve -- you know, the ones you'd probably expect of any modern T-Mobile phone with WiFi, namely support for myFaves and HotSpot@Home. That last bit about the WiFi calling is where it gets really interesting. Put simply, the experience we had setting up, using, and making calls with the new Pearl linked up to our router was the best we've had so far with any HotSpot@Home device; it definitely seems like T-Mobile and RIM are learning a thing or two about how to make this a truly seamless and painless process. A "UMA" indicator on the display lets you know that calls are being routed over the service, but if you're not paying attention to it, you might never know it's happening -- it's just that good. Grab it starting today for a shade under $150 on contract, or if you'd prefer to keep your money firmly in your pocket, you can still live vicariously through our gallery here!

Gallery: T-Mobile launches WiFi-laden BlackBerry Pearl 8120, we handle it

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Samsung's t339 for T-Mobile: yep, it does HotSpot@Home

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, T-Mobile, GSM, EDGE

Thanks to a few BlackBerrys, we can keep our standard "there aren't any HotSpot@Home-compatible smartphones!" argument to a minimum here, but still -- you've gotta admit that T-Mobile's seriously going overboard with the midrange WiFi handsets. It looks like the upcoming t339 flip will be yet another, thanks to FCC documentation showing the presence of 802.11 aboard its thin, brownish shell. For what it's worth, this could end up being the sexiest HotSpot@Home dumbphone yet (we're not huge fans of the Katalyst's look, we admit), but still, guys, give us an N95 or something. The program will be designed to send messages to in-the-know subscribers in the event of a natural disaster, attack, or child abduction, and naturally, folks will be able to opt out if they prefer the "ignorance is bliss" approach. The system is also apparently going to feature specific provisions requiring participating carriers to make sure disabled users can get the alert via special vibration or audible alerts, though it's not clear how those will differ from the vibrates and beeps the rest of the populace receives. If all goes well, carriers who opt to implement the system will have to have it running within 10 months, so we'll finally be able to get that "OMG TRNDO" text we've always wanted to receive.

[Via Phone Scoop]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sidekick Slide turning red for round 2?

Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, T-Mobile, Danger, GSM, EDGE

Boy Genius Report is reporting (it is the Boy Genius Report, after all) that the Motorola-sourced Sidekick Slide will be getting a second variation on T-Mobile come late May or early June, this time around in a lovely shade of red to compliment the same glossy black shell as the original. We can see how the purple might be a bit intense for some folks, so red should be a decent alternative; we don't think the picture's real here, but it gets the point across. With the iD out of the picture, it seems like T-Mobile has some ramping up to do in the palette department -- and really, how much longer can we go without a Dwayne Wade LX?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

T-Mobile sends iPhone pricing through the floor in Germany

Significant reductions in handset pricing are frequently harbingers of their imminent discontinuation -- or, at the very least, a sign that the affected phones have fallen off their high horses and into midrange anonymity. Calling the iPhone "anonymous" really doesn't do it justice, admittedly, but the fact that T-Mobile Germany's new pricing plans can net you an 8GB model for a scant €99 (about $155) on contract is an interesting move any way you slice it. The blowout price is only obtainable by signing up for the "Complete XL" plan, which runs €89 a month (about $139) and includes 1,000 minutes, 300 texts, and unlimited EDGE and use of T-Mobile's WiFi hotspots. Fresh off an announcement for an April 14th release, the latest rendition of the Pearl for T-Mobile -- the WiFi-enabled 8120 -- is strutting its stuff in its natural (somewhat natural, anyway) habitat. Casual observers would have an awfully tricky time telling this apart from the Pearl 8100 of yore, but the trained eye will notice a "WiFi" logo chilling on the display and a mildly revised keypad layout here. Probably just a matter of time before T-Mobile has these bad boys in every color of the rainbow, we imagine.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

T-Mobile snags the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 on April 14th

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, T-Mobile, GSM, EDGE

April 14th -- just like we expected, that's the date T-Mobile subscribers will gain access to the WiFi totin' BlackBerry Pearl 8120. After what feels like an all-too-brief run on the low end of the Hiptop range, the colorful Sidekick iD has unceremoniously disappeared from T-Mobile's retail site. We don't have any intel on whether it's gone for good just yet -- we're working to confirm -- but tell us: was anyone out there, like, totally going to buy an iD today, only to discover (much to your horror, of course) that it had been removed? Please, do share your horror stories with us in comments while we're getting the lowdown on the situation.

[Thanks, Mike]

Update: We've heard back from T-Mobile, and it's true -- the iD is no longer being manufactured, though if you're really lucky, we understand that you still might be able to score one from a store that has some remaining stock. We don't know much of anything about these two, but as phoneArena points out, their model numbers suggest that they'll shore up T-Mobile's bottom shelf (so to speak -- we don't think T-Mobile stores really have a bottom shelf, per se). The T229 and T339 look the part, too, though we suppose the squarish T339 has a sorta stately, uptight appearance that we think could pass for a slightly higher-end device. No word on a release date or anything like that, but with any luck, we'll find out a thing or two about 'em at CTIA next week.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

T-Mobile launches BlackBerry 8820 with WiFi

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, T-Mobile, GSM, EDGE

Right on time, T-Mobile has added another piece to the smartphone side of the HotSpot@Home puzzle with the 8820, featuring both WiFi and GPS in a single package -- a somewhat rare combo from our friends at RIM, and a new, fresh answer to the 8800 and 8830 variants found on every other national carrier in the US (and, in the case of the 8800, on T-Mobile itself). The lack of a camera will be a detraction for some, but a boon for others given the device's all-business roots -- and naturally, no one's going to complain about the microSD expansion, myFaves support, or the ability to hop on 802.11g networks for a little VoIP action, T-Mobile style. As cool as the Curve? No, but this one'll find it's own audience, no question about it. Look for the BlackBerry 8820 in stores starting today.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

T-Mobile's BlackBerry Pearl 8120 looks ripe for April 14

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, T-Mobile, GSM, EDGE

Oh, T-Mobile. If only you'd kept to the original rumored date we'd heard of February 18 to release your BlackBerry Pearl 8120, you'd have been able to beat your arch nemesis AT&T out of the gate. Anyway, we suppose late is definitely better than never in this case -- and when you consider that you'll be tacking on support for your HotSpot@Home WiFi calling service, it's still a solid win for your lineup. Let's hope you can stick to the date!

[Thanks, Mumbo]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Nokia 5610 spotted with T-Mobile branding -- but which T-Mobile?

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, T-Mobile, GSM, EDGE

It looks like we all missed this little gem tucked away in the Nokia XpressMusic 5610's FCC filing when it went public last month. Yep, your eyes aren't deceiving you -- you're looking at a T-Mobile logo front and center there. Only problem is, we can't figure out which T-Mobile they're referring to. Our gut tells us it's probably the US one that we all know and love, seeing how they carry the 5300 presently, and the particular flavor of the 5610 bearing T-Mob's credentials is a straight 2.5G piece across four bands. That's right, no 1700 or 2100MHz 3G here, and seeing how European carriers like 2.5G handsets like they like pokes in the eye with a sharp stick, that pretty much settles it. Cool how we've just decided it's gotta be T-Mobile USA in the post, isn't it? No word on a release on T-Mobile divisions on either side of the Atlantic at this point, though, so we'll keep our ear to the ground.

[Via CellPhoneSignal, thanks Marco]

<a href=http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=378516&fcc_id='QTKRM-359'>Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Lowly (but 3G) Nokia 3555 hits retail for T-Mobile

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, T-Mobile, GSM, EDGE, UMTS

Right on time, the Nokia 3555 flip has come to add precisely zero spice or flair to T-Mobile's nascent 3G lineup, a ragtag group of middling phones that currently includes the Samsung t639 and t819 along with the Nokia 6263. To be fair, the $50 price on contract is plenty easy on the pocketbook, but we don't see anyone getting too excited about the VGA camera or bland styling -- and it's not like there's an expansive display here to take advantage of mobile browsing atop T-Mobile's AWS UMTS network or anything cool like that. Alas, you can get this blue bundle of joy starting today.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Ireland and Austria get iPhones, and the shaft

Filed under: Handsets, O2, T-Mobile, Apple
As we expected, Apple just loosed the iPhone into Ireland and Austria. €399 nabs the 8GB model while €499 takes the 16GB unit home. T-Mobile has the honors for Austria as it does in Germany while O2 carries the flag in Ireland as it does in the UK. Interestingly, Irish subscribers are not entitled to Visual Voicemail or free WiFi even though they are offered by O2 UK -- neither country offers an unlimited data plan. Tsk tsk. That wasn't that bad of a delay, we suppose -- if the new date holds, anyway. After an original target of March 5, we went through a brief period of sheer panic, terror, and helplessness as T-Mobile's systems appeared to indicate a new date of "TBD" for RIM's BlackBerry 8820, which isn't on any calendar, Gregorian or otherwise, that we're aware of. Anyhoo, the freshest intel appears to suggest that we can start to see 8820s circulate through retail channels on March 24. US Cellular, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile, and Helio are all named in the suit, suggesting that either the remainder of major US carriers have already licensed the technology, or this so-called Intellect Wireless just has a very bizarre way of choosing its defendants. T-Mobile gave us a quick look today at Nokia's latest clamshell, the 6550. The Series 60 phone is pretty sexy as far as Nokia flips go -- and quite the looker in its own right -- but it's still clear that Nokia's struggling to make any of its S60 units truly "skinny." The QVGA screen is naturally stellar, and the secondary display on the back includes a few capacitive touch buttons to control music playback. We also liked the main keypad, which is a bit of a departure for Nokia. The phone won't blow any minds, but it's certainly a solid play by Nokia for the budget set in Europe -- how about a little Stateside love, eh Nok?

Gallery: Nokia 6550 hands-on

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Eyes on with T-Mobile's MDA Compact IV

Filed under: Handsets, T-Mobile, Windows Mobile, HP, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA

What will it be, the good or the bad news first? How 'bout the good. After an initial rebuff, we finally managed to grab some photos of that exclusive T-Mobile MDA compact IV. You remember: 7.2Mbps HSDPA, GPS, VGA resolution screen, WiFi and 4GB of on-board storage. It'll also launch "mit neuestem Microsoft Betriebssytem" which we can safely assume is Windows Mobile 6.1 at this point. Oh yes, and the bad news. It's only a plastic dummy and our photographs were restricted by a glass cube. Still, this is as close as most of you will get for a long, long time. T-Mobile is unveiling its MDA compact IV at CeBIT this week, and despite its somewhat unassuming name, this one should command some serious attention. The HTC-sourced Windows Mobile 6 (possibly 6.1, if we're lucky) device sports full VGA resolution -- a feature that's still dismally uncommon on Western handsets -- along with a respectable 4GB of internal storage, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, quadband EDGE, Bluetooth, and WiFi; since it succeeds the Artemis-based MDA compact III, we'd reckon there's probably GPS in there, too. We'll try to catch this one in the wild as its being passed from hand to greedy hand around the T-Mobile booth in the next day or two, since it's the closest most of our American readers will ever get to it.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

T-Mobile Germany freaks out, pulls Ovi-capable Nokia phones? Reports out of Germany suggest that T-Mobile's German network has pulled all handsets capable of accessing Nokia's all-encompassing media playground, Ovi, over concerns that the service will interfere with programs T-Mobile is planning on launching itself. It's long been suspected that carriers would frown on Ovi, fearing that it'll cannibalize profits from carriers' own offerings -- but shows of support from Vodafone, TIM, and others have more recently seemed to give the whole scheme an overwhelming vote of confidence. A quick scan of T-Mobile Germany's online store reveals that the N73 and N95 are still holding it down, but yeah, that's about it as far as Nseries fare goes -- and Nokia made a point of mentioning today that its new 6550 has specific support for T-Mobile's own services. Hopefully they'll be able to get this whole spat resolved sooner rather than later, possibly by taking the Vodafone route and bundling Ovi side by side with the carrier's branded services, because we're pretty sure no carrier -- particularly a European one -- wants to go very long without offering Nokia's mainstream stuff.

[Thanks, Khattab]

Update: We've received an official statement from T-Mobile International on the matter, and in short, Ovi handsets weren't pulled because they weren't being offered to begin with. T-Mobile and Nokia are working together to figure out exactly how their respective services will be offered in the future, but yeah, we're not so worried that this is the death of Nokia on T-Mobile's German network. See the full statement after the break.
Continue reading T-Mobile Germany freaks out, pulls Ovi-capable Nokia phones? So Canada's about to swing open the doors to a new wireless competitor thanks to a massive spectrum auction being held this spring, and at least one analyst type of character -- this one with Canada's CIBC -- thinks T-Mobile might be game. Having just spread into North America relatively recently on thing wings of its Voicestream and Powertel purchases in 2001, it would be a considerably easier hop to spread north into Canada, and the analyst speculates that Deutsche Telekom could get around the country's pesky domestic ownership rules by partnering (at least initially, anyway) with a homegrown carrier. Canadians, we turn the question over to you: how would you feel about T-Mobile heading up your way?

[Via Mobile In Canada]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler
