Multiple Eseries colors certainly aren't without precedent, so we can buy that much -- and AT&T has previously launched the E62, so we can totally picture this going down. What's more, we've now heard from an independent source that the AT&T-branded E71 does in fact exist and is currently being crafted in Nokia's San Diego facilities (production models won't be born in the same place, we presume). Just a warning, guys: if this ends up happening as an EDGE-only device, we're going to lose it.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

China Mobile nabs some S60 with the Nokia 6122c

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, China Mobile
Look familiar? Even from Nokia's sole subminiature shot -- never mind the model number -- you can pretty clearly make out that the 6122c is a dead ringer for the 6124 classic introduced a couple months back. Sure enough, the fresh S60 candybar is destined for China Mobile packing pretty much the same features as its doppelganger: 2 megapixel camera, 2-inch QVGA display, microSD expansion, and an integrated FM radio. One feature that we're pretty sure won't make the cut, of course, will be UMTS / HSDPA -- both as a cost-cutting measure and the simple fact that... well, China doesn't really do those technologies. No TD-SCDMA gear yet, Nokia?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Nokia E71 getting official this week?

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS
One device conspicuously missing from Nokia's MWC and CTIA lineups this year has been the E71, the rumored successor to the E61i -- and for QWERTY S60 nerds, the next great hope. No worries, though; if the current rumor pans out, we won't have to wait for another major trade show for this thing to break cover. Dutch site Mobile Phone Helpdesk is claiming that "all arrows point" to an official launch on May 8 -- as in frickin' tomorrow. The site points out that alleged official specs have started appearing on retail sites, suggesting that Nokia's really starting to let its guard down as the ship date draws near. What are those specs, exactly? We can expect HSDPA, naturally, in addition to WiFi, a 3 megapixel cam, and an FM radio all bundled into a package that's supposedly just 10mm thick. Businessmen, businesswomen, we suggest you get your credit cards at the ready just in case this thing's suddenly available in a few hours.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Nokia's E66 and E71 in the wild!

Filed under: Handsets, Features, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Nokia fans, S60 fans, Symbian fans of all types, your attention, please! Allow us to set your hearts a-flutter with a few pictures of Nokia's latest two all-business smartphones, the rumored E66 and E71. Both models are pictured here out and about, doing what they do best -- a promising indication that we might be due for an official announcement in the not-too-distant future. We're told that both have 3.2 megapixel cameras (as expected), 128MB of memory, and as we've suspected from the few photos we've seen before, they're "sleek and sexy" in the flesh. Nokia's manufacturing processes appear to be continuing to improve, too, because we're told that the E66 feels "rugged and solid" despite the slide mechanism -- a sore spot with many an N95 owner. Whenever you want to get official with these, Nokia, that would be just fine with us, thanks!

Gallery: Nokia's E66 and E71 in the wild!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Nokia promises "a lot" more phones in the US, we say "orly"?

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian, Announcements
According to Nokia chief designer Alastair Curtis, Nokia will be offering several -- nay, a "lot" -- more products in the US very soon. "In the next few months," Curtis promised, "operators will carry a lot of new products from us." While Nokia controls 40% of the worldwide handset market, they only have a 10% share in the United States. It seems they're not happy with that and want a bigger piece of the American pie. Get this: the first North American carrier to offer up Nokia's 8GB N95 isn't AT&T. Heck, it's not even a US-based operator. No friends, it's Canada's own Rogers Wireless. Just as we had heard late last month, the N95 8GB has officially landed in the Great North, and starting on May 6th, consumers up that way will be able to secure one for a hefty $399.99 with a three-year activation on the Rogers Vision Unlimited On-Device Mobile Browsing Plan. Don't weep too heavily, AT&T users -- your time should be coming soon.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Updated SlingPlayer Mobile clients now available

Filed under: Multimedia, Software, Symbian, Windows Mobile

Remember those refreshed Sling apps we mentioned not long ago? They've finished baking and they're ready for prime time (sorry, BlackBerry users, we don't mean you -- not yet, anyway). The players for Windows Mobile, both Professional and Standard editions, now rest at version 1.6 while the S60 player gets upped to 1.1; changes are relatively minor, but notable, the Nokia N95 8GB is now officially supported (even though the old player worked pretty well) along with a slew of new WinMo pieces and set-top boxes, video quality is improved on some devices, new channel logos are included, and some "under the hood tweaks." The update is available now and free for existing SlingPlayer Mobile users; newbs, meanwhile, pay a $30 one-time pop.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Forum Nokia spills official 5320 XpressMusic specs

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Those hankering for an exhaustive rundown of the just-announced 5320 XpressMusic's specifications need not conduct their search any further. Forum Nokia, Espoo's developer outreach branch, has gone ahead and done the dirty work of dredging up the details and plopping 'em all in one place, revealing roughly 85MB of usable memory on startup (a key stat, as any heavy Symbian user can attest) atop S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2. For a phone that came out in 2006, it's kinda surprising how much interest (both from carriers and end users) that the Nokia N95 series continues to enjoy. With any luck, we'll be seeing it launch on AT&T later this year -- but Rogers is apparently poised to beat 'em to the punch. Mobile In Canada reports that Canada's 800-pound GSM behemoth intends to launch the N95 (the North American, non-8GB model, as far as we can tell) as early as May 2nd -- which, alongside the already-launched Sony Ericsson K850i, makes for a powerful one-two combo of 5 megapixel 3G Europhones. Only time will tell, but we're feeling good about this one, folks; only question is, N95 8GB next?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Is this Nokia's 7310 Classic?

While clearly not aimed at the deep-pocketed folks looking at those fancy N96s, the purported 7310 Classic makes us remember why S40 mobiles are still viable in a plethora of scenarios. Though we haven't seen anything official from Nokia, word on the street has the candybar likely checking in with a 2.2-inch QVGA display, multimedia player, built-in Bluetooth, a FM radio and some form of expansion slot. Granted, all of those specs are still speculative at the moment, but feel free to tap the read link for a few more pics and lots of rugged machine-translated conjecture.

[Via Mobile Bulgaria, thanks Momchil]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Nokia E71 sneaks into the wild once again

Nokia's having a bit of trouble keeping its E71 QWERTY business phone under wraps, with that initial sighting in January, and now another couple in-the-wild shots to keep us interested. If anything this serves confirm those previous shots, but it's nice to see some autofocus on this 3.2 megapixel puppy. We'd long since forgotten about Motorola's UIQ-based Z8 kick slider -- the introduction of the hotter, fancier Z10 pretty much sealed the deal for us there. Turns out Moto thinks there's still life left in the unusual smartphone, though, and it's taking an updated model to South Korea to prove it. The Z8m comes at a time when Motorola is looking to reassure its South Korean fans that the corporate break-up isn't going to affect its presence here, where SK Telecom continues to serve as its exclusive carrier partner; whether this is just the right phone to do it, we can't say, but we can say that we wish we'd get a version of it stateside. The headlining feature here is support for 7.2Mbps HSDPA (the original Z8 topped out at a mere 3.6Mbps) and appears to carry over the same type of UIQ setup from its predecessor -- just fine with us. Look for it to hit for around 500,000 won, which translates to just about $501.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

More shots of Sony Ericsson's still-unannounced "BeiBei"

Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Sony Ericsson's leaky enough so that we've had no problem believing that the BeiBei is dead real, but as we've seen with the M610i, a very real and very well-developed Sony Ericsson prototype by no means guarantees a release. That being said, we're starting to get pumped that this one might live long enough to see a store shelf or two -- particularly considering that it's said to rock UIQ 3.3 and looks a heck of a lot better now in its dark, handsome color scheme that the last time we saw it. The user community already had a number of hacks available for this, but you can't help but get a warm fuzzy every time a manufacturer snatches up cool functionality and bundles it into the official firmware. N95 8GB firmware v20.0.016 is now out and about, offering automatic screen rotation based on the device's in-built accelerometers (why this wasn't functional out of the box is beyond us, considering the requisite hardware was already in place) along with browser and WiFi updates. As always, we suspect this is hitting the Euro-spec N95-2 first -- but we imagine an update for the N95-4 can't be far behind.

[Via All About Symbian]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Dutch treat: Samsung surprises with three reveals

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Symbian, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, UMTS

Letting the Instinct bask in the limelight back at CTIA earlier this month, Samsung has gone and saved a three-pack of fancy new phones for Dutch show Televisie 2008 this week. First up, the U800 (pictured) is the latest Ultra Edition piece, and at 9.8mm thick, the candybar appears ready for the job -- not to say the 3.2 megapixel camera or 3G radio hurt much, either.

Next, the L870 represents Samsung's newest S60 entry, seemingly slotting in under the N95-killing G810 but still managing to offer a full 3 megapixels on the cam along with Bluetooth, 3G, and quadband GSM. Give us triband HSDPA here, Samsung, and we can be besties forever.

Finally, the long-rumored i900 finally gets some face time, looking ripe to take on LG's fashionable KS20 with UMTS (HSDPA too, if we had to wager a guess), a full 5 megapixels of shooting power, WiFi, and Windows Mobile 6.1. No word yet on when we might be seeing any of these outside the safe confines of a trade show floor, but at least we know they're all real now.

[Via Unwired View]

Read - Samsung U800
Read - Samsung L870
Read - Samsung i900

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Yet another convincing Sony Ericsson Paris pic -- open, this time

Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Man, if this phone turns out to be real, we can only imagine the cringes on the faces of Sony Ericsson execs knowing that its precious new UIQ superphone is in the process of being scooped in the most excruciatingly long, drawn-out process imaginable. The "Paris" is making yet another appearance over on se-nse, this time slid open to reveal a sliver of its QWERTY keyboard. It uses the same operating principle as the P1 and the M600, with two letters assigned to each side of each button; on the Paris, the buttons appear to be half black and half white. Could be hot, could be shockingly ugly, but we really won't know until Sony Ericsson's willing to either debunk this whole charade or give us some actual press shots.

Update: Yep, they're all black; light is reflecting off one side of the concave buttons. How boring!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

StyleTap beta for Symbian gearing up, Garnet pwnage nears completion

Filed under: Software, Palm OS, Symbian
Turning our attention away from the unobtainable iPhone version for a moment, let's take a look at something far more real that StyleTap has in the cards: Symbian support. The Palm OS emulator is already a well-worn member of the Windows Mobile community (pictured), and seeing how Symbian's got a huge installed base, it makes sense that they'd want to attack it next. There's no word on exactly what models and flavors will be supported, but it certainly seems like having a touchscreen would be a good idea -- sorry, N95 owners! The beta program kicks off May 12 and StyleTap's soliciting applications now, so head on over to the site if you have some insatiable desire to be the first kid on the block rocking all your favorite Garnet apps atop a P1i.

[Thanks, Jason]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Nokia readies iPhone-ish "Tube," disses Apple's sales

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian, Apple, OS X

It appears that Nokia is readying its official response to the iPhone, a project grossly codenamed "Tube" that will feature a touch interface. The new handset -- which is said to closely resemble Apple's device (see above, we assume) -- was shown during a slideshow at the Evans Data Developer Relations Conference in Redwood City, California. The slide demonstrated the phone's UI, including a promotional shot featuring Shrek The Third. Tom Libretto, vice president of Forum Nokia, believes that the company can compete for the iPhone's marketshare, though the phone-maker hasn't set a street date for the device. Apple has sold more than 4 million units since the iPhone's launch, but Libretto smugly noted that, "We've done that [volume] since we've had dinner on Friday," (though he failed to mention that it was 4 million low-end candybar handsets). He then put on a monocle, puffed on a Cuban cigar, and knocked back a tall glass of Cristal while chortling, "Oh, I do say!"

[Thanks, Alex]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Another shot of Sony Ericsson's Paris?

Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, Symbian

Okay, seriously, Sony Ericsson, it seems pretty clear-cut that your closely held secrets have leaked out into the public domain here -- either that, or there's a pretty extensive conspiracy in the user community to fleece everyone with similar-looking fake shots -- and either way, it's about time you step forward and clear the air. This here is the latest shot of the so-called Paris that's floating around the interwebs, and while the screen looks more fake than ever, the phone itself matches up nicely with what we've seen before. With UIQ 3.3 in the cards, this could be the phone that finally takes the "other" Symbian platform from niche to glamor and glory, but only if the mothership can get it released in a timely fashion. We meandered through Nokia's booth at CTIA Wireless last week in search of interesting wares, and came back with pretty positive results. Granted, nothing starting with "N" or "E" was announced at the show -- unless you count the N810 WiMAX Edition, which we don't -- but there was still plenty of unreleased kit at the show, including the N78, the 6210 Navigator, and a pair of really sleek CDMA flips. Speaking of the CDMA flips, the 1606 and 3606 headlined Nokia's CTIA intros -- and we've gotta admit, we were surprisingly pleased with the hardware. The designs are beautiful, smooth, clean, slim, and unlike anything we've seen out of Espoo in the past; they're worthy efforts for a company that pays very little mind to the world of CDMA, and a merciful sign that the painful Pantech partnership era appears to be over. And when we say "salivating uncontrollably," we mean like to the point that they're unable to present themselves in social situations because there's just this really disgusting stream of spittle constantly flowing out of their mouths. Got that visual? Okay, now check it: the blog is reporting that the Paris will sport a touchscreen display (capacitive, it seems), a semi-QWERTY keypad in the same vein as the M600 and P1, WiFi, 3G (maybe in a global flavor for once?), GPS, and preinstalled Google Maps, all sitting atop UIQ 3.3. Quite frankly, we're still recovering from Garmin's onslaught of GPS navigation systems at CES, but just as those last mental wounds were healing, along comes the outfit to drop yet another bomb. This time, Garmin's taking CTIA hostage and announcing a veritable smorgasbord of application upgrades and partnerships. Up first is an upgrade to Garmin Mobile, which promises to bring a new interface and Google Local search to a variety of BlackBerry, Symbian and WinMo handsets. Continuing on, we're also hearing that Garmin GPS owners can "now send locations found on Google Maps" and MapQuest, select Samsung handset owners can grab hold of Mobile Navigator and Garmin Mobile now plays nice with nTelos' lineup of BREW-enabled devices. Thirsty for more?
PhoneMag is reporting on a post at the Esato forums that mentions the N96 may well be getting itself an update before it even hits the shelves -- this is a bit friend of a friend stuff, so please think rumor while reading. Word has it that the lowly LED flash is being replaced with a Xenon number which has some advantages in low-light situations -- such as useful pictures. Of course, there's always a rub, the dual-LED version that's being replaced could have been useful for shooting video and its replacement isn't going to fill that void -- and is a wee bit more power hungry. We guess we won't know 'til Nokia lets us know, but we'll do our best to shake an answer out of them next week in Las Vegas. Feel free to chime in with your thoughts on which flash would make you the happiest N96 owner -- or, perhaps we could have both please Nokia?

[Via PhoneMag]

Mere mortals will need to wait until the third quarter of the year -- if not longer, depending on their region and tolerance for some probable price gouging in the early going -- to get their hands on the mighty Nokia N96. On the other hand, Mobile-review apparently knows the right hands to shake and eyes to wink to get hold of a prototype unit extraordinarily early, and they're taking full advantage of the opportunity. A few hours of your time devoted to the novella of a review will net you a deep understanding and appreciation for the N96's strengths and follies, but in a nutshell, the site seems to come away with a pretty ambivalent opinion of a device that should be knocking everyone's socks off -- especially for a sticker price that'll hover in the $800 arena. Problems included a penchant for picking up dirt and fingerprints (the price you pay for a beautiful glossy face, we suppose), a cramped nav key layout with the tricky touch-sensitive Navi Wheel front and center, audio performance that wasn't bad but was expected to be far better in light of the dedicated DSP, and a "shovel"-like feel in the hand, a symptom of the phone's generous dimensions. Everyone owes the production version of the N96 a chance to show its true form when it's released later this year -- and hey, at least Nokia's got a checklist of things that need improvement in the prototype now -- so we're keeping our chins up that this'll still make the N95 8GB a proud daddy when it comes time to hand over the crown to the Nseries kingdom.

[Via Tech Digest and NokNok]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

UIQ 3.3 announced

Ahead of CTIA -- and ahead of a possible Windows Mobile 6.1 announcement -- UIQ Technology has announced that UIQ 3.3, based on a Symbian 9.3 foundation, is now available to manufacturers. It's not a revolutionary build by any stretch of the imagination; in fact, the firm itself says that it includes "incremental enhancements" designed to keep up with changing requirements in the marketplace. Headlining features include Opera 9.5, support for Opera Widgets (widgets do seem to be the rage in mobile these days), and a dedicated widget "dashboard" for managing the little bits and pieces of content the user is tracking. The 3.3 SDK is already available, so with any luck, we should see devices in the marketplace before the century's out.

Gallery: UIQ 3.3 announced

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Symbian 9.2 hacked to bypass app certification

App certificates have long been a bane to S60 users and developers alike, causing pain, frustration, and an almost obligatory cash outlay to get your hard work certified to run on the very platform Nokia is so quick to call "open." Finally, it truly is, thanks to the hard work of the Symbian hacking community that has developed an easy (or easy sounding, anyway) method of "jailbreaking" the Symbian 9.2 device in your life (S60 3rd Edition FP1 users, that's you). After that, installed apps won't need a certificate at all -- let alone an invalid one -- to do their dirty work. Open, indeed.

[Via Part-Time Phone Reviewer, thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Picture of N95 with touch UI leaves us confused, hot with passion

So Mobile Review's got its Sony Ericsson G700 review up in all its epic, War & Peace-style glory that the site is so well known for. Don't get us wrong, that's all well and good; it's an interesting phone and there's no question that we'll get around to reading the sucker from beginning to end in the near future. What really has our immediate attention, though, is one of the test photos taken with the G700's camera depicting some sort of touch user interface on a Nokia N95. Judging from everything we've seen of Nokia's own S60 touch UI, we can say with confidence that this ain't it; besides, the N95's design language is dead (just take one hard look at the N96 to confirm it) so we can't imagine some future device out of Espoo retrofitting a touchscreen onto an N95's shell. So what's going on here? Even if it's a third-party program, it can't work. It just can't. Or can it?

[Via Perpetuum Smoking Mobile]

Update: Turns out this is from the new Knight Rider series. Cars with Mac keyboards, modified N95s with touchscreens -- what other implausible goodies do these guys get? Our sights are sort of irreparably set on the N78 and N96 at this point, but let's not forget a killer handset out of Espoo that's already launched, already available at retail, and holds its own in the technical arena: the N82. The 5 megapixel Nseries badass offers a candybar alternative to the N95, thanks to a 5 megapixel autofocus camera that's ready to take the place of your average point-and-shoot -- and the xenon flash actually one-ups the N95's weakling LED unit. We really liked the original pearlescent white when we saw it in the flesh with our very own eyes, but if you simply must have something just a little meaner looking, consider this: black. Yep, the N82's been relaunched in a rather menacing gloss black, and even better, it comes preloaded with the model's latest firmware that offers photo geotagging out of the box thanks to the phone's integrated GPS receiver. Grab it now for €400 (about $618).

[Via MobileBurn]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

More dual-SIM wares on the way from Samsung

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Symbian, Windows Mobile, GSM

As cool as the concept of the Samsung DuoS D880 might be, there's a big problem: it runs in the $700 range at retail. Russian site Smape recently sat down with Samsung's mobile chief for the region, and he plainly admitted that the high cost of the D880's admission is leaving out a large segment of the dual-SIM market -- folks who are looking to minimize costs by using different providers depending on who they're calling -- and the company's looking to address that in the second quarter by adding another DuoS model, the P240 candybar. The new piece is expected to cost 20 to 30 percent less than the D880 while still offering its most important feature -- the two SIM slots, that is -- along with Bluetooth, a microSD slot, and a 220 x 176 display. The rep also mentioned that a WinMo-powered DuoS is in the works for this year, and Symbian's on their radar as well -- though probably not before 2008's out. Samsung had previously shown a DuoS-based version of the Armani, too, but it looks like that's now off the table because they found that managing two SIMs proved difficult with a touchscreen; we personally think we could've managed, but whatevs.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Google Maps for mobile gets native on UIQ

There you go, now all you UIQ3 types can finally raise your mobiles and celebrate a bit of native love by way of Google Maps for mobile designed specifically for your devices.
Well, it looks like we're now one step closer to a full-fledged launch of Nokia's N-Gage First Access service, with the company announcing today that the beta testing phase will end on March 27th. As was announced before, that means all your scores and other data will be reset and, while you won't have to repurchase any games you've bought during the beta test, you will have to reinstall them when the final version launches. As a bonus for beta testers, however, Nokia is giving away a free copy of the upcoming Mile High Pinball game to anyone that completes a survey, along with 1,000 "community points." There's still no firm word on the rollout of the final version of the service, however, with Nokia only going so far as to say that it's coming in the "next few weeks."

[Via All About Symbian]

It's not every day that a manufacturer makes a conscientious effort to keep an older product in feature lockstep with the new, so our hats (and hearts) go out to Nokia for this latest round of love. The original Nokia N95, the European N95-1, has started getting blessed with firmware v21, which brings it in line with the N95 8GB's recent update to offer Flash Lite 3, in-browser Flash, and a host of performance and stability improvements. It seems that folks are still having limited success getting the new update via Nokia's software update app, but it's starting to trickle out there. North American N95 owners, though -- well, as you can probably guess, you're left out in the cold for the time being.

[Via Boy Genius Report and Nokia Users, thanks Jonathan]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

New SlingPlayer Mobile versions on the way

Filed under: Multimedia, Software, Symbian, Windows Mobile
Great news, you placeshifting fiends of the world: we've learned that Sling Media is hard at work crafting new versions of its SlingPlayer Mobile for S60, Windows Mobile Standard, and Windows Mobile Professional devices. The gist of the updates will be to better support newer handsets on all three platforms; specifically, one improvement we've heard mentioned is that full-screen video will look better on the N95 8GB's huge (by S60 standards, anyway) display. We've tested full-screen Slinged content on the N95 8GB and we personally think it looks great as it is, so it'll be interesting to see just how good they can get it. Look for the new releases to pop up this spring.

Separately, Sling tells us that development on its SlingPlayer for BlackBerry devices is still coming along swimmingly, and they're targeting a release some time this year. In fact, the company actually demoed the player on an AT&T 8800 and a T-Mobile Curve at MWC last month, so we figure that's got to be a good sign.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

FCC approves Nokia N78's North American 3G version, too

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Finally, we can all collectively get a good night's sleep. There were some brief moments of discomfort at Engadget HQ last week when we discovered a completely 3G-less version of the Nokia N78 in the FCC's labs; we'd heard after the fact that it was destined for China, but there's still a little bit of that queasy, sick-to-your-stomach feeling until you see the true North American 3G version we were promised at MWC with your own two eyes (come on, don't even front like you haven't felt that before). Well, here ya go -- the SAR report for the RM-342 (an internal model number, of course) verifies that HSDPA is present on both the 850 and 1900MHz bands this time around, so we can get back to our daily lives and routines in peace until it finally launches later this year. Carry on.

<a href=http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=551296&fcc_id='QFXRM-342'>Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Carphone Warehouse floats August 2008 for Nokia N96 launch

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA
Yeah, we know, this one's a pretty monstrous stretch, but we are so stoked about Nokia's N96 that we figured you'd be just as happy as we are to get some news -- and by news, we mean hopeful rumor. Like the Samsung U740 on Verizon, AT&T's Nokia N75 is a workhorse that's been kicking around for a good, long while now. It's a serviceable S60 device -- the very first released with North American UMTS, in fact -- but it's lived its useful shelf life at this point and probably should be put out to pasture, preferably with a few shreds of dignity left intact. It seems AT&T has distinctly different plans for the phone, though, following Verizon's curious renaming buffoonery by christening the N75 the "Tab Top." What does "Tab Top" mean, you ask? We're not totally sure, but AT&T says the feature of the same name "gives you easy access to the most commonly used device functionality without using the menu." We thought S60's Active Standby sorta did this already, but hey, if AT&T wants to get all fancy on us and call it Tab Top, more power to 'em, we guess.

[Thanks, Alex]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

North American Nokia N95 8GB now available

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

We just got a call from our friendly local Nokia flagship store, and lo, it seems the mythical N95 8GB with HSDPA 850 / 1900 is now in stock. The European flavor of Nokia's N78 -- the one bearing the very un-American 900 and 2100MHz WCDMA radios -- just hit the wire, and while there's nothing much going on here that we didn't already know from Nokia's reveal at MWC, we did notice a sentence in the SAR report that has us just a little concerned. And we quote: "The difference between RM-236 and RM-235 is that RM-236 has had WCDMA900, WCDMA2100 and WLAN2450 components removed." In other words, Nokia appears to be making reference to a version of the N78 that has no American 3G (no 3G whatsoever, in fact) and no WiFi, and that's a version we want nothing to do with. What gives, Nokia?

Update: As several folks have stated, this particular N78 is destined for the Chinese market, where HSDPA doesn't really, how should we put this... apply. The N78 with North American 3G is still very much a go.
