It seems the masses have abandoned the need to take blurry prototype shots, as the pics we're seeing of the Paris are all crystal clear. The device is touted -- by a forum user, so take it with a healthy dose of salt -- as having A-GPS,a 5 megapixel camera, 2.6-inch display, Google Maps, rocker QWERTY keypad, and a very vanilla design aesthetic. The forum user who took the pics, gliatiotis, also chimes in that he was pretty humdrum about the handset, with the major complaint being that the hardware isn't advancing in this line. The drums seem to be beating louder each day on this phone, so we're hoping release to the masses might be just around the corner. Follow the link to get at a pile more pics.

[Via SlashPhone]

It looks like your future digital camera could have considerably more wireless options than built-in WiFi or an Eye-Fi card, at least if Sony Ericsson has its way. As Unwired View reports, the company has filed a number patent applications that detail its plans to add various wireless connectivity options to digital cameras, including GSM, CDMA, and WiMAX, in addition to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. That would apparently come both in the form of wireless cards built into the cameras themselves, and in the form of wireless adapters or docks that would attach to the camera, with some dedicated flash memory also thrown in for storing settings for Flickr and the like. Of course, there's no indication as to when we can expect to see such cameras and, as Unwired View points out, the idea itself may not be the most patentable, but you can sign us up for any connectivity option that doesn't involve a tangled mess of cords in our gadget bag.

While we're sure there's at least a few folks that'll be pleased to hear that Sony Ericsson's eagerly-anticipated XPERIA X1 will launch with Handango's InHand service on the device, we're guessing there's a tad more people that'll be interested in the other little detail revealed in the company's recent newsletter: that the X1 will apparently be launching in mid-September. Of course, we'll still have to wait to hear from Sony Ericsson to know for sure, especially given some of the launch date confusion in the past, but this latest word is at least in line with the company's most recent statement that the X1 launching in the second half of 2008, so it might not be such a crazy idea to start counting down the days.

In a move meant to, uh, distract investors from its announced 48% profit downturn (compared to Q1 of the previous year), Sony Ericsson just announced a pair of mid-range handsets. The Z780 clamshell -- now official -- is the global sister to the announced Z770 for Europe. As such, she comes packing UMTS/HSDPA 850/1900/2100 and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE radios. While it comes loaded with Google Maps for Mobile and aGPS navigation, you won't get much use from it on that itty bitty 128 x 160 pixel display of unknown dimensions. Hell, that bezel chews up an equivalent amount of real estate. The G502 candybar also features Maps but lacks aGPS. No worries for US Americans though as it's likely to stay put in Europe with UMTS/HSDPA 2100 and GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900/1800/1900 radios. Both will feature M2 memory expansion, Bluetooth, and 2 megapixel cameras when they launch in "selected markets" come Q2. Anyone hoping for another UIQ-based superphone can avert their eyes right now, but otherwise, hold on -- Sony Ericsson might just be onto something with its upcoming G502. The sleek black candybar should freshen the dead center of SE's lineup with a QVGA display, 2 megapixel camera, HSDPA, Memory Stick M2-expandable storage, and the NetFront browser that's become a hallmark of Sony Ericsson's better non-smartphone devices. Rumor has it it'll get official on the 24th -- just two short days from now -- so get your popcorn ready, or whatever it is that you and your family do when you're gathering around the computer in anticipation of a new handset announcement.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

More shots of Sony Ericsson's still-unannounced "BeiBei"

Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Sony Ericsson's leaky enough so that we've had no problem believing that the BeiBei is dead real, but as we've seen with the M610i, a very real and very well-developed Sony Ericsson prototype by no means guarantees a release. That being said, we're starting to get pumped that this one might live long enough to see a store shelf or two -- particularly considering that it's said to rock UIQ 3.3 and looks a heck of a lot better now in its dark, handsome color scheme that the last time we saw it.
We saw the Sony Ericsson Z770i a little while back and now a mild refresh arriving in the form of this lovely bit of flip-candy called the Z780i. SEMC Blog outed this handset's WAP profile recently and now they've brought us a few thumbnails of what appears to be a Z770i twin but with a more reasonable looking keypad. There aren't many details to spare aside from what you can see above but there do seem to be profiles for both 'a' and 'i' models -- with 'a' bringing us some frequencies in the 3G range that'll we'll be able to enjoy over here. That's it for now kids, but we'll be back with more info as soon as we hear about it.

Read - WAP profile for Z780i
Read - WAP profile for Z780a

[Via SEMC Blog]

Man, if this phone turns out to be real, we can only imagine the cringes on the faces of Sony Ericsson execs knowing that its precious new UIQ superphone is in the process of being scooped in the most excruciatingly long, drawn-out process imaginable. The "Paris" is making yet another appearance over on se-nse, this time slid open to reveal a sliver of its QWERTY keyboard. It uses the same operating principle as the P1 and the M600, with two letters assigned to each side of each button; on the Paris, the buttons appear to be half black and half white. Could be hot, could be shockingly ugly, but we really won't know until Sony Ericsson's willing to either debunk this whole charade or give us some actual press shots.

Update: Yep, they're all black; light is reflecting off one side of the concave buttons. How boring!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Another shot of Sony Ericsson's Paris?

Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, Symbian

Okay, seriously, Sony Ericsson, it seems pretty clear-cut that your closely held secrets have leaked out into the public domain here -- either that, or there's a pretty extensive conspiracy in the user community to fleece everyone with similar-looking fake shots -- and either way, it's about time you step forward and clear the air. This here is the latest shot of the so-called Paris that's floating around the interwebs, and while the screen looks more fake than ever, the phone itself matches up nicely with what we've seen before. With UIQ 3.3 in the cards, this could be the phone that finally takes the "other" Symbian platform from niche to glamor and glory, but only if the mothership can get it released in a timely fashion. That's you, Sony Ericsson, so get to it.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Specs revealed of the real (or fake) Sony Ericsson "Paris"

Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

se-nse is spilling some more beans on its supposed leak of the P5 "Paris" smartphone, and put simply, UIQ fans are (or should be) salivating uncontrollably right now. And when we say "salivating uncontrollably," we mean like to the point that they're unable to present themselves in social situations because there's just this really disgusting stream of spittle constantly flowing out of their mouths. Got that visual? Okay, now check it: the blog is reporting that the Paris will sport a touchscreen display (capacitive, it seems), a semi-QWERTY keypad in the same vein as the M600 and P1, WiFi, 3G (maybe in a global flavor for once?), GPS, and preinstalled Google Maps, all sitting atop UIQ 3.3. The same week that Nokia Siemens Networks unveiled its LTE solution for North America comes a little nugget from Ericsson: the M700. Hailed as the "world's first commercially available LTE-capable platform," it promises peak data transmissions of 100Mbps down and 50Mbps up, which will undoubtedly be the next best thing since sliced bread. Reportedly, initial devices based on the unit will be ExpressCards, USB modems, etc., and of course, it supports bandwidths between 1.4 and 20MHz and the oh-so-exciting 700MHz bands. Unfortunately, a commercial release isn't set to happen until 2009 -- with products "based on the platform" not scheduled until 2010 -- but to its credit, samples of ASICs will be ready to roll sometime this year.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Is this Sony Ericsson's P5 or "Paris"?

Ahhh, Sony Ericsson rumors begin to swirl just as CTIA is getting set to close up shop for another year, and if you believe 'em, the P5 or "Paris" is just around the corner. We have to admit, while pretty, the pic of this little slider does look a bit sketchy -- specially the screen -- but we've heard rumblings about similar sets for long enough we can at least take a moment to hope. Apparently featuring UIQ 3.3, the P5 is rumored to be set for official launch in May with release date set for fall. Of course, Sony Ericsson is well known for slipping the dates in a big way, so we'll just lay back and wait to see what's what.

[Thanks, Kevin and Kaloyan]

We're still smarting from the apparent cancelation of the fabulously powerful K850 from AT&T's 2008 lineup, but as consolation prizes go, the Z750a ain't bad. That being said, it's solidly seated in the midrange, which seems like an unusual place for Sony Ericsson's very first carrier-launched 3G handset for the US to be; the 2 megapixel camera isn't going to "wow" anyone, and the choice of colorful, ultra-gloss shells definitely limits the phone's appeal to a certain demographic. On the bright side, the music player has an XMB appeal to it -- users of other recent Sony Ericssons will feel right at home with the app -- and it's one of the better built-in players currently available on any handset. The Memory Stick Micro slot makes that player just a little trickier to use for anyone that isn't already using Sony Ericsson kit, but c'est la vie, we suppose. Check out some shots in our handy dandy gallery here.

Gallery: Hands-on with the Sony Ericsson Z750a for AT&T

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sony Ericsson Z750a coming to AT&T in early April

Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, ATT, GSM, EDGE, UMTS

It's not a surprise, but it's still overwhelmingly refreshing to see Sony Ericsson finally (and we do mean finally) bringing some 3G action onto AT&T. The "a" variant of the glossy, colorful Z750 clamshell will be hitting AT&T in an official capacity come early April, featuring an OLED external display cleverly concealed by the phone's translucent shell, a 2 megapixel camera and media player both backed up with Memory Stick Micro M2 expansion, stereo Bluetooth, and of course, that lovely HSDPA 850 / 1900 that's eluded Sony Ericsson's AT&T offerings for far, far too long. Look for it to go out the door for $49.99 after a $100 rebate.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Ericsson set to demo 42 Mbps end-to-end HSPA Evolution technology

Filed under: Sony Ericsson, HSDPA, HSUPA
Apparently not content to let Nokia Siemens have the upgraded mobile broadband spotlight to itself today, Ericsson has now announced that it's set to demonstrate what it's touting as the "world-first end-to-end HSPA Evolution technology" at CTIA next week. That, the company says, should allow for speeds up to an impressive 42 Mbps, a feat made apparently possible by a combination of higher order modulation technology (64QAM) and 2x2 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna technology. As for the actual demonstration, Ericsson is only going so far as to say that it'll be conducted with an unspecified "handheld form-factor device" that's based on the Ericsson Mobile Platforms access technology. Other details are unsurprisingly pretty light at the moment, but we're betting Ericsson will have plenty more to say about it when they actually light things up at CTIA.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Donald Melanson

AT&T release dates through May (hint: no Vu)

Filed under: Handsets, Features, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, UTStarcom, ATT, Palm OS, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS
We've just received a fresh round of release dates on AT&T, and if we had to pick a single word to describe the theme here, it'd be "colors." Shades upon shades of phones -- both new and old -- will see a release on AT&T in the next couple of months, starting with the Sony Ericsson Z750a, the first 3G Sony Ericsson to be released by a carrier in the States (but not in North America -- that honor belongs to Rogers); it'll hit in your choice of gray, pink, or purple in early April. Finally, May should bring about the LG CU720 Shine in black, following its initial offerings of silver and red.

Oh, and it looks like the Motorola Z9 and the black Centro should be widely available pretty much any minute now -- stay tuned. Strangely missing from the list is the Vu, though that doesn't necessarily mean it won't be released by the end of May, it merely means that AT&T's not sure yet.
CTIA approaches, we expect rumors to swirl and almost right on cue Sony Ericsson's leaky faucet drips out a couple shots of an upcoming set codenamed "Emelie" appear. Not much is known about this set except that it is finished in metal -- oooh, ahhh -- packs a 2 megapixel camera, sports a QVGA screen, and may end up in the $200 - $300 range. The handset's description also mentions 18 keys inside the case -- so clamshell format is likely -- and that said keys are "curvy and sparkly." Here's hoping Sony Ericsson are set to bust out some new fun at the show next week, and if the offering is anything like Mobile World Congress this year, we can hope for an armload -- though, it's not likely.

For its part, Sony Ericsson sent a note out that it's going to fall well short of analysts' projections of 26 million handsets shipped in the first quarter of '08, coming in closer to 22 million; Nokia meanwhile has said that it saw a mere 3 percent growth in the European market in 2007, compared to a whopping 16 percent in 2006. The proverbial silver lining on the cloud might be that manufacturers are seeing plenty of new business in emerging markets in the Asia Pacific region, so they have a safe haven to protect some profit if the rest of the world's economies fall apart for the next year or two.

[Via PHONE Magazine]

Read - Sony Ericsson warns of soft results
Read - Nokia says European mobile phone growth fell in '07

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

XPERIA X1 white paper reveals yet more details

There certainly hasn't been any shortage of XPERIA X1 details to emerge since the desirable device was first announced back in February, but those still looking for something to whet their appetite until they can actually get their hands on one can now get their fix courtesy of a new white paper released by Sony Ericsson, which packs a bundle of interesting new tidbits. That includes details on the pre-loaded XPERIA panels, along with word of DLNA-compatible media sharing via ActiveSync or WiFi, details on the video recording options (30fps MPEG-4 and30fps H.263, both VGA), and confirmation that the only browser included will be Internet Explorer. Also according to the white paper, you can expect Google Maps and Java ME to be installed by default, and you'll get Exchange Direct Push email built-in, with setup wizards provided for Gmail, Yahoo, and Live Hotmail. What's more, as Inxperia points out, there is also a noticeable lack of 1700MHz support, although we doubt that'll be a deal-breaker for too many folks.

Okay, first, a word of caution: we've heard some conflicting reports that the K850 may have been canceled from AT&T's roadmap because it missed its "launch window." That being said, this poster -- spotted in an actual retail location, not deep in an AT&T workshop somewhere -- sure makes us believe it's still very much in the works. Come on, guys, you're not going to let Rogers show you up, are you?

Also, what's this business about "video phone" and "video calls"? Sounds an awful lot like honest-to-goodness two-way video instead of that whole Video Share thing, doesn't it?

[Thanks, brainsonthemonitor]

Update: Several sources at AT&T stores have told us that they've been commanded by corporate to toss their K850 promotional materials in the trash. Doesn't sound like a good sign, and if the device is indeed canceled, we think it's a tragedy both for AT&T and for Sony Ericsson's North American presence.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Ericsson exec sees WiFi hotspots becoming the new telephone booths

While it hardly comes as much of a surprise, Ericsson Chief Marketing Officer Johan Bergendahl is now predicting nothing short of the demise of WiFi hotspots, and he's saying that they'll be replaced by -- you guessed it -- mobile broadband. Speaking at a conference in Stockholm, Bergendahl said that "hot spots at places like Starbucks are becoming the telephone boxes of the broadband era," and that "in a few years, [HSPA] will be as common as Wi-Fi is today." Leading to that widespread use, he says, is ever-decreasing prices for mobile broadband subscriptions, and the fact that HSPA is being built into more and more laptops. Of course, if other companies have their way, WiFi hotspots could become a thing of the past simply because entire cities would effectively be one huge hotspot, although we'd gladly take both options.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Donald Melanson

Sony Ericsson withdrawing from NTT DoCoMo, sort of

What the heck is going on here? Despite the overwhelming popularity of gizmo-heavy mobile devices in Japan, working with megacarrier NTT DoCoMo must be a losing proposition for many of its manufacturing partners, because just days after Mitsubishi's announcement of its withdrawal, a fresh Nikkei report indicates that Sony Ericsson is raising the white flag as well to divert attention and resources to less saturated and more profitable markets. Apparently, DoCoMo will bear the brunt of the downsizing, while Sony Ericsson's partnership with KDDI -- a CDMA carrier -- will continue. [Warning: subscription required]

Update: It turns out that Sony Ericsson intends to continue working with DoCoMo by initially delivering new models through mid '08, at which point it will start buying handsets from other manufacturers and rebranding them. In other countries this would be truly egregious, but as our Japanese bureau points out, DoCoMo lays out very strict requirements for each of its lines that would probably make it difficult to distinguish a true Sony Ericsson model from a rebranded model sourced from, say, Sharp or Toshiba.

Update 2: Sony Ericsson's Japanese PR folks have denied Nikkei's report, although they did mention that they are "reevaluating" their DoCoMo line without going into any detail. Whether the report was actually false or Nikkei just managed to out the info well before Sony Ericsson wanted it out, though, remains unclear.

Update 3: The official Sony Ericsson response, and while it says that they're taking a good, hard look at their DoCoMo business, it also mentions that they'll continue to develop new handsets for the carrier. It's nice to know that Sony Ericsson is plugging away on making our crazy, dare-to-dream fantasies a reality. The latest proof that someone up there (and by up there, we mean Japan) likes us comes in the form of a new patent for a touchscreen handheld that forgoes physical buttons for a haptic-feedback scheme. The design mandates that the phone / game device would be free of the pesky clutter of regular buttons, and would instead by configurable to any number of forms (PSP, phone, MP3 player, digital camera) by arrangement of on-screen controls. The device would vibrate in accordance with button-presses, though it's unclear whether this will just be a standard vibration, or a more advanced, location-specific feedback system. Even with a little buzz, we're not quite sure you can replicate the feeling real gaming controls provide -- and that could seriously interfere with our typical success in games.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

XPERIA X1 shows AT&T graphic at CeBIT -- what could it possibly mean?

Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

So it seems the X1 being shown off at CeBIT following its MWC debut last month is equipped with a particularly curious panel in its software load. Anyone care to take a guess? No cheating and looking at the one we've circled now. Yeah, okay, it's that big AT&T logo front and center, which makes an appearance in several of PHONE Magazine's shots of the interface. We'd like to believe that means that AT&T is a lock to pick up one of the hottest Windows Mobile devices ever manufactured, and indeed, it probably does -- its 3G radio is certainly ripe for the job -- but it's entirely possible to think that Sony Ericsson is still in the process of selling carriers on the device, and is simply trying to get 'em to crack a smile by loading their logo. Keep your fingers crossed, ladies and gentlemen.

[Thanks, Jake]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Eyes-on with the teensy Sony Ericsson T303

Filed under: Handsets, Features, Sony Ericsson, GSM

Here's the story: this Sony Ericsson T303 is a tiny one. Like, really small. We spotted it behind glass at the Sony Ericsson booth here at CeBIT, and we could easily see it becoming a top fashionista pick. Unfortunately, the paltry specs are going to divert all but the staunchest supporters of fashion minimalism. We're also a little confused why Sony Ericsson still hasn't replaced that generic "SE 123" logo the phone was sporting when we first saw it in February. Forget to pay the sticker guy? Perhaps we'll never know.

Gallery: Eyes-on with the teensy Sony Ericsson T303

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Sony Ericsson turns T303 slider into reality

Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, GSM

Whoa, no EDGE? That's a surefire sign that Sony Ericsson is targeting the very bottom end of the market with its just-introduced T303 slider, a phone we saw in classic "SE123" form just recently. That seems a bit at odds with the fact that the phone's exterior is mostly constructed of chrome and metal, but we're guessing buyers aren't going to argue too much with that. Features include an integrated FM radio, 8MB of memory, a 160 x 128 display, Bluetooth, and a 1.3 megapixel camera in two flavors depending on which three GSM band combo you'd rather have. Look for it to launch in "mid 2008" for a price to be set by your local distributor -- but expect it to be cheap.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sony Ericsson says XPERIA X1 is still on track for this year

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Sony Ericsson

It looks like those eagerly waiting to get their hands on Sony Ericsson's HTC-made XPERIA X1 can rest a little easier, as the much anticipated apparently is still on track for release in the second half of this year, and not in February 2009 as recently rumored. That word comes straight from Sony Ericsson Corporate Vice President of the Global Communications Aldo Liguori, who told the Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog that "I can confirm that we will be launching the X1 product in 2nd Half of 2008, as per our announcement of 10th February." That sure is about as definitive as you can get, though we're guessing there's plenty of folks out there that think any date other than tomorrow is too long to wait.

A table of release dates dug up on Sony Ericsson's own site suggests something powerfully depressing, which is that the XPERIA X1 has been pushed all the way out to February 10, 2009 (notice that the date is in European format -- we'd just give up now if it were actually October 2, 2009). While the presence of the page on the company's very own domain is pretty damning evidence, we're still holding out hope that it's a typo or an oversight; late Q2 of '08 was mentioned at MWC, and we really don't see how it's possible to push out a phone nearly three-quarters of a year just weeks after its initial announcement. Please tell us we're right on this one, Sony Ericsson. Please.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

A look at AT&T's pipeline, early March 2008 edition

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Pantech, Sony Ericsson, ATT, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

We've already mentioned that the LG Vu is looking solid for a late March release after being held up (or so they say, anyway) to work through a few MediaFLO issues; we've now received independent confirmation that it's true -- assuming no more issues arise, of course -- but that's not all. No, far from it, in fact. The Sony Ericsson Z750 is apparently inbound for a release within two weeks, and along with the rugged Motorola W760 "Hurricane" (pictured), that should close out AT&T's March docket.

Moving on to April and beyond, the Pantech "Breeze" is expected some time next month, but don't get too excited -- it's an entry level flip that should move out the door free on contract. The Motorola Z9 slider should lackadaisically stroll into stores in late April, and finally, we've heard that the Nokia N95 has been approved by the carrier's powers that be (!!!) and should be available in the second quarter; no word on whether it's the standard N95 or the N95 8GB, though. How about an N96 with MediaFLO while you're at it, guys?

[Thanks, Kal]

Update: We've just heard from another tipster that the N95 in question is the original for the North American market, the N95-3. It apparently just started going through the arduous approval process last week, a testing marathon that takes roughly 400 hours -- four to six months -- to complete. By then, we'll all have 4G radios embedded directly within our brains and be living in terraformed colonies on Mars, but it was a nice thought on AT&T's part nonetheless.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Nokia about rumored PSP phone: can Sony Ericsson really pull it off?

Filed under: Games, Handsets, Software, Nokia, Sony Ericsson

It seems that several years of taking their lumps on the long road to mobile gaming success has hardened the boys and girls at Nokia just a bit, and they're ready to come out swinging. The target? Fellow European manufacturer Sony Ericsson, of course, which has been rumored for eons to be cooking up some sort of PlayStation- or PSP-branded handset to go head to head with the likes of Nokia's N-Gage service. The head of Nokia's games division went on the assault at a recent press event for its brand spanking new N-Gage client, saying "I'm not scared about anybody. The real question is how do they do it? Can they create a link between the PSP games and a phone? Can they do the multiplayer and online stuff? We've been doing this for two years and it hasn't been easy." In other words: bring it, Sony Ericsson, because we don't think you can do it. Kind of funny to be lashing out against a product that hasn't been announced (much less launched) though.

[Via Tech Digest]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Some new Sony Ericsson slider in the wild?

A handful of pictures leaked on SE4M's forums suggest that a new slider might be in the labs for Sony Ericsson, badged with the classic "SE123" designation shared by all the company's official prototypes -- many of which have been leaked well ahead of release in recent memory, so we see no reason why another couldn't escape. Here's the thing, though: doesn't this one look awfully un-Sony Ericsson-like? Admittedly, the classic SE design language is getting a little long in the tooth, but this particular unit looks like a pretty drastic departure from everything we've seen recently, right up to the blockbuster announcements at MWC. Since looking around your car to read a small display while you're driving seems like a somewhat poor plan, Sony Ericsson has introduced the HCB-150 that clips to a visor and reads out the caller's name with a (hopefully non-creepy) text-to-speech engine in addition to a more traditional OLED readout if you simply must take your eyes off the road. It supports up to five pairings, uses Bluetooth 2.0, is battery powered for double duty as a portable speakerphone, and should be available next quarter.

[Via PHONE Magazine]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sony Ericsson files patent app for self-improving phone projectors

We imagine that when micro projectors in cellphones are finally mainstream (if they do, in fact, ever become mainstream), people are going to be shooting 'em onto all sorts of bizarre surfaces that you'd normally never dream of shooting a projected image onto. Enter Sony Ericsson, which intends to make that reality just a little less painful with a recently-filed patent application that suggests an image be shot of the projected image (by the phone's camera, of course) and uses it to adjust color, intensity, and the like. Again, at this point, we'd be happy just to take a micro projector period, never mind a fancy one like this -- but we're glad these guys have their eyes on the prize.

[Via Cellpassion]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

No rest for the wicked: Sony Ericsson prepping another clamshell?

Hot off a bangin' MWC, it looks like Sony Ericsson might already be looking forward to its next round of announcements with this rather convincing looking scan (or something) of an unidentified clamshell. Could it be faked? Sure, but given the fact that it clearly isn't toward the upper end of the company's lineup, we're not too sure why anyone would bother -- not to mention the "confidential" watermarks you can make out over the two images of the phone. We'll find out what's up soon enough, we're sure.

[Via SEfanatics]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Yeah, the XPERIA X1 runs Windows Mobile 6.1

Filed under: Handsets, Software, Sony Ericsson, Windows Mobile

It probably shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, but yep, that mysterious new version of Windows Mobile that Sony Ericsson was dread to discuss at MWC wasn't so mysterious at all -- it's just Windows Mobile 6.1. Granted, 6.1 still hasn't been announced to the world, but it's a well-documented rev that should do a decent job of holding us all over until 7 finally (finally!) happens. Given the pure hotness of the hardware, we kinda wish Microsoft actually had rolled some sort of crazy post-6.1 update just for it, but we guess Sony Ericsson's custom panel interface will have to pick up the slack there.

[Via SEfanatics]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

We're out, see you next year Mobile World Congress

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, LG, Motorola, Nokia, NEC, RIM, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, GSM, EDGE, <a href="http://www.engad
