Not so much. Google's head honcho for mobile engineering, Ann Mei Cheng, has gone on record saying that Android is "just another device" for them that'll be treated equally with its contemporaries, an attitude that can be attributed in no small part to the fact that the company's mobile team is kept well apart from the Android peeps. That's good news for anyone who's not using an Android device, we figure -- which is pretty much everyone at the moment -- and it's also a predictable move from a company known for its agnostic, conquer-all approach that cares not whether its users are using its platform or another's. Whether they'll be singing the same tune should Android obtain world domination, though, is another question entirely.

[Via Talk Android]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

New Sprint Mogul beta moves to Windows Mobile 6.1

Filed under: Handsets, Software, HTC, Sprint, Windows Mobile
Whoa now, hold up there -- yes, we know HTC's got some serious equipment in the works for Sprint this year, but we can't put that Mogul out to pasture just yet. Fortunately, Sprint and HTC both seem relatively committed to keeping the flagship Windows Mobile model up to date, and we now have an official beta firmware floating around that adds Sprint TV and the real prize, Windows Mobile 6.1. Everyone knows that nobody buys a BlackBerry for its musical prowess, right? Au contraire, dearest email addict. RIM is currently working up a new application for BlackBerry smartphones that will "transfer your desktop iTunes music files" to your BB for those rare moments when you can actually kick back and enjoy the soothing sounds of Rogue Wave. Interestingly, we're not told whether BlackBerry Media Sync is being crafted specifically for the upcoming Bold, and we're also left to wonder when it'll actually be released. Patience is a virtue -- at least that's the word heard through the grapevine.

[Via CNET]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Maps on Ovi promises to span the phone-PC navigation bridge

Nokia's just unveiled an interesting add-on to both its Ovi suite of multimedia services and its very capable Maps navigation app called "Maps on Ovi" (naturally). Perhaps sensing the trend toward connected, social navigation devices and services, Maps on Ovi allows users of Nokia Maps to sync routes both to and from devices, ultimately sharing planned and traveled trips online with other Ovi users. Seeing how waypoint searching and routing is something you probably don't want to do exclusively on your phone, the program sounds like a pretty brilliant idea from that aspect alone, and tying in the sharing capability is just icing on the cake. The tentative plan is to have a build ready for public use this summer; S60 devices (read: Nokia Maps clients) will be the first to benefit, but it sounds like Nokia wants to expand it to other platforms in the future.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

New players team up with LiMo Foundation

Filed under: Software, Sagem, Verizon Wireless, Linux
Following a new round of partnership announcements back in February, LiMo Foundation today added 8 new members, bringing the grand total to 40 -- and perhaps most notably, Verizon Wireless becomes the first American carrier to team up with the group and the Foundation's final board member (in other words, they seem to be taking this initiative pretty seriously). Other new players include South Korea's SK Telecom, France's SFR, Sagem, chipmaker Infineon, and Mozilla, suggesting that there'll be plenty of mobile Firefox support for LiMo's nascent platform. LiMo represents the largest Linux-based threat to Android's plans for world domination, having announced its initiative some time before Google while collecting a veritable who's-who of world players from NTT DoCoMo to manufacturers like LG and Motorola -- and with the depth of Verizon's commitment to this, evident by its nabbing of an actual board seat, we wouldn't be surprised to see LiMo-based products actually go beyond its Any Apps, Any Device initiative and get real on the carrier's official lineup.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Verizon rumored ready to get down with LiMo Foundation

Filed under: Software, Verizon Wireless, Linux
The latest word on the street suggests that Verizon is getting ready to announce that it's throwing its formidable weight behind the LiMo Foundation, that "other" mobile Linux group that's attracted some serious muscle behind founding member NTT DoCoMo. With Verizon's Any Apps, Any Device initiative on tap for this year, a wide-open platform like LiMo makes perfect sense -- and as folks are pointing out, the move wouldn't preclude the carrier from jumping on the Android bandwagon just the same once the hardware and software have ripened enough for customer consumption. If this all goes down, it'd mark the very first American carrier to sign on with LiMo -- and since Verizon's European spouse, Vodafone, is already on board, the synergy's pretty obvious. What's more, media outlets (ours included) have gotten word that LiMo will be announcing several new partners in the morning, including a "major US wireless service provider." Wonder who that could be?

[Via mocoNews]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

HTC Touch Diamond soft keyboard comes to other WinMo phones

Filed under: Software, HTC, Windows Mobile

We weren't too thrilled with the Touch Diamond's resistive touchscreen when we got a chance to play with HTC's new hotness, but if you're envious of that updated soft keyboard, you're in luck: the Diamond's ROMs have already been pulled apart and the .cab files are just a click away. Installation is said to be slow and you'll have to jump through some hoops to switch the default language from Italian, but things will eventually work out for you -- although we doubt anyone's going to be nearly as impressed as if you had a real Touch Diamond.

[Via MobilitySite]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

Google to take over Sprint's deck and beyond

Even as Android hums right along, Google's still not shy about pursuing every other conceivable angle to take over the mobile space, proving that it's one of the more platform-agnostic companies in the biz. The latest partnership comes with Sprint, where the carrier's content deck will be retooled to use Google for search -- a change that'll affect current devices, obviously -- but what's more, Sprint will start offering home screen search on some of its devices starting later this year (Windows Mobile-based ones, if we had to guess). Also in store are preloaded Google Maps and YouTube, two of the more popular mobile destinations in the game at the moment. Going forward, the twosome "will continue to explore ways to provide users with compelling mobile experiences and more application choices," so expect Google's future on-device offerings to be pretty easy to access from your Sprint weapon of choice -- not to say it's usually very hard to begin with.

[Via MobileBurn]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

New Windows Mobile peeped in Microsoft Live Mesh video?

Filed under: Handsets, Software, HTC, Windows Mobile

Granted this only gives us a glimpse -- by glimpse we mean only a few seconds -- of what could be a new version of Windows Mobile 7 running HTC Touch Slide handset. The media sharing magic of Live Mesh is what's at the center of this vid, from Mac, to Windows, to mobile, your pics and content will wander -- but the quick glimpse of the sliding pane on the home screen did make us grin a little bit. You can find the video after the break and if you don't want to sit through the whole affair, just zip to about the 30 second mark and you'll be home.

Look! It's pretty and free! Though of course you're going to need a BlackBerry handset -- or a couple -- to make it all run smoothly, but we're sure Bell will help with that bit. The BlackBerry Unite! collaboration package is designed for families and small businesses to give them features like calendar sharing, mail access -- up to 10 accounts per person -- shared contacts, and access to shared files on the PC where the software is installed. Of course, there's a rub, the suite will only support 5 users, but that should hopefully float most peoples and some small home outfits boats. Now if only RIM would throw down some handsets to get the youngsters clamoring, then we'd really be talking.

You'll never believe this, but it looks like Cupertino might be getting ready to drop a bomb this summer -- a 3G bomb, in fact! The latest beta release of firmware 2.0 for the iPhone has apparently revealed a preference screen that allows users of the new model to disable the 3G radio and fall back to GPRS / EDGE because the faster service "decreases battery life." Gotta pay to play, as they say. The ability to disable 3G service in favor of improved standby performance is a pretty common one in modern phones, so we're not surprised to see it here -- just a little disappointed that Apple hasn't incorporated enough fairy dust to magically make the problem go away.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

MWg releasing Windows Mobile 7 gear before the year's out?

Filed under: Handsets, Software, Others, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS, HSUPA

Not long after spinning off from former corporate parent O2, Windows Mobile purveyor MWg is moving out of its Asian comfort zone to attempt to sell its wares over in Europe with a splashy press conference to kick things off -- and if the aggressive roadmap they're pursuing for the next year or so holds true, they might just have a fighting chance at making a splash up there. First up are the official European intros of the Atom V and Zinc II, HSDPA-equipped handsets that have been kicking around for a while now, but that's not even close to the interesting part. Looking deeper into '08 reveals a handful of HTC Diamond competitors, devices that are sporting a respectable 7.2Mbps down and 5.2Mbps up, and looking still deeper into the fourth quarter suggests that MWg intends to release its first Windows Mobile 7-powered device -- the Flame II -- with GPS, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and "multimedia features" on board. That seems a little far-fetched considering that 7 hasn't been officially shown off and 6.1 isn't even in broad distribution to users yet, but we appreciate MWg's motivation here. We also see a Shift killer in the wings with Vista and a 3G data connection toward the end of the year, so all told, the future's looking bright for these cats if they can actually execute.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Motorola iDEN software updates vanish into thin air

Alright, let's start firing up the conspiracy theory engines, shall we? Motorola's iDEN Software Upgrades site -- one of the first around to offer handset firmware upgrades directly to customers -- has been mysteriously pulled down with nary a clue as to the reason or when they might be back up. All we know is that they're "currently unavailable" and that we should check back at a "later time." We imagine new firmware builds for these rugged warriors aren't exactly the hottest thing going to begin with (and let's be honest, what percentage of iDEN users even knew this site existed to begin with?) but let's hope Moto has a plan to bring these back out nonetheless.

[Via Unwired View and PhoneNews]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Adobe kills license fees for Flash on devices

Keeper of Flash, Adobe, has unveiled its far-reaching "Open Screen Project," garnering the interest of a who's who of heavy hitters ranging from ARM to Verizon and pretty much everyone in between. Why the massive corporate attention? The project ultimately aims to open-source Flash's file formats and portions of its inner workings -- but perhaps more importantly, it'll kill the license fee manufacturers pay to bundle Flash players on their devices, potentially opening the door for the same massive level of acceptance Flash has enjoyed on the desktop in our pockets as well. There's no word on exactly when the fruits of the project will be available to the public -- Adobe says it's "just underway," after all -- but if this means our Flash-laden phone is going to be, like, 20 cents cheaper now, we're all for it.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

iPhone firmware 2.0 adds Chinese handwriting recognition, Newton sweats

Filed under: Software, Apple, OS X

Screen shots posted on Chinese site wretch.cc allege that iPhone firmware 2.0 has added support for Chinese handwriting recognition in addition to a revamped (albeit non-recognition) Japanese interface. While that's still light years from an Apple admission that not everyone is in love with the on-screen keyboard, it's one small step toward functionality that seems to make boatloads of sense -- in any language -- given the phone's generously proportioned touchscreen and its reluctant but unavoidable nomination as the Newton's spiritual successor. What isn't clear is how folks are expected to draw characters, seeing how there's no provision for an on-board stylus, the entire interface is designed for finger use, and we don't see many owner rushing out for a Pogo. However Apple intends for this feature to be used, the implementation looks pretty hot, capable of operating in both portrait and landscape modes. Sadly, it seems that Chinese is the one and only language supported at the moment; sure you don't want to let everyone in on the Graffiti-esque retro fun here, guys?

[Via Mac Rumors]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Nokia rolling custom 6124 classic in Taiwan with i-mode support

Filed under: Handsets, Software, Nokia, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS
Wait, Taiwan? i-mode? Yep, turns out that Far EasTone Telecommunications licenses NTT DoCoMo's well-known mobile internet brand for use in Taiwan, and they've partnered with Nokia to deliver the service on a customized version of the 6124 classic candybar -- the first Nokia ever to offer it. Of course, no i-mode handset is complete without blazing data speeds, and sure enough, the 6124 classic delivers with support for HSDPA in addition to a 2 megapixel cam, QVGA display, and S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1. When we'd heard that T-Mobile Germany was at loggerheads with Nokia over its Ovi services, the carrier was quick to point out that it didn't offer any Ovi-compatible devices in its lineup to begin with and that it was "in discussions with Nokia about this topic and [was] confident to find a common path in the near future." Sure enough, it looks as though that "common path" has now been found with an announcement that Nokia will be working closely with T-Mob to integrate its web'n'walk mobile internet service with Ovi for deployment on future devices customized for the carrier. There's no telling what sorts of contracts got signed behind the scenes here, but if we had to guess, we'd say most of T-Mobile's existing content-based revenue streams are going to end up being preserved by appearing within the Ovi sandbox on these new phones. A loss for Nokia? Not if it wants its phones to keep appearing on T-Mobile Germany's store shelves, it isn't.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Gigabyte's GSmart Smart Touch UI shown on video

Check it -- Gigabyte has just revealed details about a swank new user interface for its GSmart mobiles, and it has been coined Smart Touch. Sadly, multi-touch gestures aren't supported, but it does handle dragging / dropping and gives users oodles of customization options. Comically enough, the note on the new UI actually admits that it "works like [the interface on the] iPhone," but it claims to be superior due to its tight-knit integration and more "useful and interesting features." Sure, alrighty. We'll let you be the judge on this one -- jump on past the break for an excruciatingly long demonstration vid.

[Via the::unwired]
Continue reading Gigabyte's GSmart Smart Touch UI shown on video

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

HTC Diamond screen shots floating around?

Filed under: Handsets, Software, HTC, Windows Mobile

As we hurl headlong toward HTC's May 6 date with destiny, the Diamond is looking more and more like the headlining act for the unveiling -- but what's it gonna look like when they turn it on? Screen shots of a purported Diamond have turned up on Chinese site PDAFans, and if they turn out to be legit, the answer is "pretty much like any other Windows Mobile 6.1 device." One of the Diamond's alleged claims to fame is a revamped TouchFLO interface, though we're not really seeing a heck of a lot of that here; just a whole lotta plain-vanilla WinMo that has us thinking that this is either fake or an early prototype with an particularly barren build loaded. Doesn't really matter how hot the hardware ends up being -- unless HTC manages to impress with the software visuals, we suspect there are going to be a lot of disappointed people when this one starts shipping.

[Via PDAPhoneHome, thanks Joseph G.]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Video: iSwish puts the iPhone UI on any Windows Mobile phone

While you can argue that Windows Mobile is feature-for-feature and spec-for-spec superior to OS X on the iPhone, Apple's mobile UI is certainly more fun to use. So if you're running WinMo with a hankerin' for rubber band-like scrolling, jiggly icons, screen flicking, SummerBoard themes, and even simulated multi-touch pinching of photos then you're in luck. Flick Software Research is set to release its iSwish interface and iZoom pinch software in beta come "early May." Hey Flick, here's a hint: Dell Axim != sexy demo hardware... or maybe that's the point. Considering that some countries are mulling the idea of making texting a recognized subject and allowing students to use text-speak on exams, we suppose it's not too outrageous to hear of handsets being used as educational tools and not seen as a hindrance. Nokia has teamed up with Mindset Network in order to spearhead the M4Girls pilot project, which utilizes Nokia 6300 handsets loaded with educational material to "help improve the mathematics performance of Grade 10 girl learners." Reportedly, the initiative will be piloted in two South African schools, and students lucky enough to take advantage will have access to educational games and other material created to meet the needs of the national curriculum. No word on whether the program will filter out to other locations if it proves successful, but here's to hoping that eventually gets answered with a resounding "yes."

[Via textually]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Updated SlingPlayer Mobile clients now available

Filed under: Multimedia, Software, Symbian, Windows Mobile

Remember those refreshed Sling apps we mentioned not long ago? They've finished baking and they're ready for prime time (sorry, BlackBerry users, we don't mean you -- not yet, anyway). The players for Windows Mobile, both Professional and Standard editions, now rest at version 1.6 while the S60 player gets upped to 1.1; changes are relatively minor, but notable, the Nokia N95 8GB is now officially supported (even though the old player worked pretty well) along with a slew of new WinMo pieces and set-top boxes, video quality is improved on some devices, new channel logos are included, and some "under the hood tweaks." The update is available now and free for existing SlingPlayer Mobile users; newbs, meanwhile, pay a $30 one-time pop.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Quickoffice catches Android fever, suits let out sigh of relief

Doesn't really matter how high the cool factor is on Android handsets once they start trickling into the retail channel -- if they lack productivity and enterprise software, business penetration is going to hover near zero. That's a problem, seeing how companies have a tendency to buy entire fleets of phones at once, contributing serious revenue to a carrier's and a manufacturer's bottom line come earnings report time. Don't worry though, Android, Quickoffice has you covered. The suite -- familiar to a great many Palm, S60, and UIQ users -- brings serious Office document viewing and editing power to the world's non-Windows Mobile smartphones, and judging from a recent show-and-tell with PC Magazine, it looks like they have every intention of sharing that same power with Android users. All the typical Quickoffice stuff is there, appearing surprisingly close to being ready for prime time despite the fact that Android hardware isn't expected for a handful of months yet. One bonus feature here (and a biggie at that) is integration with Soonr's technology for accessing documents remotely -- pretty nifty, since most of us don't carry our full library of documents when we're on the road. No word on a release date here, but we imagine we'll be seeing it right about the same time that the first devices hit the market.

[Via Talk Android]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Java-based client spreads Skype far and wide

Why should smartphone and 3 Skypephone users have all the fun? Skype has finally released a client written for mobile Java, enabling the ubiquitous VoIP pipe to be used on a wide, wide variety of phones (Skype says they've tested it on about 50, but it's likely to work on far more than that). Though it's naturally scaled down a bit to fit in its tiny target footprint, the client still manages to pack in support for Skype-to-Skype and SkypeOut calls, chat, group chat, and your buddy list -- pretty much everything you need to make it functional. If you're going to have a go at it, just make sure you're on a sufficiently generous data plan, k?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: Turns out the data plan doesn't have to be that generous. There's little doubt that Linux has quite a bit going for it in the mobile realm, but a recent report put out by ABI Research asserts that just about one in every five mid- to high-end handsets sold in 2013 will boast a Linux-based OS. Citing the mounting momentum behind LiMo Foundation as well as the alleviation of "issues with framework fragmentation and silicon requirements," the research firm is projecting Linux to be an integral part of some 20-percent of higher-end mobiles in just 5 years. ABI Research's VP even noted that "Linux OS solutions will be far more cost-effective than incumbent solutions, even when silicon requirements are taken into account, given that a fuller application layer will be included in the standard package and that the burden of customization falls mostly on the independent software vendor." Hey, you won't find us kvetching about the proliferation of open-source.

[Via mocoNews]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

New iPhone SDK and firmware builds in the mix, now with more OpenGL

Filed under: Software, Apple, OS X

Once again, the time has come for a fresh beta build of the official iPhone SDK -- and if you're lucky enough to be involved in the firmware seeding program, a fresh build of the 2.0 firmware, too. The big change this time around appears to be support for OpenGL ES in the SDK's emulator, enabling easy, breezy access to 3D acceleration for testing all those spellbinding games we plan on playing the heck out of in a couple months. So yeah, shouldn't you get cracking on that? Make us proud, Alltel! The number five carrier's really been going all-out as of late, doing an impressive job of keeping its offerings in line with the big boys -- and in some cases, outdoing 'em with hot exclusives like the Glimmer. Once again, they've gotten the jump on their larger, heavier competition by becoming the first carrier to release a firmware upgrade for the Vogue (the Alltel Touch, in this case) that ups the radio to EV-DO Rev. The user community already had a number of hacks available for this, but you can't help but get a warm fuzzy every time a manufacturer snatches up cool functionality and bundles it into the official firmware. N95 8GB firmware v20.0.016 is now out and about, offering automatic screen rotation based on the device's in-built accelerometers (why this wasn't functional out of the box is beyond us, considering the requisite hardware was already in place) along with browser and WiFi updates. As always, we suspect this is hitting the Euro-spec N95-2 first -- but we imagine an update for the N95-4 can't be far behind.

[Via All About Symbian]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Major MobiTV improvements coming next month

Likely feeling pressure to innovate as competitors like DVB-H and MediaFLO close the mobile TV gap, MobiTV is prepping a plethora of improvements to its software and back end that should be hitting customers everywhere next month. Perhaps the single biggest improvement will be the system's capability to multicast programming on the fly based on the real-time popularity of a channel in a given area, rather than unicasting it and requiring significantly more bandwidth be sapped from the data pipe. Speaking of real-time, ads will now be injected on the fly -- and they'll be targeted, too, giving users some semblance of a reason to not change channels or put the phone back in their pocket when their program cuts to commercial break. MobiTV also says that it has somehow managed to cut channel change times down to a second or less -- a huge improvement over the existing software -- addressing a complaint leveled by many a MobiTV user over the years. Sure, AT&T's rolling out MediaFLO next month -- but if there's a message in these developments here, it's that these guys don't plan on slipping quietly into the night.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Enkin: digitized signage for your Android device

Among the hopefuls for Google's Android Developer Challenge (which ended yesterday, by the way, so put down your pencils and turn in your papers) is this little gem, Enkin. Put simply, the navigation app's ace card is its "live mode," which combines a plethora of sensory data -- camera input, GPS, directional information, motion detection -- to show the user an augmented view of what they're actually looking at in their environment. Augmented with what, exactly? Placemarkers that indicate landmarks, that's what, and the possibilities are pretty endless -- restaurants in the immediate vicinity, a gentle reminder of your car's location in the parking lot, the list goes on. Nokia's been toying with this concept for a good long while now but they've failed to commercialize it, so here's hoping will finally see a usable product on a retail device.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

iPhone gets VoIP and chat options thanks to Fring

Filed under: Software, Apple, OS X

Sure, the iPhone is cool looking, works out a lot, and is really good at math... but it can't do VoIP, can it? Well, yes it can -- and you can, thanks to a company called Fring and a piece of ingenious software (for jailbreakers only). Using the native app, it's now possible to place and receive calls via your WiFi connection, thus making AT&T CEOs cry like little babies. Besides doing Skype and the like, the app also lets you connect for chats via MSN Messenger, ICQ, GTalk, SIP, Twitter, AIM, and Yahoo!, which should make this an attractive package even if you don't want to harness the raw power of IP telephony. You can get the application for free by loading up Installer with the company's repo. Check the video after the break to see the magic happen.

[Via Zatz Not Funny!]
Continue reading iPhone gets VoIP and chat options thanks to Fring

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Latest iPhone beta firmware does full screen captures, saves web images

You might have heard that the latest iPhone 2.0 beta firmware allows users to save web images to its running camera roll for later download to its host machine (or sharing via email). Well, a reliable source let us know that the image capturing good times don't end there: the iPhone now capable of taking full screen caps (like the one above) simply by holding the sleep button, then tapping the home button. We haven't personally tested either technique (we already know what you're thinking: we can't say whether it captures screens from a video), but apparently it flashes white to indicate the cap's been taken and the image has been added to your roll. Let's hope these two neato features make it to the release firmware.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Opera Mini finds its way onto Android

Got Android and lack lovely browsing experience? Our first thought when we heard the news that there was an NES emulator in the works for the Sidekick series of text machines was one of pure, unabashed elation. The classic Hiptop form factor is pretty much exactly what the doctor ordered for effective old-skool gaming, after all -- and let's be honest, any time Nintendo playtime comes to a new platform is cause for immediate and overindulgent celebration. Our second thought was, "wait, what?" It's pretty unclear how the emulator would be loaded with legally-obtained ROMs and we have our doubts that Nintendo signed away the rights to any binaries, so we're a little confused about the word that this would be officially offered through the Danger's Software Catalog. Let's all cross our fingers, continue to pay our T-Mobile bills on time, and hope that tomorrow might bring countless hours of Skate or Die while we're... you know, actually skating or something.

Update: While not technically fake, it turns out that this 80s-vintage action is going to remain a pipe dream (and no, we're not talking about the NES game Pipe Dream, either). Danger's developer tools allow arbitrary Java to be loaded into the Hiptop emulator -- not just approved stuff, obviously -- so odds are that someone loaded an NES emulator (like, say, vNes) and went to town with the screen shots. Official offering through the Catalog, though? Not so much. Thanks, Jim!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

BD Touch Blu-ray disc-to-iPhone app officially unveiled

Filed under: Software, Apple, OS X
Ending the awful (two) days of waiting, NetBlender's officially presenting its latest innovation, BD Touch. All that geolocation, 3D motion sensitive, multitouch and predictive keyboard could be a part of our favorite movie (The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension) -- once some developer makes it happen. The disc authoring end of the tool is built into NetBlender's DoStudio software, while there are two iPhone SDKs (the Connect SDK is free, while the Premiere Blend/In SDK adds functionality but requires certification and licensing) available. Video demos are after the jump, so take a look and see what you can come up with.
Continue reading BD Touch Blu-ray disc-to-iPhone app officially unveiled

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Richard Lawler

iPhone contacts search and meeting invite revealed

Filed under: Features, Software, Apple, OS X

Remember that sweet little magnifying glass from the iPhone SDK demo? Well apparently we all weren't having a shared hallucination -- it's in the enterprise version of firmware 2.0. Thanks to a tipster, we've now got shots of the search bar clearly hanging out at the top of the contacts list. While we're unraveling mysteries, you'll be happy to know that the little drawer button -- which did nothing in the regular old firmware we had -- is actually a meeting invitations folder, which displays the number of requests just like the SMS and mail icons. Other changes? Enterprise users don't get the app store or iTunes store icons. Boo. Check out the gallery below to see just exactly what we're talking about. Now, on to finding JFK's real killer!

Gallery: iPhone contacts search and meeting invite revealed

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Apple pushes new iPhone SDK, firmware builds

Filed under: Software, Apple, OS X

This image, distributed to mailboxes across the globe this evening, pretty much says it all: a new cut of the official iPhone SDK beta is now available. That little morsel can be had by pretty much anyone that wants it; a new build of firmware 2.0 is available, too, but only to the Chosen Few. Let us know of any fascinating changes you stumble upon!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

StyleTap beta for Symbian gearing up, Garnet pwnage nears completion

Filed under: Software, Palm OS, Symbian
Turning our attention away from the unobtainable iPhone version for a moment, let's take a look at something far more real that StyleTap has in the cards: Symbian support. The Palm OS emulator is already a well-worn member of the Windows Mobile community (pictured), and seeing how Symbian's got a huge installed base, it makes sense that they'd want to attack it next. There's no word on exactly what models and flavors will be supported, but it certainly seems like having a touchscreen would be a good idea -- sorry, N95 owners! The beta program kicks off May 12 and StyleTap's soliciting applications now, so head on over to the site if you have some insatiable desire to be the first kid on the block rocking all your favorite Garnet apps atop a P1i.

[Thanks, Jason]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler
