From rumor to sale in about two months' time -- not bad. The Sanyo Katana LX is now available through Sprint, offering a worthy replacement to the aging Katana II at the same price point, $49.99 on contract after rebates. Fashion is the name of the game here, thanks to a trendy see-through front cover revealing an external display underneath and availability in three collect-'em-all colors: Liquid Graphite, Pacific Blue, and Elegant Pink. You're also going to get GPS, Bluetooth, and a VGA cam -- but one thing you aren't going to get is EV-DO, so steer clear if you have a need for speedy bits.

[Thanks, Chuck and Jorge]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sanyo Katana LX for Sprint rears its shiny head

Filed under: Handsets, Sanyo, Sprint, CDMA

So that's where the external display is! From the FCC documentation, we couldn't really make out what was up with Sanyo's Katana LX -- a phone that's allegedly destined to replace the lowly Katana II -- but it turns out that the display is hidden under a semi-translucent casing. This is a trick we've seen employed by various manufacturers in the past, often with lovely results, and it's looking pretty solid this time around, too. With any luck we'll see this one in the flesh next month. Follow the break for another glamor shot, if you're so inclined.
Continue reading Sanyo Katana LX for Sprint rears its shiny head

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sprint's Sanyo Katana LX gets the FCC rundown

Filed under: Handsets, Sanyo, Sprint, CDMA

That rumored Katana II replacement, the creatively-named Katana LX, is looking more real than ever now that the FCC's labs have put it through the ringer. If the remainder of the rumor ends up checking out, the LX ended up passing the federal checkpoint just in the nick of time en route to an April launch. One thing that concerns us just a tad is that we're having a hard time finding an external display or a camera, though we imagine it's possible that one or both are crammed into that black area near the hinge; if not, this bad boy's going to make a pretty miserable Katana II successor since the older model carried both features. Needless to say, EV-DO isn't in the cards either way.

<a href=http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=446962&fcc_id='AEZSCP-3800'>Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

QChat phones, others launching on Sprint mid-April?

Filed under: Handsets, LG, RIM, Sanyo, Sprint, EV-DO, CDMA

Word on the street is that customers might be getting their first crack at Sprint's QChat wares rather soon -- April 16, to be exact. The news comes from phoneArena, which reports that the LG LX400 (pictured) will be launching alongside Sanyo's PRO-200 and PRO-700 on that fateful day, presumably along with the Direct Connect tech (and iDEN heir apparent) itself. The LG is rumored to be coming in at an SRP of $279.99, while the two Sanyos check in at $249.99 and $269.99, respectively. Also slated for April launches are the BlackBerry Curve 8330 in "titanium" along with Sanyo's Katana LX, a replacement for the Katana II that'll presumably keep its slim profile but carry over the forgettable VGA cam.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sanyo alive and well, pushes first Direct Connect phones through FCC

Filed under: Handsets, Sanyo, Sprint, EV-DO, CDMA

The trickle of QChat-enabled handsets for Sprint's Direct Connect push-to-talk service is in the process of turning into a flood now that manufacturers don't have to worry about dealing with Moto's proprietary iDEN network, and Sanyo is the latest to join the party with a pair of models named SCP-PRO200 and SCP-PRO700. As the names and ID label renderings imply, these will likely be ruggedized models targeted squarely at the same audience that currently snaps up iDEN equipment, so go ahead and get ready to drop these things, splash them with mud, and generally treat them like poo. Both are equipped with Bluetooth and EV-DO, so they'll be able to hold their own with the remainder of Sprint's midrange whenever they get around to launching.

[Via Phone Scoop]

Read - Sanyo SCP-PRO200
Read - Sanyo SCP-PRO700

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

KDDI au announces Spring 2008 collection

Filed under: Handsets, Features, Others, Panasonic, Pantech, Sanyo, Sony Ericsson, KDDI, EV-DO, Kyocera, CDMA, Casio, Toshiba

Yes, friends, the time has come once again for Japan's carriers to upheave their still-fresh lineups and replace them with even fresher ones. Here we take a look at KDDI au's just-announced Spring '08 collection, including a model with an e-ink display and another with a 3 inch OLED. Wowza! Note that not all of these handsets are new -- some are carryovers from the carrier's Winter '07 collection, so we won't be covering those here. Sanyo just made official what's been rumored since August: the sale of its troubled cellphone division to Kyocera. The deal is set for completion on April 1st at a value of about $350 million. The deal involves about 2,000 employees moving from Sanyo's mobile phone operation to Kyocera where they can reminisce with ex-Qualcommers about the good ol' days.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

Samsung's F490 / P720 handsets get outed

Although we came across Samsung's SGH-F490 during a recent FCC scavenger hunt, it, along with the previously announced P720 were recently spotted at an event in Ukraine. Unfortunately, most is lost in translation, but we can gather that the latter will rock dual SIM card slots, a 3-megapixel camera, a 320 x 240 resolution display and a price tag upwards of $500. As for the F490, you can expect a 5-megapixel camera, touchscreen display (presumably with tactile feedback support), 432 x 240 resolution panel and an estimated cost of $600. Beyond that, it seems that we'll have to wait before finding out more, but considering the Q2 / Q1 2008 release dates (respectively), we ought not be waiting long.

[Via UnwiredView]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Sprint launches entry-level Sanyo S1 for the masses

Filed under: Handsets, Sanyo, Sprint, CDMA

From Sprint's roadmap to the FCC to a Radio Shack shelf near you, Sprint has decided to launch the entry-level Sanyo S1 right on time. Equipped with nothing more than a dual-band CDMA radio, speaker phone, and Bluetooth 2.0, it leaves much to be desired for all but the most basic tastes. You can catch the uber-thin candybar at Radio Shack now $220 full retail, $95 on a one year, or free after a two year contract.

[Thanks, Brandon]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Michael Caputo

Kyocera said to be ever so close to buying Sanyo's cellphone biz

Kyocera has already shown it was pretty serious about buying Sanyo's cellphone business, and it now looks like that persistence may be about to pay off, with the two companies reportedly all but set to announce a deal. While the final price has apparently yet to be fixed, Nikkei says Kyocera has offered 70 billion yen (or nearly $600 million) for the business, although that price may wind up being a bit lower after Kyocera has done all its due diligence. As Reuters points out, if the deal goes through, it would make Kyocera the world's seventh-largest cellphone business, up from its current 10th place position. That possibility should become clear soon enough, as the deal could apparently be announced as early as today.

The move is of little consequence outside of Japan as far as we can tell, but it's yet another sign that Sanyo's looking to strip itself of most of its non-core businesses, phones included. If anything, we'd say this all strengthens the case for an imminent sale of the grand prize to Kyocera, a move that would instantly boost the manufacturer's American presence through Sanyo's extensive dealings with Sprint. Sure, it was all fun and games when folks were just tossing about the idea, but it seems that Kyocera may be taking this whole deal a bit more seriously than we previously assumed. Reportedly, "Kyocera [is aiming] to buy Sanyo's cell phone operations for about ¥50 billion ($435 million)," and just in case you still had doubts, these same sources are suggesting that the two are "entering the final stage of talks." Of course, a Kyocera spokeswoman declined to comment on the validity of the claims, but if this deal does indeed get done, it will create "the world's seventh-largest mobile phone maker."

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Sanyo S1 hits the FCC

Filed under: Handsets, Sanyo, Sprint, EV-DO, CDMA

Remember that Sprint roadmap we mentioned not long ago? There was talk of an SCP-4930 replacement dubbed "S1" reportedly dropping in October, and what we're seeing now in the FCC would pretty much back up that statement. Sanyo's got a confidentiality agreement in full effect here, sadly, but we can make out from the ID label documentation that we're pretty clearly dealing with a candybar of some sorts. Despite the naming convention, we've been hearing that the S1 will slot in lower than the high-end (at the time, anyway) M1, so don't get your hopes up that Sanyo's going to blow us all away here with some 8GB music monster. Still, though, good to see that the beleaguered manufacturer is still reppin' strong on Sprint.

<a href=https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=591386&fcc_id='AEZSCP-25H'>Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sprint's roadmap for remainder of '07 outed, too?

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, LG, Motorola, Palm, Pantech, RIM, Samsung, Sanyo, UTStarcom, Palm OS, Windows Mobile, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA
Following a thorough run-through of Verizon's plans for the rest of the year, this broader peep into Sprint's near future than we've seen before -- if real, anyway -- means that we now pretty much know everything there is to know about the wide world of CDMA here in the States for the next few months. It's a warm, fuzzy feeling, ain't it? Anyway, let's have a look: Palm is said to come swinging in with two, the 500 on the low end with a $99 price point on October 14 and an 800w ("w" stands for Windows Mobile 6 here, friends) up top -- though the latter doesn't grace shelves until Q1 of '08. Novatel gets down with an updated version of the U720 dubbed U727 (what else?) come September 30. Sanyo meanwhile should add the S1 candybar to replace the SCP-4930 on October 14, but November 4 is allegedly when things really start to heat up. That day should bring the LG LX260, RIM BlackBerry Pearl 2, HTC Vogue, and the UTStarcom PX-00, a low-cost Rev A data card to replace the PX-500. The Motorola Q9c -- possibly with GSM international roaming -- should drop by a little later in November, while a dual-mode CDMA / GSM rendition of the Samsung BlackJack replaces the IP-830w early next year. Again, this is all unconfirmed, but it seems plausible enough. Moving on, the Sprint Touch (read: CDMA) was said to be rockin' a potent 400MHz CPU, and it also touted EV-DO, 128MB of RAM, a two-megapixel camera, built-in GPS "to be activated in a Rev A upgrade," and a likely launch date in November. Furthermore, an EV-DO BlackBerry Pearl was on display along with a "petite candybar" from Sanyo, the sliding LG Rumor, and the Sprint Airave home cell site (once known as the Samsung Ubicell). That's what recent reports are suggesting, anyway, with a sale rumored to be going down "soon" to the tune of "several billion yen." That could be music to Sanyo's ears following several glum years of net losses -- shedding itself of a valuable operating unit could give the company some much-needed spending cash and give its phone lineup a shot at increasing its market presence in the hands of a more motivated parent. No word on when exactly this'll be going down; with some 38.5 billion yen (about $324 million) in revenue in the last fiscal year, though, it seems like this could be a relatively inexpensive opportunity for a new player to waltz in and make a serious play against bigger competitors.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sanyo fesses up to Katana DLX for Sprint

Filed under: Handsets, Sanyo, Sprint, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA

Sprint has yet to make any official mention of this phone's existence, but we've seen just about enough evidence to convince ourselves that the Katana DLX is the real deal. Positioned as a slightly higher-end rendition of the Katana II, the DLX mercifully adds the EV-DO data that both the II and the original Katana are sorely lacking. How do we know? Well, there's the FCC filing of course, but Sanyo has now seemingly admitted that the Katana DLX is the real deal and promises a near-term launch (think July) on Sprint. Other features include a microSD slot, 1.3 megapixel camera, and Bluetooth with A2DP, making this one a solid midrange offering if flips (or Sanyos) are your thing. Check it in "Platinum Ice," "Pink Satin," and "Champagne" -- pictured in that order -- when it hits shelves.

Update: It's on Sprint's site, all official-like. $129.99 on contract after rebates.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sprint releases Sanyo Katana II

Filed under: Handsets, Sanyo, Sprint, 1xRTT, CDMA
Looks like Sprint has dropped the drapes on Sanyo's Katana II handset, as it is showing on Sprint's website as of now. The SCP-6650 Katana II makes a few decent strides over the EV-DO-less original Katana from last year, including a refined design and a more RAZR-esque profile, but with the Katana II sportin' a positively ancient VGA digicam and lacking EV-DO data of any kind, this apparently-minor refresh to the Katana design may not win many converts from the original or otherwise. But hey, at under $100 with a new two-year contract, we can't complain too much -- although $50 seems like a more appropriate price right off the bat.

[Via Phone News]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Brian White

Sanyo Katana DLX hits Sprint developer site

Although we don't think the original Sanyo Katana handset was the "RAZR killer" Sanyo had hoped, the struggling Japanese mobile phone manufacturer must be preparing an encore beyond the Katana II. The Katana DLX (aka, Sanyo SCP-8500) was peeped a few days ago hiding out at the FCC and now just hit Sprint's developer website. Is it about to be released? Probably, but let's move on. A rundown on specs shows what is becoming the Sprint standard for summer 2007 releases: EV-DO, obligatory digicam and videocam functions, Bluetooth, 320 x 240 screen resolution with 262k colors. Add in an 80 x 80 external screen resolution, microSD slot and 96 megabytes of onboard memory and we've got another decent handset for the Sanyo loyal. Any excitement we would've had for the coming of the Katana's replacement has been tempered by a totally bogus lack of EV-DO -- but as a thin, inexpensive flip, it looks like the Katana II should be able to hold its own against the competition. This here is the first decent picture we've seen of the device -- or devices, seeing how it'll apparently be available in black, pink, and silver -- showing a reasonably attractive shell with the same VGA cam as its predecessor. The display's apparently up a fifth of an inch to 2 inches in total, but there ain't much else to talk about without upgrading to the slightly higher-end Katana DLX. So it turns out Sprint's Sanyo Katana is going to be met by no fewer than two successors. Besides the previously-seen Katana II, the FCC's been hooked up with the Katana DLX, a reasonably attractive (from what little we can tell) flip that features EV-DO, Bluetooth, microSD expansion, camera, and a PC modem mode. Of course, the FCC likes to be as coy as possible with details, so we've got nothin' else on this one for the time being -- but if it launches around the same time as the Katana II, we should see it in the next few months.

[Via Phone Scoop]

<a href=http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=305621&fcc_id='AEZSCP-85H'>Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sprint announces spectrum of Sanyo SCP-3200 flips

Filed under: Handsets, Sanyo, Sprint, 1xRTT, CDMA

Sprint's midrange line gets a little beefier today thanks to the introduction of Sanyo's SCP-3200. Available in Midnight Black, Playful Pink, and Atlantic Blue, the clamshell foregos EV-DO ("Power Vision" in Sprint lingo) but offers Bluetooth, a VGA camera, GPS, speakerphone, traditional Sprint Vision services, and -- if you're really hard up for a tethered modem -- you can still connect it to your lappie in 1xRTT mode. Look for it at $200 contract-free or $50 on a two-year agreement.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Engadget Mobile relaunch giveaways - Sanyo M1

How does a full gigabyte of internal Flash sound? Maybe throw in stereo Bluetooth, EV-DO data, a purty QVGA display and external music controls, and, well, you've got yourself a contender. Sprint has hooked us up with a Sanyo M1 to pass on to one lucky (hopefully music-loving) commenter, so might we suggest you get on that?

A few rules (yeah, there are always rules):

You may only enter this specific contest once. If you enter this contest more than once you'll be automatically disqualified and barred from all future giveaways. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.) In other words, be careful when commenting and don't submit more than once, ok?

You may enter our other EngMob relaunch contests, but you can't win more than once; if you happen to win more than once (which is pretty unlikely, but still) we'll ask you to choose just one of your prizes.

The prize is open to US entrants only. Hey, it's a US phone, you couldn't do anything with it anyway.

Contest is open until 11:59pm EDT on Tuesday, June 19th.

We'll be shipping all the phones to winners once all the relaunch giveaway contests are over. (Yeah, we know it bites to have to wait, but dems the breaks!)

Thanks and good luck to everyone! Samsung's SPH-W2400, which we spotted a month or so ago thanks to the FCC, finally has a face and a few more details to boot. The snazzy Anycall-built slider sports a unique rotating screen, DMB TV tuner, a two-megapixel camera, MP3 player, Bluetooth, microSD slot, TV out, language translation software, and HSDPA connectivity. Best of all, it appears that this phone will basically work in every corner of the modern world, but sadly, we've no idea where you'll actually find one for sale nor how much you'll be asked to cough up for it once you do.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Sanyo Katana II met by the FCC's warm embrace

Filed under: Handsets, Sanyo, Sprint, 1xRTT, CDMA

The Katana II has been a rumored device on Sprint for quite some time, but what we haven't been able to find out is whether it makes good on the original Katana's critical failure to include 3G. The device was originally billed as a low-cost alternative to the RAZR, but let's be honest: the RAZR ain't the king of the hill anymore, and EV-DO is finally a commodity feature in even entry-level CDMA handsets. Sadly, the Katana II's FCC filing doesn't shed any light on the sitch -- all we know is that it's a CDMA handset with Bluetooth -- but we do get a handful of sketches in the ID label documentation (think of it as a sort of color-by-number Katana II, minus the numbers). If the original rumors hold true, expect the phone to hit as soon as June.

<a href=http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=159092&fcc_id='AEZSCP-6650'>Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

KDDI pulls a KDDI, shows entire summer lineup at once

Filed under: Handsets, Others, Panasonic, Sanyo, Sony Ericsson, KDDI, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA, Casio, Toshiba

As we might expect from a massive launch on a Japanese carrier, the so-called "Collection 2007 Summer" (that's the "Summer 2007 Collection" for those not accustomed to reading phrases backwards) holds a handful of gems, including some VGA displays and 5 megapixel cams. But before we talk about phones riding off into the sunset, let's touch on some new arrivals, shall we? The PPC-6800 and Treo 755p are set to show on on exactly the same day -- May 14 -- which should lead to an interesting sales face-off. Sprint's brief description of the 755p is kinda interesting: "1st Palm EVDO Treo w/intern antenna. In box support for IM, NFL Mobile, Mobile Voice Control, voice dialing, replaces Treo 700P." Actually, it's not that interesting, we just really like to see the phrase "1st Palm EVDO Treo w/intern antenna" all official-like. Also of note, the Sanyo Katana II hits June 18 to replace the Katana (obviously), though Sanyo fans' excitement is going to be quelled a bit by the knowledge that the M1 is now chalked up for decommissioning in the May - June timeframe. Seems like a short life for a relatively powerful handset, no? Anyhoo, follow the break for a full list of Sprint pieces getting the proverbial axe in the coming months.
Continue reading The Boy Genius Report: More detail on Sprint's summer plans

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

A look at Sprint's summer fashions

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Motorola, Palm, Samsung, Sanyo, Sprint, Palm OS, Windows Mobile, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA

Sprint's "3 Month View" spreadsheet makes for some absolutely fascinating reading -- as long as it proves to be nonfiction, anyway. The document gives us an in-depth look at Sprint's (and Nextel's) launches for the months of April, May, and June, and needless to say, we're liking what we're seeing. Starting with standard phones, the Samsung M300 should make its grand entrance next month in silver alongside the Sanyo 3200 -- which replaces the 3100 -- in black, blue, and pink (the latter will run $200; no pricing on the former yet). Moving upmarket, the Samsung M510 replaces the M500 in May for an as-yet-undetermined price. In PDA land, no surprises here; the HTC Titan launches in PPC-6800 guise next month (sorry, no price here either), as does the Palm Treo 755p in blue and burgundy. Nextel users get the ic502 in black with an extended battery bundled (whooptie doo) for $270 next month, and if you wait until June, you'll get a crack at the ic902. Finally, road warriors will be pleased to hear that the Rev. A ExpressCard AC595E from Sierra Wireless gets launched in May, though a price remains to be set.

[Thanks, Terry]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sanyo's mobile business to be for sale soon?

There have been rumors of Sanyo's wireless handset division biting the dust for a while now, and the Japanese company may be tapping Goldman Sachs to sell it off as it continues to struggle. Sanyo's February 2006 partnership with Nokia went south by June, and that was quite possibly the last straw in Sanyo's handset future. The company's lone customer in the US market is Sprint (see SCP-8400 and M1), and the company's inability to crack larger markets en masse has caused its demise for the most part. Sanyo's CDMA handsets tend to enjoy a very loyal following, so we'd hate to see it disappear into the ether; any buyers care to keep these fellas afloat?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Brian White

KDDI Mobile - KDDI to launch US MVNO, stop the presses!

Filed under: Sanyo, Sprint, KDDI, EV-DO, MVNOs, CDMA

KDDI, Japan's number two cellphone carrier, totally blew our minds, everybody: they stated today that they'll be starting up an MVNO on Sprint in the US, name: KDDI Mobile. What's the point of yet another MVNO? (We're obligated to ask.) Well, besides giving Helio a run for their money in the Asian-carrier-gone-US-MVNO biz, maybe, just maybe we'll finally see a slew of totally slick and unbelievably well designed Japanese featurephones stateside (see above). Unfortunately, it sounds like they want to cater to Japanese expats in the US (are there really that many?); either way we definitely just got the warm n' fuzzies.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Sprint gets rugged with Sanyo SCP-7050

Filed under: Handsets, Sanyo, Sprint, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA

Nextel tends to get the lion's share of the beat-'em-up handsets in Sprint-Nextel's stable, but that's not to say the Sprint side of the equation doesn't have a few heavy duty customers of its own. The freshly announced SCP-7050 (or simply "7050," if you will) from Sanyo rocks mil spec 810F compliance for dust, shock, and vibration resistance -- and eschews the oft-banned camera -- for those all-work-and-no-play types out there. Besides the ruggedized shell, major features include dual displays, Bluetooth, speakerphone, and GPS that can continue to track without a signal from the overlords at Sprint. Look for it to hit in early April for $150 on a two-year contract.

[Thanks, Brandon]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Early peek at Sprint's Samsung M510 and Sanyo 7050

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Sanyo, Sprint, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA
Word is that the Samsung M510 and Sanyo 7050 will be in your favorite bricks and mortar Sprint shop in April. The Sanyo 7050 pushes the Sanyo 7000 off the shelf, and while lovely in its GPS blinkin', mil-spec rugged way, EV-DO is lacking and it mostly seems a case of same old, same old.

[Thanks, Tim S.]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

Hands-on with Sprint's 1H '07 roadmap?

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Motorola, Palm, Samsung, Sanyo, Sprint, Palm OS, Windows Mobile, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA

Authenticity is tough to verify here, but what we've heard from an inside source here regarding Sprint Nextel's launch estimates for the first half of the new year -- including some devices that have already hit the streets -- seems totally plausible, if not probable. Samsung's been tapped to provide three: the m300 "Vivace," m510 "Fantasy" (apparently a minor update to the m500), and -- most interestingly -- the m620 "Flipper," which we've now heard from multiple sources will be a CDMA version of the nifty F300 Ultra Music Edition, scheduled to launch with Sprint on April 1. Sanyo brings a total of five to the party, two of which have already launched: the 3200, 7000, 7050, Katana II (hopefully sporting EV-DO this time), and M1. Sierra Wireless and Novatel will team up to bring three more data devices to market, the 595U, 597E, and Express (the XV620, we're guessing?). Moto's on the hook for three devices, the Q (wow, we haven't heard it called "Franklin" in ages) and a pair of iDEN / CDMA hybrids, the ic502 and ic902. Rounding out the offerings will be the 6800 -- an HTC Titan variant -- and the previously-unmentioned Palm Sherlock (a CDMA version of the 680 or 750, we'd wager). Not a bad lineup considering this all theoretically goes down in the first six months of the year, eh?

[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sanyo kicks out kid-tracking handset for KDDI

Just a few days back we told you how the Japanese government planned on tracking kids via strategically placed RFID locators in dodgy areas of town, and it looks like KDDI is already pushing the "beneficial" side of being able to follow your offspring's every step by offering up Sanyo's latest kid-tracker. The A5525SA handset was designed with children in mind, from the dainty colors right down to the "crime prevention buzzer," which calls a pre-selected number if a certain pull string is yanked. Additionally, the battery cover is purportedly screwed down with a proprietary bolt so kidnappers can't easily power it down, but unfortunately it doesn't sport any type of smash resistance for taking it offline the easy way. Nevertheless, it also boasts a 1.3-megapixel camera, 320 x 240 resolution screen, microSD card, but most important to the parents is the built-in "route notification" function that can track your youngster's steps via GPS and map it out on your PC back home. Of course, we wouldn't be apt to let our five-year old run rampant on the streets of Japan in the first place, but if you're the uber-lenient type, at least this here lets you follow right alongside, albeit virtually.

[Via Spluch]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Sprint debuts TeleNav Traffic with intelligent rerouting

Filed under: Software, Motorola, Sanyo, Sprint

Sure, you can get all fancy and download your traffic reports via MSN Direct straight to an appropriately equipped Garmin, but Sprint and TeleNav have a slightly older-school idea (if you can really call EV-DO old-school) in mind. TeleNav Traffic supplements the company's phone-based GPS navigation software with traffic data updated every five minutes; problematic situations on your route can be delivered both via voice and on-screen prompt. Best of all, it'll route around jams, fiery wrecks, and other disasters automatically at the user's whim. Right now, availability is limited to Sprint's RAZR, KRZR, and Katana -- that's the bad news -- but the good news is that it's free for folks who pick up the basic GPS Navigator between now and June 30. After that, $3.99 / month is the magic number.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sprint's Sanyo M1 gets reviewed

Filed under: Handsets, Reviews, Sanyo, Sprint, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA

The Sanyo M1's unusually husky appearance might lead one to believe that it's the be-all, end-all solution to meet the world's high-function musicphone needs, but LAPTOP Magazine recently had an opportunity to put the clamshell through its paces -- and unfortunately, it turns out that carrying 1GB of internal storage in your phone isn't all fun and games. Though a solid gigabyte of space for music is all well and good, many folks consider that just a good start on their way to, say, 3 or 4GB in total. Problem is, the M1 lacks any sort of expansion slot, and we've got to agree with LAPTOP's conclusion that it's a nearly unforgivable oversight. Though the large external display, music controls, and A2DP are nice, they found that the phone's 2 megapixel shooter fell short with mediocre picture quality and an autofocus mechanism that took far too long to operate (and also far too long to disable). Add to that a cramped keyboard and internal display, a beefy 0.9 inches of girth, and the fact that the also-new Samsung m610 looks a good deal hotter for less dough, and... well, the M1's prognosis ain't great. So, owners (and secret admirers): what are your thoughts on Sanyo's latest effort?

[Thanks, Jennifer]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

NTT DoCoMo recalling 1.3 million Sanyo batteries

Just when we thought things couldn't get any worse, and we actually believed (ever so slightly, mind you) that these battery recalls had reached their end, here's another 1.3 million that are being returned to sender.
