Yeah, let's get this out of the way first, the SGH-i900 does share a design aesthetic with another handset we hear about all the time. That aside, the SGH-i900 seems set to bring everything we could ever hope -- or need, to be honest -- for in a Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro package. Measuring a scant 112 × 56 × 13, the i900 is finished in shiny metal, only features two buttons on the face, and what appears to be a fingerprint reader or perhaps a touch-sensitive pad. Loaded with HSDPA, a 3.5-inch 400 X 240 display, 5 megapixel cam with auto focus, 16GB of onboard memory, microSDHC support up to 8GB, TV-out, FM radio, Bluetooth, WiFi -- see what we're saying here? This thing could almost be a mini media center -- it'll definitely please our pockets. It also seems like two versions will be in the offing, the i900 branded as Samsung and the i908 branded as Anycall -- but sadly we're at a loss on how they differ. We'll definitely be keeping our eyes wide open watching for updates here, but in the meantime, follow the link for pages of pretty pictures and poorly translated Chinese.

[Via UnwiredView]

3M has been touting its mini-projectors for some time now (along with many others), but it looks like they're now finally a bit closer to landing in an actual product, with Samsung reportedly set to begin offering them later this year. What's not clear, unfortunately, is whether the projectors will actually be built into the cellphones (and if so, which ones), or simply offered as an attachment of some sort, but either way you can apparently expect to pay between $200 and $400 for the chance to spread a bit of visual pollution.

[Via Unwired View]

At first glance this handset looks boring enough to make even a seasoned professional cry, but hold up just one hot second: it has at least one cool feature that we'd be willing to be a day's wage (not really) that your phone can't do. The Samsung Guru200 -- follow-on to the recently released Guru100 -- features FM radio recording, putting an extra twist on the regular FM radio that's virtually standard on every cellphone sold across India. Otherwise, yeah, it really is as boring as it looks, if you don't count a few software twists designed to cater to the Indian market. Look for it to launch for Rs. 2,999, which works out to about $71.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Hands-on with the LG Vu, Samsung Access, and AT&T Mobile TV

Filed under: Handsets, Features, Multimedia, LG, Samsung, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

These days, voice is the tip of the iceberg. Carriers are always -- and we do mean always -- looking for crafty ways to boost their average revenue per user, and with everyone and their brother offering an unlimited voice plan at this point, it's about data and value-add services more than it ever has been before. To that end, Verizon and AT&T have embraced MediaFLO as a way to keep their subscribers entertained on the road to the tune of a few extra bucks per month. AT&T's service, simply christened Mobile TV, has just launched with a pair of devices from Samsung and LG; naturally, we wanted to know whether the phones were worth the $199 and $299 AT&T's asking, respectively -- but perhaps more importantly, we had to figure out whether the service was worth sucking another $15 a month out of our already-strained wallets.

Gallery: Hands-on with the LG Vu, Samsung Access, and AT&T Mobile TV

Continue reading Hands-on with the LG Vu, Samsung Access, and AT&T Mobile TV

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Korean smackdown: Samsung Soul, LG Secret reviewed

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Samsung, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

In case you hadn't heard, there's a battle raging for the hearts and minds of Europeans looking for a fashionable slider with a powerhouse camera. Both Samsung and LG are stepping up to the plate to address that very specific need this summer, with Samsung delivering the u900 Soul -- a phone it claims will be the last in its Ultra line -- and LG bringing the similarly named (and similarly spec'd) KF750 Secret. Initial reviews for both devices seem overwhelmingly positive, so don't expect them to necessarily help you choose which one to buy; instead, we suspect it might come down to brand preference, the Soul's nifty OLED d-pad, and the Secret's touchscreen. Both have HSDPA 2100 while rejecting North America's 3G airwaves, so for some of us, this battle is a bit of a moot point -- but for the rest of you, best of luck picking your '08 weapon of choice.

[Thanks, TI]

Read - MobileBurn reviews the Samsung Soul
Read - CNET UK reviews the LG Secret

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Samsung Glyde review roundup

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

The Samsung Glyde was one of the most hyped phones on an American carrier in recent memory leading up to its launch, and there's one small problem with that: it's hard to live up to the fanfare, no matter how good (or bad) the phone might be. A common early complaint coming out of the gate seems to be the lack of support for Verizon's MediaFLO-based VCAST TV service, a service that the Glyde's main competition, the Voyager, supports. The UI's also getting panned for being a little more confusing that it needs to be; compounding matters is the fact that Phone Scoop describes it as a "push UI" on account of a fiddly touchscreen. For what it's worth, it seems that the keyboard is at least quite good -- so if you can put up with the negatives, the Glyde might still have a place in your pocket. Otherwise, the Voyager's still looking awfully good, isn't it?

Read - LAPTOP Magazine (2.5 / 5 stars, "...limited by a poor UI and unreliable performance")
Read - Phone Scoop ("The Glyde pairs a few of the best things from the physical and touch worlds")
Read - PHONE Magazine ("The Verizon Glyde isn't a bad cellphone, but it's outshone by its rivals")

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Bell Canada set to unleash LG Vantage and Samsung Ace

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Samsung, Bell Mobility, Windows Mobile, EV-DO, CDMA

Bell Canada seem to have decided that cool, tricked out mobiles are what the customers are clamoring for, and we'd bet they're right. The Samsung Ace (on left) and LG Vantage are set to spill onto shelves in the very near term. The Ace is a dual-mode phone featuring both EV-DO connectivity and dual-band GSM -- No 3G in sight, sadly -- Windows Mobile 6 Standard, 1.3 megapixel camera -- seriously, why bother? -- microSD, and that lovely Blackjack look and feel. The Ace is set to launch May 12, though no word on pricing just yet. Also new on the scene is the LG Vantage, a really slick looking Slide-esque slider but with a touchscreen, 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and a microSD slot that'll allow up to 4GB of memory. The Vantage is set for launch on the 16th May and tentative pricing is set at $225 on a three year, $325 on two years, and $425 off contract. Well done Bell, nice to see a little more international roaming sans having to buy into a BlackBerry.

[Via MobileInCanada and terence889 on Howardforums]

One of the worst-kept secrets in Verizon's stable is finally getting official today; that's right, ladies and gentlemen, meet the Glyde from Samsung. Wearing CDMA guts underneath its F700 clothing, the fashion-friendly QWERTY slider offers a 2 megapixel cam with flash and autofocus, GPS, the full range of Bluetooth profiles, microSD slot, and a true HTML browser. Unlike its crosstown competition -- the LG Voyager -- the Glyde doesn't offer support for Verizon's VCAST TV service, but we imagine most folks will consider that a minor (read: nonexistent) inconvenience. Look for the phone to start circulating into retail channels this week for a princely $249.99 on contract after $50 rebate.

Gallery: Verizon launches the Samsung Glyde

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Samsung launches Instinct promotional site

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Sprint, EV-DO, CDMA

Just in case you haven't learned enough about the forthcoming Samsung Instinct from our hands-on gallery / UI video walkthrough, Sammy has launched a promotional website designed to give you the skinny. Within the site, you can peer at a handful of press shots, get schooled on all of its features and sign up to be notified when it's ready for your hands to be wrapped around it. Nothing too exciting, but those with the Instinct high on their list of next mobile to own will surely find it worth the click over.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

FCC signs off on Samsung i770 -- global version of Verizon's i760?

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Windows Mobile, GSM, EV-DO, CDMA

Remember when we caught wind that Verizon was prepping a worldband version Samsung's i760 Windows Mobile piece? That rumor's suddenly gained a lot more credence now that we've seen a so-called SCH-i770 pass through the FCC's hallowed halls, especially considering the device outline's uncanny resemblance to that of the aforementioned i760. We'd previously heard that there might be some HSDPA on board, and while we're not seeing any evidence of that from the FCC's test reports, we can confirm that it'll feature EV-DO, WiFi, and Bluetooth in addition to all the GSM you'll need to get by while roaming through mysterious foreign lands. No word on when we might actually see an announcement about this one, but we imagine Verizon doesn't want to wait that much longer -- the i760 design isn't getting any younger, y'know.

[Via Phone Scoop]

<a href=https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=818331&fcc_id='A3LSCHI770'>Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Samsung Slash slider coming soon to Virgin Mobile

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Virgin Mobile, EV-DO, CDMA

Look out, Virgin Mobile subscribers -- Samsung's sliding you one more handset option with its forthcoming Slash. Posted now on the carrier's own website, said mobile packs integrated Bluetooth, a color display, voice dialing, web access and a talk time of 3.5-hours. Additionally, it tips the scales at just 3-ounces and measures 3.8- x 1.8- x 0.7-inches. Unfortunately, we're still waiting on the real details (you know, resolution, price, release date, whether it works in subarctic temperatures, etc.), but feel free to keep a close eye on the read link as its inevitable launch date draws near.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Samsung's new SGH-P960 packs a DVR

While some manufacturers stay home pouting about mobile TV's slow uptake in Europe, Samsung isn't giving up on the Euro DVB-H market just yet, hoping to entice viewers with better features. The company's new SGH-P960 adds integrated DVR functionality, like pausing live TV when it rings, meaning you won't miss any of the action on the slider's 2.6-inch, 240 x 320 screen. Other TV niceties include picture-in-picture, an on-screen programming guide, and an integrated Bang & Olufsen amplifier. A 3 megapixel cam with LED flash on the back rounds out what sounds like a nice package, but with no word on price or availability outside of Europe it's hard to get too excited.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tim Stevens

Video: AT&T launching Mobile TV May 4th, demonstrated on LG Vu

Filed under: Handsets, Multimedia, LG, Samsung, ATT

MediaFLO is about to cut loose for AT&T customers this morning and we've got video to prove it. After the break you'll find Mobile TV running on LG's new $300 (2-year, after $100 rebate) Vu, one of just two Mobile TV compatible handsets launching on AT&T May 4th -- the other being the $200 (2-year, after $100 rebate) Samsung Access. Performance looks reasonably snappy when scrolling through the channel guide although some of the exclusive PIX and CNN Mobile Live content is not yet available. S'ok, AT&T has three more days to throw the big blue switch on the broadcast TV service which includes a $15/month unlimited Mobile TV access plan. Hear that Verizon? AT&T's about to step all over your portable TV game in the US market.

[Via MyFoxUtah]
Continue reading Video: AT&T launching Mobile TV May 4th, demonstrated on LG Vu

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

China Mobile delivers production 3G network in time for Olympics

A nice, thick blanket of 3G might still be years away for China, but who the heck knows -- if they can keep fast-tracking it like they're doing here, maybe they can tighten up that schedule just a teensy bit. After kicking off a trial... like, whoa, this month, China Mobile has already blessed a large enough swath of its nascent TD-SCDMA coverage to deliver some 15,000 compatible Samsung handsets, data cards, and 3 million yuan (about $430,000) worth of minutes to the Beijing Olympic Games' organizing committee this week. It's said that the hardware will be doled out to staff and volunteers helping to get the Games in order, giving them something to do with their leisure hours (we suppose) as they put the finishing touches on the many event venues spotting the city, and presumably, China will be working hard to play up its technological achievement come game time later this year. If you can call a proprietary 3G protocol that lags its CDMA and WCDMA competition by years a "technical achievement," anyway.

[Via mocoNews]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Verizon to launch Samsung Glyde on May 9

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

We've learned from a trusted source that one of the jewels in Verizon's summer 2008 crown, the Samsung Glyde, will finally freaking launch on May 9. Despite a wealth of both in-the-wild and press quality photography of the phone over the past few weeks, it's been less and less clear when exactly Verizon was planning on actually offering it, so we're glad to finally have a date -- particularly considering that it's less than two weeks away. That'll give the Glyde a few comfortable weeks atop the heap ahead of the Dare's arrival, so enjoy it while you can, Samsung.

Update: It'll be $299.99 on a two-year plan before rebate, $369.99 on a one-year, and $419.99 with no strings attached.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Samsung's Anycall J708 is sexy but unexciting

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, GSM, EDGE

Fans of mid and low-end cell phones who happen to live in Hong Kong can add another handset to their lust list, the Samsung Anycall J708, which is quite a sexy and diminutive handset considering its price. The 0.6-inch thick slider costs 1,480 HKD (about $190), which means a slim feature list, but there's plenty for the media-hungry to be getting on with: H.263 and MPEG4 video playback, MP3 and AAC audio playback, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, a micro SD slot, a 1.3 megapixel camera and EDGE. In the end, it's always nice to see a low-end phone that doesn't look like someone folded a three year old candybar in half and slapped a new coat of paint on it.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Terrence O'Brien

Hands-on with the Samsung i640v

Filed under: Handsets, Features, Samsung, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Windows Mobile Standard devices are a whole heck of a lot more refined now than they were in the early days, aren't they? Manufacturers have figured out what form factors seem to work best, the quality of the hardware has improved by leaps and bounds (though it admittedly can't ever really be good enough), and the handsets continue to find ways to squeeze blood out of the WinMo 6 stone by way of new capabilities and new skins. The i640v from Samsung -- a Vodafone exclusive for the moment, hence the "v" -- represents the pinnacle of everything Samsung has learned about making these non-touchscreen smartphones over the last several years, and we can honestly say it's one of the most refined and most attractive Windows Mobile phones we've ever used, period. It's pleasantly compact when closed, sliding open to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard only when needed, and the mirrored finish with chrome accents gives it a high-end touch without crossing the gaudy line. The nav wheel spins just like the BlackJack II's, but the larger diameter is a welcome addition and makes navigating Vodafone's custom skin a breeze.

Samsung, T-Mobile, AT&T -- we implore you, bring a version of this to the States, preferably one with 3G that we can use, k? Thanks!

Thanks to the good folks at Wireless Imports for the hookup!

Still, we can definitely appreciate the lo-fi approach given the $65 sticker, and considering that it measures in at just 4.07- x 1.73- x 0.58-inches, we can certainly see quite a few folks picking one up to handle calling, and well, more calling. You'll find dual-band GSM support, speakerphone / SMS functionality and a battery that'll provide around 2.8-hours of talk time. No word on a price just yet, but word on street has this phone available as we speak in Hong Kong.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Samsung bringing mobile TV to Brazil with V820L

Filed under: Handsets, Multimedia, Samsung, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Have 1,499 reais (about $904) to blow? Live in or around Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, or Rio de Janeiro, Brazil? Great, because Samsung has a little something it wants to show you. The V820L pivoting flip is a capable 3G phone in its own right, complete with Bluetooth, a 2 megapixel cam, microSD expansion, and a front-facing secondary cam for video calls, but it also adds digital TV reception for Brazil's nascent ISDB-T spectrum. The relatively expansive 2.6 inch display should be a boon for watching your favorite Portuguese-language programming on the go, though it sounds like the limited coverage could be a big bummer at this point until broadcasters have the time to build out the network just a bit. It sounds like carriers might subsidize the phone a bit to knock down that stratospheric price tag, but even so -- just how much do we want to pay for a few square miles of entertainment?

[Image via Abril.com, thanks Marcelo R.]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sprint acknowledges that crack is good, or Instinct is bad

Spotted on Wired, we're not quite sure what to make of this ad for Sprint's upcoming Samsung Instinct; we've never much cared for fruits or other fillings in our breakfast batters, but perhaps that's just us.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Best Buy to offer Samsung Glyde free on contract?

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Verizon Wireless

It seems like a healthy contingent of folks are getting amped for the imminent release of Glyde on Verizon, but we'd always assumed that those folks would be paying a buck or two for the privilege of sporting Samsung's latest and greatest in their pockets on day one. Well, turns out that may not be the case: we've been sent a tip showing what appears to be a screen shot out of Best Buy's system, indicating that it'll be free with any rate plan activation or upgrade. Skepticism is always in order with these sorts of things because even if the screen shot is legit, it's entirely plausible that Best Buy just has it's signals crossed as it preps for launch -- but we can always hope, can't we?

[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Shortage of Samsung Glyde eye candy: solved

Filed under: Handsets, Features, Samsung, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

As far as we're concerned, right up until the Glyde is released, there's simply no such thing as "too many Glyde shots." Like the phone or hate it, are we at least all in agreement there? The latest round brings us a handful of photos of a dummy model, presumably destined for a Verizon or authorized dealer store somewhere within the US of A. Our initial impression is that it's just a tad thicker than we'd like, but we owe it to ourselves (and Verizon, for that matter) to hold off on panning the bulge until we feel it for ourselves. Click on, people!

Gallery: Shortage of Samsung Glyde eye candy: solved

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Samsung Soul now making beautiful music in Europe

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Samsung's staying true to its word back at MWC in February, announcing that the Soul slider is now starting to become available in parts of Europe with distribution expanding through the remainder of this month and May. Initial targets for the "flagship" model (Samsung's wording, not ours) are France, the UK, and Germany, with "major European carriers" promised to throw their weight behind the launch. Power features on the Soul include a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with face detection and image stabilization, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and an FM radio with RDS, but the most visually distinctive goody on the phone clearly has to be its OLED-powered 5-way nav rocker that changes function based on the phone's mode. What isn't on the Soul's feature list is HSDPA 850 / 1900 (or even GSM 850, for that matter) -- so unless AT&T or T-Mobile want to foot the bill to bring a new version of this puppy stateside, its estimated asking price of €400 ($632 or so) might be better left in the average American's wallet.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Samsung skips the touchscreen, patents gesture-based phone interface

Samsung's been getting pretty creative with cell cameras lately -- the Instinct lets you pan around web pages by tracking movement with the camera, for example -- but the company's latest patent application, for a gesture-based phone interface, might be a little less practical. The idea is to use the phone's camera to track your hand movements, which, from the drawings, should have you looking insane on the subway in no time. Of course, we've all been guilty of waving at and even talking to our devices when they're acting up, so maybe a little feedback wouldn't be a bad thing -- there's one gesture we'd definitely like to see programmed in there.

[Via Textually.org]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

Samsung aiming for water-powered cellphones by 2010

We've seen quite a few prototype fuel-cell powered mobile devices, but Samsung's upping the ante by predicting that we'll all be running our phones on water by 2010. The company says it's developed a method to generate hydrogen by exposing water to metal, but the details are a little shaky -- we're guessing it's similar to the system used in the HydroPak generator, but it's hard to tell. Still, we've got no reason to doubt Samsung's engineers, who say the system currently provides about 10 hours of use, or about five days of average cell usage, and will eventually allow users to simply top off and go. That's every traveler's dream -- let's get this to market, Sammy.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

Samsung's SCH-W599 enjoys both GSM / CDMA connectivity, long walks in park

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, China Unicom, GSM, CDMA

This handset sports both 800MHz CDMA and also dual-band GSM -- so yeah, not so terribly useful over here -- 2 megapixel camera, FM radio, Bluetooth, and a 2.4-inch touchscreen with handwriting recognition. Form factor is pretty standard Samsung fare, though thicker than we've seen from them in recent efforts. Other notables include a dual-sim slot under the bonnet and VibTonz feedback from the touchscreen. Letting the Instinct bask in the limelight back at CTIA earlier this month, Samsung has gone and saved a three-pack of fancy new phones for Dutch show Televisie 2008 this week. First up, the U800 (pictured) is the latest Ultra Edition piece, and at 9.8mm thick, the candybar appears ready for the job -- not to say the 3.2 megapixel camera or 3G radio hurt much, either.

Next, the L870 represents Samsung's newest S60 entry, seemingly slotting in under the N95-killing G810 but still managing to offer a full 3 megapixels on the cam along with Bluetooth, 3G, and quadband GSM. Give us triband HSDPA here, Samsung, and we can be besties forever.

Finally, the long-rumored i900 finally gets some face time, looking ripe to take on LG's fashionable KS20 with UMTS (HSDPA too, if we had to wager a guess), a full 5 megapixels of shooting power, WiFi, and Windows Mobile 6.1. No word yet on when we might be seeing any of these outside the safe confines of a trade show floor, but at least we know they're all real now.

[Via Unwired View]

Read - Samsung U800
Read - Samsung L870
Read - Samsung i900

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Samsung's t339 for T-Mobile: yep, it does HotSpot@Home

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, T-Mobile, GSM, EDGE

Thanks to a few BlackBerrys, we can keep our standard "there aren't any HotSpot@Home-compatible smartphones!" argument to a minimum here, but still -- you've gotta admit that T-Mobile's seriously going overboard with the midrange WiFi handsets. It looks like the upcoming t339 flip will be yet another, thanks to FCC documentation showing the presence of 802.11 aboard its thin, brownish shell. For what it's worth, this could end up being the sexiest HotSpot@Home dumbphone yet (we're not huge fans of the Katalyst's look, we admit), but still, guys, give us an N95 or something. Please. Sliders with numeric keypads aren't exactly the most common form factor for Windows Mobile handsets to begin with, but throw in some HSUPA and you've got a very rare combo indeed. Samsung's SCH-M470 fits that most unusual bill, throwing in a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and WiFi -- not to say you'll necessarily need it while you're cruising along at the sickeningly fast speeds the HSPA specification originally intended. Unfortunately, this one won't find its way out of Korea, but the presence of HSUPA here is a good sign for smartphones of all creeds in the near term; 'course, if you happen to find yourself in Seoul, you'll be able to grab one for somewhere between 600,000 and 700,000 won (about $616 to $718).

[Via Slashphone]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sprint licenses Visual Voicemail for the Samsung Instinct

Filed under: Handsets, Software, Samsung, Sprint

It looks like Samsung's Instinct won't just be kinda-sorta doing some iPhone stuff -- it will be doing actual iPhone stuff. Sprint announced that it has licensed Klausner's Visual Voicemail (yes, Visual Voicemail) for use in the familiar looking device, adding weight to the argument that this is the carrier's official play for the iPhone market. If you'll recall, Klausner sued AT&T and Apple over the feature, which it claims violated two of its patents. Now all they need to do is throw Cover Flow, Google Maps integration, and some wiggly icons on there, and this race will really get heated.

[Via I4U News]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Chilling out to some telly on the Samsung Access

Filed under: Handsets, Features, Multimedia, Samsung, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

The Vu is going to end up stealing the bulk of the spotlight when AT&T's initial Mobile TV devices launch in May, but the Samsung Access has one key advantage over its sexier stablemate: aggressive pricing. The wide-load candybar (thanks to the landscape display) will run $100 less than the Vu while offering the same quantity and quality of brainpower-sapping television. In fact, we imagine there'll be a contingent of folks who actually prefer the physical keypad (gasp!). We wish Samsung had put just a little bit more thought and energy into the Access' physical design -- there's no rule saying a $199 phone has to be ugly, last time we checked -- but it's functional, looks and feels solid, and you'll still manage to impress the neighbors when you fire up CNN. AT&T had a functional MediaFLO node in Las Vegas, as evidenced by the glorious footage we took in while hanging out at the Access' kiosk; hit the gallery for some more visuals of the device in action.

Gallery: Chilling out to some telly on the Samsung Access

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

LG LX400, Motorola V950, and pair of Samsungs round out Sprint's QChat fare

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Sprint, EV-DO, CDMA

As we've long known, Sanyo isn't the only company contributing goodies to the opening volley of CDMA Direct Connect devices for Sprint -- LG, Motorola, and Samsung all want in on the action, too. LG brings the LX400, featuring a 1.3 megapixel camera in a burgundy shell; it's not our cup of tea, but folks looking for something on the non-rugged side of the PTT spectrum might find their soulmate here. Next up, the Motorola V950 is pretty notable since it marks Moto's inevitable foray away from its own iDEN tech and toward something just a little more modern to support the push-to-talk functionality its users so deeply love. It's a media powerhouse, too, thanks to external music controls, a microSD slot, stereo Bluetooth, and a 2 megapixel cam. Finally, Samsung comes to the table with two models: the rubberized Z400 (surprisingly appearing to be the most hardcore of the foursome) that trades consumer-friendly features for a tough shell -- though they've still felt the need to slap a 1.3 megapixel cam on there -- and the Z700, a fancy, refined set that looks fit for duty in the most fancy of pockets and shares much of its spec sheet with the Moto V950. Pricing and availability haven't been announced for any of the four, but we imagine they'll be pretty reasonable given the overall modesty across the line.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Hands-on with Samsung's Instinct

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Sprint, EV-DO, CDMA

Samsung and Sprint were keeping their cards close all day today but we finally had a chance to check out Samsung's Instinct up close and personal. The handset's look and feel is really top notch, materials, finish, and the oh-so-glossy -- but hard to shoot -- screen is sweet. Haptics for touch feedback are here as well, and aside from some strange behavior while scrolling, was a pretty useful feature for letting you know you'd actually done something -- it was most noticeable, and most useful when typing. Not a bad effort, look for this to hit Sprint in June. Follow the link to the gallery.

Gallery: Hands-on with Samsung's Instinct

One ultra-glossy phone plus a dozen or so overly ornate chandeliers is a recipe for video disaster, and indeed, we managed to capture the beautiful outline of said chandeliers in far more detail than we ever intended here. It's the price we pay for demanding mirror-finish touchscreens, we guess, but we think we still managed to convey a fair bit about the Instinct's distinctive user interface here. First of all, it wasn't nearly as snappy as we'd have liked it to be, but the phone's not hitting retail for a couple months yet so we'll cut 'em some slack while they're ironing out the final kinks in the firmware. The web navigation gestures were a little choppy, too, though we appreciated the dedicated "birdseye" key that zooms out so the entire page can be seen at once; a red box indicated where you'll be when you zoom back in. Bottom line? We get the impression that Samsung's delivering form over function here, but hey, for a good number of us, that's a sacrifice we're willing to make.
Continue reading Video: Samsung Instinct UI walkthrough

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Samsung's Soul train makes stop in USA, no plans to get sold here

If you thought Samsung's Soul would be content with sitting in Barcelona, you've never had the pleasure of vacationing in Las Vegas. Sure enough, the Soul is following the HTC Touch Dual in making its US debut at CTIA 2008, and it's quite alright if your palms are already beginning to get sweaty. After all, what else would you expect from looking forward to a quad-band / HSDPA 7.2Mbps slider with a 2.2-inch QVGA display, 5-megapixel camera (with QVGA movie mode), Bluetooth 2.0, microSD expansion slot and Magical Touch navigation? Beyond that, the long-awaited miCoach is also making its US debut in the desert, along with a number of other global handsets (F480, F400 and G810). The sad part here is that none of the mobiles are actually slated to go on sale here in America -- yeah, it's a bit depressing to know they're sitting within our borders as we speak and won't be available for purchase, but there's always next year (right?).

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Sprint hits back with the Samsung Instinct

See that? That's the Samsung Instinct, due to hit Sprint in June. Better get used to it, because Sprint's about to start hyping it with the biggest marketing push in its history -- it's going to drop some $100M on this lil' guy. Of course, there's no escaping the comparison to a certain other touchscreen candybar phone, and Sprint's not backing down from a fight -- it's just being willfully obtuse, saying that while the Instinct wasn't developed in response to the iPhone, the company recognized that it needed "a product from a usability standpoint that can compete." Um, sure. Samsung and Sprint worked together to simplify the UI, which features a reconfigurable home screen, music, and TV features, but we're going to hold off judgment until we get a look at the browser in person a little later. One more shot after the break.

[Thanks, Billytickets]
Continue reading Sprint hits back with the Samsung Instinct

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

Cricket emits SCH-r430 MyShot / SCH-r210 Spex AWS handsets
