Canada, HSDPA. What's the first carrier that comes to mind? No, not Fido, silly -- Rogers, of course! Makes a lot of sense, then, that Canada's GSM behemoth would be getting dibs on RIM's HSDPA-compatible hotness, the Bold -- not to say we didn't expect it, anyway -- and a new page posted over on Rogers' site encourages interested individuals to sign up to be notified when the device becomes available in their neck of the woods. Unfortunately, there's nary a clue here on exactly when Rogers customers will be able to mosey into the store of their choice and pick one up, but "summer" is a safe (and vague) bet.

[Thanks, Gurkiran]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

BlackBerry 9000 gets a very early review

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Rogers Wireless

We're all about reviews of products before they're released, but reviewing something before it's even been officially confirmed by a company is its own special brand of magnificent. Granted, these are more like the hands-on impressions of a self-confessed BlackBerry addict, who was willing to fork over $828 US on the off chance that the eBay auction the other day was actually legit. A week later Kevin of CrackBerry.com has the BlackBerry 9000 in hand and seems to be loving every minute of it. Apparently the keyboard is better than the 8800 series, the OS4.6 is smooth, fast and pretty, and the 480 x 320 LCD is "awesome." And don't get Kevin started on 3G: the logo alone brought a tear to his eye -- we're clearly dealing with a bona fide fanboy here. That said, it's an encouraging sign to see all those leaked shots weren't just for show, there's a real-live performer behind the legend. Kevin's major caveat is the size and weight of the phone, compared to his Curve, but we're sure the $828 hole in his checking account will have him coming to terms with that drawback in the near future. He'll be posting more details and impressions as he goes.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

8GB Nokia N95 lands on Rogers, sticks tongue out at AT&T

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Rogers Wireless, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Get this: the first North American carrier to offer up Nokia's 8GB N95 isn't AT&T. Heck, it's not even a US-based operator. No friends, it's Canada's own Rogers Wireless. Just as we had heard late last month, the N95 8GB has officially landed in the Great North, and starting on May 6th, consumers up that way will be able to secure one for a hefty $399.99 with a three-year activation on the Rogers Vision Unlimited On-Device Mobile Browsing Plan. Don't weep too heavily, AT&T users -- your time should be coming soon.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

iPhone finally coming to Canada

Filed under: Handsets, Rogers Wireless, Announcements, Apple

For a phone that came out in 2006, it's kinda surprising how much interest (both from carriers and end users) that the Nokia N95 series continues to enjoy. With any luck, we'll be seeing it launch on AT&T later this year -- but Rogers is apparently poised to beat 'em to the punch. Mobile In Canada reports that Canada's 800-pound GSM behemoth intends to launch the N95 (the North American, non-8GB model, as far as we can tell) as early as May 2nd -- which, alongside the already-launched Sony Ericsson K850i, makes for a powerful one-two combo of 5 megapixel 3G Europhones. Only time will tell, but we're feeling good about this one, folks; only question is, N95 8GB next?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Rogers pondering a UMA service called "Home Calling Zone"?

Filed under: Handsets, Rogers Wireless, EDGE, HSDPA

Well this is fun, apparently Rogers Wireless -- and likely FIDO -- is set to offer a UMA service (to bridge their GSM network with your home network) come May this year. Purportedly dubbed the Rogers Home Calling Zone, the service would roll out to consumer customers -- no mention in the "news" about Business, yet -- for $15 a month for local calling and $20 for unlimited long distance in Canada. The BlackBerry Pearl 8120 and a lower-end Nokia handset are apparently the launch handsets for the service -- if it proves true, and we think it likely will. You can expect more news once we get it, of course.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

Rogers getting the LG Vu in May, too

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Rogers Wireless, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

It turns out that AT&T won't be the only network picking up the Americanized version of LG's Prada -- the blacked-out, touch-tastic Vu -- come this May; Rogers wants in on the action up north of the border, too, and they'll be keeping pace with their GSM brethren below the St. Lawrence by launching the phone in the very same time frame. We can only assume that Rogers will be launching the CU915 variant (or TU915, as it'll probably come to be known to them) since the carrier doesn't feature a MediaFLO network that would warrant the need for the CU920's additional hardware and expense. As we already know, the phone will feature a 2 megapixel camera, HSDPA, microSD expansion, and it comes as no surprise that the phone will support access to the full host of Rogers' media services. It looks like pricing will be announced closer to launch, but you might want to just start putting away the occasional dollar now, because this one ain't exactly going out the door free on contract if you catch our drift.

[Via Mobile In Canada]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Rogers slated to get Novatel X950D and MC950D data cards

Filed under: Peripherals, Others, Rogers Wireless, Misc
Rogers seems set to sponge as much cake as they can out of your overtaxed mobile pockets with the announcement of two new HSPA data devices, the Novatel X950D and MC950D. We've seen the USB-friendly MC950D pop up before, but as a refresh: it rocks 7.2 Mbps triple-band HSPA, supports most popular OSes, quad-band GPRS / EDGE, and may well still be the world's smallest HSPA USB modem. The X950D, however, will be making its worldwide debut on the friendly Canadian provider's network, and we're sure a goodly pile of Canadians will be whooping it up at this news. Sporting triple-band HSPA, Mac and Windows-friendly, quad-band GPRS / EDGE, Novatel's newest express port product also features backwards compatibility with a handy PCMCIA adapter. Pricing on both is apparently the same: $49.99 on a three-year contract. Of course, with data rates what they are, that $50 is definitely gonna get you in a whole heap of trouble if you don't mind your bits.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

Rogers set to launch Nokia 5310 on Pay As You Go plan

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Rogers Wireless, GSM, EDGE

It's a little behind schedule, but we're hearing that one of the two updated GSM BlackBerry Pearls, the 8110, is finally en route to Rogers dealers across Canada. While the 8120 features WiFi, the 8110 makes do with integrated GPS along with most of the other things that have made the revised models great: a redone keypad, external microSD slot, and integrated 3.5mm headphone jack, just to name a few. Rogers' Flex Rate Plan for PC Cards seem set to offer heavy data consumers a much needed break in the sometimes staggering world of wireless data prices. Plans range from $65 a month for 1 GB -- tethering is a go, of course -- to $100 a month for 5 GB of data. The surprising part of the plan is that it is tiered, so if you sign up on a 1 GB plan but use 1.2, you'll simply be bumped up to the tier 2 $75 a month plan, and not charged overages by the KB. Pretty grand news for the data greedy, thank you Rogers, job well done. Now, how about some smaller tiers for the light users?

[Thanks, Treatz]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

iPhone invading Canada tomorrow?

Filed under: Handsets, Rogers Wireless, GSM, EDGE, Announcements, Apple, OS X

According to a report from the market-mindful Bloomberg, old Jobsy could be dropping the iPhone on Canada come tomorrow's keynote. If you believe what RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky says (and that's a big if), Apple will unleash the phone via Rogers Communications -- the country's largest mobile service provider. "There's a very good chance that Apple will announce or discuss some kind of other carrier roll-outs, beyond the ones it has done in Europe and the U.S." He said, adding that, "There is definitely very strong demand and interest here." To which we say, "Duh," and, "Hey, we've heard this before." Though we're not sure Steve will have time for the Canadian launch in his keynote, what with all the algae-based hard drives, unicorn laptops, and rays of pure energy he'll be introducing.

[Thanks, Paolo]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

RIM's BlackBerry 8xxx looks Rogers-bound

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Rogers Wireless, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

So Boy Genius Report did a little spelunking with his Vodafone slide deck-o-scoopage and discovered a most amazing thing: someone was under the impression that you could cover up something you didn't want to be seen with a black box on an editable layer and have it magically go away, never to be seen again. Unfortunately for that individual (and fortunately for all of us), that couldn't be further from the truth; he simply nudged the box away from its original location along the BlackBerry 8xxx's bottom edge and discovered -- gasp! -- a carrier name. Turns out the 8xxx being shown in Voda's lineup was Rogers branded, not Vodafone, and we can see how it might be a bit of a faux pas to show another carrier's kit in your slide deck. Good news for Rogers customers, though, particularly those with thumbs of steel or three-piece suits.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

40MHz of Canadian spectrum auction set aside for newcomers

Filed under: Bell Mobility, Rogers Wireless, Telus Mobility, Misc
Although America's upcoming 700MHz spectrum auction could see a newcomer or two join the fold, Canada's auction is actually calling for it. Reportedly, Industry Minister Jim Prentice made known that 40MHz of the 105MHz of spectrum available for bidding would be "set aside for newcomers to the industry," hinting that more competition could eventually lead to lower cellphone rates across the nation. He went on to say that the "introduction of new service providers would help to make Canada's wireless market more dynamic, more competitive, and more innovative," and moreover, only companies that hold less than 10-percent of revenues in that market would be allowed to bid for the luscious 40MHz segment. As expected, big boys in the biz are none too pleased about the announcement, with Telus executive vice-president Janet Yale even going so far as to say that it believed the move "wouldn't be in the best interest of consumers or telecom industry overall."
TUAW has posted up a potentially sweet holiday tidbit with the Canadian Apple store showing an iPhone in its holiday gift guide. Of course, as some clever reader has pointed out, the Italian Apple store is also showing an iPhone with a bit of cut and paste wizardry, could this be a case of just a template mistake on Apple's part? We know iPhone's coming to the Great White North -- or at least are pretty sure -- and the holidays do make sense, but until we hear something official, we'd lean toward error on this one. Check your local site and post back with your findings, make a game of it.

[Via TUAW]

Now why, dear readers, would the Apple store at the Eaton Centre in Ontario, Canada, be hosting an iPhone workshop? Could it be that the iPhone is headed to colder climes in time enough for the holidays? Or is it just a simple mistake? Judge for yourself. We just hope this little mishap doesn't get that Eaton Centre Apple events coordinator fired.

Oh, and that not-so-"unlimited" data the iPhone was getting in the UK on O2? Turns out that apparently the carrier's reversed its decision to cap iPhone users' data at a mere 100-200MB, apparently stating, "There is no limit on the monthly network usage. However if we feel that your activities are so excessive that other customers are detrimentally affected, we may give you a written warning (by email or otherwise)." We're not really sure what the fuss is about, O2's rolling out a legacy EDGE network specifically for the use of iPhone users, why fuss over a device that can't be (easily) tethered to a laptop and has slow-ass EDGE data and quick WiFi?

Read - Apple schedules iPhone workshop in Canada [Thanks, Ethan]
Read - O2 scraps limited-unlimited data [Via TUAW]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Rogers Wireless launches HTC Touch

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Rogers Wireless, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE

Today is shaping up to be Rogers Wireless day in these parts, as the announcement of a 7.2 Mbps HSPA trial has fired up in Montreal and Brampton -- Brampton? According to a Boy Genius Report that shows an alleged leaked advertisement, Rogers could be launching the iPhone on its network on December 7th. You're gonna need to take this with a big grain of salt though: the depicted iPhone doesn't show the Rogers logo on the actual iPhone, a red bow effect awkwardly cuts through text on the iPhone, and some comments point out that the Rogers logo is drawn incorrectly. We're leaning towards Photoshop job at this point -- what happened to the trademark dispute? -- but if it's true, Canadians could be looking at paying $499.99 of their dollars plus signing up to a three year contract in order to pick up their own iPhone. Is the border really that far?

[Thanks, Rich]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Conrad Quilty-Harper

Molson contest hints at Canadian iPhone launch in January

Filed under: Handsets, Rogers Wireless, Apple

We've certainly had plenty of hints that the iPhone was headed to Rogers in Canada sooner or later, but it looks like those rumors may now be reaching the boiling point, with a new Molson contest offering the clearest indication yet of the iPhone's launch in Canada. As you can see above, the contest rules clearly state that the phone will be available on Rogers starting in January 2008, and that the winners will have to pay for the service charges themselves. It also lists the iPhone with a value of $800, which is more than a little curious especially given the now mighty loonie. According to The Globe & Mail, a Rogers spokeswoman says the contest came as a surprise, adding that "Molson is speculating and that Rogers wouldn't launch the iPhone this way." Either way, it seems like we should know more soon enough, unless Molson has plans to deal some unhappy contest winners.

[Via Mobile in Canada, thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: Well, it looks like this rumor has been put squarely on the back burner, with The Globe & Mail now reporting that Molson has pulled the iPhone as a prize after admitting they "made a mistake." Not wanting be outdone by its rival -- Telus Mobility -- could Rogers Wireless be planning to launch the HTC Touch? Signs are starting to point to yes with internet ads begin to pop up depicting an upcoming launch for the Canadian carrier. Just in case you've been in hiding for the last six months, we'll run down the specs again: Windows Mobile 6 Professional combined with HTC's TouchFlo interface, 2 megapixel shooter with expandable memory via microSD, 128MB of ROM and 64MB of RAM, and Bluetooth 2.0 rounding out the feature set. Cities fortunate enough to make the cut include Vancouver, Winnipeg, Regina, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City among a smattering of others. The carrier's official branding for its 3G services is "Vision" -- a curious homage to Sprint's EV-DO network in the US -- though Rogers gets the crown for the cool factor here thanks to its true video calling capability, the only carrier in North America to offer the feature (ahem, AT&T?). Given the fact that Rogers is careful to call the network "HSPA" (as opposed to "HSDPA") we imagine high-speed uploads are in the cards, too. As wireless carriers up north rack in close to $800 million a year in said fees, they continue to brand the fees as required by the Canadian Radio-Television Commission -- even though the Government says that fees are no longer valid and don't need to be charged. Carriers were whacking Canadians with charges ranging from $6.95 for Rogers and Telus and up to $8.95 for Bell customers. Naturally, that kind of apparent overcharging can only lead to one thing: a class-action lawsuit. Maybe your PR peeps aren't on the ball, guys, but seriously -- stop trying to confuse us by announcing products that have been out for weeks. Sony Ericsson has, for some reason, (re)announced the W580i today following an original announcement way back in March and launches on Rogers and AT&T in August. Features are the same as they were the first time around: quadband GSM plus EDGE, Shake Control, 2 megapixel camera, A2DP, integrated FM radio, and availability in black, gray, and white. Look, if you don't have anything new to tell us about, that's cool! Promotional stuff has apparently been spotted bearing both devices, with the Q9h launching any minute now for $249.99 on a three-year agreement. No word on Kaiser pricing yet, but we'd imagine it would go for a touch more. AT&T customers still have a grueling wait ahead of them (apparently) for an official Windows Mobile 6 update to their Treo 750s, but our buddies north of the border are on the ball. Canada's GSM grandpappy, Rogers, has finally gotten around to launching the device -- a bit late, yes, but with Windows Mobile 6 and enabled HSDPA out of the gate. Normally we'd say the timing sucks with a newer product having just launched overseas, but let's be honest: between the Treo 500 and the 750, we're sure there are still plenty of folks willing to take the older model. Pick it up now for $599 CAD (about $584) on a two-year contract, or a far more palatable $249 CAD (about $243) on a three-year.

[Via the::unwired]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Rogers Wireless puts Canadians on hold for iPhone

Filed under: Handsets, Rogers Wireless, Apple
Canadians who were hoping for an iPhone announcement from Rogers in the near future may as well put their wallets aways as Ted and the boys at Rogers still don't have a date. Citing Canada's smaller cellular market as one possible reason, Rogers CEO Nadir Mohamed said the device would likely go on sale in Europe before Canada. Rogers spokesperson Jan Innes added that the two sides aren't currently in chats about the handset, but refused to comment on if they had been in the past -- though seriously, they're nuts if they haven't been. How ironic. In the States, Helio, one of the smallest, scrappiest, and arguably most innovative carriers in the game was the first to roll deep with MySpace integration -- but in Canada, it's Rogers, the stodgy, 800 pound gorilla of carriers. Canada's largest GSM carrier has announced the availability of MySpace Mobile this month, bringing boatloads of productivity-killing social networking capability to a handful of its phones. Specifically, it looks like Rogers is listing the Samsung A516 and A706, Sony Ericsson W580 and W810, and LG TU500 as compatible. MySpacin' comes at a price, though: it runs $5 CAD (about $4.70) per month.

[Thanks, Brian B.]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Rogers Wireless to get HTC TyTN II?

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Rogers Wireless, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA

Rogers Wireless has rolled out the lovely W580i slider from Sony Ericsson, a Walkman-branded piece first introduced late in the first quarter of the year. Though data tops out at EDGE speeds (this is Sony Ericsson, after all), the handset offers an integrated FM radio, 2 megapixel cam, A2DP support, pedometer, and Memory Stick Micro expansion. Grab it now for $150 Canadian (about $142) on a three-year contract.

[Via HowardChui.com]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Rogers Wireless banning MP3 ringtones on its handsets?

It's the situation most of us love to hate: we buy that new, shiny handset with full MP3 capability to supplant that fully-fledged, big-gig DAP only to find out that MP3 files -- as clips or songs -- can't be used as ringtones. Sure, there are sometimes workarounds and hacks, but should anyone really have to go through all that? Music-based handset crippling may be coming to Canada's Rogers Wireless, as word on the street is that phones sold by the carrier, like the Nokia 5300, won't allow non-DRMed MP3 files as ringtones. We find this ludicrous on music-centric handset, but reports are that the requirement was at the behest of the music industry (who else). If you're a Rogers subscriber and are locked out of using your own homebrew MP3 clips as ringtones, we'll take it that you're miffed, big time. We gotta go DRM those MP3 files of some barking dogs we have, so catch ya later.

[Via mocoNews and BoingBoing]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Brian White

No iPhone eh? Rogers Wireless' CFO Bill Linton was quoted saying "The truth is we aren't very far with Apple," and this of course can be roughly translated as follows: Canada will have to wait. Sadly we have no clue when the iPhone may pop up on Rogers Wireless, but we're hoping that it arrives in time for the holiday season -- and yeah, we mean this year, Ted.

[Via TUAW]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

Rogers' HSDPA rollout unofficially plods on

Filed under: Rogers Wireless, HSDPA, Misc
While nothing official is on the wires, reports from various sources are popping up with jubilant cries of "HSDPA is here!" If you believe everything you hear (and by that token, what we are hearing) it seems users in Ottawa and London Ontario, Montreal Quebec, plus Edmonton and Calgary Alberta are all seeing that fabulous HSDPA icon on their handsets. Nothing official out of Rogers Corporate yet, but the word is that bigger centers should be up and running by Q1 2008 with general rollout by end of the year. All that has finally been settled and today marks the day when this fine bit of tech can finally be picked up in Canada. No major changes seem to be in place -- no, no Windows Mobile 6, at least not yet -- for this new handset and pricing is set at a steep $399.99 (that price is of course in Canadian dollars, which works out to $370 or so) on a 3 year term. Way to go Ted and Co, but we have to ask why this little fella took so long to get out the door. Leave it to Rogers to sneak out another color in the BlackBerry Pearl stable without having an official announcement anywhere in sight. Since May 9, Rogers has been quietly selling the candy apple red <strike>8120</strike> (8100, just kidding) for $249.99 (about $230) on a (gulp!) three year contract. Now, the only question is why would RIM and Rogers release the Pearl in such a lovely shade without a ton of fanfare? Maybe they were still backlogged from other events.

[Via Howard Forums]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Michael Caputo

BlackBerry 8300 Curve to hit Rogers in June?

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Rogers Wireless, GSM, GPRS, EDGE

Rumor has it that the BlackBerry Curve is gonna land at Rogers come early June and while the info we have is pretty sketchy, a refresh of their current stable does make good clean sense. We've hammered out the details on RIM's new offering again and again, so we won't give that a rehash, but suffice it to say, the lighter, prettier and QWERTY-capable Curve will make many a business user grin. Bring it on we say, bring it on, and of course as per usual, if you have more info for us to round out the news on this, drop us a line.

[Via mobileincanada.com]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

Moto's Red KRZR released by Rogers Wireless

Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, Rogers Wireless, GSM, GPRS
Motorola's KRZR K1 has landed at Canada's Rogers Wireless dressed all in red.
