The Duo 2 -- model number C820, naturally -- is said to feature a rounded black case that recalls the look of Motorola's old MPx200 and clocks in with dimensions very close to those of the HTC Vox. We're also told that the dual slide feel is "excellent" with well-illuminated buttons on both the numeric and QWERTY pads; the QWERTY side is apparently the easier to use of the two, with the numeric side being just a bit difficult to navigate by feel alone. Up front, the 2.4-inch screen is QVGA (who'd have thought?). Along the four edges you'll find a Pantech proprietary charge / sync connector and a microSD slot protected by a hard plastic cover.

It doesn't sound a heck of a lot different than the phone it replaces so far, but here's where it gets a little interesting: the C820 moves up from a 1.3 to a 2 megapixel camera and packs Windows Mobile 6.1, which apparently is already pretty well customized for the carrier thanks to the inclusion of apps like MobiTV and AT&T Music. Follow the break for software, memory, and processor details; since we might be waiting a while for a release, you may as well get all the info you can in the meanwhile, eh?
Continue reading Pantech Duo 2 C820 in the works for AT&T

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Pantech C610 shows up in FCC -- bound for AT&T, we'd wager

History tells us that Pantech likes to slap a "C" prefix on its models destined for AT&T (harking back to the Cingular days, no doubt), and so naturally our eyes widened just a bit when we saw just such a device fly through the FCC this week. This particular device is dubbed the C610, which we guesstimate puts it at about 200 less than the C810; enough of a deduction to take it out of the smartphone realm? Hard to say. We can tell from the documentation here that it's a 3G device, and a couple shots of the phone in the SAR reports taken from far, far away (blown up here for your viewing enjoyment) show a clamshell that's probably targeting a fashion-conscious crowd since it's done up in red. We wish we could say "we'll know soon enough," but since we're still waiting for the SMT5700 that hit the FCC over a year ago, we'll keep our mouths shut.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

SKY's Duke is only slightly more attractive than The Duke

"Luxurious yet simple design" is the name of the game for SKY's latest bit of mobile splendor, curiously named "Duke" of all things. For many of us, "Duke" conjures up images of rough-and-tumble sheriffs in the Wild West or gargantuan Xbox controllers, but one thing it doesn't necessarily bring to mind is "luxurious yet simple." No bother, we suppose it's the hardware that matters, so let's get to it: 2.4 inch QVGA display, 1.3 megapixel camera, document viewer, media player, Bluetooth, and built-in subway maps (Korean subways, that is) all grace the rather plainly styled slider. Look for it on your favorite Seoul retailer's shelf for something in the range of 400,000 won (about $404).

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

The Pantech... This dual-band CDMA handset with EV-DO just popped up on our FCC radar this morning with the model designation "ELVIS," and while we have no idea what it is, where it's going, or when, we have to admit -- we can kinda see the resemblance between this and The King in his later years. If you catch our drift.

Update: Turns out it's the UTStarcom TXT8010, which has a QWERTY keyboard; no wonder it's so wide. In light of the fact that the original Ocean's model number was OZ, it seems pretty obvious that an "OZ2" passing through the FCC by way of Pantech would be -- you guessed it -- the Ocean 2. It helps that the label diagram's depiction of the phone is clearly Ocean-esque in nature, too. So let's use this opportunity as a springboard for discussion: what does everyone hope to get out of the dual-sliding Helio Ocean's successor?

<a href=http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=205884&fcc_id='PP4OZ2'>Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

A look at AT&T's pipeline, early March 2008 edition

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Pantech, Sony Ericsson, ATT, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

We've already mentioned that the LG Vu is looking solid for a late March release after being held up (or so they say, anyway) to work through a few MediaFLO issues; we've now received independent confirmation that it's true -- assuming no more issues arise, of course -- but that's not all. No, far from it, in fact. The Sony Ericsson Z750 is apparently inbound for a release within two weeks, and along with the rugged Motorola W760 "Hurricane" (pictured), that should close out AT&T's March docket.

Moving on to April and beyond, the Pantech "Breeze" is expected some time next month, but don't get too excited -- it's an entry level flip that should move out the door free on contract. The Motorola Z9 slider should lackadaisically stroll into stores in late April, and finally, we've heard that the Nokia N95 has been approved by the carrier's powers that be (!!!) and should be available in the second quarter; no word on whether it's the standard N95 or the N95 8GB, though. How about an N96 with MediaFLO while you're at it, guys?

[Thanks, Kal]

Update: We've just heard from another tipster that the N95 in question is the original for the North American market, the N95-3. It apparently just started going through the arduous approval process last week, a testing marathon that takes roughly 400 hours -- four to six months -- to complete. By then, we'll all have 4G radios embedded directly within our brains and be living in terraformed colonies on Mars, but it was a nice thought on AT&T's part nonetheless.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

A trip down Helio's memory lane

Filed under: Handsets, Others, Pantech, Helio, EV-DO, MVNOs, CDMA

Back before there was Helio, there was Earthlink, South Korea's SKT, and a dream. Heliocity managed to score some shots of just what that dream looked like in the early days, a similar -- yet decidedly different -- vision than what the MVNO ended up bringing to market. Not only are the prerelease versions of Helio's first two models to market (the Kickflip and Hero) "SK Earthlink" branded, but check out that super trippy Kickflip proto, complete with aerial antenna and secondary LCD for self-portraits. The Ocean obviously came along further down the road, and while we like the all-black finish Helio decided on, we think the two-tone action here would've made for an interesting second choice. Read on for all the visuals.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

AT&T to get Pantech Duo in red?

Filed under: Handsets, Pantech, ATT, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA
Pantech's double-sliding Duo seems set to roll out with AT&T in a refreshed red housing color. Yes, friends, the time has come once again for Japan's carriers to upheave their still-fresh lineups and replace them with even fresher ones. Here we take a look at KDDI au's just-announced Spring '08 collection, including a model with an e-ink display and another with a 3 inch OLED. Wowza! Note that not all of these handsets are new -- some are carryovers from the carrier's Winter '07 collection, so we won't be covering those here. In its domestic Korean market, the IM-S300 slider from Pantech's SKY division is apparently being touted as the "Romantic Wave," and we guess we're hard pressed to disagree. The wavy buttons front and center look really cool -- usability aside, of course -- though the 1.3 megapixel cam leads us to believe that physical design is where the high-endedness ends on this one. If you happen to be around Seoul, grab it for something in the range of 400,000 won (about $430) in black or white (with pink accents, no less).

[Via Just Another Mobile Phone Blog]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

RIM's shipping BlackBerry phones to Russia in 2008

We're going to refrain from the "In Soviet Russia..." jokes and get straight to the point: RIM is bringing its BlackBerry phones to Russia in Q1 2008. Apparently the hang up was with Russian security agencies, but now that the two main carriers, MTS and Vimpelcom, have gotten approval from the FSB, the phones are finally able to enter Russia in acronymical harmony. MTS has had BlackBerry phones in Ukraine since October, any many business customers use foreign phones via roaming, but this is the first time in a while the phones are going legit in actual Russia. The carriers have been granted permission for one year of sales, but as we all know, once a few government officials go CrackBerry, they're never going back.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Helio outs File Viewer for Ocean, reads most of the important stuff

Helio's Ocean certainly has the hardware credentials to see some duty as a business device, but with Helio's consumer focus, the software necessary to turn the phone into a productivity powerhouse hasn't really materialized. That changes a bit today though with the introduction of File Viewer, a free application that allows Ocean users to read a variety of popular file formats, among them Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents, PDF, plain text, HTML, and several image types in both landscape and portrait modes. Helio's commemorating the event by also upgrading its Mail for Exchange platform to version 1.2, offering a handful of improvements and providing direct integration to the File Viewer. Both are available today; follow the break for the full press release.
Continue reading Helio outs File Viewer for Ocean, reads most of the important stuff

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Two-faced Pantech Duo officially launches on AT&T

Filed under: Handsets, Pantech, ATT, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

No surprises here, but the Pantech Duo (split-personality and all) has officially arrived in late October, just as we were led to believe. Ready to rock texters' worlds on AT&T, the Duo does indeed boast Windows Mobile 6, a QWERTY keypad and a numeric 'board for your convenience, UMTS / HSDPA compatibility and a 320 x 240 resolution display. The unit measures in at 4.02- x 1.97- x .83-inches, and if you dig what you're seeing, it can be yours today for $199.99 if you're cool with signing a two-year agreement.

[Via Reuters / Yahoo]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Pantech Duo C810 pops for AT&T retail

Filed under: Handsets, Pantech, ATT, Windows Mobile, GSM, HSDPA
We're still waiting for it to grace AT&T's pages, but it looks like the WinMo 6 Standard Pantech Duo C810 is now available in most AT&T retail stores for $249 with two-year contract. Phonescoop has the full spec rundown and video hands-on of AT&T's new quad-band GSM / HSDPA dual-sliding QWERTY. So the Duo's finally starting to land in stores (as is the LG CU515, we're hearing), and Boy Genius Report has wasted precisely zero time to check it out. It sounds like everything's just fine and dandy from the initial impression -- it turns out you can't slide out both the numeric and QWERTY keyboards at the same time like you can with the dummy units, but we're not too sure why you'd want to do that anyway. Oh, and if the Duo isn't to your liking, hang tight; we're hearing that the Q9 Global has starting shipping to stores (the Samsung A737, too), so they should be showing up any day now.

[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Pantech intros bone-conducting A1407PT handset

While bone conduction has been fairly quick to catch on in headsets, the slightly unnerving technology has so far been conspicuously absent from the cellphones themselves, save for the odd rumor. Pantech looks set to change that, however, with its newly-announced bone-rattling A1407PT handset now headed straight for KDDI. Apart from that one unique feature, however, the phone looks to be a pretty basic clamshell, including a 2.4-inch QVGA display on the inside and a 96 x 64 display on the flip, along with a 1.3 megapixel camera, 20MB of internal memory, and the ever-present microSD slot for expansion. No word on what it'll cost, but those in Japan will be able to get their hands on one sometime in November.

[Via Just Another Mobile Phone Blog]

On track for a late October launch? Sure looks like it. We've caught wind that retail locations are starting to stock up on Pantech Duo dummies, suggesting that they'll be prepping for launch any day now. Between this, the Q9 Global, the Blackjack II, the Tilt, and the 5700, it looks like anyone complaining about a lack of Windows Mobile devices on AT&T by the end of the year... well, needs to find a real issue.

[Thanks, Kal-El]

Gallery: Pantech Duo dummies showing up in AT&T stores

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Updated AT&T availability dates!

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Palm, Pantech, RIM, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, UTStarcom, ATT, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS, HSUPA
Like pretty much everything else in life, carriers' launch dates tend to slip, sometimes to the extreme (oh, come on, you can't tell us you've never procrastinated to the point where you couldn't make a due date!). To that end, we've gotten an updated look at AT&T's expected drop dates, and it seems like the wait has gotten a little longer for a few of the more anticipated handsets in the pipe. Some devices like the red version of the Nokia 6555 have slipped a couple weeks, while others -- the lowly Samsung A127 comes to mind -- have actually moved up. The Pantech Duo has also been pushed out from October 9 to the 30th, possibly to give the just-launched Tilt a little breathing room in the spotlight. Nokia adds another color for the 6555 on October 11, red, which we think will suite it quite nicely. Speaking of new colors, Sony Ericsson brings a black version of the W580i on October 9. The Pantech Duo -- a device we suspect many folks are getting fired up over -- should hit on the same day. From Motorola, the Q9 Global becomes orderable just a few days from now, September 25, alongside the Tilt from HTC. UTStarcom outs the AMOI-sourced 5700 on October 9, giving folks a low cost (albeit non-3G) Windows Mobile option. RIM gets busy with the Curve 8310 on October 4, effectively sunsetting the original 8300 by adding GPS into the mix. On the data modem side, Sierra and Option will both be contributing HSUPA devices in October. Let's hear it for speedy uploads! Follow the break for the full roadmap.

[Thanks, Superman]
Continue reading Updated look at AT&T's upcoming launches

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Tilt, Duo, Inferno, and Q9h to blow out AT&T's October?

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Motorola, Nokia, Pantech, ATT, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, HSDPA, UMTS
These are all devices we know folks have been waiting for, so we're delighted to finally hear some whipsers that launch windows are being put in place. First up, the AT&T Tilt -- alias 8925, alias Kaiser -- is rumored to be priced at $299 on a two-year or $374 on a one-year agreement. The Pantech Duo, which Amazon jumped the gun on over the weekend, will be launching for $199 on a two-year, which makes the Amazon pricing a bargain already. The Nokia 6555 "Inferno" gets priced at $49.99 on contract -- a steal for a sharp lookin' 3G flip, we figure. Last but not least, the Motorola Q9 global finally materializes for a cool $299, putting it head to head with the Tilt. All four of these are supposedly scheduled for shipment to stores on October 1, making for a very interesting month. Everyone know which of the four they're choosing yet?

[Thanks, Amy K.]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Amazon gets impatient, offers Pantech C810 for AT&T

Filed under: Handsets, Pantech, ATT, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS

You know, if it weren't for retailers and the FCC, manufacturers' and carriers' employees would lead relatively stress- and hypertension-free lives -- but in this heavily embargoed, NDA'd, confidentiality agreemented world in which we live, bean spillage is an inevitable occurrence. We're not saying that's what's going on here, but we find it odd that Amazon would start offering Pantech's C810 dual slider Windows Mobile smartphone for AT&T with nary a peep from the carrier itself (not that we're complaining in the least). Even better, they're offering it for a cool $180 which seems really reasonable for a Windows Mobile 6 Standard device with UMTS in such a creative and useful form factor. Give us a holler in comments if anyone grabs it!

[Via Smartphone Thoughts]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Pantech C810, AT&T's homage to the Helio Ocean

Filed under: Handsets, Pantech, ATT, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS

What would you get if you crossed a Helio Ocean, Windows Mobile 6 Standard, and UMTS? This here Pantech C810, naturally. Boy Genius Report has pictures of the AT&T-branded device being called "Mustang" and "Duo" internally, though it's not known whether either of those names will make it to production; features are said to include a 3G radio of some sort (either UMTS or UMTS / HSDPA), microSD expansion, that wild dual-slide action with a numeric keypad in one direction and a full QWERTY deal in the other, and a 65,000-color display -- but other than that, we're in the dark. It's rumored to be hitting as soon as next month for $250 on contract, and if this all checks out, we suspect AT&T may have a difficult time keeping 'em stocked.

Update: We've heard from several folks that this device may actually be the C810, which would be more in line with Pantech's naming convention for AT&T devices. We'll keep you updated.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Pantech SKY IM-U210 / U210K has long name, global WCDMA roaming

Pantech's SKY line of mobile handsets gets a boost with this winsome 7.2Mbps HSDPA-capable phone. While looking a wee bit bulky in the middle, we'll forgive as it comes packing T-DMB, a 2 megapixel camera, "Global WCDMA roaming" -- we've no idea what geography that really covers -- a chromium plated "u-shaped key," plus a pile of software goodies to boot. It's a warm, fuzzy feeling, ain't it? Anyway, let's have a look: Palm is said to come swinging in with two, the 500 on the low end with a $99 price point on October 14 and an 800w ("w" stands for Windows Mobile 6 here, friends) up top -- though the latter doesn't grace shelves until Q1 of '08. Novatel gets down with an updated version of the U720 dubbed U727 (what else?) come September 30. Sanyo meanwhile should add the S1 candybar to replace the SCP-4930 on October 14, but November 4 is allegedly when things really start to heat up. That day should bring the LG LX260, RIM BlackBerry Pearl 2, HTC Vogue, and the UTStarcom PX-00, a low-cost Rev A data card to replace the PX-500. The Motorola Q9c -- possibly with GSM international roaming -- should drop by a little later in November, while a dual-mode CDMA / GSM rendition of the Samsung BlackJack replaces the IP-830w early next year. Again, this is all unconfirmed, but it seems plausible enough. We'll throw up any corroborating info as we get it.

[Via Slashphone]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Pantech C150 and LG Trax now on AT&T

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Pantech, ATT, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

As expected, AT&T has officially added a couple to its stable -- one on the midrange and one at the very bottom. The LG Trax -- once known as the CU575 -- has gotten plenty of press recently as the anticipated replacement for the CU500, offering stereo Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, HSDPA, and a cool external touch strip for music control. The Pantech C150, meanwhile, looks like a great candybar for the price (free, that is) considering that it still manages to rock a VGA cam and Bluetooth support, and we're digging the pure white. Grab both now for $130 and $0 on contract, respectively.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Read - Pantech C150
Read - LG Trax

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Enthusiasts bring 3rd party apps to the Helio Ocean, too

Filed under: Software, Pantech, Helio, MVNOs

The iPhone isn't the only handset whose software innards are getting lovingly torn apart in the name of science this week. It turns out some intrepid users of the Helio Ocean (a device occasionally compared to the iPhone, coincidentally) have been slaving away on a method for adding extra applications outside of the carrier's walled garden. Their first success is a doozy, too: Opera Mini 3, one of the most prized jewels in the world of mobile software. The developers aren't claiming it's bug-free -- landscape mode and the QWERTY keyboard don't work, for example -- but it's a huge step in the right direction and they're continuing to work out the kinks. More custom apps are said to be on the way, and don't worry, Drift and Heat users -- support's said to be on the way for you guys, too.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Motorolas, BlackBerrys, and Pantechs in the coming weeks for AT&T?

Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, Pantech, RIM, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS
If it seems like there's been a lull in AT&T's 3G handset launch cadence, that may be about to change. The EDGE-only SMT5700 may finally rear its head on the 24th (wow, a triple whammy?) or the 28th of the month, while the BlackBerry 8820 should hit on the 13th or 14th. There's not much going on here in the way of nifty tech (unless you count the 1.3 megapixel camera or the fact that there are several of them seemingly orbiting the woman in the picture), so Pantech's SKY-branded IM-U200 flip for SK Telecom tries to make up for that little indiscretion with visual appeal. It's cool, we guess, but we can't imagine the thing feels too great stuffed in a pocket; Pantech calls it the "Shooting Star," but we think "Wedge" is a little more fitting. Look for it to hit for about 500,000 won -- $543, give or take.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Ocean gets Exchange ActiveSync -- for a price

Filed under: Messaging, Software, Pantech, Helio

Exchange using Helio members, your time is now: the Ocean's finally getting that Exchange ActiveSync support (for Contacts, Calendar, and email with Exchange Server 2003 SP2+) promised users, as well as bumped new version of Helio File Viewer (supporting .doc, .ppt, .xls and .pdf). But, as always, there is a catch. Although the first 60 days of use during the beta period will be free, the final version of Helio EAS + File Viewer will set you back an addition $10 per month for all-in users. If that still sounds workable with your expense account, jump on that Ocean right now and download the app that gets the corporate collaboration wheels moving. One more shot after the break.
Continue reading Ocean gets Exchange ActiveSync -- for a price

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Helio pits Apple's iPhone against Ocean

Filed under: Handsets, Pantech, ATT, Helio, 1xRTT, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO, Apple

Let's face it, the comparisons between (insert phone here) and Apple's handset began long ago, and now that the thing is actually in customers' hands, the potshots are likely to start flying at mach speed. Enter Helio, who has already felt it necessary to create a comparison chart essentially showing off the areas in which the Ocean is stronger (or at least more attractive) than the iPhone. Quite frankly, the chart does make a few good points, most notably around the iPhone's lack of GPS, strangely omitted MMS ability, and the obligatory removable battery; of course, we personally aren't offended nor joyous about "MySpace integration," but we suppose it could sway some <strike>folks</strike> tweens one way or another. We know you're anxious to see just what Helio has to say about the strong competition, and while the chart doesn't seem quite as hostile as the apparently bitter Helio salesman we ran into earlier today, be sure to give it a read after the break.
Continue reading Helio pits Apple's iPhone against Ocean

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Pantech IM-S230 swipes "world's thinnest slider" crown

In the dog-eat-dog world of cellphone manufacturing, a millimeter of thickness can make all the difference -- the difference between producing some generic, brand X handset that no one gives two flips about, and crafting "the world's thinnest slider" to a deluge of fanfare. The "world's thinnest" titles tend to get passed around pretty frequently -- particularly among the Korean manufacturers as they work overtime to rapidly one-up each other -- though we're not too sure how much longer this can carry on. Pantech's new IM-S230 clocks in at an astonishing 9.9 millimeters thick, a far cry from the world's thinnest phone, but extraordinarily impressive when you learn that the S230 is a slider (sorry, Samsung!). Features include a 1.3 megapixel camera, media player, document viewer, and DMB TV reception on a 2.2 inch display. Look for it for around $535 in white or black when it launches.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Disney Mobile gets new Pantech handset

Not content to let the failure of ESPN Mobile and the recent bankruptcy of Amp'd Mobile affect it, fellow MVNO Disney Mobile has launched a new Pantech handset, model DM-P205. Disney Mobile has not been in the new lately (really, since launch in 2006), so the kid-friendly virtual carrier figured it had better release something to generate some news. Seriously, this entry-level Pantech unit with a 2004-era VGA digicam and Bluetooth should work for the target market Disney Mobile wants to recruit, but we're just wondering if the MVNO will be around post-2007.

[Via Crave]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Brian White

Engadget Mobile relaunch giveaways - Helio Ocean

Alright everybody, let's get this thing started. What would you say to a spankin' new Helio Ocean? You know it well: the very first dual slider with a 12 key and QWERTY keyboard, not to mention 3G, GPS, all kinds of messaging support, PlaysForSure, A2DP, and plenty more. Want to take one home? It's easy, just leave us a comment below, and do be sure to follow the following set of rules, won't you?

A few rules (yeah, there are always rules):

You may only enter this specific contest once. If you enter this contest more than once you'll be automatically disqualified and barred from all future giveaways. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.) In other words, be careful when commenting and don't submit more than once, ok?

You may enter our other EngMob relaunch contests, but you can't win more than once; if you happen to win more than once (which is pretty unlikely, but still) we'll ask you to choose just one of your prizes.

The prize is open to US entrants only. Hey, it's a US phone, you couldn't do anything with it anyway.

Contest is open until 11:59pm EST on Tuesday, May 29th.

We'll be shipping all the phones to winners once all the relaunch giveaway contests are over. (Yeah, we know it bites to have to wait, but dems the breaks!)

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Pantech C3b launched on AT&T

Filed under: Handsets, Pantech, ATT, GSM, GPRS

Like the C300 and C3 before it, Pantech's C3b stays true to the ultra-small flip form factor that brought it notoriety. Passers-by will barely be able to tell the difference, really; the difference lies all in the guts, where the C3b adds sorely-missed Bluetooth into the mix (hence the "b") and MMS support. Meanwhile, the VGA cam with flash carries over from the C3. Grab it now on AT&T for $20 after contract and discounts.

[Via MobileBurn]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Helio Ocean launches today

Filed under: Handsets, Pantech, Helio, 1xRTT, EV-DO, MVNOs, CDMA

Get ready to spend the weekend mindlessly sliding the Ocean's dual keypads open and closed until you drive friends and family to the brink of insanity (trust us, it's pretty addictive). Yep, that would be this weekend we're talking about -- Helio's new flagship device finally makes its debut on its website and store shelves today for $295, followed by a second wave of availability in a variety of third-party retailers toward the end of this month. Of course, unless you're within driving distance of one of Helio's handful of flagship locations, actually finding one today might be challenging; might we recommend our hands-on to hold you over while you patiently wait for the parcel to make its way to your doorstep?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Helio Ocean unboxing and hands-on

Filed under: Handsets, Features, Pantech, Helio, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA

The last time we got to hang with the Helio Ocean it was still technically a prototype -- albeit a unit obviously near completion. Today we finally snagged the real deal, and let us just say this Ocean runs deep. (Sorry, had to.) The Helio UI feels a lot snappier, screen orientation switching is nearly instantaneous, and our niggles thus far are few (we really wish it wouldn't kick us out of all apps when we're in "default" position). We'll have the full report on this in the near future, but until this thing officially launches (soon, soon) then feast your eyes on our retail unboxing and hands-on.

Replacing the good, old fashioned numeric keypad with a touch sensitive display seems to be all the rage these days -- not to mention a certain phone from Apple that intends to bury buttons for good. We're still a little skeptical that the concept is easy to use, but we've gotta admit, this here IM-R200 from Pantech's upmarket SKY brand is way cool looking. Up top you have a 2 inch QVGA LCD accompanied by a 1.6 inch OLED touchscreen on the bottom that changes functionality and appearance depending on the handset's current mode. There's a 2 megapixel cam in back (with face recognition for improved focus, no less) and a VGA counterpart in front. There's no sign of this one ever finding its way out of Korea, but if you happen to be there, look for it on SK Telecom and KTF this month.
