Orange spokesperson Therese Wenger told the SDA news agency that it has secured rights to release the iPhone (3G version, presumably) in Switzerland and more than 10 other countries -- take that Swisscom! Other countries include Austria, Belgium, Poland, Portugal, and Romania. And France of course where it's already on sale. See, that was quick and leaves room for a dozen or so other iPhone related announcements today.

Update: Official Orange press release now out.

[Via 20minuten, thanks Pascal M. and Pae]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

Orange France gets exclusive on Levi's 3G slider

Filed under: Handsets, Orange, GSM, EDGE, UMTS

Not just jeans friends, ModeLabs Group's Levi's handset is also all about the 3G experience, at least for Orange France users. This clunky slider features triple-band GSM, 2100MHz UMTS, 2 megapixel cam, Bluetooth, FM radio, and a microSD slot to extend the storage for your digital media. Orange is even offering to fill your memory card slot with a 1GB card and give you somewhere to put it with a Jean pocket-shaped case if you get there soon enough. We saw Levi's first branded set some time ago and it's encouraging to see them stepping up with faster data services -- well at least UMTS. Who knows, we may one day see some on this side of the world.

[Via MobileBurn]

That might be pushing the limits of decency, even among the most loudly-accessorized mobile maniacs. Alas, Orange is trumpeting the arrival of its "exclusive" purple Viewty, featuring the same 5 megapixel camera, xenon flash, HSDPA, and full touchscreen that made the original a winner. Starting this year, the two carriers will begin tag-teaming some cell sites across the country, leading to a roughly 15 percent reduction in the total number of sites needed (or so they say) in the first two years of the plan. They're quick to point out that they'll both continue to maintain totally separate networks and be solely responsible for the quality of service provided, it's really just a simple matter of slapping both companies' repeaters up on the masts. Seems like a win / win, we figure.

[Via MobileBurn]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Orange, T-Mobile UK announce TDtv trials, mobile TV standards now number one bajillion

Filed under: Multimedia, Orange, T-Mobile, UMTS
Still struggling to figure out a way to turn a profit on the whole concept, carriers and infrastructure suppliers apparently have no bones about continuing to go full speed ahead on mobile TV R&D, trials, and deployments. NextWave Wireless' TDtv standard has one key advantage over competitors like DVB-H, DMB, and FLO, though: because it utilizes unpaired UMTS spectrum, it makes use of frequencies and technologies that carriers already possess. On the flipside, it has taken considerably longer for TDtv to come into its own, while DVB-H has secured a deathgrip on Europe and FLO has done the same in North America, so it's unclear at this point just how much impact it'll ultimately have. Anyway, Orange and T-Mobile apparently have shown enough interest to find out for themselves, with both carriers committing to TDtv trials in the UK that'll have West London customers receiving up to 24 telly channels and 10 digital radio stations when the system launches in the second half of the year.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Hands-on with HTC's newest touchscreen toy, say hello to the 3470

Filed under: Handsets, Features, HTC, Orange, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE

It case you missed it, the handset features GPS -- while not crystal clear, the press material suggests HTC includes TomTom 6 -- quad-band GPRS / EDGE, 256 MB ROM, 128 MB RAM, Bluetooth, and a 1 GB microSD card. Sorry speed freaks, no WiFi or 3G connectivity here, but all the above is piled into a pretty tight container, in fact, it is one of HTC's smallest sets. Nokia has actually come forward with two mobile ad headliners: first, the Nokia Media Network is now official, bringing together ads on Nokia's own sites as well as 70-plus publishers' and carriers' properties under a single umbrella, all made possible by the company's 2007 acquisition of Enpocket; second, Nokia Siemens Networks has announced a turnkey solution for folks wishing to bite the targeted mobile ad bullet, spanning from consulting to infrastructure and ad delivery. Meanwhile, the big five carriers in the UK -- Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, O2, and 3 -- have announced that they're working with the GSM Association to develop a common standard for measuring mobile ad reach, a marked change in some of the carriers' typical policies of keeping customer metrics well out of reach of potential advertisers and therefore limiting interest. One of those carriers, O2, has separately revealed that it has launched its own mobile advertising service (take that, Nokia Media Network) following a 2007 trial that will allow advertisers to get really, really down and dirty with their target demos -- age, location, browsing behavior, and so on -- through a system that generated a 6 percent click-through rate in testing. As long as the average phone display stays QVGA or lower, we're pretty sure we're not down with teeny, tiny banner ads all up in our business, but it's the wave of the future, it seems.

[Via mocoNews]

Read - Nokia Media Network
Read - Nokia Siemens Networks
Read - UK mobile companies to develop advertising standards
Read - O2 sets sights on mobile advertising market

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

LiMo Foundation makes a splash; adds members, shows hardware

Filed under: Software, LG, Panasonic, NEC, Samsung, Orange, Linux, NTT DoCoMo

Not to be outdone by a powerful Android presence, the boys and girls at the LiMo Foundation have brought it strong with a series of announcements at Mobile World Congress. Yeah, the SDK is en route, but that's just the beginning; first up, and perhaps most notably in its effort to fight the Android juggernaut, LiMo has managed to sign up a slew of new partners. Most notable on the refreshed roster include ACCESS (which just hooked up with MontaVista, itself a LiMo member), Samsung, and carriers Orange and SoftBank.

The foundation is backing up its talk with some walk, too, in the form of several production-ready handsets: the U9, Z6w, Z6, E8, RAZR 2 V8, and RAZR 2 V8 Luxury Edition from Motorola (all devices that have previously been launched using MOTOMAGX, Moto's own special flavor of mobile Linux), the Samsung i800 which is destined for Orange's airwaves, and the N905i, N905iu, N705, N705iu, P905i, P905iTV, P705, and P705iu -- a mouthful of models from members NEC and Panasonic for Japan's NTT DoCoMo. Also rocking out at MWC are prototypes from LG and Aplix along with the Purple Magic low-cost flip from Purple Labs. Is it all enough momentum to give some balance to the mobile Linux landscape and serve as the yin to Google's yang? Seems like a strong possibility, but we'll have to hold our horses until developers are playing with the final tools and handsets are in wide circulation.

Read - LiMo Foundation unveils first LiMo handsets
Read - New LiMo Foundation members introduced

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

First month yields 70,000 iPhone sales for a happy Orange

We're still talking about a submicronic fraction of US sales, but Orange is happily touting that it hawked over 70,000 iPhones in their first month since launch, a figure that lies squarely in the middle of the 50,000 to 100,000 it had hoped to sell in that period. Perhaps more interestingly, 48 percent of those sales went to Orange customers, implying that the other 52 percent sold were unlocked -- the only carrier-direct unlocked iPhone model currently being sold anywhere. Question is, what's going to happen to all these numbers once the 3G action goes down?

[Via Mac Rumors]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Orange says unlocked iPhones are, in fact, unlocked

Some hubbub across the 'nets the past few days suggested that the unlocked iPhones being offered by Orange in France were -- of all things -- country locked, a rather unusual (but still perfectly valid and real) form of SIM lock that would require that the SIM of a French carrier be installed in the phone. Now, by our calculation, this would've been about the crappiest thing Apple and Orange could've done and still be within the boundaries of French law requiring that phones be offered unlocked. We certainly wouldn't put it past the terrible twosome, but fortunately, it looks like the fears were a little overblown; iLounge is claiming that they've confirmed with Orange that the unlocked units are not country locked. We imagine it's not a big deal for the domestic market there either way, but for the good folks in surrounding countries, it makes the sitch a little easier.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

UK carriers ganging up on 3?

Filed under: O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Hutchison 3
The underdog in Britain's mobile market, 3, is accusing its larger rivals of trying to shut it out of the market to the tune of £250 million (about $500 million), taking its sob story all the way to the UK's court system. The claim revolves around a series of meetings in 2005 of the Operator Steering Group -- a group to which Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange, O2, and 3 all belonged -- in which everyone but 3 voted to keep the nation's number transfer delay at five days, despite the fact that the process takes mere hours in other European countries. 3 claims that the larger carriers are using this excruciatingly long window to convince folks porting their numbers to 3 to stay by throwing fantastic discount packages their way. On the surface it all sounds like a plea for government help when the little guy finds itself unable to compete, but who knows, maybe there's some actual collusion going on here.

[Via textually.org]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Orange: 30,000 iPhones sold in France and counting

Orange is claiming that it has managed to push 30,000 iPhones on an unsuspecting (or really, very suspecting in this case) French populace so far, a figure that seems surprisingly believable and un-blown out of proportion. Granted, Apple sold gobs more iPhones on US soil during its inaugural weekend on shelves, but let's keep things in perspective here -- it's a smaller population, a smaller launch, and it's a society that's far more used to technologically advanced handsets. It still seems a bit too early to call the iPhone a commercial success or failure in the local market, but if O2's wild claims of success are any indication, we're guessing Orange'll end up going the same route. Low-end UMA handset? Yeah, we know a thing or two about those 'round here. For whatever reason (fancy-shmancy market research, we suppose) carrier and manufacturers seem to be concentrating their UMA development on cheaper phones, and Samsung's SGH-P180 for Orange France's Ubik service is no different. Features include a 160 x 128 display, EDGE data, a totally bangin' VGA camera, and that's about it -- so unless you're in France, you dig WiFi / GSM handoffs, and you don't mind scraping the bottom of the proverbial barrel, you can probably stop worry about this model as soon as you're done with this post.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Orange to sell contract-free iPhone for 649 euro plus 100 euro unlocking fee

France Telecom just announced that the iPhone will go on sale tonight at 6:30pm (18.30) at a dozen of its Orange stores across France. It will charge between €49 ($72) and €119 ($175) per month in addition to the €399 cost of the iPhone itself. Orange customers can unlock their iPhone for another €100 on the spot or free after 6 months -- though they're still locked into an Orange contract of 1 or 2 years. The iPhone will also be sold <strike>unlocked</strike> contract free for €649 ($957) or €549 ($809) with an Orange plan without a time commitment. Got it? Yeah, we're a bit confused too, but then again, it's definitely cheaper than the unlocked German iPhone.

Update: Ah, clarity: AFP reports that an unlocked iPhone will cost €749 -- €649 for phone and €100 for unlocking. Or, in US dollars, roughly somewhere between $740 and $1,500, but apparently closer to the former. A bit pricey to be sure, but it would certainly be cheaper than the €999 unlocked iPhone that T-Mobile is selling in Germany. As previously announced, a locked iPhone on Orange (complete with a two-year contract) will set you back €399.
Orange UK seems set to begin shipping this lovingly branded handset and CoolSmartPhone was kind enough to introduce us all by way of some fresh unboxing pics. As we'd already heard, the Orange version of the outrageously popular Touch device will ship with a 16-key keypad, and not the <strike>painful</strike> SureType 20 key jobby we've also seen. We're pretty confident that this set combined with a dash of holiday enthusiasm will most definitely help HTC reach its sales goals for the year.

[Via CoolSmartPhone]

Early adopters of Sony Ericsson's W910i on the Orange network may have noticed that their phones suffer a tiny little flaw -- shutting down 10 seconds into a phone call. The bug only wormed its way into a small number of W910s sold by Orange, but the two companies aren't taking any chances -- they've recalled every W910i sold thus far for inspection and repair / replacement. Models in stores now are apparently fine, but we're hearing scattered reports of replacements having the same problem as well. No word on what's causing the problem, but we can't seem to get through to SE to get more details -- the call keeps ending, for some reason.

[Via TrustedReviews]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

Samsung's newest designer set, the Z240 Vittorio & Lucchino edition

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Orange, GSM, UMTS

In what appears to be homage to old school iDEN cellphones everywhere, Samsung looks to be preparing its latest phone for Orange, a rugged little beast appropriately named "Solid." The important details are a little sparse at the moment, but we hear the device will sport a VGA camera and by the looks of the keypad, it will also have a speakerphone. If it's real -- and frankly, we have no good reason to suspect otherwise -- it should hit Orange come December.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Michael Caputo

LG's KU380 3G slider for Orange and TIM

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Orange, GSM, UMTS

We don't necessarily bother bringing up every last midrange phone that hits the European market, but this thing's kinda cute, isn't it? It's the KU380 from LG, a decidedly pale slider whose highest-end feature happens to be its UMTS radio. Otherwise you get a 220 x 176 display, 1.3 megapixel cam, microSD slot, Bluetooth 1.2, and that's about it. Look for it to land on Orange and TIM.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

"Unlimited" iPhone data plans on T-Mobile, O2 and Orange not so unlimited

Filed under: O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Apple

Europeans are pretty used to paying through the nose for usage charges, whether it be by-the-minute charges for local calls in the landline days of yore, or per-KB charges for wireless data. The up side is that there are usually some pretty sweet prices on phones, since wireless companies know they can make it up on the back end, but for heavy users things can get expensive fast. And unfortunately, the glorious promises of "unlimited" data usage tacked onto iPhone plans offered by T-Mobile, O2 and Orange in their respective iPhone-exclusive markets aren't quite the revolution we might've hoped for. T-Mobile just posted its rate plans for the November 9th iPhone launch, though it quickly pulled them from the site. Eagle-eyed observers grabbed a screenshot of the rates (pictured), but what's notable is the fine print: depending on which plan you select -- M, L or XL -- you're limited to 200MB, 1GB or 5GB of data, after which your data speeds are limited to 64Kbps, instead of EDGE's traditional 220Kbps max. O2, whose rates have been up since day one, has a slightly vaguer "fair usage policy" that gives O2 the right to slap you with extra charges or change your rate plan if you exceed 200MB of use, though they claim this rarely happens. Details on Orange's rate plans for the iPhone haven't emerged yet, but Orange France has historically some of the priciest unlimited data rates, and has a standing policy to just go ahead and slap per-KB charges once the limit is crossed. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

[Thanks, Patrick]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Orange to sell unlocked iPhones in France

Well, well... looks like Apple has been backed into a corner by French law and will be releasing an unlocked iPhone in France after all. After months of basically pulling each other's hair on the playground, Apple and Orange have finally admitted that they like-like each other and have signed a deal to get the iPhone out in France. No word on how those unlocking laws will affect the deal, but something tells us people in iPhone-less countries who want to get their multi-touch on might want to brush up on their French.

Update: Apple.com/fr/iPhone has been updated to show a launch date of November 29, as shown above.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

Orange UK to get 16-key HTC Touch Dual, not 20

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Orange, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

We've personally never had an easy time getting used to 20-key (think SureType) layouts, so this doesn't really break our hearts -- but on the flip, we understand that it's one small step away from QWERTY, which is bound to upset a few folks. MoDaCo is reporting that Orange's UK outpost will only be offering the 16-key full numeric variant of the HTC Touch Dual, apparently looking to position the device somewhere underneath the true email powerhouses in its lineup. We're not exactly up on our French, let alone our French telecommunications law, but we're hearing that Apple's supposed launch of the iPhone in that country is being held up by two different regulations that prevent the iPhone from being the locked-down revenue-generating machine Apple wants it to be. The first, a law passed in 1998, requires that carriers unlock any phone upon customer request -- for a fee during the first six months of a contract and for free after that. Notably, all three major French carriers -- including Orange, which was supposed to get the iPhone -- have lost lawsuits challenging this law. The second, which we're slightly less clear on, apparently requires carriers to sell both locked and unlocked phones. Tensions over the regulations have apparently strained the relationship between the companies to the point where Orange spokespeople are saying things like "the risk we're evaluating this week is that Apple crosses France off," but really, who expected Apples and Oranges to mix without someone getting a little bruised?

Read -- French unlocking law with unlocking provision at end of Article II
Read -- Les Echoes report on Apple / Orange tension

[Via The Unlock iPhone Blog]

Disclaimer: Although this post was written by an attorney, the attorney in question only met his university's foreign language graduation requirement by reciting an Eddie Izzard routine verbatim, so this post should not be considered legal advice or analysis of any kind.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

Orange, Apple at loggerheads on iPhone deal?

So is this why Orange kept fanfare over its iPhone annoucement to a bare minimum? The word on the street is that Apple and the French carrier are still battling over terms of the gargantuan deal -- no surprise if true, really, considering that Cupertino's looking for a massive revenue share from each carrier it's doing business with. Looking to add a breath of fresh air in the handset game, Orange has announced that it will launch a line of city-themed mobile phones in time for the Christmas holiday. The first mobile to launch is called the Berlin and is an entry level, rubberized slider sporting 3G. The device is designed for Orange's pay as you go service and is priced to be easy on the pocket book. Since the device will launch as a market exclusive, don't expect to find the device in any Orange markets other than the UK. Look for more geographically-inclined phones to hit the lineup in 2008, some of which will move toward the higher end. Does anyone else think it makes sense that Orange launches phones named after cities in which they don't have service?

[Via textually.org]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Michael Caputo

Orange nonchalantly confirms iPhone deal in France

Filed under: Handsets, Orange, Apple, OS X

We're still waiting for official word from Apple on this, but it would seem that France Telecom's Orange has sealed the iPhone deal. In the wishy-washiest of public announcements, chief executive Didier Lombard said that the iPhone would be distributed in France "before Christmas, probably in November." It will not be subsidized but no price was given. Having Steve issues are we? Guess you really can't compare apples and oranges.

[Thanks, Thomas G.]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

Nokia's 6301 UMA candybar hitting Europe in Q4

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Orange, Symbian, GSM

Helloooo convergence. Let's all take a moment to welcome Nokia's latest UMA handset to offer seamless voice and data mobility across GSM and WiFi networks. As such, Nokia's 6301 is an all-in-one, landline/cellphone solution be you at home or out and about. Unfortunately for some, home is defined as "select markets in European" for this tri-band candybar with up to 3.5-hours of talk time, 2-inch QVGA display, microSD expansion, 2 megapixel camera, MP3 player and FM radio, and integrated hands-free speaker. Hitting Orange's Unik/Unique service in Q4 of 2007 for an estimated pre-tax, pre-subsidized price of €230.

Gallery: Nokia's 6301 UMA candybar hitting Europe in Q4

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

Steve Jobs in Berlin tomorrow, France on Thursday?

Filed under: Handsets, O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Apple, OS X

Just as speculated yesterday, it appears that the Apple honcho is working his way across Europe, moving nation-to-nation to spread the good word of iPhone wherever his New Balance touch ground. Not content with just launching the device in London for the O2 network, the company is taking this show on the road, traveling to Berlin on Wednesday where Jobs and his turtleneck will supposedly announce a partnership for the iPhone with T-Mobile. Expect EDGE, lots of screen touching, and Steve saying, "OH-, eine weitere Sache." Then, as we hear, it's off to France for some sightseeing. As we quickly approach Apple's "mums the word" event in London, the reports have been flying in concerning all sorts of carriers rocking the iPhone in the very near future. Now, we've got France's Orange joining O2's supposed UK deal and Germany's Vodafone / T-Mobile juggle. The rumors are saying we can expect a €300 French iPhone (sans 3G and unlimited data plans) on November 29th, with an announcement during the Apple Expo in Paris on September 24th, though the picture we're seeing clearly shows the blurry-as-all-get-out phone touting the T-Mobile carrier name. Here's hoping there's something else under the tree from Orange during the holidays this year, because we just aren't getting a festive feel from that lot.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

iPhone for T-Mobile Germany announcement on the way?

Filed under: Handsets, O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Apple, OS X

Ever since (and perhaps before) the iPhone hit the US market, we've been hearing rumors of an imminent European release, which was confirmed by the company many, many months ago. Of course, there's been no movement besides rampant speculation and high-school style gossiping... but that may all be changing. According to the ridiculously-respected Reuters in an article published today, the German telephone giant Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile to you and me), has inked a deal with Apple to release the iPhone in the Fatherland (AKA Germany), with an official announcement to be made next week. The report (which is still considered rumor) claims that the phones will go on sale for the initial price of €399 ($554), and that Apple and T-Mobile will split voice and data revenue generated by the phones. Additionally, Reuters says that Apple will make similar arrangements with O2 for the UK, and Orange in France. If this news is accurate, it all but squashes the Vodafone deal rumors, but still leaves questions as to whether Apple will introduce a 3G version of the iPhone when it makes its announcements. Only El-Jobso knows for sure.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Orange wary of Nokia Music Store, threatens to avoid N81

Genuine concern for the "customer experience" or genuine concern for its music revenue stream? It's hard to gauge Orange's true intentions here, but basically, the European carrier is threatening to avoid carrying the 8GB variant of Nokia's N81 -- the one with the Nokia Music Store on it instead of Orange's own -- on fears that they haven't seen the service yet and have no idea whether it'll be easy for customers to use. A rather testy memo sent from Orange to Nokia reveals that Orange has given Nokia until August 31 (that's tomorrow!) to offer it the opportunity to test the Music Store side by side with its own service; if Nokia declines, Orange will respond in kind by dropping its planned order for a crapload of "exclusive blue" N81s. Given that the N81 is seen right now as the cornerstone of both Nokia's renewed music and gaming efforts, we're guessing the manufacturer would see a refusal by a major carrier on its own turf to be a slap in the face and a major blow to its plans -- so we're cautiously optimistic that things are gonna work out. In the meantime, Orange, skim as much music revenue as ya can.

[Via mocoNews]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

HTC announces TyTN II / Kaiser for Europe

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Well it's not quite as good as, say, AT&T informing us that we can walk down the block and pick up one this afternoon, but at least HTC has finally given the Kaiser / TyTN II / 8925 an official place in its lineup. Announcing the quad band Windows Mobile 6 handset for European carriers this morning, HTC revealed that Orange, Voda, T-Mobile, and o2 will all get their hands on this Hermes successor, and all the HSDPA, WiFi, and built-n GPS goodness that comes with it. We wish we had more info on plans for a US release, but with TyTN II hitting the EU in October, we suspect it's only a matter of weeks until we can toss the old 8525 into the retired gadgets drawer. According to FinancialTimes, "Apple has succeeded in committing European mobile phone operators that want exclusively to sell its new iPhone to share parts of their revenues with the technology group." The contract, which was signed by T-Mobile Germany, Orange, and O2, "requires that the operators hand over to Apple ten-percent of the revenues made from calls and data transfers by customers over iPhones" -- the same chunk required of those wanting to slap that Made for iPod logo on their accessories. There was a lot of iPhone chatter this week -- although Apple might have done all it can to lock the little bugger down, it seems people are still finding ways to extend and explore its capabilities, while AT&T might have finally gotten the hint about those ridiculous paper bills.

Logic3 unveiled the i-Station Traveler (pictured), the first speaker dock we've seen specifically for the iPhone. While most iPod docks tend to work fine with the iPhone, the $60 Traveller is designed specifically around the horizontal orientation, allowing you to watch movies while the iPhone is docked.

Meebo and Facebook both launched iPhone-specific versions of their sites, allowing you to IM your friends and stalk your exes with all the swoopy-slidey flair you'd expect.

Orange continued to act all coy about potentially being Apple's partner in France, saying only that it had "no comment" on the iPhone, even as rumors heat up.

The iPhone got straight-up benchmarked for the first time: Craig Hockenberry whipped out his stopwatch and discovered that Javascript in MobileSafari runs right around eighty times slower than on a 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo Mac. He also whipped up a little app using that pirate toolchain we love so much and discovered that native ARM code runs right around 200 times faster than Javascript in the iPhone. Looks like that Safari sandbox might not be so "sweet" after all.

AT&T seems to have decided that its vendetta against the trees of the world might be a little misplaced, and is in the process of moving to "summary billing," according to a call center employee. Either that, or they're trying to guilt people into switching to e-billing by sending out ridiculous bills. Really, that's what the email says.

All in all, a pretty busy week for the iPhone -- kinda makes you wonder how much action there'll be when Apple finally releases that official SDK, eh?

Read - i-Station Traveler
Read - Meebo
Read - Facebook
Read - Orange declines to comment on the iPhone
Read - iPhone benchmarks
Read - AT&T reducing paper bills

[Thanks, risingsonn and The Boy Genius]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

HTC Touch gets hooked up on Orange France, too

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/08/01/htc-touch-gets-hooked
