Certain features we really never get tired of reporting, because, well, they're far rarer than they should be. Case in point: the elusive 3.5mm headphone jack, a drop-dead obvious spec that allows real, actual headphones to be plugged in without the aid of a device curiously referred to as a "dongle" in some circles. The LG KM501 for the Taiwanese market is pretty plain by most definitions -- 2 megapixel camera, dedicated music controls, polarizing black / red styling, EDGE data, microSD slot, and A2DP -- but the thing that keeps drawing us back in is that darned jack. Why don't all phones have one of these? Can someone please explain that to us in simple terms? No word on if or when this one might be found outside of Taiwan, which as far as we're concerned, is a travesty for real headphone lovers everywhere.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

LG throws India a three-pack of new models

From the very low to the relatively high end, three new models LG's unleashed on its Indian customers this month run the full range of price points while still managing to pack in music playback across the board. Starting on the bottom, the KP110 is a member of LG's Bullet series (we're not seeing the resemblance to an actual munition, but whatevs) and is being targeted squarely at first-time phone buyers with a microSD slot and FM radio headlining the feature list. Next, the Dynamite KP320's actually a heck of a phone -- 3.2 autofocus megapixels worth, to be exact -- with TV out and A2DP to boot. Rounding out the launches in LG's global KF510 fashion slider with a 3 megapixel cam and a pair of color choices. Look for the three to run Rs. 2,899, 7,990, and 12,250 (about $69, $190, and $291) respectively.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

LG intros KM380 music phone in China

Thank you, LG, thank you for getting it. A music phone should have a 3.5mm headphone jack -- no exceptions -- and the new KM380 destined for the Chinese market has exactly that, not to mention a clever set of external controls on the outside of the flip dedicated to tune control. Failing to bring something like this onto the low end of your American or European offerings is pretty weak, but maybe this marks the beginning of a new chapter for you -- a "Golden Age" of music phones. Or maybe not. We can hope.

[Via Slashphone]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Hands-on with the LG Vu, Samsung Access, and AT&T Mobile TV

Filed under: Handsets, Features, Multimedia, LG, Samsung, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

These days, voice is the tip of the iceberg. Carriers are always -- and we do mean always -- looking for crafty ways to boost their average revenue per user, and with everyone and their brother offering an unlimited voice plan at this point, it's about data and value-add services more than it ever has been before. To that end, Verizon and AT&T have embraced MediaFLO as a way to keep their subscribers entertained on the road to the tune of a few extra bucks per month. AT&T's service, simply christened Mobile TV, has just launched with a pair of devices from Samsung and LG; naturally, we wanted to know whether the phones were worth the $199 and $299 AT&T's asking, respectively -- but perhaps more importantly, we had to figure out whether the service was worth sucking another $15 a month out of our already-strained wallets.

Gallery: Hands-on with the LG Vu, Samsung Access, and AT&T Mobile TV

Continue reading Hands-on with the LG Vu, Samsung Access, and AT&T Mobile TV

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

New LG slider in Verizon ad? The darndest things can happen when you don't have your marketing and product development groups on exactly the same page. Case in point: this ad, astutely observed by a reader and sent in. It clearly depicts a phone that doesn't exist -- at least not officially. The closest analog we can draw to it would be Alltel's LG Glimmer, though it doesn't share the Glimmer's chin below the keypad. Our guess, honestly, is that some Photoshop wiz slapped an oversized VZ Navigator screen shot on a Venus, added a stupendously huge Verizon logo below it just for effect, and called it a day. Anyone else want to chime in on this?

[Thanks, Zachary D.]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sliders, colors the themes with AT&T's new arrivals

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Sony Ericsson, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

In case you hadn't heard, there's a battle raging for the hearts and minds of Europeans looking for a fashionable slider with a powerhouse camera. Both Samsung and LG are stepping up to the plate to address that very specific need this summer, with Samsung delivering the u900 Soul -- a phone it claims will be the last in its Ultra line -- and LG bringing the similarly named (and similarly spec'd) KF750 Secret. Initial reviews for both devices seem overwhelmingly positive, so don't expect them to necessarily help you choose which one to buy; instead, we suspect it might come down to brand preference, the Soul's nifty OLED d-pad, and the Secret's touchscreen. Both have HSDPA 2100 while rejecting North America's 3G airwaves, so for some of us, this battle is a bit of a moot point -- but for the rest of you, best of luck picking your '08 weapon of choice.

[Thanks, TI]

Read - MobileBurn reviews the Samsung Soul
Read - CNET UK reviews the LG Secret

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

NTT DoCoMo getting its own Prada phone from LG

Filed under: Handsets, LG, NTT DoCoMo

What sort of sick, twisted world did we just wake up inside where NTT DoCoMo is getting rehashed has-been phones launched many, many months ago elsewhere? We're kidding -- sort of -- but we do find it a bit strange that Japan's favorite omniscient megacarrier is just now getting around to announcing its own LG Prada after the original KE850 model entered our hearts and minds almost a year and a half ago. Some of that embarrassment is salvaged in the form of NTT DoCoMo-specific changes and upgrades, or so they allege, anyway; all we're really seeing is the presence of 7.2Mbps data, even though the press release insists that the new model has been "redeveloped specifically" for 'em. Otherwise, fashionistas of the Far East will be treated to a 2 megapixel autofocus cam and a 3-inch wide QVGA display when it launches next month.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Bell Canada set to unleash LG Vantage and Samsung Ace

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Samsung, Bell Mobility, Windows Mobile, EV-DO, CDMA

Bell Canada seem to have decided that cool, tricked out mobiles are what the customers are clamoring for, and we'd bet they're right. The Samsung Ace (on left) and LG Vantage are set to spill onto shelves in the very near term. The Ace is a dual-mode phone featuring both EV-DO connectivity and dual-band GSM -- No 3G in sight, sadly -- Windows Mobile 6 Standard, 1.3 megapixel camera -- seriously, why bother? -- microSD, and that lovely Blackjack look and feel. The Ace is set to launch May 12, though no word on pricing just yet. Also new on the scene is the LG Vantage, a really slick looking Slide-esque slider but with a touchscreen, 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and a microSD slot that'll allow up to 4GB of memory. The Vantage is set for launch on the 16th May and tentative pricing is set at $225 on a three year, $325 on two years, and $425 off contract. Well done Bell, nice to see a little more international roaming sans having to buy into a BlackBerry.

[Via MobileInCanada and terence889 on Howardforums]

If ever there were an LG Shine to live up to its lofty name, this would definitely be it. We'd like to introduce you to the Iron Man phone -- presented here by our boy Robert Downey, Jr. -- based on the Shine slider as sold by AT&T. Unlike the garden-variety Shine, the Iron Man edition trades up to a deep red case with gold plated highlights and a solid 18K gold battery cover to commemorate the launch of the film in style. That's plenty enough element 79 to give this thing some serious heft. We're not bragging, though -- we want you to have it.

The phone is valued at a princely $1,500; twenty are being given away by LG directly -- we've got the twenty first. How do you pry it out of our hands? Easy: we want to see just how nasty, disgusting, and close to complete breakdown your current face candy is. Send us a pic and tell us a little bit about your poor, dilapidated phone and the long journey it's taken to its current state of disrepair. We'll pick the saddest entry and let you retire that terrible thing for something just a little flashier.

One word of advice though: don't bother breaking your phone or taking a photo of your dad's Dynatac or something, that's not what we're looking for.

Check out the gallery to see shots of the very Iron Man phone that could be yours, and don't forget to enter. Good luck!

The rules (yeah, there are always rules)
No surprises here -- particularly since LG's Vu has been on sale through a number of AT&T retail outlets since late last month (whoops!). Today, however, the carrier is officially listing LG's latest for sale, and the Mobile TV-supporting handset is going for a stiff $549.99 sans contract, or $299.99 after giving away your cellular soul for two years and waiting anxiously for a $100 mail-in rebate to arrive. So our friendly local postman dropped this little gem off at our door this morning! That's right, your eyes don't deceive you -- it's an LG Vu of the CU920 variety, complete with Mobile TV support. We haven't had a chance to get the TV service up and running just yet, but we wanted to throw up a few visuals for everyone to feast on. In short, the screen's beautiful, we're pretty happy with the touch control so far, and we're pretty shocked at just how light this phone is. Click on, people! Do it!

Gallery: Hands-on with the LG Vu in retail clothing

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Video: AT&T launching Mobile TV May 4th, demonstrated on LG Vu

Filed under: Handsets, Multimedia, LG, Samsung, ATT

MediaFLO is about to cut loose for AT&T customers this morning and we've got video to prove it. After the break you'll find Mobile TV running on LG's new $300 (2-year, after $100 rebate) Vu, one of just two Mobile TV compatible handsets launching on AT&T May 4th -- the other being the $200 (2-year, after $100 rebate) Samsung Access. Performance looks reasonably snappy when scrolling through the channel guide although some of the exclusive PIX and CNN Mobile Live content is not yet available. S'ok, AT&T has three more days to throw the big blue switch on the broadcast TV service which includes a $15/month unlimited Mobile TV access plan. Hear that Verizon? AT&T's about to step all over your portable TV game in the US market.

[Via MyFoxUtah]
Continue reading Video: AT&T launching Mobile TV May 4th, demonstrated on LG Vu

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

LG Vus popping up in AT&T stores ahead of launch

Filed under: Handsets, LG, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Stores have started stocking up on Vus ahead of their launch next week, and we're getting a little photography here to prove it. It looks like this one is an honest-to-goodness CU920, too, meaning it sports MediaFLO reception -- either that, or AT&T was too lazy to put the Mobile TV-less CU915 model in a different package without the "TV" icon on the screen. We're still hearing May 5 is the official launch day for these, but it seems some locations are selling early, so try your luck and let us know how it goes, k?

[Thanks, Kal]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

LG enV(2) graces Verizon tomorrow

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

Get those textin' thumbs ready, peeps, because your latest weapon of choice is just about ready for you. LG's enV(2)-- a phone that we'd argue takes attractive design far more seriously than its predecessor -- will be available in exchange for a reasonable sum of cash (or cash equivalent) tomorrow, April 30, in Verizon stores across the land. Far more than a mere text machine, the enV(2) features a 2 megapixel camera, microSD slot, GPS, and a big ol' 2.4-inch display when the clam is opened. The only question left, really, is black or maroon?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Trio of LGs get dated for Verizon?

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

phoneArena appears to have scored information on exactly when Verizon will be (or would like to be, anyway) releasing three new models from LG, all of which should be attracting some serious attention in their own right. Headlining the group is the VX9700 "Dare" -- Verizon's Prada-alike, if you recall -- which is allegedly now being targeted for a July 4 online release and an in-store launch shortly thereafter (we'd say those dates put it at risk of cannibalization from the Glyde, but the Dare'll win the photography battle with a 3.2 megapixel sensor versus the Glyde's measly 2). Next up, the trick VX8610 with the internal Bluetooth headset has apparently been christened "Decoy" and is tracking for May 30 online and June 9 in store. Finally, the VX8650 Chocolate Flip gets ready to mercilessly slaughter its VX8600 predecessor come June 24 on your trusty web browser with brick-and-mortar locations getting theirs in July. Naturally, launch dates tend to have the solidity of Jello, so don't be dropping your life savings on any wagers here with your shady friends. Not yet, anyway.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

LG's new Wine Phone has big screens, comfort

If you find yourself squinting at your celly but can't bear the thought of investing in a Jitterbug, LG has a phone that might catch your (bespectacled) eye. The new senior-friendly SV390/LV3900 Wine Phone features a larger screen inside (2.4-inches) and out (1.8-inches) for reading text "comfortably," plus larger buttons for aging fingers to press more comfortably, too. Beyond the up-sized screens your $400 gets you leather texture on the outside and a fancy digital camera, though not much else, much like LG's slightly smaller (and equally featureless) SV300 from last year. It's available now only in Korea, meaning those with bad eyes and big thumbs in the U.S. will either have to stick with their Jitterbugs or just keep squinting. We'd squint.

[Via SlashPhone]
Continue reading LG's new Wine Phone has big screens, comfort

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tim Stevens

Rumored Prada II specs surface in purported leaked press release

It looks like those that have been holding out for a new and improved Prada phone from LG could soon be getting their fix, at least if a purported leaked press release is to be believed. According to Taiwan's ePrice, the Prada II is supposedly on track for a release in the fourth quarter of 2008, with it bringing with it a whole host of upgrades that some may say sound suspiciously like a wish list. That includes quad-band GSM, WCDMA 900/2100, and 7.2 Mbps HSDPA connectivity, along with a 5-megapixel camera (with support for video calls), a 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen, built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, TV-out, and a microSD card slot. Oh, and a slide-out QWERTY keypad. Needless to say, while we certainly wouldn't bet against a Prada II of some sort coming out this year, it's probably best not to get your hopes up too much about each and every one of those specs just yet.

[Via Unwired View]

Germany's been one of the European countries protesting the hardest against the EU's selection of DVB-H as the union's mobile TV standard of choice -- and for good reason, seeing how it already had a nice little chunk of cash sunk into T-DMB. We're not sure if this is Germany's version of passive-aggressive civil disobedience or if this is just how they plan on rolling for the time being, but Vodafone Germany is actually looking at rolling out a pair of phones next month that simply pull down plain ol' DVB-T signals -- the kind generally destined for home televisions, not pockets. This obviously gives the service a far larger footprint and content profile right off the bat, but the tradeoff is that DVB-T was never designed for the small screen and suffers from a greater power draw than either DVB-H or T-DMB. Anyhoo, the phones in question are the Windows Mobile-powered g-Smart t600 from Gigabyte alongside LG's HB620T clamshell. Both are expected to go out the door for about €100 ($159) on contract, apparently, which is just as well seeing how the t600 lacked 3G data last time we checked in on it. Who'd really trade fast data for television that's going to drain your battery faster than you can say "David Hasselhoff," anyway?

[Via the::unwired]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

LG's 5 megapixel KF750 with DivX rebranded Secret, shhh

LG's KF750 was just announced official-like by the non-rioting folks at Lucky Goldstar. With it, we get the official specs courtesy of, uh, Photography Blog. Why is a site for digital photogs carrying a cellphone press release, you ask? Easy, this one's got a 5 megapixel camera with face recognition and the ability to shoot DivX video at 120fps. A member of LG's Black Label series, the 11.8-mm slider is the thinnest 5 megapixel cameraphone on the market. Unfortunately the press release is heavy on fluff and light on specs so we can only tell you that it'll also be sporting a touch-screen, suite of mobile Google apps, and Bluetooth when it makes its European debut sometime this year, presumably, for an unknown price.

Update: A few more details are rolling in: 2.4-inch display, haptic feedback, and available in May.

[Via Stuff.tv and Digital-Lifestyles]

Read -- Secret micro site (so secret it's currently down)
Read -- Press release

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

LG's Viewty is viewtiful, or something, in purple

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Orange, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS
We liked the Viewty in black. Strong work, Telus! First you guys are pretty much on the ball with your release of the BlackBerry 8330 Curve and the Motorola Q9c, and now you've become the first Canadian carrier to offer the LG Venus -- and you're clearly reveling in it, too, since you point out on your product page that this is actually LG's first touchscreen phone in all of Canada. $99.99 CAD (about $100) of your customer's hard-earned savings is going to net them a 2 megapixel camera, QVGA primary display, microSD slot, GPS, EV-DO, and stereo Bluetooth, so we'd say you've done good -- for the moment, anyway. Keep up the strong work.

[Thanks, Jesse]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Touchy TV: quick start guides surface for the LG Vu

Filed under: Handsets, Features, LG, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

While we're all twiddling our thumbs and waiting patiently for next month's Vu release on AT&T, we suppose some reading materials couldn't hurt, right? We've found no earth-shattering surprises in these quick guides that are filtering their way into corporate stores, but we do think it's kinda funny that they're pushing Cellular Video right alongside Mobile TV on page one; then again, with a MediaFLO launch that covers just a fraction of AT&T's total coverage area, we suppose we'll still need some entertainment when we're out in the sticks. Video Share instructions are here, along with the comforting reminder that a light finger press is sufficient to operate the Vu's touch screen -- so yeah, we're pretty much educated and ready, AT&T. Although that isn't necessarily an outlandish thing to believe (Verizon's exclusivity period probably lasts 12 months at most, after all), it implies that at least two additional versions of the Voyager would have to be in the works: a CDMA piece without MediaFLO for Sprint and, of course, a GSM variant for AT&T. The news comes on the heels of LG's triumphant claim that they've shipped a whopping 1.1 million Voyagers since launch -- a pretty impressive number considering that the phone just launched at the very tail end of 2007 -- and a number that could pretty easily triple if these other carrier deals turn out to be legit.

[Thanks, Jeremy]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

LG VX8610 caught in the wild, internal Bluetooth headset and all

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

If you're able to turn your attention away from that Jawbone 2 long enough to look elsewhere for your Bluetooth headset needs, we might remind you that Verizon's prepping a Chocolate successor with a little surprise tucked safely away. We've seen and heard of the VX8610's juicy secret for a couple months now, promising a media-centric slider with an integrated headset that'll charge via the integrated dock when not in use -- a feature not totally unique in the mobile world, but still unique enough to be a pretty big deal, particularly as US carrier launches go. Of course, a decent handset could be ruined by an awful headset here, so let's hope LG's smart enough to put some thought behind the total package. Follow the break for a shot of the headset and dock.

[Thanks, Ingenious]

Continue reading LG VX8610 caught in the wild, internal Bluetooth headset and all

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

LG touchscreen UI contest ends... in a racecar?

We're not sure how LG managed to hold a touchscreen UI design contest with a $14K prize without telling anyone, but it certainly did -- and keeping things on the DL probably explains why "Driving," pictured above, was the winning entry. The "Art in Mobile" contest started last December in Korea, and the 10 winning entries will see their creations actually turned into functional phone interfaces. There's not much info on the other nine winners, but apparently one is called "Sixty Seconds" and is designed to stall for a minute before connecting a call so you can browse photos and check messages. Uh, yeah -- if our phones were taking a minute to connect calls, we'd have a bigger problem than the UI. Seriously, LG, next time you want some consumer input on phone interfaces, we think we might know some people with ideas.

[Via Unwired View]

Read - Telecoms Korea story on the contest
Read - Translated LG press release

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

Thin is in: LG shares a glimpse of its 5 megapixel hottie phone

Great news, Mr. and Mrs. Tighty Pants: carrying five megapixels in your pocket is about to become a little less obvious! The latest member of LG's storied Black Label line -- other alumni being the Chocolate and the Shine -- is starting to break cover, and for what the slider might lack in sheer visual distinction, it makes up in technical prowess. The as-yet-unnamed slider promises to be the thinnest 5 megapixel cameraphone in the world when it launches, featuring a reinforced glass touchscreen up front (just a little Glimmer-esque, if you ask us) and a shell constructed from carbon fiber. Other than that, LG's being a little stingy with details at this point, saying that it'll unveil the handset's name later this month -- hopefully along with pricing and a full spec sheet. The phone will hit Europe first with a number of other launches across the globe thereafter, finally hitting LG's own South Korea in the second half.

[Via T3]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

LG LX400, Motorola V950, and pair of Samsungs round out Sprint's QChat fare

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Sprint, EV-DO, CDMA

As we've long known, Sanyo isn't the only company contributing goodies to the opening volley of CDMA Direct Connect devices for Sprint -- LG, Motorola, and Samsung all want in on the action, too. LG brings the LX400, featuring a 1.3 megapixel camera in a burgundy shell; it's not our cup of tea, but folks looking for something on the non-rugged side of the PTT spectrum might find their soulmate here. Next up, the Motorola V950 is pretty notable since it marks Moto's inevitable foray away from its own iDEN tech and toward something just a little more modern to support the push-to-talk functionality its users so deeply love. It's a media powerhouse, too, thanks to external music controls, a microSD slot, stereo Bluetooth, and a 2 megapixel cam. Finally, Samsung comes to the table with two models: the rubberized Z400 (surprisingly appearing to be the most hardcore of the foursome) that trades consumer-friendly features for a tough shell -- though they've still felt the need to slap a 1.3 megapixel cam on there -- and the Z700, a fancy, refined set that looks fit for duty in the most fancy of pockets and shares much of its spec sheet with the Moto V950. Pricing and availability haven't been announced for any of the four, but we imagine they'll be pretty reasonable given the overall modesty across the line.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Hands-on with LG's Iron Man handset, it's Superhero approved

Not so -- well almost -- for LG's Shine as Iron Man handset, this thing is so exclusive, it apparently won't ever hit the retail channels, and at about $2k a pop, nobody will miss it. Of course, there isn't much new here, it's a typical LG Shine with a dab of 18k Gold -- and by dab we mean, the battery cover is solid, solid gold -- and a fetching maroon color that nicely coordinates with Iron Man's fab suit. Follow the link for a pile more pics of the handset and a few of Iron Man, too.

Gallery: Hands-on with LG's Iron Man handset, it's Superhero approved

Okay, our excitement about this one was just tempered a little bit. From the front, it's still a really cool (dare we say attractive) device when closed, but it seems to suggest a side profile that just isn't there. On the contrary, the enV(2) is pretty thick and ugly when glanced from its side -- by necessity, we suppose -- and the interior is pretty reminiscent of enVs and Voyagers of yore. Don't get us wrong, we think Verizon's going to sell a million of these -- we just came into it hoping for a little more industrial design beyond the wild new face.

Gallery: Hands-on with LG's enV(2) for Verizon

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Hands-on with the LG Vu

Filed under: Handsets, Features, LG, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

We just played with the Vu here, and we have to say -- while it's hard to deny the attraction of a huge touchscreen, it's just a little light and unsubstantial in the hands. Then again, if we have to levy a complaint against a device, "too light" is a pretty weak one. The UI is typical LG for this category of device -- think Viewty -- but we're happy to report that the screen itself doesn't exhibit the same flimsiness that we detected when we reviewed the KU990 some time back. Since you won't be able to get any closer than this to a Vu before May, check out some shots, won't you?

Gallery: Hands-on with the LG Vu

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Verizon surprises no one with XV6900, Motorola Q9c, and LG enV(2)

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, LG, Motorola, Verizon Wireless, Windows Mobile, EV-DO, CDMA

Well, here are three that we didn't see coming or anything -- Verizon has officially announced the Motorola Q9c, LG enV(2), and HTC-sourced XV6900 today, all for April availability. The Moto Q9c is a more business-savvy version of the consumer-focused Q9m that was launched on Verizon late last year, with the carrier playing up the new model's VZ Navigator support, Windows Mobile 6 Standard load (yippee?), and -- unfortunately for those whose companies distrust photography -- a 1.3 megapixel camera. This one will launch for $249.99 after rebate on a two-year plan.

Next up we have the enV(2) -- a phone we mistakenly identified previously as the enV2 because we just never could've seen those bonus parenthesis coming -- which succeeds the wildly popular enV and injects a fresh dose of industrial design. Features include a 2 megapixel cam, 2.4 inch internal display accompanied by a smaller screen up front that's just big enough for doing calling duty, microSD slot, and the flip-up QWERTY keyboard the enV series is famous for. It'll run $129.99 after rebate on contract when it launches next month.

Finally, the XV6900 brings Verizon in line with Sprint's Touch, though in a far paler shade. It features the full host of Windows Mobile 6 Professional goodies alongside a 2 megapixel camera, microSD slot, 256MB of ROM, 128MB of RAM, Bluetooth, and HTC's TouchFLO interface. Like the others, it's slated for April availability and will run $349.99 on contract after $50 rebate.

Read - Motorola Q9c
Read - LG enV(2)
Read - Verizon XV6900

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

LG's Viewty KE990 is downgraded KU990, destined for China?

Filed under: Handsets, LG, GSM, EDGE

Remember the KU990 Viewty? Of course you do, well, meet its twin -- but decidedly duller -- sibling, the KE990 -- notice that E? That means EDGE. This handset apparently brings most or all of the same goods to the table as the KU990 did but lacks HSDPA and dumps tri-band for dual. So yeah, rather than stuffing this thing with another HSDPA band -- ah-frickin'-hem -- LG has chosen to head in another, less interesting direction by stripping it of some of what made it glorious in the first place. Of course, if rumors of it going to China prove true, we get that removing the 3G radio will improve battery life and shrink the price a bit for that market -- as not all markets want that 3G speed -- but this still hurts as we're way cooler with more, better, faster around here. Hopefully we'll hear a little something announced at CTIA but until then, we'll simply pretend none of this ever happened.

The lads at phoneArena have gotten their mitts on the first shot of the LG VX8560 and a new pic of the upcoming LG VX9700. The VX9700 hasn't been priced yet, but word has it we can expect it to be landing in Q2 and that it could be called the LG Dare. The new kid on the block, the LG VX8560 seems to be sporting a camera above the front display, has a large d-pad / dial on the front, and looks to be a pretty thin handset for those looking for that RAZR feel. Sadly, that's about it for info on that device, though with CTIA just around the corner, we're bound to be getting some more newsworthy info in the near term.

Those eagerly anticipating the LG Vu now have a little more to go by -- at least visually, anyway. The specs floating around jibe with everything we've heard, and apparently include a nice 3-inch 400 x 240 display. Head on over to Phone Arena for more.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Verizon Hub headlines carrier's 2008 initiatives, devices

Filed under: Handsets, Features, HTC, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Palm, RIM, Samsung, Verizon Wireless, Palm OS, Windows Mobile, EV-DO, CDMA
We've gotten the inside track on a few dates on Verizon's radar for the next few months, and it looks like the boys and girls in red are prepping an interesting mix of exclusive and Sprint catch-ups to keep customers fat and happy. As handsets go, the Motorola Q9c is planned for April along with the TouchFLO-powered XV6900, LG enV2, and the CDMA rendition of the BlackBerry Curve (so much for exclusivity clauses on this one, it seems), while the Samsung Glyde is currently slated for late April or early May. Centro fans will be happy to hear that the diminutive Garnet phone will finally hit Verizon following Sprint and AT&T launches in the tail end of May or the beginning of June, followed shortly by the Nokia 6205, which apparently isn't either the 2505 or 7205 unless one of those flips have been renumbered.

As technology goes, Verizon looks to launch EV-DO Rev. A-based push-to-talk services -- Sprint folks will know this as Qualcomm's QChat -- toward the end of May. We've also caught wind of something called "Verizon Hub," which we're told will go head-to-head with T-Mobile's HotSpot@Home service. It's not known whether this'll be a WiFi setup (a la HotSpot@Home) or adopt Sprint's CDMA femtocell strategy, but seeing how Verizon and Sprint seem to be endlessly engaged in a game of cat and mouse, we wouldn't be surprised to see 'em go with femtocells. We don't have a date on Hub just yet, but it's targeting the second half of the year at the earliest.

Update: Commenters are noting that Verizon's do-all FiOS phone bares the "Verizon Hub" name, though it doesn't go head-to-head with HotSpot@Home -- and the Hub we're referring to is showing up on Verizon Wireless roadmaps. Weird. We'll keep a close eye on this one.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

env2</categ
