HP's iPAQ 900 series smartphones haven't exactly had the smoothest of releases ('round these parts at least) since they were first announced way back in September of last year, but one of 'em has at least managed to recently trickle out into the hands of the lucky folks at the FCC, which could possibly indicate that it's actually nearing a US release. In case you missed it, the Windows Mobile-based phone was previously hinted as coming to AT&T in its iPAQ 910 incarnation, although the FCC unsurprisingly doesn't have anything to say about that possibility. If you want a better idea of what may be in store, however, you can find plenty of pics of the device (including a peek at its innards) and its complete manual at the link below.

There's nothing quite as profoundly unsettling as reading a review about a phone you can't have. For Americans, that's an all-too-common experience -- and thanks to the ongoing Qualcomm / Broadcom drama, even phones that had originally been destined for the colonies have been unceremoniously dropped, destined for regions well beyond the reaches of the legal system. Case in point: HP had originally wanted to bring the interesting iPAQ 610 series here, but backed off at the last second. If you really want one, though, you can still finagle one from an importer -- not to mention that countless Windows Mobile fanatics populate areas of the globe friendlier to HP's latest pocket candy -- so Tracy and Matt's Blog took a close look at the 614c, which is now shipping. Although the reviewer found its Windows Mobile 6 load to be plenty speedy, he also discovered that it was a tad on the chunky side -- not to mention that the 3G radio seemed to be way flaky, the screen is too inset to use entirely stylus-free, and the virtual nav wheel embedded in the keypad (arguably the ace up the 610's sleeve) wasn't much fun to use. Nice try, HP, but on second thought, maybe we're not so broken up that you're keeping it out of the States.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Eyes on with T-Mobile's MDA Compact IV

Filed under: Handsets, T-Mobile, Windows Mobile, HP, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA

What will it be, the good or the bad news first? How 'bout the good. After an initial rebuff, we finally managed to grab some photos of that exclusive T-Mobile MDA compact IV. You remember: 7.2Mbps HSDPA, GPS, VGA resolution screen, WiFi and 4GB of on-board storage. It'll also launch "mit neuestem Microsoft Betriebssytem" which we can safely assume is Windows Mobile 6.1 at this point. Oh yes, and the bad news. It's only a plastic dummy and our photographs were restricted by a glass cube. Still, this is as close as most of you will get for a long, long time. So apparently HP just has a very special form of hatred for its native soil, because that iPAQ 610 series with that nifty touch sensitive scroll wheel embedded in the keypad now appears to be canceled only in the US. This bittersweet news comes courtesy of British retailer Devicewire, which reports that it'll have examples of the iPAQ 614 available to its customers as soon as next Monday for the princely sum of £389.99 (about $765). That's fine, though, HP, whatever. We didn't want your stupid iPAQ anyway.

[Via CoolSmartphone]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

HP cancels the iPAQ 610 smartphone in the US

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, HP

Ah, iPAQ 610. You were so close, and yet... so far away. According to a handful of tipsters, after a round of delays, HP has decided to cancel the release of its upcoming Windows Mobile smartphone, the 610 (also known as the iPAQ 614, 614c and 600). The company didn't give a lot of information, though they did state that, "due to recent legal issues between suppliers of mobile phone technologies, HP has decided not to offer the iPAQ 610 Business Navigator to U.S. customers as previously planned." It's unclear whether this means the phone will be missing from shelves worldwide, but it certainly won't be popping up on these shores anytime soon.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Patent granted on smartphones, everyone sued

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Motorola, Nokia, RIM, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, UTStarcom, ATT, Sprint, HP, Apple

What would you do if the US patent office gave you the go-ahead on a far-reaching, non-specific application filed for a "mobile entertainment and communication device"? If your answer was that you would immediately draw up lawsuits against almost every major electronics manufacturer that even looked at a smartphone funny, you get a cookie. Yes folks, as impossible as it is to believe, the holders of the aforementioned patent have just sued Apple, Nokia, RIM, Sprint, AT&T, HP, Motorola, Helio, HTC, Sony Ericsson, UTStarcomm, and Samsung... amongst others. So eager was this company to sue, in fact, that legal papers were filed a day before the patent was granted, and subsequently had to re-submitted. The real sucker-punch here is that the patent simply combines a list of prior technologies jumbled into one product, a practice which has recently been ruled against by the Supreme Court. Still, we doubt it will stop the holders from trying to nab a few dollars in settlements, staying the work of real innovators, and generally making a mockery of our patent system. Bravo!

[Via Slashdot]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Vodafone's Windows Mobile roadmap revealed, delights aplenty

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Palm, Vodafone, Windows Mobile, HP, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA

Wow, just when we thought Vodafone might not have any more secrets, a couple more were dragged out of the bag. Seems BoyGenius' presentation extraordinaire wasn't complete without laying out exactly what can be expected this year on the Windows Mobile front. As you can see there are a couple new tasty morsels such as a HSDPA tablet with GPS and WiFi -- could be HTC Shift -- an unknown HSDPA slider with GPS and WiFi as well as the previously mentioned Palm Drucker, HP Oak, HP Silver, and Palm Wanda. Big year ahead for Vodafone on the business user front, and we're stoked to catch these things as they start to land, so see ya in Q2 2008 friends.

HP's Oak makes an appearance in the relentless binge of new handset madness that is the Vodafone roadmap. The HP Oak delivers many of the baubles we've come to expect from Windows Mobile devices, things like 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, quad-band GSM, qwerty keyboard, a touchscreen, and even GPS have found there way in. Other connectivity options include the almost standard WiFi and Bluetooth, with chatter time listed as 3.5 hours and 360 hours standby. We're feeling a lot of similarities between this fella and the HTC TyTN II, but the HP gets the puffy rainbow sticker -- with prancing Pegasus, of course -- for opting to add that ultra-handy dialpad on the front. Oak's due date is set for September 2008 at roughly $500.

Palm's not the only company bringing some new Windows Mobile kit to Vodafone this year -- Boy Genius Report's scoopage of Voda's '08 lineup includes a new HP, too. The "Silver" (a codename, we assume) should put the kinda sad iPAQ 510 out of business and appears to take a page straight outta the Pearl's book, right down to the WiFi, GPS, and SureType keyboard (which is surprisingly actually identified as "SureType," a RIM trademark). Unlike the Pearl, though, this sucker rocks Windows Mobile 6 Standard and HSDPA -- a whopping 7.2Mbps of it. Look for it in July for about £250 ($494).

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Even more HP iPAQs getting delayed?

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, HP
Those waiting in tense anticipation for any of HP's iPAQs could be twiddling their thumbs even longer. Amidst the recent delays (and subsequent clarifications) of the 110 and 210 comes news that a whole slew of the devices will not be shipping on time. Reportedly, HP Austria has confirmed to TamsPPC that the 110 won't arrive until early next month, while the 200 series won't land until January of next year. It gets worse -- the 614 / 614c Business Navigator is purportedly delayed until next February, and the 914 / 914c isn't set to arrive until <strike>the cows come home</strike> May of 2008. As for the 314, you can still expect it by the end of next month. Granted, we can't confirm that Austria-based delays will necessarily affect America and the rest of the globe, but it certainly isn't confidence instilling news, regardless.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

HP iPAQ 910 coming to AT&T?

Filed under: Handsets, ATT, Windows Mobile, HP, GSM, HSDPA, UMTS

We're not really used to being buried in an endless array of Windows Mobile devices on any American carrier, but that could be the very problem we all face on AT&T if this latest tidbit materializes. Between the Tilt, Q Global, SMT5700, Pantech Duo, Treo 750, and the BlackJack -- all released or just around the corner -- pretty much every form factor, platform, and price point is covered, and it looks like the recently announced HP iPAQ 910 is in play now, too. Documentation on HP's site calls out the 910c (the version equipped with a 3 megapixel autofocus cam) as destined for AT&T's airwaves, a logical move considering the device's support for HSDPA 850 / 1900. Yeah, the extra choice means extra confusion for consumers just looking for a decent smartphone -- but with GPS, WiFi, and a touchscreen rocking Windows Mobile 6 Professional, we're not about to complain. In its fray of iPAQ introductions today come two new phones from HP -- the first since the rather bland 510 -- potentialy throwing the once-dominant Windows Mobile force back into the hunt. First up, the 600 series Business Navigator comes equipped with integrated GPS, a generous 2.8-inch touchscreen, 128MB of RAM, 256MB of ROM, 3 megapixel autofocus cam, WiFi, and Windows Mobile 6 Professional, all sitting atop a Marvell PXA270 putting along at 520MHz. The 600 rocks a numeric keypad; a dealbreaker for some, yes, but the nifty touch-sensitive scroll wheel integrated into the keys may be enough to sway a few back. The 900 series, meanwhile, swaps out the numeric pad for a standard QWERTY outfit and steps down to a 2.46-inch display, but the specs remain otherwise similar to its stablemate. Notably, the built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, HSDPA, click-wheel, three-megapixel camera, integrated GPS, and Windows Mobile 6 operating system were all highly praised, but the lackluster 320 x 240 resolution display looked to be a (critical) weak point. Nevertheless, the device does look pretty sharp (or maybe we're just suckers for all that connectivity), so be sure and click through for a look at the interview.
Continue reading HP's iPAQ 610 gets demonstrated on video

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

HP's new iPAQ lineup surfaces with fresh photos

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, HP, HSDPA

Hot on the heels of those blurry, low-quality photos of the upcoming HP iPAQs, come these shiny new pics sure to have waiting fans foaming at the mouth. As you can see, the new handhelds are definitely a reality, and now we've got details on added models to the lineup, as well as rumored release information. First and foremost is the iPAQ 914 (pictured), a Windows Mobile smartphone with a 3-megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi, and HSDPA support. HP is also intro'ing the 614, another Windows Mobile device (this one presumably with a touchscreen), plus GPS, WiFi, and HSDPA -- both new phones are said to be selling for around $800. The company is also introducing the 314, a GPS navigator with custom HP software, and the iPAQ 214 and 114 ($500 / $430), two Windows Mobile-based PDAs without any phone functions (though they have WiFi, allowing for VoIP). All of the devices are said to be hitting shelves in October, save for the 914, which is due (supposedly) in November. Feel free to hit the read link for more info, though we warn you, it's in Swedish.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Shots of HP's upcoming iPAQs leaked?

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, HP

We've already heard plenty about this pair, the new 600 and 900 iPAQ series, but the folks over at MoDaCo look to have uncovered the first, albeit sketchy, pictures of the devices. Labeled the iPAQ 614c and 914c, the two devices line up pretty nicely with the rumors, with the 614c rocking a 2.8-inch QVGA screen in a candybar form factor with Windows Mobile 6 Professional, HSDPA, WiFi and a touch wheel, and even tacking on GPS and a 3 megapixel camera to the already juicy list. The 914c rotates the screen and goes QWERTY, with only 2.5-inches due to the orientation, but the same QVGA resolution and the rest of the 614c's specs. If these facts are legit, HP could be fighting back into the smartphone fray in a pretty big way

[Thanks, ZSX]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

HP iPAQ 600 gets Korean confirmation

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, HP, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS
Though spec sheet details still haven't been confirmed, the existence of the rumored iPAQ 600 from HP now seems like a sure thing. A spokesman for HP Korea has said that a "third-generation PDA phone, dubbed the iPAQ 600" will launch on multiple Korean carriers later this year, featuring HSDPA, a numeric keypad, and likely a 2.8 inch display. Of course, a Korean launch doesn't really do us very much good in these parts, but we've gotta believe that HP is going to aim for one or more American launches as well as they've done in the past -- and even if it doesn't, the reported tri-band HSDPA radio should work swimmingly once we get any carrier lock issues taken care of.

[Via the::unwired]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

HP looking to rebuild PDA, smartphone empires?

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, HP, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS
Once the glittering crown jewel of the Windows Mobile world, HP has sat back, taken it easy on R&D, and watched its empire dwindle to an empty husk of what it once was. The reasons are unclear, but other manufacturers have certainly had no qualms about rushing in to fill the void -- most notably HTC, the ODM largely responsible for HP's success in the first place. Does it stand a chance of reclaiming the throne? Eh, with so many competitors in the game at this point, probably not, but that may not stop it from trying. Rumors have been swirling the last few days that HP will surround its iPAQ 510 Windows Mobile 6 Standard smartphone with a wide variety of devices positioned both above and below it, and if the details pan out, there could definitely be a few winners in the bunch. The 600 series is said to be similar to the 510 in form factor -- candybar with a numeric keypad -- but will add tri-band HSDPA, a touch sensitive navigation wheel, double the RAM and ROM, and will sport Windows Mobile Professional in place of Standard. The 900 should be largely similar, but trades the numeric keypad for a QWERTY version. Word on the street is that these should be announced in September with availability late in the year -- if it all turns out to be true, we wish the best of luck to ya, HP!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

HP Labs and mobile phones: coloring people beautiful

Mobiles can do just about anything these days -- and oh! do we love it -- but fashion and color choice advice was apparently lacking. HP Lab's new software "Color Match mobile service" has come to the rescue armed with color wheels and image processing software, to save society from the perils of mismatched make-up. If it's any consolation, the models won't be offered with Windows Mobile 6 preinstalled either (because let's face it, it'd just be downright insulting to be teased with an upgrade you can't have) though all future models out of the company will mercifully be rocking Redmond's latest and greatest.

[Via the::unwired]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

HP shows the HTC of yesterday as concept of tomorrow

We've seen concept phones galore over the years, but a recent prototype spotted at the If Design Awards at this year's CeBIT convention piqued our interest a bit more than usual. Purportedly envisioned by Teague, the sure-to-be-renamed "Data Center Communications Vision of the Future Server" for HP looks to be a Pocket PC / rugged handheld hybrid with a slideout QWERTY keyboard, oversized touchscreen display, and quite a chunky motif. Of course, we doubt this will turn out to be your average PDA / phone, as it reportedly boasts "integrated hardware / software mobile technology to allow IT personnel to monitor data center equipment, diagnose and track problems, and perform system services" as well. Essentially, this presumably beastly device is intended to interface with HP servers and data centers rather than catering to the typical style-conscious consumer, as it even touts RFID / Bluetooth connectivity options to assist administrators in resolving outstanding issues sans wires. As with most products still stuck in the Photoshop stage, there's no word on whether this thing will actually hit the market, nor if it'll show up primarily through enterprise channels if it makes it that far, but it looks like the diagnostic handheld market is just starting to get interesting nonetheless.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

HP iPAQ 510 Voice Messenger

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, HP, GSM, GPRS, EDGE

It looks like HP's taking another shot at the Smartphone market -- a market it's only halfheartedly attempted to breach in the past -- with the new iPAQ 510 Voice Messenger. The candybar (which, in our humblest of opinions, bears an uncanny resemblance to the Nokia N70) will run Windows Mobile 6 Standard and top out with quadband GSM / EDGE, though the inclusion of 802.11b / g spices things up a bit on the data side and throws the possiblity of VoIP into the mix. A quick glance at the spec sheet shows a 220 x 176 display, 128MB ROM and 64MB RAM, microSD expansion, Bluetooth 1.2, and a lowly 200MHz OMAP850 to keep everything humming along without killing battery juice. See the latest iPAQ minus the glitz and glamor of the press photography in the gallery!

The speculation is over kids, mobile-review got themselves a copy of the next major release of the Windows Mobile OS and slapped up a review for all to see. Codenamed "Crossbow," the mobile OS is expected to hit sometime in the first half of 2007 under what can be assumed to be a Windows Mobile 6.0 moniker. Although, as the review points out, a full numeric update is a bit generous as it could just as well be dubbed Windows Mobile 5.0 Second Edition given the lack of new features. For that, you'll have to wait another few years for Photon which will finally unify the Pocket PC and Smartphone divisions -- it's the former (a near-RTM development version) under review. So, now that your expectations are fully deflated, what are we looking at? To start with, most of the new functions in Crossbow are meant to play nice with the 2007 release of Office and Exchange. Just to run down the highlights, we're getting a fully revamped Outlook Mobile app with new Vista-inspired sounds and themes, Windows Live integration featuring Live Search Mobile, Live Mail Mobile, Live Messenger Mobile (which, ironically, was first available on Symbian S60 3rd edition deivces) all available direct from the Today screen, VoIP (SIP) support bundled into the phone-related part of the system, and Smart Dial 2.0 integration for fast search through contacts just like WinMo 5.0 SmartPhone edition. We're still looking at a typical 64MB ROM / 64MB RAM footprint and a minimum 200MHz CPU. Overall, the system performance is speedier throughout due to continued efforts at optimization started with AKU 3.0. There are few more changes of course but what we're looking at here is not an attempt to leapfrog the competition, rather, Crossbow is an effort just to keep the pace which ain't all bad. Oh, and good news for HP and E-Ten device owners, you'll likely have the option of updating to the new OS via a firmware update -- everyone else had best get to pestering their manufacture or trolling the torrents for the bump.

[Thanks, Eldar]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

Cingular hooks up with TeleNav for LBS

Filed under: Handsets, Software, HTC, Palm, ATT, Palm OS, Windows Mobile, HP, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS
Following its CDMA and iDEN competitors headlong into the hot location-based services game, Cingular is finally poised mark their first wide-scale LBS deployment by hooking up with TeleNav to offer turn-by-turn navigation to its customers. Though the service will be marketed mainly toward the carrier's business users, pretty much anyone with a lousy sense of direction stands to benefit, with both auto and pedestrian modes included in the box. We have to admit that we're not quite as excited about the hw6920 / hw6925 (with / without camera) as we were, like, nine months ago, but its release is still notable due to the fact that it'll be one of the first mass-market US smartphones to include integrated GPS hardware and software (in the form of TeleNav's GPS Navigator). As you're probably well aware from both the official and leaked spec sheets we've covered, this 416MHz, Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU2-powered handset also features Bluetooth with A2DP, 802.11g, a 1.3 megapixel camera, miniSD slot, reportedly-loud keyboard, and frustrating 240 x 240 pixel screen. The only other major downside here is the lack of a 3G radio, although the GPRS / EDGE capabilities should offer decent connectivity while you search for the nearest hotspot. Obviously having your cake and (almost) eating it too doesn't come cheap, as the hw6920 will start at $360 with a two-year contract and continue to climb skyward.

[Via Mobility Site, thanks Ronald D.]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Evan Blass

HTC buyout of Dopod in final stages: i-mate, O2, HP wail

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Windows Mobile, HP
Continuing their skyrocket beyond ODM-dom, HTC's buyout bid for Taiwanese Dopod has moved into the final stages. Having signed a memorandum of understanding, the only thing left in the estimated $150 million deal is approval from the Taiwanese government. Assuming HTC chairwoman and Dopod controlling shareholder Cher Wang, daughter of petrochemicals billionaire Y.C. Wang and wife of HTC boss-man Peter Chou, has enough influence to push this through (read: she does), then HTC is about to find themselves in direct competition with their own customers O2, i-mate and HP. HTC already confirmed their decision to self-brand phones in Europe, now the Dopod deal could result in HTC designs being sold exclusively under the Dopod branding outside of Europe. In fact, HTC has already cut ties with both O2 and i-mate in Australia, New Zealand, and India. So if Dopod's claim that HTC manufactures 80 percent of Windows Mobile phones is true, well, O2, i-mate, and HP best be looking for fresh design and manufacturing blood on the quick.

[Thanks, Ash]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

HP iPAQ hw6940 hits retail channels, finally

Filed under: Handsets, ATT, Windows Mobile, HP, GSM, GPRS, EDGE

Has HP come through in the clutch -- or is it too little, too late? That's the question Pocket PC-hungry consumers will be answering in the next few weeks now that the long... nay, long-rumored hw6940 Mobile Messenger is finally shipping stateside. We were sorta excited about this thing, like, nine months ago, but at this point we're not sure how we feel about Bluetooth 1.2, a pedestrian 64MB of RAM, and the lack of 802.11g -- not to mention that the inclusion of AKU2 doesn't command the same respect it did just a few short months back. Add to that the $600 this thing will set you back, and needless to say we're hoping Cingular's going to bless it with a hefty subsidy when it finally drops in their neck of the woods.

[Via MobilitySite]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Star Trek, hw6900 series coming to Cingular next week?

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, ATT, Windows Mobile, HP, GSM, GPRS, EDGE
Cingular rebate forms circulating over the past couple days are indicating the presence of three devices -- HP's hw6920 / hw6925 and HTC's Star Trek, offered here as the 3125 -- and while too much time has passed for us to get too worked up at the thought of putting our hands on any of these, they're worth noting nonetheless. Now, the popular rumor says that since these puppies have shown up with rebates, they're in the pipeline for delivery next week. While we're hoping that's true, we're not betting on it. Cingular has a reputation for placing rebates on phones ages before their retail availability -- heck, it's not even unheard of for rebates to expire before the phone even drops. So if next week comes and goes and one, two, or all three of these handsets are nowhere to be found, just remember: a pessimist is never disappointed.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

The Boy Genius Report: HTC Hermes & StarTrek, and iPAQ hw6920 coming to US

Filed under: Handsets, Features, HTC, ATT, Windows Mobile, HP, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA

Field report tidbits from Engadget's mobile insider, the Boy Genius.

If this latest Boy Genius scoop is correct, then Cingular's also launching a slew of Windows Mobile phones this summer, some less surprising than others. The HP iPAQ hw6920/25 was more or less expected any time now, and should have WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, EDGE data, and MSFP / AKU2, as expected (you probably already knew the rest). The HSDPA-equipped HTC Hermes is also making its way to these shores, not exactly to the surprise of anyone at Engadget who've been expecting this phone on Cingular for quite some time -- but all the same it's pleasant knowing we'll finally wrap our mitts on a Hermes of our own some time in the September / October range. But what we weren't expecting (at least not so soon) was Cingular to launch the HTC StarTrek in August / September, which will quickly shame all you early adopters and RAZR-haters who wanted to get their hands on an import as quickly as possible. Keep an eye out for further details as we snag 'em.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

HP iPaq hw6915 ready to ship on July 4?

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, HP, GSM, GPRS, EDGE

HP's everything-to-everyone hw6xxx series of Pocket PC phones have taken their fair share of criticism for some flaky software, sluggish performance, and bizarre 240 x 240 display resolution, but as we previously reported, the hw69xx looks to be a worthy upgrade. Besides the obvious bonuses like a faster processor and integrated WiFi, the keyboard is allegedly more usable thanks to a revised key shape and, well, it's just good to see that HP finally showed up for the Windows Mobile 5 AKU2 party. Folks that have been waiting for these bad boys to drop might want to reach for their wallets: MobilePlanet is now showing July 4 availability for the hw6915, coming in just shy of $890. Despite the decidedly patriotic release date, the first round of units will likely be European, but the quad-band GSM / EDGE has our American readers covered either way.

[Thanks, Daniel]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

HP iPaq hw6915 PocketPC phone reviewed

Filed under: Handsets, Reviews, Windows Mobile, HP, GSM, GPRS, EDGE
We've been on the fence about HP's hw6000 line of Swiss Army phones ever since we first spotted the GPS-equipped iPaq hw6515 -- these models include everything but the kitchen sink, but they also force you to use that non-standard 240 x 240 screen. Still, MobileTechReview's in-depth look at the latest member of the family, the hw6915, makes us think we could overlook the square screen and lack of 3G data options because, well, the rest of this Windows Mobile 5.0-powered smartphone sounds like exactly what us convergence-geeks are seeking. According to MTR, the quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE handset impresses on many fronts, including its solid keyboard, powerful internal antenna, GPS performance, and best-in-class benchmark numbers. HP also throws in some nice extras, like helpful Today screen plug-ins, a full-featured wireless radio manager, the ability to location-stamp photos, and even A2DP in the Bluetooth stack, which isn't normally included in WM5 AKU2 devices out of the box. Besides the fact that this screen resolution may not support all third-party apps, the only real knock to this model concerns the camera's startup/shutter lags -- and if that's the worst thing to be said about a device that seemingly does it all, then we're totally sold.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Evan Blass

HP to offer HSDPA-equipped laptops

HP is set torelease some business laptops later this year with integrated UMTS/HSDPA technology for globalwireless internet connectivity. HP has weighed in on the issue of whether consumers are ready to watch TV on theircellphones, and has answered with a resounding "no." The company has declared that it has no plans to addany 3G features -- especially video -- to its smartphones until at least next year, with one of the company'sAsia-Pacific execs declaring that a cellphone screen is "too small for 'Desperate Housewives'... [and] youwon't be watching a full football or cricket match." Of course, given that HP doesn't manufacture its ownsmartphones, what the company thinks may have less impact than what features companies like HTC decide to include ontheir smartphones. And, whether HP likes it or not, Windows Mobile smartphones are already video-capable, even ifdownloading via non-3G networks makes getting those vids a chore.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Marc Perton

HP unveils rw6800 series... in Asia

And the specs on the HP iPAQ rw6800 series ain't shabby enoughto get us to look the other way, either: 416MHz Xscale processor, 64MB RAM, 128MB flash memory, 262k color QVGAtouchscreen display, MiniSD, GSM / GPRS / EDGE, Bluetooth 1.2, 802.11b on the rw6828, FM tuner, 2 megapixel camera, andstereo speakers. We've been hearing plenty plenty about theiPAQ rw6828, HP's rebadge of the XDAAtom, including an inadvertent leak to HP's website and a few blurry pics here and there, but now we're finallyseeing some decent pictures of the phone surface. Not that there are lot of surprises, it's basically your average XDAAtom, but they do mix up the face look a little bit. Otherwise it appears to be the same old QVGA display and 2megapixel camera -- which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

More deets, carrier info on the iPaq hw6900 series

Filed under: Handsets, ATT, Windows Mobile, HP
Wegot our mitts on the highly-anticipated iPaq hw69xx's internalHP spec sheet, and while weknew most of the deetsalready, we did spot a section listing the numbering scheme for the various carriers that will offer this phone. TheCingular-branded version will be known as the hw6925 with camera and hw6920 without, and Canada will get the hw6945 forRogers with camera, hw6940 without. A few other tidbits that caught our eye were mentions of A2DP support (wirelessheadphones are even listed as an accessory) and a feature that automatically stamps each photo with the device's GPScoordinates. Overall, we're getting pretty excited for this Swiss Army Phone, and think we can get over minorannoyances like the square screen and lack of SD/SDIO.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Evan Blass

HP creates new division for iPaq

When a company spins a product line into a new division, it usually means one of two things: either the companyhas no idea what to do with the product and wants to shunt it aside, or the product is so big that it deserves someautonomy (think Palm at 3Com). We're not quite sure which scenario is in the offing with HP's announcement that thecompany is creating a new division for the iPaq. On the onehand, the line hasn't exactly seemed like a top priority for HP since it acquired it as part of its purchase of Compaq. However, the fact that HP is supporting the hw6500 series would seem to indicate a renewed interest in the smartphonemarket. So, for now at least, we'll hope for the best from HP's new iPaq division, though if the line eventually getsput out to pasture, we'll know this was the first warning.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Marc Perton

HP iPAQ hw6940 (finally) alive on HP's US site

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, HP, GSM, GPRS, EDGE

And yes,the specs are the same asbefore: Windows Mobile 5.0, 416MHz Intel Xscale CPU, 64k color 3.0-inch transflective touchscreen, GPRS / EDGE,802.11b, Bluetooth 1.2, GPS, 1.3 megapixel camera with LED flash, 64MB RAM, IrDA, MiniSD, and (sigh) USB 1.1. Alright, any time now, HP!

[Thanks, Chris]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

HP iPaq hw6800: 02 XDA Atom with HP firmware?

Filed under: HTC, O2, Windows Mobile, HP
Unlessyou're willing to pay an awful lot for a gray-market model, you're not about to pick up an O2 XDA Atom smartphone inthe US. But that could change if rumors about the HP iPaq hw6800 prove to be correct. According to word on theinternets, HP's upcoming model will be a rebadged version of the Atom (which itself is a rebadged HTC product, likejust about every hot smartphone these days). Rumored specs are identical to the Atom, including Windows Mobile 5, GSM,EDGE, FM radio, 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth and WiFi. Due out in April. We're waiting.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Marc Perton
