Nothing new to report on the Touch Diamond's tech here, but wow, look how fun the box is! Of course, we know you're all waiting to see what they stuffed in the wedge-shaped package, and the answer is a charger, headset, USB cable, a manual or two, and the software. The charger appears to be a universal job with a swappable plug for travel, and the headset a typical example of an HTC pack-in -- albeit with a dash of fun and angular design. Hit the link for the pics.

[Via SlashPhone]

Those of you dying to get your QWERTY on with RIM's hot new Blackberry Bold can start marking your calendars and stashing cash under the cushions -- release dates and pricing info have hit the tubes this morning. As expected, AT&T will get the Bold first in July for $300, while Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile customers will have to wait until September. Oddly, T-Mo subs will have to cough up an extra $50, which seems a little unfair. Of course, these aren't official dates and prices, so things are likely to change, but we'd say everything seems in the ballpark, wouldn't you?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

Orange lands broad iPhone distro deal too

We'll make this brief. Orange spokesperson Therese Wenger told the SDA news agency that it has secured rights to release the iPhone (3G version, presumably) in Switzerland and more than 10 other countries -- take that Swisscom! Other countries include Austria, Belgium, Poland, Portugal, and Romania. And France of course where it's already on sale. This little bundle of plain-vanilla familiarity is seemingly the first live picture of Palm's upcoming Treo 800w for CDMA networks, known internally as the Zeppelin -- you know, the obsolete airships that had a tendency to spontaneously combust. Specs on this one are starting to shore up, with Windows Mobile 6.1, EV-DO Rev. A, GPS, a 320 x 320 touchscreen (still novel by classic WinMo standards) and a typical Treo look and feel that doesn't diverge terribly much from Palm's tried, true, and well-worn formula. Sprint's looking solid to pick it up come late July, but with those HTCs around the corner, just how much love at the register is this thing gonna get?

[Via PHONE Magazine]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

New Sprint Mogul beta moves to Windows Mobile 6.1

Filed under: Handsets, Software, HTC, Sprint, Windows Mobile
Whoa now, hold up there -- yes, we know HTC's got some serious equipment in the works for Sprint this year, but we can't put that Mogul out to pasture just yet. Fortunately, Sprint and HTC both seem relatively committed to keeping the flagship Windows Mobile model up to date, and we now have an official beta firmware floating around that adds Sprint TV and the real prize, Windows Mobile 6.1. Naturally, due caution must be observed when dealing with prerelease wares, but let's be honest, Mogul owners: every single one of you are going to give this a shot, now aren't you?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sony Ericsson's P5 Paris gets specs, strikes another pose

Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

It seems the masses have abandoned the need to take blurry prototype shots, as the pics we're seeing of the Paris are all crystal clear. The device is touted -- by a forum user, so take it with a healthy dose of salt -- as having A-GPS,a 5 megapixel camera, 2.6-inch display, Google Maps, rocker QWERTY keypad, and a very vanilla design aesthetic. The forum user who took the pics, gliatiotis, also chimes in that he was pretty humdrum about the handset, with the major complaint being that the hardware isn't advancing in this line. The drums seem to be beating louder each day on this phone, so we're hoping release to the masses might be just around the corner. Follow the link to get at a pile more pics.

[Via SlashPhone]

For better or worse, the relentless barrage of RAZR 2 variants might only be getting started. Motorola's South Korean outpost has teamed up with SK Telecom to release the RAZR 2 Pink Silver, featuring an "espresso" hued keypad teamed with a light pink case for folks who want to whisper their fashion sense, not scream it -- or, in Motorola's words, for a "confident young generation." Look for it now in SKT retailers if you happen to be in the area.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Samsung gets official with B&O-infused F400 dual slider

Mmm hmm. That F400 dual slider we originally got wind of in February is the real deal, as confirmed by Samsung today. Designed with music aficionados in mind, the handset is equipped with ICEpower from Bang & Olufsen, which gets complemented with a 3-megapixel camera (with AF and a LED flash), 2.2-inch display, 3.5-millimeter headphone jack, twin stereo speakers, music hot key, FM tuner, Bluetooth 2.0, a 1GB microSD card and USB 2.0 connectivity. The unit itself is built on HSDPA tri-band technology, and while we know you US'ers would love to wraps your paws around it, Sammy would rather dish it out to the French in black / white motifs later this month, while sending it to other regions of Europe, Asia and the Middle East shortly thereafter. Tough noogies.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

No surprises: Rogers to pick up BlackBerry Bold

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Rogers Wireless, GSM, HSDPA, UMTS, CDMA

Canada, HSDPA. What's the first carrier that comes to mind? No, not Fido, silly -- Rogers, of course! Makes a lot of sense, then, that Canada's GSM behemoth would be getting dibs on RIM's HSDPA-compatible hotness, the Bold -- not to say we didn't expect it, anyway -- and a new page posted over on Rogers' site encourages interested individuals to sign up to be notified when the device becomes available in their neck of the woods. Unfortunately, there's nary a clue here on exactly when Rogers customers will be able to mosey into the store of their choice and pick one up, but "summer" is a safe (and vague) bet.

[Thanks, Gurkiran]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

LG's KM501 says 'hello' to Taiwan with a 3.5mm headphone jack

Filed under: Handsets, LG, GSM, EDGE

Certain features we really never get tired of reporting, because, well, they're far rarer than they should be. Case in point: the elusive 3.5mm headphone jack, a drop-dead obvious spec that allows real, actual headphones to be plugged in without the aid of a device curiously referred to as a "dongle" in some circles. The LG KM501 for the Taiwanese market is pretty plain by most definitions -- 2 megapixel camera, dedicated music controls, polarizing black / red styling, EDGE data, microSD slot, and A2DP -- but the thing that keeps drawing us back in is that darned jack. Why don't all phones have one of these? Can someone please explain that to us in simple terms? No word on if or when this one might be found outside of Taiwan, which as far as we're concerned, is a travesty for real headphone lovers everywhere.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

South Korea lifts ban on BlackBerrys, sort of

For some, living in a country where BlackBerrys were outright banned would be a fate far, far worse than death -- you know who you are -- but for South Koreans, that nightmarish scenario is a reality. Weird rules and regulations in the country make it difficult for foreign manufacturers to gain the same foothold that domestic powerhouses like Samsung and LG enjoy, and RIM in particular has been a total no-show. Turns out CEO Jim Balsillie is paying a little visit to Seoul for the Organization on Economic Cooperation and Development's Ministerial Meeting on the Future Internet Economy next month though (goodness, what a mouthful), and the Korea Communications Commission felt just a little silly about his visit in light of a nationwide RIM ban, lifting it just enough to allow SK Telecom to start selling the mobile email maestros to companies. Individual sales, not so much -- but you've got to start somewhere, we suppose. If all goes well, devices should go on sale some time in July or August with service running some 26,000 won (about $25) per month.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

3M mini-projectors set to land in / with Samsung phones later this year

Filed under: Handsets, Multimedia, Peripherals, Samsung

Buried underneath the hoopla surrounding the announcement of ASUS' Lamborghini-branded ZX1 at CeBIT, the more mellow P560 was also announced, featuring pretty much every spec the average WinMo buyer could want these days in a package that speaks far, far less about the car you're driving (or wish you were driving, anyway). Which, let's face it, doesn't really put us any closer to pinpointing the exact date, but does make us feel a bit better about the 1000 "iPhone 3G in June or life isn't worth living anymore" t-shirts we just bought on CafePress.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Philips X800 and X-Connect touchscreen phones go legit

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, GSM, HSDPA, UMTS

Not one to string us along endlessly, Philips has 'fessed up to its pair of touchscreen phones, the X800 and the Xenium X-Connect. The X800 does it low-end with a 2.9-inch 240 x 400 screen, 2G GSM for data (no EDGE or WiFi!), a 2 megapixel camera, microSD slot and Bluetooth. Interestingly, the phone offers a documents reader and handwriting recognition, but this hardly seems to be that next do-it-all handheld you've been dreaming of, though the battery life is laudable. The Xenium X-Connect steps things up considerably, however, with Windows Mobile 6, UMTS and HSDPA, and a 3-inch display -- which hopefully sports a few more pixels. Still no WiFi, though, and other details like launch price and date are still slim.

[Via Just AMP]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Christian Dior unveiling phone this Friday?

We've got virtually no background on the rather in-your-face designer handset we see depicted here, but we're told that it's a Christian Dior-branded phone (and remote control of some sort, apparently) embedded with Swarovski crystals. An official announcement is expected this coming Friday, May 16, followed by availability in Dior's boutiques inside of two weeks. Might be a little flashy for the average human's tastes, but we're sure they'll find an audience if this thing is real.

[Thanks, Jose M.]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Official: Swisscom to launch iPhone in Switzerland -- 3G, GPS, mobile TV, video conferencing rumored

So there was a little rumor bouncing about yesterday which claimed that Swisscom would land the iPhone. Today, Swisscom confirmed the deal while saying little else. What's interesting then is what the rest of the rumor, started by the leading Swiss newspaper, Le Matin, had to say. Namely, the 3G iPhone will be on sale in Switzerland this summer (on sale in the US by June) offering 2-way video chats, mobile TV and GPS navigation all powered by an even beefier processor. From the very low to the relatively high end, three new models LG's unleashed on its Indian customers this month run the full range of price points while still managing to pack in music playback across the board. Starting on the bottom, the KP110 is a member of LG's Bullet series (we're not seeing the resemblance to an actual munition, but whatevs) and is being targeted squarely at first-time phone buyers with a microSD slot and FM radio headlining the feature list. Next, the Dynamite KP320's actually a heck of a phone -- 3.2 autofocus megapixels worth, to be exact -- with TV out and A2DP to boot. Rounding out the launches in LG's global KF510 fashion slider with a 3 megapixel cam and a pair of color choices. Look for the three to run Rs. 2,899, 7,990, and 12,250 (about $69, $190, and $291) respectively.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Samsung launches Guru200 candybar in India

At first glance this handset looks boring enough to make even a seasoned professional cry, but hold up just one hot second: it has at least one cool feature that we'd be willing to be a day's wage (not really) that your phone can't do. The Samsung Guru200 -- follow-on to the recently released Guru100 -- features FM radio recording, putting an extra twist on the regular FM radio that's virtually standard on every cellphone sold across India. Otherwise, yeah, it really is as boring as it looks, if you don't count a few software twists designed to cater to the Indian market. Look for it to launch for Rs. 2,999, which works out to about $71.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

LG intros KM380 music phone in China

Thank you, LG, thank you for getting it. A music phone should have a 3.5mm headphone jack -- no exceptions -- and the new KM380 destined for the Chinese market has exactly that, not to mention a clever set of external controls on the outside of the flip dedicated to tune control. Failing to bring something like this onto the low end of your American or European offerings is pretty weak, but maybe this marks the beginning of a new chapter for you -- a "Golden Age" of music phones. Or maybe not. We can hope.

[Via Slashphone]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

i-mate's Ultimate 8502 clears the FCC hurdle

Filed under: Handsets, Others, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS, HSUPA

On paper, the Ultimate 8502 and 9502 from i-mate rock specs that rest at or near the pinnacle of what's available from a Windows Mobile device today: HSUPA, TV out, integrated GPS, QWERTY, and in the case of the 9502, a true VGA touchscreen. While it's historically not been terribly easy to track down i-mate hardware in the States, one thing that might make it just a little bit easier to do so is an honest to goodness FCC approval, and that's what we have here laid out before our very eyes. In this case, it's the 8502 that's been approved under manufacturer Mobinnova's name; we haven't spotted the 9502 yet, so it's probably only the form factor purists and traditionalists that are getting excited about this one. We can almost feel the stupid-fast upload speeds from here!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

BlackBerry touchscreen phone to be dubbed 'Thunder'

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Verizon Wireless, Vodafone, EV-DO

The industrious Boy Genius has apparently unearthed more juicy tidbits about that rumored BlackBerry touchscreen device. Word from BG is that the new iPhone-ish handset is now internally dubbed the "Thunder," and will come to Verizon and Vodafone as an exclusive device. The phone will reportedly have four physical keys (send, end, menu, and back), sport a hybrid CDMA EV-DO Rev. C / GSM HSPA radio, and could come equipped with a 4G LTE component. Outside Waterloo's labs, the device could be known as the BlackBerry 9500 -- though it's possible that designation could change. BGR has included a self-made mockup (above) of what the device may look like, but as of now, no one has laid eyes on this mythical creature.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Motorola's new V750 and W755 for Verizon in all their glory

Filed under: Handsets, Features, Motorola, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA

Two of Motorola's latest Verizon wares continue their relentless march toward launch day (or "L-day" as we like to call it when we're trying to sound extra important and cryptic), the V750 and W755 flips. We don't have a date on the V750 yet -- the slightly sportier-looking of the two in silver with red and mesh black trim -- but we now hear that the W755 is currently tracking for a May 23 debut. No word on pricing there, but with the meager feature set, we imagine it'll be pretty easy on the wallet. In the meantime, though, enjoy some photography. Come on, you know you want to.

Gallery: Motorola's new V750 and W755 for Verizon in all their glory

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Provoke's 2012 concepts head to New York, Nokia hopes nobody notices

If you want to see the future of Nokia handset design then you have to go to the source. Finnish-based Provoke Design is one of Nokia's main design contractors. As such, take a close look at the three concepts it's showing off in New York at the HARDCORE New Finish Design exhibition starting May 17th. According to Provoke, its Express, Share, and Feel concepts (pictured left to right) represent its 2012 vision of mobile handset design. Each will be presented as fully functional prototypes "demonstrating the core innovation" proposed. The look of the Express concept can be changed electronically and customized to your personal tastes. The Feel handset pair are meant for couples and feature a specialized UI and touch simulation to enable, uh hem, "deep communication." The Share concept allows cults and anarchists to communicate in personalized code formed in subgroups of like-minded weirdos... or something like that. Read for yourself in the press release posted after the break.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

HTC Touch Diamond vs. iPhone, fight!

Our brethren over at Engadget Chinese had the chance to size-up HTC's new Windows Mobile 6.1 Touch Diamond with Apple's iPhone this morning in Taiwan. A couple things you should know about this purported Philips Xenium X-Connect before churning your gadget juices through the emotional Osterizer. First, it's clearly a product rendering. Second, Philips Xenium cellphones are primarily found in Asia Pacific region -- as such, a European or North American launch is likely out of the question. If the X-Connect is the real-deal, however, here's what we'll be missing: Windows Mobile 6, 3G UMTS/HSDPA radios, GPS receiver, AA/AAA battery backup, microSD slot, and Bluetooth 2.0 all powered by a 624MHz Intel processor beneath a 3.0-inch (presumably touchscreen) display. Still, as a broadly positioned "communication device," maybe we'll see Philips reach out to different geographies this time around.

Update: Oh snap, this thing sure looks like the Xenium 800.

[Via ToTouch, Thanks Giovanni]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

AT&T says "iPhone Black" means nothing, gunman acted alone

We've just received an official statement from AT&T regarding the presence of an "iPhone Black" on its model selector earlier today: "The reference to 'iPhone Black' was simply a temporary placeholder used over the weekend for a scheduled catalog update. It was meant to temporarily distinguish the various iPhone models-4GB, 8GB and 16GB-but was never reassigned. We're changing the site now." Makes total sense, right? Three models of iPhone, two placeholders: iPhone and iPhone Black. You know, because "Black" has so much to do with memory capacity, and is easier to remember than 4, 8, or 16GB -- never mind the fact that we have good intel suggesting that the next-gen device is glossy black.

Also, AT&T, we know those cigarettes are yours, so you can stop telling us you were "just carrying them for a friend." We're not stupid, you know.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

AT&T to be first US carrier with BlackBerry Bold

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, ATT, GSM, HSDPA, UMTS

Granted, we haven't heard anything thus far about which carrier would be offering up the recently-made-official BlackBerry Bold, but we can't say we're too shocked to hear that it will indeed be AT&T. In a report highlighting the recent boost in RIM's stock price, it's noted that AT&T will be "the exclusive carrier for the Bold in the US," though we have all ideas the other major US carriers will be following suit shortly, probably with redubbed handsets. We know, you're hungry for a price to mull over, but sadly, it's not meal time just yet.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Hands-on with the LG Vu, Samsung Access, and AT&T Mobile TV

Filed under: Handsets, Features, Multimedia, LG, Samsung, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

These days, voice is the tip of the iceberg. Carriers are always -- and we do mean always -- looking for crafty ways to boost their average revenue per user, and with everyone and their brother offering an unlimited voice plan at this point, it's about data and value-add services more than it ever has been before. To that end, Verizon and AT&T have embraced MediaFLO as a way to keep their subscribers entertained on the road to the tune of a few extra bucks per month. AT&T's service, simply christened Mobile TV, has just launched with a pair of devices from Samsung and LG; naturally, we wanted to know whether the phones were worth the $199 and $299 AT&T's asking, respectively -- but perhaps more importantly, we had to figure out whether the service was worth sucking another $15 a month out of our already-strained wallets.

Gallery: Hands-on with the LG Vu, Samsung Access, and AT&T Mobile TV

Continue reading Hands-on with the LG Vu, Samsung Access, and AT&T Mobile TV

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

AT&T listing "iPhone Black" model, O2 gets the original back in stock

Filed under: Handsets, ATT, O2, Apple

Good news and bad news on the imminent 3G iPhone front. O2 apparently got another batch of 16 giggers in stock, since it's currently accepting orders, while the 8GB remains out of stock, and both phones remain unavailable on the US and UK Apple Stores. More encouraging, however, is the new listing of an "iPhone Black" model on AT&T's account management site. There's nothing else on the site to hint at specs or release or whether this is indeed the upcoming 3G iPhone, but it does fall in line with the word we have on a glossy black back for the much anticipated phone. Whether all this means we have weeks or months to wait is anyone's guess, but there are plenty of encouraging signs out there for the true believers to cling onto.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

New LG slider in Verizon ad? The darndest things can happen when you don't have your marketing and product development groups on exactly the same page. Case in point: this ad, astutely observed by a reader and sent in. It clearly depicts a phone that doesn't exist -- at least not officially. The closest analog we can draw to it would be Alltel's LG Glimmer, though it doesn't share the Glimmer's chin below the keypad. Our guess, honestly, is that some Photoshop wiz slapped an oversized VZ Navigator screen shot on a Venus, added a stupendously huge Verizon logo below it just for effect, and called it a day. Anyone else want to chime in on this?

[Thanks, Zachary D.]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

SingTel ropes iPhone distro in Singapore, India, Australia, and Philippines

Singapore Telecommunications (aka SingTel) announced that it's secured agreements to distribute the iPhone in Singapore (on SingTel Mobile) and its partly-owned subsidiaries in Australia (on Optus), India (on Bharti Group), and the Philippines (on Globe Telecom).
Granted this only gives us a glimpse -- by glimpse we mean only a few seconds -- of what could be a new version of Windows Mobile 7 running HTC Touch Slide handset. The media sharing magic of Live Mesh is what's at the center of this vid, from Mac, to Windows, to mobile, your pics and content will wander -- but the quick glimpse of the sliding pane on the home screen did make us grin a little bit. You can find the video after the break and if you don't want to sit through the whole affair, just zip to about the 30 second mark and you'll be home.

Look! It's pretty and free! Though of course you're going to need a BlackBerry handset -- or a couple -- to make it all run smoothly, but we're sure Bell will help with that bit. The BlackBerry Unite! collaboration package is designed for families and small businesses to give them features like calendar sharing, mail access -- up to 10 accounts per person -- shared contacts, and access to shared files on the PC where the software is installed. Of course, there's a rub, the suite will only support 5 users, but that should hopefully float most peoples and some small home outfits boats. Now if only RIM would throw down some handsets to get the youngsters clamoring, then we'd really be talking.

Oh, there are plenty of bad Chinese iPhone knockoffs out there, but the HiPhone may be the reigning champion these days -- so it kind of seemed like a matter of time before Apple loosed the hounds on distributors of the device. We don't have confirmation or proper human translation of the above legal notice, but it would appear Apple's European counsel Bird & Bird has delivered at least one notice to an unnamed distributor threatening €25,000 in damages (and €15,000 in legal fees) for HiPhone sales. Hardly the case of the century, but we'll let you know if we hear anything.

[Thanks, Ricardo]

Update: Reader Ben W hooked us up with a translation of the letter; we can't vouch for its veracity, but it's posted after the break if you want to check it out. In case you hadn't heard, there's a battle raging for the hearts and minds of Europeans looking for a fashionable slider with a powerhouse camera. Both Samsung and LG are stepping up to the plate to address that very specific need this summer, with Samsung delivering the u900 Soul -- a phone it claims will be the last in its Ultra line -- and LG bringing the similarly named (and similarly spec'd) KF750 Secret. Initial reviews for both devices seem overwhelmingly positive, so don't expect them to necessarily help you choose which one to buy; instead, we suspect it might come down to brand preference, the Soul's nifty OLED d-pad, and the Secret's touchscreen. Both have HSDPA 2100 while rejecting North America's 3G airwaves, so for some of us, this battle is a bit of a moot point -- but for the rest of you, best of luck picking your '08 weapon of choice.

[Thanks, TI]

Read - MobileBurn reviews the Samsung Soul
Read - CNET UK reviews the LG Secret

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Newsflash! You'll never believe this, but it looks like Cupertino might be getting ready to drop a bomb this summer -- a 3G bomb, in fact! The latest beta release of firmware 2.0 for the iPhone has apparently revealed a preference screen that allows users of the new model to disable the 3G radio and fall back to GPRS / EDGE because the faster service "decreases battery life." Gotta pay to play, as they say. The ability to disable 3G service in favor of improved standby performance is a pretty common one in modern phones, so we're not surprised to see it here -- just a little disappointed that Apple hasn't incorporated enough fairy dust to magically make the problem go away.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

British Telecom launches BT ToGO service

This is a fun twist, instead of a mobile provider adding home phone service to its roster, British Telecom, a UK wireline provider is adding wireless service called Broadband Anywhere with a couple handsets called BT ToGO. The two handsets on offer are HTC's S710 and the S620 offering WiFi access when available and wireless when not, the home service is included with a BT WiFi set and router called the. The handsets are being bundled with "Broadband Anywhere" and includes DSL at home, Openzone WiFi and BT FON access with a sticker price of anywhere from £23.99 to £53.99 (roughly $47 and $105) a month. We're thinking $47 isn't too terrible a price to pay as long as they've got you properly covered, but $105 might be hard to swallow if the plans are meager. More specifics on the plans as soon as we have it.
