Those of you dying to get your QWERTY on with RIM's hot new Blackberry Bold can start marking your calendars and stashing cash under the cushions -- release dates and pricing info have hit the tubes this morning. As expected, AT&T will get the Bold first in July for $300, while Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile customers will have to wait until September. Oddly, T-Mo subs will have to cough up an extra $50, which seems a little unfair. Of course, these aren't official dates and prices, so things are likely to change, but we'd say everything seems in the ballpark, wouldn't you?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

AT&T's 3G comes out on top in speed tests, will only get faster in 2009

Filed under: ATT, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, GSM, EV-DO, HSDPA, Studies, CDMA, Misc, HSUPA, LTE

The folks over at Computerworld just ran the current 3G providers in America through their paces, only to discover that AT&T came out on top in almost every category. Well, it appears the monolithic telco plans to keep its edge (er...) on the competition -- by upping its HSPA service to a whopping 20Mbps come 2009. Our main man Ralph de la Vega said that the process wouldn't require a major overhaul to the provider's infrastructure, and that they're already working on punching up the current 3.6Mbps speeds to 7.2Mbps "in the labs." Apparently, this won't stall plans for forthcoming 4G / 700MHz / LTE service from the company -- it'll just be icing on the cake.

Read - Which 3G network is the best?
Read - AT&T plans 20-megabit 3G by 2009

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

RIM prepping BlackBerry Media Sync for iTunes transfers

Filed under: Software, RIM, ATT, GSM, EDGE, Apple

Everyone knows that nobody buys a BlackBerry for its musical prowess, right? Au contraire, dearest email addict. RIM is currently working up a new application for BlackBerry smartphones that will "transfer your desktop iTunes music files" to your BB for those rare moments when you can actually kick back and enjoy the soothing sounds of Rogue Wave. Interestingly, we're not told whether BlackBerry Media Sync is being crafted specifically for the upcoming Bold, and we're also left to wonder when it'll actually be released. Patience is a virtue -- at least that's the word heard through the grapevine.

[Via CNET]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

AT&T's activator getting jacked by iPhones that are never activated

The effect of unlocked iPhones on the wireless industry is perhaps wider than anyone could've guessed, with Synchronoss -- the company that handles AT&T's activations -- reporting that its growth expectations for 2008 have been visibly impacted by the gap between iPhones sold and iPhones activated. The problem stems from the fact that Synchronoss is paid only for iPhones that actually end up tied into AT&T, and since the unlocking phenomenon is pretty widespread within the iPhone community, the company's feeling the heat. Making matters worse, they've lost the premium they get for activating iPhones versus other AT&T devices in the first quarter, so all told, it's a gloom-and-doom report. Maybe they can make some of that cash back by... oh, selling unlocked iPhones. We've just received an official statement from AT&T regarding the presence of an "iPhone Black" on its model selector earlier today: "The reference to 'iPhone Black' was simply a temporary placeholder used over the weekend for a scheduled catalog update. It was meant to temporarily distinguish the various iPhone models-4GB, 8GB and 16GB-but was never reassigned. We're changing the site now." Makes total sense, right? Three models of iPhone, two placeholders: iPhone and iPhone Black. You know, because "Black" has so much to do with memory capacity, and is easier to remember than 4, 8, or 16GB -- never mind the fact that we have good intel suggesting that the next-gen device is glossy black.

Also, AT&T, we know those cigarettes are yours, so you can stop telling us you were "just carrying them for a friend." We're not stupid, you know.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

AT&T to be first US carrier with BlackBerry Bold

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, ATT, GSM, HSDPA, UMTS

Granted, we haven't heard anything thus far about which carrier would be offering up the recently-made-official BlackBerry Bold, but we can't say we're too shocked to hear that it will indeed be AT&T. In a report highlighting the recent boost in RIM's stock price, it's noted that AT&T will be "the exclusive carrier for the Bold in the US," though we have all ideas the other major US carriers will be following suit shortly, probably with redubbed handsets. We know, you're hungry for a price to mull over, but sadly, it's not meal time just yet.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Hands-on with the LG Vu, Samsung Access, and AT&T Mobile TV

Filed under: Handsets, Features, Multimedia, LG, Samsung, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

These days, voice is the tip of the iceberg. Carriers are always -- and we do mean always -- looking for crafty ways to boost their average revenue per user, and with everyone and their brother offering an unlimited voice plan at this point, it's about data and value-add services more than it ever has been before. To that end, Verizon and AT&T have embraced MediaFLO as a way to keep their subscribers entertained on the road to the tune of a few extra bucks per month. AT&T's service, simply christened Mobile TV, has just launched with a pair of devices from Samsung and LG; naturally, we wanted to know whether the phones were worth the $199 and $299 AT&T's asking, respectively -- but perhaps more importantly, we had to figure out whether the service was worth sucking another $15 a month out of our already-strained wallets.

Gallery: Hands-on with the LG Vu, Samsung Access, and AT&T Mobile TV

Continue reading Hands-on with the LG Vu, Samsung Access, and AT&T Mobile TV

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

AT&T listing "iPhone Black" model, O2 gets the original back in stock

Filed under: Handsets, ATT, O2, Apple

Good news and bad news on the imminent 3G iPhone front. O2 apparently got another batch of 16 giggers in stock, since it's currently accepting orders, while the 8GB remains out of stock, and both phones remain unavailable on the US and UK Apple Stores. More encouraging, however, is the new listing of an "iPhone Black" model on AT&T's account management site. There's nothing else on the site to hint at specs or release or whether this is indeed the upcoming 3G iPhone, but it does fall in line with the word we have on a glossy black back for the much anticipated phone. Whether all this means we have weeks or months to wait is anyone's guess, but there are plenty of encouraging signs out there for the true believers to cling onto.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

AT&T's bringing free wifi to the iPhone -- once it finishes wigging out

Hey, do you guys want to hear our AT&T impression? It's pretty awesome. Okay, okay, here it goes: "Great news, we're offering free WiFi to iPhone users! Wait, no we're not. Yes we are! Oh, no, wait, cancel that." Pretty spot-on, right? Sadly, it looks like we might need something else to rag on shortly, since an AT&T spokesman started clearing the air with the New York Times late last week. The bottom line -- for the moment, anyway -- is that AT&T has "long planned" to offer up its WiFi hotspots as a free value-add for the iPhone and all of the other WiFi-equipped devices in its arsenal, but that the brief enabling of the feature thus far and the mention on AT&T's site were results of human error, and the company isn't prepared at this point to commit to an actual launch date or details on how the service will work. Hey, at least we know we're not just suffering from some brutal hallucinations now.

[Via TUAW]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Sliders, colors the themes with AT&T's new arrivals

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Sony Ericsson, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Multiple Eseries colors certainly aren't without precedent, so we can buy that much -- and AT&T has previously launched the E62, so we can totally picture this going down. What's more, we've now heard from an independent source that the AT&T-branded E71 does in fact exist and is currently being crafted in Nokia's San Diego facilities (production models won't be born in the same place, we presume). Just a warning, guys: if this ends up happening as an EDGE-only device, we're going to lose it.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

AT&T WiFi access now listed as "included" with iPhone

Filed under: ATT, GSM, EDGE, Misc, Apple, OS X

A friendly neighborhood AT&T employee forwarded us a purported memo for AT&T retail store employees that could provide a rather telling clue about the next-gen iPhone's release date this summer if it proves true. A similar memo went out last year around this time requesting that employees not take any vacations between June 15 and July 15, and this year those dates are June 15 and July 12 -- which seems suspiciously early, but that's what the man says. The memo cites "an exciting Summer Promotional Launch," which we're guessing doesn't refer to some new Motorola flip phone. Also telling is the fact that employees might be able to take some vacations later within that window when things die down a bit, which seems to imply that Apple could be aiming for a launch date right around the iPhone's one year anniversary of June 29th. How romantic.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Mythical SMT5700 finally near launch on AT&T?

Filed under: Handsets, Others, ATT, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE

We like to rag on the SMT5700 every so often -- not because it's low-end, not because it lacks 3G, not because it's not the prettiest smartphone we've ever seen. No, we give the SMT5700 a well-earned dose of crap because it earned FCC approval over a year ago. That's pretty insane even by US carrier standards, and new intel over at Boy Genius Reports indicates that AT&T may finally be ramping up to sell this thing. As we mentioned, it'll be pretty low-end on account of its EDGE data and 2 megapixel cam, but hey -- in the year 2008, there's no good reason folks shouldn't be able to get a capable smartphone for next to nothing on any major carrier, in our humblest of opinions. The site doesn't seem to know when exactly it'll launch, but they've posted a few puzzle piece-like press shots of the phone to whet our appetite (or get us to gag, depending on your disposition toward these kinds of phones).

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Engadget Mobile, LG, and Stark Industries want you to have a $1,500 Iron Man phone

Filed under: Handsets, LG, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS, Announcements

If ever there were an LG Shine to live up to its lofty name, this would definitely be it. We'd like to introduce you to the Iron Man phone -- presented here by our boy Robert Downey, Jr. -- based on the Shine slider as sold by AT&T. Unlike the garden-variety Shine, the Iron Man edition trades up to a deep red case with gold plated highlights and a solid 18K gold battery cover to commemorate the launch of the film in style. That's plenty enough element 79 to give this thing some serious heft. We're not bragging, though -- we want you to have it.

The phone is valued at a princely $1,500; twenty are being given away by LG directly -- we've got the twenty first. How do you pry it out of our hands? Easy: we want to see just how nasty, disgusting, and close to complete breakdown your current face candy is. Send us a pic and tell us a little bit about your poor, dilapidated phone and the long journey it's taken to its current state of disrepair. We'll pick the saddest entry and let you retire that terrible thing for something just a little flashier.

One word of advice though: don't bother breaking your phone or taking a photo of your dad's Dynatac or something, that's not what we're looking for.

Check out the gallery to see shots of the very Iron Man phone that could be yours, and don't forget to enter. Good luck!

The rules (yeah, there are always rules)
The Duo 2 -- model number C820, naturally -- is said to feature a rounded black case that recalls the look of Motorola's old MPx200 and clocks in with dimensions very close to those of the HTC Vox. We're also told that the dual slide feel is "excellent" with well-illuminated buttons on both the numeric and QWERTY pads; the QWERTY side is apparently the easier to use of the two, with the numeric side being just a bit difficult to navigate by feel alone. Up front, the 2.4-inch screen is QVGA (who'd have thought?). Along the four edges you'll find a Pantech proprietary charge / sync connector and a microSD slot protected by a hard plastic cover.

It doesn't sound a heck of a lot different than the phone it replaces so far, but here's where it gets a little interesting: the C820 moves up from a 1.3 to a 2 megapixel camera and packs Windows Mobile 6.1, which apparently is already pretty well customized for the carrier thanks to the inclusion of apps like MobiTV and AT&T Music. Follow the break for software, memory, and processor details; since we might be waiting a while for a release, you may as well get all the info you can in the meanwhile, eh?
Continue reading Pantech Duo 2 C820 in the works for AT&T

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

LG Vu officially available from AT&T

Filed under: Handsets, LG, ATT, GSM, EDGE

No surprises here -- particularly since LG's Vu has been on sale through a number of AT&T retail outlets since late last month (whoops!). Although AT&T has had a specialized plan for the deaf and hard of hearing for some time now, the iPhone has been unfortunately unable to take advantage. No longer will that be the case, as said carrier has just implemented the Text Accessibility Plan for iPhone, which provides unlimited texting, unlimited data usage, $0.40 per minute pay-per-use voice and Visual Voicemail. Granted, the iPhone TAP does cost $40 ($10 more than the vanilla TAP), but you are getting limitless texts (versus 5,000) and Visual Voicemail thrown in -- not that those inclusions really warrant the extra Hamilton. Nevertheless, those with adequate documentation can get their iPhone on the plan right now, just click the read link for details / instructions.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Next-gen iPhone spotted in the wild?

Filed under: Handsets, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, Apple, OS X

Well here's an interesting one. French iPhone blog iPhon.fr got these pics from an anonymous and unverified source, and while there's no way of telling if the shots are legit, they certainly have a truthy ring to them. They follow what we know so far about the shape, size and color of the upcoming 3G iPhone, and while there's always the possibility of knockoff, a Photoshop job, or some other evil plot to mislead us, we're certainly not going to discount these shots entirely in the runup to iPhone's second coming.

[Thanks, Janvier]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Pantech C610 shows up in FCC -- bound for AT&T, we'd wager

History tells us that Pantech likes to slap a "C" prefix on its models destined for AT&T (harking back to the Cingular days, no doubt), and so naturally our eyes widened just a bit when we saw just such a device fly through the FCC this week. This particular device is dubbed the C610, which we guesstimate puts it at about 200 less than the C810; enough of a deduction to take it out of the smartphone realm? Hard to say. We can tell from the documentation here that it's a 3G device, and a couple shots of the phone in the SAR reports taken from far, far away (blown up here for your viewing enjoyment) show a clamshell that's probably targeting a fashion-conscious crowd since it's done up in red. We wish we could say "we'll know soon enough," but since we're still waiting for the SMT5700 that hit the FCC over a year ago, we'll keep our mouths shut.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Hands-on with the LG Vu in retail clothing

Filed under: Features, LG, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

So our friendly local postman dropped this little gem off at our door this morning! That's right, your eyes don't deceive you -- it's an LG Vu of the CU920 variety, complete with Mobile TV support. We haven't had a chance to get the TV service up and running just yet, but we wanted to throw up a few visuals for everyone to feast on. In short, the screen's beautiful, we're pretty happy with the touch control so far, and we're pretty shocked at just how light this phone is. Click on, people! Do it!

Gallery: Hands-on with the LG Vu in retail clothing

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Garmin Nuvifone hitting AT&T for $500 plus?

We know it's coming in Q3 but the price of Garmin's hotly anticipated Nuvifone has always been a mystery. Until now. We just received a screenshot that a helpful reader snagged from a Garmin survey. In it, our tipster was asked the following question:

"Now, how likely would you be to buy the Garmin nüvifone (for yourself or as a gift) if offered by AT&T for $499.99 with a two year contract? You would be required to have both a data plan that would include unlimited Internet browsing and unlimited Navigation for $19.99 per month and one of the standard voice rate plans for a monthly fee."

So dear readers, we ask you... does that sound reasonable for a 3.5-inch touchscreen cellphone with GPS navigation, 3.5G data, WiFi, audio and video playback, and 3 megapixel camera?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

Video: AT&T launching Mobile TV May 4th, demonstrated on LG Vu

Filed under: Handsets, Multimedia, LG, Samsung, ATT

MediaFLO is about to cut loose for AT&T customers this morning and we've got video to prove it. After the break you'll find Mobile TV running on LG's new $300 (2-year, after $100 rebate) Vu, one of just two Mobile TV compatible handsets launching on AT&T May 4th -- the other being the $200 (2-year, after $100 rebate) Samsung Access. Performance looks reasonably snappy when scrolling through the channel guide although some of the exclusive PIX and CNN Mobile Live content is not yet available. S'ok, AT&T has three more days to throw the big blue switch on the broadcast TV service which includes a $15/month unlimited Mobile TV access plan. Hear that Verizon? AT&T's about to step all over your portable TV game in the US market.

[Via MyFoxUtah]
Continue reading Video: AT&T launching Mobile TV May 4th, demonstrated on LG Vu

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

LG Vus popping up in AT&T stores ahead of launch

Filed under: Handsets, LG, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Stores have started stocking up on Vus ahead of their launch next week, and we're getting a little photography here to prove it. It looks like this one is an honest-to-goodness CU920, too, meaning it sports MediaFLO reception -- either that, or AT&T was too lazy to put the Mobile TV-less CU915 model in a different package without the "TV" icon on the screen. We're still hearing May 5 is the official launch day for these, but it seems some locations are selling early, so try your luck and let us know how it goes, k?

[Thanks, Kal]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

3G iPhone to be discounted to $199 by AT&T?

According to Fortune, AT&T will subsidize the cost of the new, 3G iPhone by as much as $200, bringing the price within the $199 range. Apparently, a "person familiar with the strategy" claims that the provider will create this bargain bonanza for customers signing new, two-year contracts. Of course, the author of the story also says that the new phones will be available in "8-gigabit-memory and... 16-gigabit-memory" versions (for $399 and $499, respectively), so take that as you like. In addition to these discounts, the source says the new iPhone will be 2.5mm thinner than the previous iteration, although we understand that right after telling Fortune this information, the "person" burst into a cloud of rainbow-colored sparkles and went flying off into the night sky.

[Thanks, Penny]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Blackberry 9000 release rumors swirl

Let's preface this by saying that we honestly have no idea what's going on with the hot BlackBerry 9000, but Fortune is reporting that it's delayed due to either a) AT&T concerns over call quality; b) AT&T concerns over launching a 3G Blackberry and the 3G iPhone at the same time or; c) or something else entirely. That's news to our homeboy Boy Genius, who thinks Fortune needs to start double-checking its model numbers and code names before it starts rumor-mongering, and points out that he's been on top of power-management-related 9000 delays for a while now. Testy! We're a little more inclined to trust BGR on this stuff -- the man's got a point when he says he's gotten pre-release versions of every RIM device since the Pearl 8100, and if the 9000's faster processor and 3G are indeed causing power problems, he's likely to notice. Let's just hope this all gets sorted soon -- we're ready to move on up.

Read - Fortune: "Delay seen for RIM's new Blackberry"
Read - BGR: "Cleaning up those BlackBerry rumors"

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

$100 femtocells to be sold by AT&T?

Yep, we're mandating that this one be filed in the rumor folder for now, but according to a report from ThinkPanmure, AT&T Mobility is planning to move up to 7 million femtocells acquired from UK-based ip.access. As the story goes, AT&T inked a contract with the aforesaid firm for up to half a billion dollars in femtocells over five years, and it's supposedly aiming to sell each to end users for "as little as $100." As expected, spokespeople for AT&T and ip.access weren't around / didn't care to comment on the matter, but a dame from the former did admit that it was "examining the potential benefits of femtocells through lab tests and planned to conduct a trial later this year." Of course, AT&T wouldn't be the first US carrier to offer the boxes, but it's not like Sprint's $49.99 Airave set any sales records or anything when it launched late last year.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

AT&T posts killer first quarter, data growth "robust"

Economic downturn and Sprint woes be damned, because AT&T's not hearin' a bit of it. The company's wireless unit -- which also happens to be the largest carrier in the country -- announced that it put up some serious numbers in the first quarter of 2008, growing revenue 18.3 percent year over year for a grand total of $11.8 billion. It tacked on 1.3 million new subscribers in the quarter, an 8.7 percent improvement in net gain over the same period in 2007, and grew ARPU by 2 percent in that time. Perhaps most eye-widening, though, is the fact that wireless data revenue grew a boggling 57.3 percent over the last year, thanks in part to the 620 million and 44 billion multimedia and text messages sent in the three-month span, respectively. Needless to say, the wireless division's looking just a little more... shall we say, "dynamic" than the wireline group at the moment, as recent job moves would indicate.

[Via mocoNews]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

WiFi-less BlackBerry 8110 showing up in AT&T stores

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, ATT, GSM, EDGE

If you're just too cool for the WiFi found in AT&T's BlackBerry Pearl 8120, we might suggest this little number. That's right, the slightly less 802.11-inclined 8110 is now finding its way into corporate stores, offering the same physical package as its counterpart plus the added bonus of GPS navigation. It's available for $149.99 after contract and rebate -- that's $50 less than the 8120, mind you -- and comes in your choice of red or the understated "titanium."

[Thanks, BrainsOnTheMonitor]

Read - BlackBerry Pearl 8110 (Red)
Read - BlackBerry Pearl 8110 (Titanium)

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

AT&T Mobile TV: May 4th in three packages?

Okay, first the bad news: we're hearing that AT&T's most expensive Mobile TV package is going to run a stiff $30 a month. Now, the good: you're paying for a heck of a lot more than just tee-vee there. Our tipster tells us that AT&T is expecting to launch a grand total of three packages of its MediaFLO-based service come the 4th of next month; first up is Limited, which will run $13 a month and offer Fox, CBS, NBC, and NBC News. This one is so limited, in fact, AT&T's limiting it right off their website -- it seems you'll have to call customer service to get hold of this particular setup. Next is Basic at $15 a month (seriously, who's going to not pay the $2 more over Basic?), which includes the full range of channels: the aforementioned four plus Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, CNN Mobile, Sony Pictures, and ESPN. Finally, the Plus package should feature the same lineup as Basic but bundles unlimited MEdia Net and Cellular Video for $30 a month, and we suspect this is the plan most Mobile TV subscribers are going to snatch up. We still think this could end up being a tough pill to swallow for a lot of power users who've graduated to SlingPlayer Mobile, but with simpler devices like the Samsung Access (pictured) in the mix for Mobile TV, who knows -- they might find a target demographic yet.

[Thanks, Rayne]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

House bill proposes ban on in-flight cellphone use

Filed under: Culture, Handsets, Messaging, Alltel, Amp'd, Boost Mobile, ATT, Helio, Sprint, T-Mobile, Qwest, Verizon Wireless, Virgin Mobile, US Cellular
This could -- at least temporarily -- put an end the nightmarish scenario involving you, lack of sleep, and some freakish chatty Cathy plopped next to you by the airline. While we're all twiddling our thumbs and waiting patiently for next month's Vu release on AT&T, we suppose some reading materials couldn't hurt, right? We've found no earth-shattering surprises in these quick guides that are filtering their way into corporate stores, but we do think it's kinda funny that they're pushing Cellular Video right alongside Mobile TV on page one; then again, with a MediaFLO launch that covers just a fraction of AT&T's total coverage area, we suppose we'll still need some entertainment when we're out in the sticks. Video Share instructions are here, along with the comforting reminder that a light finger press is sufficient to operate the Vu's touch screen -- so yeah, we're pretty much educated and ready, AT&T. Although that isn't necessarily an outlandish thing to believe (Verizon's exclusivity period probably lasts 12 months at most, after all), it implies that at least two additional versions of the Voyager would have to be in the works: a CDMA piece without MediaFLO for Sprint and, of course, a GSM variant for AT&T. The news comes on the heels of LG's triumphant claim that they've shipped a whopping 1.1 million Voyagers since launch -- a pretty impressive number considering that the phone just launched at the very tail end of 2007 -- and a number that could pretty easily triple if these other carrier deals turn out to be legit.

[Thanks, Jeremy]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

National SMS alert system closer to reality

Filed under: Messaging, ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless
The FCC is expected to get real with a nationwide SMS-based alert system on Wednesday, revealing the details of a program that will likely be adopted by all four national carriers in the US -- and very likely, we'd assume, most of the regionals as well. The program will be designed to send messages to in-the-know subscribers in the event of a natural disaster, attack, or child abduction, and naturally, folks will be able to opt out if they prefer the "ignorance is bliss" approach. The system is also apparently going to feature specific provisions requiring participating carriers to make sure disabled users can get the alert via special vibration or audible alerts, though it's not clear how those will differ from the vibrates and beeps the rest of the populace receives. If all goes well, carriers who opt to implement the system will have to have it running within 10 months, so we'll finally be able to get that "OMG TRNDO" text we've always wanted to receive.

[Via Phone Scoop]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

AT&T survey suggests DVR control, e-wallet functionality for iPhone

Remember that AT&T iPhone survey that was floating around last year? The carrier's back at it again with another round of rather fanciful sounding upgrades and changes to the iPhone and the way it's sold and serviced. First up, AT&T wanted to know whether we'd upgrade to the 3G iPhone -- a device that "Apple and AT&T have announced," so it says. Next, we were presented with a series of "potential enhancements" (pictured) and asked how we felt about each one. In particular, DVR control and the ability to use the iPhone "as a credit card" caught our eye; we're not sure if they're suggesting NFC integration or something far less techy here, but if there's one way to light NFC on fire stateside, it might just be support from the Apple mothership. Since the iChat app suggested in the last survey never materialized, of course, this could be nothing more than wishful thinking on AT&T's part -- not to say we can blame 'em.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

David Dorman appointed as Motorola non-executive Chairman

We won't say that Motorola's on the up and up, but just after ridding itself of that pending litigation between it and Carl Icahn comes word that a fresh face will be succeeding Ed Zander as non-executive Chairman of the Board. David Dorman, former chairman and CEO of AT&T, has been selected by Moto's Board of Directors to take over Zander's chairman seat after he retires on May 5th. According to Greg Brown, president and CEO of the company, he feels that Dorman is "ideally suited to serve as Motorola's chairman," and he made known his excitement about working with Dave as it "moves forward with its plan to create two independent publicly traded companies and improve the performance of the Mobile Devices business." The folks at ZiPhone spotted some code in the brand new 2.0 beta iPhone firmware that could point to the chip to be used in the upcoming 3G iPhone. The code makes mention of "SGOLD3," which could very well refer to Infineon's followup chip to the S-GOLD2 which powers the current iPhone. Infineon's less fancy name for the S-GOLD3H chip is the PMB8878, a 7.2Mbps HSDPA chip with all the video acceleration and media playback features iPhone users have come to expect. Advantages over its predecessor include higher resolution camera support (5 megapixels instead of 2), a 2x speed MMC / SD interface and DVB-H module support, but that doesn't necessarily mean any of those specs will end up in the ensuing iPhone 3G -- S-GOLD2 has plenty of features the current iPhone doesn't take advantage of. The processor speed, however, remains the same.

[Via ZiPhone; thanks Adam B.]

[Warning: PDF link]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Walt Mossberg promises 3G iPhone in 60 days

While talking up web as a video delivery medium at a Beet.TV executive summit, Walt Mossberg casually yet confidently mentioned that the iPhone will be going 3G in 60 days. Of course, it doesn't take an illustrious position as tech pundit to the masses to figure out a 3G iPhone is just around the corner: price cuts, stock shortages and word from Ralph de la Vega himself have rapidly narrowed down the launch window, but a semi-guarantee from Uncle Walt is certainly icing on the cake. The video snippet is after the break, or hit up the read link for the whole thing.

[Via 9 to 5 Mac; thanks, TedB]
Continue reading Walt Mossberg promises 3G iPhone in 60 days

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

AT&T says B Block and Aloha spectrum will go to LTE

<im
